Use AIS as a reconciliation and feedback tool, not as a substitute for your own transaction history. The exact scheme and the acquisition and transfer dates also matter because Section 50AA treatment has date-sensitive rules, including a definition change effective 1 April 2026.
What documents do I need for debt mutual fund capital gains?
Start a digital folder for the financial year in which you sold units. Save the following records in their original downloadable format, along with a readable copy:

- Capital-gains or transaction statement: Download the tax-year report from the asset-management company (AMC), registrar and transfer agent (RTA), broker or investment platform. It should show purchases, redemptions, switches, units, dates, NAVs, sale proceeds and the platform’s cost or gain calculation when available.
- Purchase evidence: Keep each purchase confirmation, allotment statement, contract note or transaction receipt showing the purchase date, number of units and amount or NAV. This is especially important when an older lot is not fully represented in a current summary.
- Redemption evidence: Retain the redemption confirmation and account statement showing the redemption date, units sold, applicable NAV and proceeds credited or payable.
- Lot-level history: Export the complete transaction history when you used a systematic investment plan (SIP), made multiple purchases, switched between schemes, transferred units or redeemed only part of your holding. A single annual total cannot show which purchase lots were matched to the units sold.
- Bank and demat records: Keep bank statements showing payments and redemption receipts. If the units were held through a demat account, retain the depository statement and contract notes that establish movements or holdings.
- Scheme identity: Save the scheme name, plan and option, folio or account number, ISIN where shown, and documents identifying its investment category. Classification can affect which tax rule applies.
- Tax-portal records: Download the relevant year’s Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Form 26AS. AIS contains broader reported information and an online feedback facility; Form 26AS is principally the statement for tax deducted at source (TDS) and tax collected at source (TCS).
- Filed return and computation: Preserve the income-tax return acknowledgement, schedules and your supporting capital-gains calculation with the source records. The official material does not establish one general statutory retention period for every individual’s supporting papers, so keeping a complete, retrievable file is the prudent approach.
These records let you demonstrate how consideration received, acquisition cost and eligible transfer expenses were determined. The Income Tax Department’s capital-gains guidance treats those components as the foundation of the computation.
Why purchase-lot records matter for SIPs and partial redemptions
Mutual-fund units are often bought in many lots. If you redeem fewer units than you own, the tax result depends on which acquisition lots are treated as sold. The SFT guidance describes matching purchases and redemptions using first-in, first-out (FIFO) and calculating the holding period from that match. Your own lot schedule should therefore be more detailed than a statement that merely says “units sold.”

Build a lot schedule
For each purchase, record the transaction date, units allotted, amount paid, NAV, folio and any identifiable costs. For each redemption, record the date, units, NAV, gross proceeds and charges. Then link redeemed units to the earliest available purchase lots under the FIFO method used for the relevant report. Show the remaining units in each lot after the sale.
Include switches and transfers
A switch out is generally a transfer from one scheme to another rather than a simple internal bookkeeping entry. Keep the switch-out confirmation, switch-in allotment statement and both schemes’ identifiers. The dates and values on those documents are needed to establish what was transferred and the acquisition history of the units received. Likewise, preserve transfer statements if units moved between folios, holders or platforms.
Do not rely on a weighted-average cost
A spreadsheet that divides total investment by total units may hide the lot and date information needed for a partial redemption. Keep the individual lots even when your platform presents an average cost or a single gain figure.

What should the transaction statement prove?
| Record or field | Why you need it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Scheme name, plan and option | Identifies the asset and supports classification under the applicable rule | Names are consistent across AMC, RTA, platform and tax-portal files |
| Purchase date and allotment date | Establishes the acquisition lot and holding period | Dates are recorded for every SIP instalment and one-time purchase |
| Units and NAV | Allows an independent reconstruction of cost and proceeds | Unit quantities reconcile to statements after rounding |
| Amount paid and redemption proceeds | Supports consideration and acquisition-cost figures | Gross and net amounts, charges and taxes are distinguishable |
| Redemption or transfer date | Determines the tax year and applicable date-based rules | The date matches the confirmation and bank credit where relevant |
| Folio, account or demat reference | Connects documents that come from different systems | Transfers or consolidated statements have not dropped a folio |
Does AIS show mutual-fund capital gains?
AIS gives you a broad view of information reported to the tax department and lets you submit online feedback on entries. Mutual-fund transaction information may be used to prefill gain, income or loss fields. However, the SFT guidance describes some sale-consideration and acquisition-cost figures as estimates based on available RTA information and allows the taxpayer to modify them before filing.

