It measures potential magnitude, not direction, and it is neither a promise nor a statistically guaranteed trading range. The most common quick calculation adds the premiums of a near-the-money call and put with the same strike and expiration, then divides that straddle cost by the stock price.
What an options-implied move actually measures
When traders say a stock has an “expected move,” they usually mean the size of price change that current option prices are implying for a chosen expiration. The estimate comes from the market prices of options, which embed supply and demand, time remaining, volatility assumptions, interest rates, dividends and the quality of the available quotes.

For an earnings announcement or another scheduled catalyst, the figure is often presented as a percentage. If the stock trades at $100 and the relevant options imply an 8% move, the market is pricing a possible move of roughly $8 in either direction by the selected expiration. That statement does not mean the stock is expected to rise 8%, fall 8%, or necessarily move exactly $8.

- It is tied to time: the expiration and the timestamp of the quotes are essential.
- It is not directional: a symmetric call-and-put calculation does not identify up versus down.
- It is not a guaranteed boundary: the stock can finish inside, outside or near the implied range.
How the common ATM-straddle calculation works
1. Select the stock price and event-related expiration
Choose an expiration that clearly covers the event you are analyzing. For earnings, that might be the first weekly expiration after the announcement, but a later monthly contract measures a different period. Record the date and time of the quote; option prices can change materially as the event approaches.

2. Choose a near-the-money strike
Find a call and put with the same strike and expiration, with that strike close to the current stock price. This paired position is an at-the-money (ATM) straddle. If the stock is at $100, a $100 strike is the obvious choice; if no exact strike is available, use the closest practical strike and state that it is near-the-money rather than exact.
3. Add the call and put premiums
Use comparable quotes for both options. The quick estimate is:
Straddle premium = call premium + put premium
For example, suppose the $100 call is quoted at $4.20 and the $100 put at $3.80. The combined premium is $8.00 per share. An options contract generally represents 100 shares, so the straddle would cost about $800 per contract before commissions and other costs, but the percentage calculation uses the per-share amount.
4. Divide by the stock price
Divide the combined premium by the stock price used at the same timestamp:
Implied move percentage = (call premium + put premium) ÷ stock price
With an $8 straddle and a $100 stock:
$8 ÷ $100 = 0.08, or 8%
The corresponding rough price band is $92 to $108. It is better described as “the ATM straddle prices an approximately 8% move by this expiration” than as “the stock will stay between $92 and $108.”

Does an implied move predict direction?
No. A standard ATM straddle combines a call, which benefits from a rise, and a put, which benefits from a fall. Its premium reflects the cost of exposure to movement in either direction. The calculation therefore gives a two-sided magnitude estimate rather than a bullish or bearish forecast.

Cboe describes the VIX as a “non-directional (up or down) forecast” because it is derived from implied prices of one-month S&P 500 Index option strips. That description applies directly to the directional limitation of volatility measures, although VIX is an index measure and should not be treated as a stock-specific straddle statistic. For an individual stock, the ATM-straddle inference is the same: the number alone does not tell you which way the next move will be.
A call price that appears rich relative to a put can contain directional information through skew, demand for hedges or other positioning. But that is a separate analysis. The simple call-plus-put total should not be presented as a direction signal.
Why the number changes as the event approaches
Implied volatility often rises as a known event gets closer. If the option premiums rise while the stock price is unchanged, the straddle-based percentage estimate rises too. Conversely, volatility can fall after the announcement, sometimes sharply, even if the stock price moves in the direction traders expected. This post-event decline is commonly called volatility crush.
Because the inputs are live market prices, an estimate calculated Monday morning is not a fixed property of the stock. Recalculate it with a clear timestamp, quote source and expiration. When comparing two figures, first check whether one was captured before a major repricing, during a wide spread or after the event.
- Record the stock price, call bid and ask, put bid and ask, and the time.
- State whether you used bid, ask, midpoint or a vendor’s theoretical price.
- Note how many trading days remain and whether the expiration is before or after the catalyst.
- Recheck the estimate when the stock moves substantially or the event is imminent.
Expiration is part of the forecast
An implied move is never just a percentage detached from a date. A weekly option expiring immediately after earnings captures a short event window. A monthly option expiring several weeks later includes additional time in which ordinary market movement, news and volatility can affect the stock. The two premiums should not be compared as if they describe the same forecast.

Some data services use a model-derived earnings calculation instead of simply adding one ATM call and put. Cboe LiveVol describes estimating earnings information by examining implied-volatility differences in option expirations after the earnings date. That approach can produce a figure that differs from a raw straddle ratio because it isolates, or attempts to isolate, event volatility across expirations.
Whenever a platform labels a number “expected move,” identify its definition. Ask whether it is:
- an ATM straddle premium divided by the underlying price;
- a volatility-based range generated by a pricing model;
- an event-volatility estimate inferred from several expirations; or
- a vendor-specific blend of these inputs.
What goes into option-implied volatility calculations
Quote selection and the underlying price
Cboe LiveVol says its implied-volatility inputs use option mid-prices based on the national best bid and offer (NBBO). It typically uses a mid-market underlying price and may use a smoothed theoretical underlier in some circumstances. A platform using last trade, midpoint or a theoretical price can therefore show a different result from another platform at the same moment.

