What Rising Interest Rates Mean for Stocks, Bonds, and Savings Accounts

Rising interest rates do not produce one universal result. Newly issued bonds and some deposit accounts can offer higher yields, while existing fixed-rate bonds generally lose market value. Stocks may face lower valuations, higher company financing costs, and weaker demand, but earnings, inflation, and investor expectations can outweigh the rate effect. The practical answer depends on which rate moved, how quickly it passed through, and whether you are saving, investing, borrowing, or selling.

Start with the rate that is actually moving

In the United States, the Federal Reserve’s federal funds target is a short-term policy rate. It is not the same as the APY on a savings account, the coupon on a bond, or the yield on a 10-year Treasury security. The policy rate influences financial conditions, but each market and institution adjusts on its own timetable.

Expectations matter as much as the latest announcement. If investors already expected a rate increase, prices may have adjusted before the Federal Open Market Committee acts. Conversely, an unexpected change or a signal about future policy can move longer-term yields, stocks, and currencies immediately. Federal Reserve Governor Adriana D. Kugler described the transmission this way in an April 22, 2025 speech: “Adjustments to the federal funds rate affect a multitude of financial conditions faced by consumers and businesses.”

Rate or return What it represents Why it may not move one-for-one with the policy rate
Federal funds target range The Federal Reserve’s overnight policy target for eligible institutions It is a short-term anchor; market expectations and other conditions affect longer-term rates.
Treasury yield The return investors demand for a Treasury maturity It reflects expected future policy, inflation, economic growth, and demand for government securities.
Savings-account APY The annualized yield a bank or credit union offers on a deposit account Institutions choose when and how much to reprice deposits, considering funding needs and competition.
Stock-market return The change in a security’s price plus dividends Expected earnings, risk appetite, inflation news, and company-specific developments can dominate rate effects.

That distinction prevents a common mistake: assuming a one-percentage-point policy move guarantees a one-percentage-point increase in every savings APY or Treasury yield.

What happens to bonds when interest rates rise?

Existing fixed-rate bond prices generally fall

A fixed-rate bond promises specified payments. Suppose an older bond pays a fixed coupon and newly issued bonds of similar credit quality begin offering higher yields. The older payments are less attractive to a prospective buyer. To make the older bond competitive, its market price generally has to fall until the buyer’s yield is comparable with available alternatives.

This inverse relationship is about market value, not a change to the bond’s contractual coupon. If the issuer remains able to pay, the coupon and scheduled principal payment do not automatically change when market yields move.

New buyers may receive higher yields

An investor buying after yields rise can often obtain a higher yield than was available earlier, all else equal. The improvement applies to new purchases and reinvested coupons, not to the market price of an older bond already held.

Holding to maturity is different from selling early

An individual bond held to its scheduled maturity has a different experience from one sold in the secondary market. A holder who keeps the bond and receives all promised payments does not realize the interim price decline, assuming no default. Selling before maturity converts the market-value change into a realized gain or loss.

Reinvestment is still a consideration: coupons received before maturity may be invested at higher or lower rates, and the bond’s purchasing-power outcome depends on inflation. “Hold to maturity” therefore describes the timing of the price risk; it does not guarantee a positive real return or eliminate credit risk.

Bond funds do not have one maturity date

A bond fund continually buys and sells securities and owns a portfolio with many maturities. Its share price responds to changes in the yields of the securities it holds, cash flows, credit conditions, and trading activity. It cannot be treated as an individual bond that simply pays a fixed amount on one known date.

Bond feature What to examine in a rising-rate period
Cash flow Is the coupon fixed, floating, or subject to a reset formula?
Time exposure What is the maturity, and how sensitive are the payments to yield changes?
Yield Is the quoted yield based on the current price, and are fees or call features included?
Exit plan Will you hold to maturity, or might you need to sell before then?
Credit quality Could issuer-specific deterioration overwhelm the effect of Treasury yields?

