Retail investors generally access robotics in two ways: buying shares of individual listed companies or buying an exchange-traded thematic fund. Neither route is automatically diversified or suitable. A robotics fund may own industrial automation manufacturers, sensor and semiconductor suppliers, artificial-intelligence companies, or businesses that apply robotics, so its name alone does not tell you what you own. Before investing, read the current prospectus, index methodology, holdings, geography, concentration, costs and risk disclosures.
How can I invest in robotics?
Your choice is mainly between researching individual companies and using a listed fund. You can also combine the two, but the risks are different.

Buy individual listed companies
Buying a single company gives you direct exposure to that business’s revenue, margins, balance sheet, customers and technology roadmap. A company may sell robot arms, warehouse systems, machine-vision equipment, industrial software, semiconductors or services used by automated factories. That specificity can make your investment thesis clearer than a broad thematic fund.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe trade-off is concentration. A product launch, lost customer, patent dispute, manufacturing problem, accounting issue or management decision can move one share sharply. Individual-company research also requires checking whether robotics is the company’s main business or only a small division. A company marketed as a robotics play may derive most of its sales from unrelated products.

Buy an exchange-traded thematic fund
An exchange-traded fund (ETF) pools many securities and trades during market hours. A robotics ETF can reduce the effect of one company’s failure, but it does not remove theme risk. If most holdings depend on capital spending by manufacturers, an industrial slowdown can pressure many holdings at once.
Funds also differ in what they call robotics. One portfolio may emphasize factory automation; another may include artificial intelligence, chips, medical devices or autonomous systems. Read the investment objective and index rules rather than relying on the fund name.
Use a blended approach
A blended approach might use a broad, diversified portfolio as the core and a small robotics allocation as a satellite position. The appropriate size depends on your time horizon, emergency savings, debts, tax position and ability to tolerate losses. This is a framework for thinking about risk, not individualized investment advice.
What does a robotics ETF actually own?
Robotics is an ecosystem rather than a single industry classification. A fund’s methodology may assign companies to several layers of that ecosystem:

- Industrial automation: robot makers, factory-control equipment and automated production systems.
- Enabling technologies: sensors, machine vision, motion control, semiconductors, networking and software.
- Artificial intelligence: companies whose algorithms or computing hardware support perception, planning or autonomous operation.
- Applications: warehouse automation, logistics, healthcare, agriculture, security or other businesses using robots.
That breadth can be useful, but it creates a definition problem. A fund can satisfy a robotics label while holding companies with only partial or indirect exposure. Check the current holdings list, each holding’s weighting, and the rules used to decide eligibility.
Questions to ask about the index
- What percentage of a company’s revenue or business activity must relate to robotics, automation or artificial intelligence?
- Does the index use fixed eligibility rules, analyst judgment, or both?
- How often are holdings rebalanced and reconstituted?
- Are weights equal, capped, market-capitalization based or concentrated in the largest companies?
- Are cash, derivatives, depositary receipts or smaller companies permitted?
These details determine whether the fund behaves like a focused robotics portfolio, a diversified technology basket or something in between.
How to compare robotics funds
No single fund can be called the best for every investor. Compare the following dimensions together, using documents dated to the same period whenever possible.
| Comparison area | What to inspect | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Mandate and methodology | Investment objective, eligibility tests, index provider, rebalancing schedule and weighting limits | Reveals what the fund considers robotics and how the portfolio can change |
| Holdings and concentration | Top 10 positions, number of holdings, largest weight and sector overlap | A long holdings list can still conceal heavy exposure to a few companies or industries |
| Geography and company size | Country weights, developed or emerging-market exposure, large-, mid- and small-cap holdings | Countries have different currencies, regulations, market structures and political risks |
| Costs | Expense ratio, bid-ask spread, commissions, trading frequency and tax consequences | Costs reduce returns and may be material for a narrowly focused fund |
| Performance | Matching one-, five- and ten-year periods, benchmark results and total-return assumptions | Different end dates or calculation methods can make an apparently favorable comparison misleading |
| Risk disclosures | Prospectus and shareholder-report discussion of sector, country, currency and technology risks | Shows how the fund itself describes possible loss scenarios |
ROBO: dated cost and performance figures
The ROBO Global Robotics and Automation Index ETF’s SEC-filed annual shareholder report for the year ended April 30, 2026, listed a 0.95% expense ratio. The same report showed a 58.93% return for that one-year period, a 4.82% annualized five-year return and a 12.63% annualized ten-year return. Those are historical fund-level results for the stated periods, not forecasts and not industry-wide statistics. The report also provides corresponding benchmark returns, which should be reviewed alongside the fund figures.