Model-based calculations also account for interest rates, expected dividends and the chosen option-pricing model. Methodologies can interpolate between available strikes or expirations and extrapolate when the listed chain does not provide a directly usable point. These choices matter most when the chain is sparse or the event falls between standard expirations.
Liquidity and spread quality
A midpoint is only informative when the bid and ask are reasonably close and both sides represent executable interest. The SEC has warned that wide bid-ask spreads and inconsistent trading can distort volatility calculations for thinly traded shares. If a $2.00 call has a $1.00 bid and a $3.00 ask, its displayed midpoint may not be a realistic transaction price. Treat the resulting implied move as low-confidence and show the spread alongside the estimate.
How to compare two implied-move estimates
Two websites can report different percentages without either one being mathematically wrong. Use this checklist before deciding that one is inaccurate.

| Comparison point | What to verify | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Timestamp | Date, time and whether quotes were live or delayed | Premiums and the stock price move continuously, especially before news |
| Quote source | NBBO midpoint, last trade, bid/ask or theoretical quote | Different prices produce different premiums and volatility |
| Expiration | Exact expiration date and whether it spans the catalyst | More time includes more ordinary price risk and time value |
| Strike | Exact ATM or nearest available strike | Distance from the stock price changes call-put costs and skew exposure |
| Method | Raw straddle ratio or model/event-volatility estimate | Models may use several expirations and remove or isolate baseline volatility |
| Liquidity | Bid-ask width, trading frequency and open interest | Stale or wide quotes make a midpoint less reliable |
| Underlying treatment | Mid-market, last price or smoothed theoretical price | The denominator and implied-volatility inversion can change |
What the implied range can—and cannot—tell you
It can show the market’s priced magnitude
The estimate is useful for framing what option prices require before expiration. An 8% straddle estimate is a larger priced move than a 3% estimate, all else equal. It can help an investor judge whether an option strategy is expensive relative to the event risk being priced, or whether a planned stock position would be exposed to a potentially large gap.

No stock-level hit rate for ATM-straddle implied moves is established here, and there is no general percentage that tells you how often the realized move will fall inside the quoted band. Do not convert the band into a guaranteed boundary or claim that it contains the stock a fixed percentage of the time.
Cboe’s example that a VIX level of 16 corresponds to a plus-or-minus 16% one-year range 68% of the time is a one-standard-deviation explanation for an index volatility measure. It is not a historical accuracy statistic for an individual stock’s earnings straddle and should not be transferred to that use.
It cannot separate event risk from ordinary time risk by itself
A longer-dated option contains both the anticipated catalyst and the volatility of the days or weeks after it. A raw straddle premium therefore may overstate the size of the single event if the expiration is far beyond the announcement. Event-specific methods that compare expirations can attempt to isolate that component, but their definition and assumptions must be checked.
A practical workflow for using an expected move
- Define the question. Decide whether you want the move through earnings, through a particular date or over the entire option expiration.
- Choose the contract. Select the nearest liquid strike to the stock price and an expiration that covers the period you care about.
- Capture the market data. Record the timestamp, stock price, call and put bid/ask quotes, and any displayed implied volatility.
- Calculate the raw estimate. Add comparable call and put premiums, divide by the stock price, and convert the result to a percentage.
- Inspect quote quality. Reject or qualify the result if spreads are unusually wide, quotes are stale or trades are infrequent.
- Check the platform’s definition. If its number differs, determine whether it uses a model, multiple expirations, a theoretical underlier or an event-volatility adjustment.
- Interpret both sides. Express the result as an approximate up-and-down magnitude, not as a directional call or certainty.
- Update before acting. Recalculate after a major stock move, volatility change or passage of time.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Calling it a guaranteed range
Mistake: “The stock will remain within the implied move.”
Correction: Say that option prices are pricing an approximate magnitude for a stated expiration. Actual outcomes can be smaller or larger.
Using the wrong expiration
Mistake: Applying a monthly expiration’s percentage to an earnings announcement that occurs days earlier.
Correction: Use an expiration that matches the event window, or explain the additional time included.

Ignoring the timestamp
Mistake: Reusing an estimate from several sessions before the announcement.
Correction: Label the calculation with its timestamp and refresh it as quotes change.
Reading direction into a two-sided number
Mistake: Treating a high expected move as bullish or bearish.
Correction: Treat it as movement risk. Analyze skew or other directional indicators separately if that is your objective.
Trusting a midpoint in an illiquid chain
Mistake: Treating a midpoint between very wide quotes as a firm market price.
Correction: Display the spread, consider executable bid/ask assumptions, and downgrade confidence when trading is sparse.
Quoting a vendor number without its method
Mistake: Comparing two “expected move” percentages as though they use the same formula.
Correction: Identify the strike, expiration, quote source, underlying treatment and whether the figure is a raw straddle or model-derived estimate.
Bottom line for investors
An options-implied move is best used as a transparent description of what current option prices are charging for movement over a defined period. The ATM-straddle shortcut—call premium plus put premium, divided by the stock price—is easy to reproduce, but its usefulness depends on matching the expiration to the event, using credible quotes and reporting the timestamp. It tells you how much movement is being priced, not whether the stock will rise or fall, how often the stock will stay inside the range, or what the final price must be.