The Federal Reserve’s H.15 release, dated October 9, 2026, reports Treasury constant-maturity series. A quoted 10-year constant-maturity yield is an interpolated point on the Treasury yield curve; it does not require an outstanding security with exactly 10 years remaining. Any daily yield should therefore be labeled with its observation date and series rather than presented as a timeless rate.

Why the size of a bond loss varies

Price sensitivity depends on the timing of cash flows. Bonds with payments extending farther into the future generally have more exposure to a given yield change than bonds maturing soon, but the exact price response depends on the portfolio and the shape of the yield curve. The official material available for this explanation does not establish a universal percentage loss or a personalized duration calculation, so no single “one-point rise equals X percent loss” rule is reliable for every bond.

Are stocks good or bad when interest rates rise?

“Rates up, stocks down” is a useful risk to consider, not a dependable day-to-day forecast. Three main channels explain why higher rates can pressure equities.

Future cash flows become less valuable today

When investors use a higher discount rate, profits expected years from now are worth less in today’s valuation. Companies whose value depends heavily on distant growth can be especially sensitive to changing assumptions, although their actual prices also depend on whether they deliver better or worse growth than investors expected.

Borrowing becomes more expensive

Higher market rates can increase interest expense on new debt and, for some borrowers, on variable-rate obligations. A company may delay expansion, reduce hiring, or devote more cash to debt service. The impact is smaller for a company with substantial cash, fixed-rate debt, or strong pricing power, and larger for a highly leveraged business that must refinance soon.

Safer alternatives compete for capital

When cash and high-quality bonds offer higher yields, investors may require a greater expected return to own risky shares. That change in relative attractiveness can lower valuation multiples even if a company’s current earnings have not changed.

Kugler stated that “The current and expected future path of the federal funds rate also affects asset prices, as it changes the relative attractiveness of different investments, such as stocks and real estate.” The reverse channels can put downward pressure on aggregate demand and inflation when policymakers raise rates to restrain inflation, but the stock-market result still depends on the reason for the increase.

Situation accompanying the rate increase Possible stock-market implication Why the result is uncertain
Rates rise because inflation is persistent Valuations and demand may face pressure. Some companies can raise prices, and investors may already have anticipated the move.
Rates rise because economic growth is strong Financing costs increase, but revenues and earnings may improve. Profit growth can offset part of the valuation effect.
Rates rise unexpectedly Markets may reprice quickly across shares and bonds. The size depends on what prices had already incorporated.
Rates remain high while inflation falls Real yields and sector leadership may change. Future policy expectations can shift before the next rate decision.

The November 1–2, 2022 FOMC minutes illustrate why a simple prediction fails: equity indexes fell early in an intermeeting period and later rebounded, with inflation news and changing monetary-policy expectations among likely drivers. That historical episode is an example, not a forecast of present conditions.

Do savings-account rates go up when interest rates rise?

They can, but the pass-through is neither automatic nor uniform. Banks and credit unions set deposit rates based on funding needs, competition, account characteristics, and their view of future rates. Some accounts reprice quickly; others remain unchanged for months.

  • APY and whether it is variable or fixed;
  • monthly fees and how they reduce the effective return;
  • minimum opening or ongoing balance;
  • withdrawal, transfer, or access restrictions;
  • how and when the institution can change a variable rate.

Regulation DD disclosure guidance says variable-rate accounts should identify that the rate may change and explain the frequency or circumstances of changes. A high introductory APY is not equivalent to a guaranteed rate for the full period you intend to save.

CDs trade flexibility for a stated term

A certificate of deposit usually specifies a term and an early-withdrawal penalty. Compare the APY, term length, penalty formula, maturity date, grace period, and automatic-renewal terms. A higher fixed APY may be useful when you value certainty, but locking funds can be costly if you need cash or if rates rise further before maturity.