BOTZ: a different reporting period
The Global X Robotics & Artificial Intelligence ETF’s SEC-filed annual shareholder report for the year ended November 30, 2025, listed a 0.68% expense ratio and a 6.12% return for that reporting year. Because the reporting period ends seven months earlier than ROBO’s, the one-year figures are not a direct ranking. They also reflect different portfolios, benchmarks, market exposures and fee levels.
IRBO and changing fund names
A 2024 SEC filing identified the iShares Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Multisector ETF by ticker IRBO. A later iShares report called the fund the iShares Future AI & Tech ETF and noted its former name. This illustrates why a ticker, name and stated strategy must be checked immediately before a purchase. A familiar name may no longer describe the current mandate.
For any fund, obtain the latest prospectus, shareholder report, holdings file and website disclosures. If the documents disagree, use the most recent regulatory filing and investigate the reason for the change.
Understanding robotics-investing costs
The expense ratio is the annual operating cost deducted from fund assets. It is not usually charged as a separate bill, but it lowers the fund’s net asset value over time. The 0.95% ROBO figure and 0.68% BOTZ figure above come from different reporting years and are not a complete current price comparison.

Also consider costs that do not appear in the headline expense ratio:
- Bid-ask spread: the gap between the price at which you can buy and sell. Thinly traded thematic funds can have wider spreads.
- Brokerage charges: account providers may impose commissions, foreign-exchange charges or other transaction fees, depending on jurisdiction and account type.
- Portfolio turnover: frequent rebalancing can create trading costs and taxable distributions.
- Currency exposure: overseas holdings can gain or lose value as exchange rates move relative to your home currency.
- Taxes: dividends, capital gains and fund distributions are treated differently across countries and account types.
Compare the fund’s total cost of ownership, not just its expense ratio, and verify the figures for your country and account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret robotics-fund performance
Performance needs a date, a measurement period and a benchmark. A one-year result can be dominated by a particular market rally or decline, while an annualized five-year result smooths several years into a compound rate. Neither tells you what will happen next.

Are robotics stocks and funds risky?
Yes. The risks are not limited to ordinary share-price volatility. ROBO Global investor materials identify several risks relevant to robotics-focused exposure:
- Limited markets: a narrow theme can have fewer businesses and revenue sources than a broad-market fund.
- Business cycles: manufacturers may postpone automation projects during recessions, reducing orders for equipment and software.
- World economic growth: demand can depend on global investment, trade and industrial production.
- Technological progress: rapid innovation can benefit a holding, but it can also make an existing product obsolete.
- Rapid obsolescence: companies may need continual research spending to remain competitive.
- Government regulation: rules covering data, safety, employment, exports, artificial intelligence and autonomous systems can raise costs or restrict products.
Additional practical risks include valuation risk, supply-chain dependence, customer concentration, currency movements and overlap with other technology funds you already own. A fund can hold dozens of securities and still fall substantially when the same economic or technological factor affects most of them.
A step-by-step due-diligence process
- Define the role in your portfolio. Decide whether robotics is a small thematic allocation, a substitute for a sector fund or your primary equity exposure. Do not assume the label determines the risk.
- Read the current objective and prospectus. Record the permitted securities, geographic scope, derivatives policy, rebalancing rules and principal risks.
- Download current holdings. Note the number of positions, top-10 percentage, largest company, sector mix and country weights. Look for overlap with funds you already own.
- Check the index methodology. Find the revenue or activity test, weighting formula, caps, reconstitution dates and treatment of mergers or delistings.
- Verify costs. Confirm the latest expense ratio and examine spread, turnover, commissions, currency charges and tax treatment for your account.
- Align performance periods. Compare matching dates, total-return data and each fund’s stated benchmark. Label every number with its period.
- Stress-test the thesis. Ask what happens if factory spending slows, a new technology displaces current products, regulations tighten or a major country becomes inaccessible.
- Choose an implementation rule. Decide in advance how much you will invest, whether purchases will be staged, when you will rebalance and what would invalidate your thesis.
- Recheck after changes. Review notices about name changes, index revisions, mergers, fee changes and material shifts in holdings before adding money.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying the name: assuming every holding is a pure robotics company.
- Confusing diversification with a high share count: many holdings can share the same country, customer base or technology risk.
- Comparing unmatched returns: treating ROBO’s year ended April 30, 2026, and BOTZ’s year ended November 30, 2025, as if they covered the same market days.
- Ignoring fees because the theme is exciting: recurring costs compound against you regardless of the narrative.
- Chasing a recent surge: using a one-year return as a forecast.
- Failing to verify a changed mandate: relying on an old fund name, ticker description or downloaded holdings file.
- Overlooking portfolio overlap: owning the same large technology companies through several funds without realizing it.
Is investing in robotics a good idea?
It can be reasonable for an investor who understands the theme, accepts concentrated technology and industrial risks, and can tolerate substantial volatility. It is less appropriate as a substitute for a diversified core portfolio or for money needed soon. The decision should follow your portfolio role, time horizon and loss tolerance rather than a recent performance headline.