That means AIS can alert you to a reported redemption, but it is not a complete capital-gains ledger. Compare every prefilled amount with your AMC, RTA, broker or platform records. If AIS omits a transaction, duplicates one or shows an implausible cost, investigate the underlying statement and retain a note explaining the correction or feedback you submitted.
Is Form 26AS enough for mutual-fund tax reporting?
No. Form 26AS and AIS serve different purposes. The department describes Form 26AS as the display for TDS and TCS information, while other taxpayer information is available in AIS. A debt-fund redemption may not produce a TDS entry that captures your capital gain, so a clean Form 26AS does not prove that the sale has been fully reported.
| Portal record | Main use | What it cannot replace |
|---|---|---|
| AIS | Review reported transactions and provide feedback on inaccurate or incomplete information | Purchase confirmations, lot matching, cost evidence or your final computation |
| Form 26AS | Reconcile TDS/TCS credits and related entries | The mutual-fund transaction statement or capital-gains working |
How to reconcile your records before filing
- Download the source files. Obtain the AMC, RTA, broker or platform transaction history for the financial year, plus the year’s AIS and Form 26AS. Save the download date and the file names.
- List every taxable-looking event. Include redemptions, switch-outs, transfers and any other disposal shown in your statements. Separate purchases from disposals so no lot is treated as both.
- Match lots using the documented method. For each redemption, connect units to purchase lots in FIFO order where that is the applicable matching approach. Record the acquisition date and cost attached to each matched lot.
- Recalculate the amounts. Check units multiplied by the relevant NAV, gross consideration, reasonable eligible transfer expenses and the resulting gain or loss. Preserve the spreadsheet or written working that produced the figures.
- Compare with AIS. Check scheme identity, transaction date, units, sale consideration and cost. Treat prefilled figures as reviewable inputs, not final answers, and use the AIS feedback facility when a reported entry is wrong or incomplete.
- Check Form 26AS separately. Reconcile any TDS or TCS credit that you intend to claim. Do not infer that a missing TDS line means no capital-gains reporting is required.
- Resolve differences before submission. Ask the reporting institution for a corrected statement when possible. If you adjust a prefilled number, retain the source document and a short note describing why.
- Archive the final set. Keep the filed return, acknowledgement, computation, source statements and reconciliation note together so the figures can be explained later.
How the fund and transaction dates affect Section 50AA
Do not assume that every investment casually called a “debt mutual fund” follows one identical rate or holding-period rule. The exact scheme, acquisition date and transfer date must be identified first.
Units acquired on or after 1 April 2023
The Income Tax Department’s Section 50AA material states that specified-mutual-fund units acquired on or after 1 April 2023 are subject to the provision’s deemed-short-term treatment. Keep the purchase confirmation and scheme documents that allow you, or your adviser, to test whether the fund falls within the definition.
Rank #3
Definition change effective 1 April 2026
The statutory page says the specified-mutual-fund definition is substituted with effect from 1 April 2026. Under the substituted definition, it covers a mutual fund investing more than 65% of total proceeds in debt and money-market instruments, or a fund investing 65% or more in units of such a fund. The department’s capital-gains explainer presents the transition as “Up to AY 2025-26” and “From AY 2026-27.”
Because the rule is date-sensitive, retain evidence of both acquisition and transfer, and identify the relevant assessment year. Do not apply a single holding-period or rate assumption without checking the scheme’s classification and the taxpayer’s circumstances.
What counts as evidence of acquisition cost?
Acquisition cost generally begins with the value paid to acquire the asset, together with reasonable acquisition expenses recognized under the applicable guidance. Your strongest evidence is the original allotment or purchase record showing amount and units. If a platform has closed, merged accounts or lost older data, combine RTA statements, bank debits, demat records and archived email confirmations, then document how you reconstructed each lot.

Common record-keeping problems and fixes
Only an annual gain total is available
Request a detailed capital-gains report or complete transaction export from the AMC, RTA, broker or platform. A total without dates and units cannot reliably support SIP lot matching.
AIS and the platform statement disagree
Compare the transaction date, scheme identifier, units and gross consideration first. Look for a switch recorded as a redemption, duplicate reporting from two intermediaries or an estimate that used incomplete cost data. Keep both versions, obtain clarification and record the final basis for any edit or feedback.
Older purchase confirmations are missing
Search archived email, bank statements, RTA consolidated account statements and demat records. Mark which fields are directly evidenced and which were reconstructed. If a material cost or classification issue remains unresolved, obtain professional tax advice rather than guessing.
Units were held in more than one place
Collect statements for every folio, broker and demat account, then remove duplicates by checking folio numbers, transaction references and unit balances. Consolidation can hide a lot if you use only one provider’s report.

When should you involve a tax professional?
Consider help from a qualified Indian tax professional when acquisition costs are missing, there are many SIP lots or switches, AIS data cannot be corrected, units were transferred between holders, your residence status is non-resident, or you cannot determine the fund’s Section 50AA classification for the relevant dates. Give the adviser your original statements, lot schedule, AIS, Form 26AS and reconciliation notes; do not provide only the prefilled tax-portal number.
A practical digital filing system
Create one folder per financial year with subfolders named Purchases, Redemptions and switches, Bank and demat, AIS and 26AS and Filed return. Use file names that include the date, scheme and folio, such as 2025-07-14_SchemeName_Folio123_Redemption.pdf. Keep the original PDF or spreadsheet as well as any annotated copy, and back up the folder in a separate secure location. An optional paper accordion file can help with physical notices, but it does not replace the digital statements and transaction-level evidence.
Final pre-filing checklist
- Every redemption and switch-out for the year appears in your transaction history.
- Each disposal is linked to the correct purchase lots and dates.
- Units, NAVs, consideration, costs and eligible expenses reconcile to source documents.
- The scheme identity and investment category are recorded.
- You checked the acquisition and transfer dates against the applicable Section 50AA definition.
- AIS was reviewed and any discrepancy was investigated or given feedback.
- Form 26AS was checked for TDS/TCS credits separately from capital gains.
- Your filed return and computation are stored with the evidence used to prepare them.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I keep mutual-fund sale records?
The official material does not establish one universal retention period for every individual’s supporting documents. Keep the source statements, reconciliation and filed return together for as long as you may need to substantiate the filing under applicable tax and assessment rules.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I file using the gain shown by my investment app?
Use the app’s report as a starting point, then verify its lots, dates, units, proceeds and cost against AMC, RTA, bank or demat evidence and reconcile the result with AIS.
What if my fund statement and AIS show different sale consideration?
Check whether the AIS figure is an estimate, whether a transaction was duplicated or omitted, and whether gross versus net proceeds were used. Retain the reliable source statement, submit AIS feedback when appropriate and document any amount you change before filing.