Deposit choice Rate behavior Main question in a rising-rate environment
Variable-rate savings account The institution may change the APY under disclosed terms. How quickly has this account historically repriced, and are access and fees acceptable?
Fixed-term CD The stated rate generally applies through the term, subject to the contract. Is the guaranteed return worth giving up access and the opportunity to reinvest at a higher rate?
Short-term Treasury or other cash alternative Yield changes as securities mature and are reinvested. What are the maturity schedule, tax treatment, and liquidity requirements?

Rate-sensitive depositors can move money

Federal banking agencies have noted that depositors seeking higher yields may transfer funds when more attractive returns become available. That behavior can influence how institutions price deposits, but it does not mean every bank will match every competitor. Historical agency guidance on deposit insurance is not a current limit; verify present eligibility and coverage in current FDIC materials before concentrating large balances.

How one rate increase affects different people

Person or position Potential benefit Potential cost or risk
Cash saver with a variable APY The account may reprice upward, increasing interest income. The institution may pass through only part of the increase, or later reduce the APY.
Buyer of a new fixed-rate bond Higher market yields can improve the starting income. Prices can fall again if yields rise further after purchase.
Holder selling an older fixed-rate bond None from the rate move itself; proceeds may be reinvested at higher yields. The sale may realize a market-value loss.
Long-term bond-fund investor Portfolio income can improve as securities mature and are replaced. Net asset value can decline while the portfolio adjusts.
Company shareholder Strong economic growth behind the increase may support earnings. Valuation multiples, demand, or interest expense may deteriorate.
Borrower with variable-rate debt There is no direct benefit from higher rates. Required interest payments can increase as the loan resets.

Your result therefore depends on contract terms, maturity, liquidity needs, and the economic conditions causing rates to move. A saver and a borrower can experience the same policy announcement in opposite ways.

A practical checklist before you change anything

  1. Identify the rate. Determine whether the news concerns the federal funds target, a Treasury yield, your account APY, or a loan’s reset rate.
  2. Read the terms. Check whether your deposit rate is variable, whether a CD has a penalty and renewal clause, and whether debt is fixed or variable.
  3. Separate price from income. A bond can pay its scheduled coupon while its resale price falls; a bond fund’s distribution income and share price can move differently.
  4. Match the maturity to the goal. Money needed soon should not depend on selling a rate-sensitive asset at an unknown price.
  5. Compare the complete return. Include APY, fees, taxes where relevant, credit risk, liquidity, and inflation rather than choosing solely by the largest advertised number.
  6. Check expectations. Markets may have priced in a widely anticipated decision, while a surprise or a change in the expected future path can matter more.
  7. Avoid universal forecasts. Official sources do not establish a single average stock loss, bond loss, or savings-APY increase for every rate hike.

Dated U.S. context for 2026

The Federal Reserve’s Monetary Policy Report submitted July 10, 2026 said the FOMC had maintained a federal funds target range of 3-1/2 to 3-3/4 percent since the beginning of 2026. The same report said inflation remained elevated relative to the Committee’s 2 percent longer-run goal. Those are dated policy observations, not proof that rates are rising on October 17, 2026.

The Federal Reserve’s monetary-policy page lists an FOMC statement released September 16, 2026, and minutes released October 7, 2026. Use the statement and minutes for the policy rationale and forward guidance rather than treating a news headline as a complete description of the rate path. For market-rate data, the H.15 release dated October 9, 2026 provides the observation date and the constant-maturity methodology needed to interpret Treasury yields correctly.

The bottom line for each asset

  • Stocks: Higher rates can reduce present valuations, raise financing costs, and make interest-bearing alternatives more competitive, but earnings and expectations determine the actual outcome.
  • Bonds: New issues may offer higher yields, while existing fixed-rate bonds generally fall in resale value when comparable yields rise. Maturity, cash-flow timing, credit quality, and whether you sell early all matter.
  • Savings accounts and CDs: Deposit yields may increase, but institutions pass through policy changes unevenly. Compare APY, fees, access, variability, term, penalties, and renewal terms.
