What Open Banking Means for Your Credit Score and Equifax Report: UK Guide (2026)

Linking a bank account through open banking does not, by itself, create a new credit account on your Equifax report or automatically raise or lower your Equifax score. It gives an authorised organisation access to payment-account information—such as balances, limits and incoming and outgoing transactions—so that organisation can analyse your finances. A lender may use that extra information in its own affordability or creditworthiness model, which can change an application decision even when your consumer-facing score does not change.

The connection is optional in the Equifax open-banking process and is made under separate consent terms. You can ask what data will be accessed, how long access will last and how to withdraw it before you agree.

What open banking is in an Equifax application

Open banking is a permission-based method for sharing payment-account data with an approved organisation. You choose an account and instruct the service to connect to it. Your bank or other payment provider then uses strong authentication to verify you. Once authorised, the recipient can obtain transaction information and create analysis for the service you requested.

Equifax describes the information available through this process as including account balances, overdraft or credit limits, and incoming and outgoing transactions with amounts and descriptions. The service may consolidate and categorise those transactions and display an expense breakdown. This is cash-flow information, not simply a pre-existing credit score.

What happens to the data

  1. You select the payment account you want to connect and give an explicit instruction through the open-banking tool.
  2. Your payment provider authenticates you, commonly with its normal strong-authentication process.
  3. The approved recipient receives the permitted transaction and account information.
  4. The service organises the data, for example by grouping income, bills and discretionary spending.
  5. Under Equifax’s privacy terms, the transaction data and any analysis can be shared with the approved recipient you authorised. That recipient generally uses it to assess your financial circumstances or deliver the service you requested.

A joint notice from the UK credit-reference agencies says payment-account information may also be collected through open banking among the wider data sources used by credit-reference agencies. That notice does not say that every raw transaction line automatically becomes an ordinary credit-account entry, or “tradeline”, on your consumer report.

Does linking your bank account change your Equifax score?

The cited Equifax materials do not describe an automatic score adjustment merely because you granted open-banking access. They establish that transaction data can be accessed and analysed, and that a lender may consider the resulting information. Whether anything affects a score depends on the particular lender, product and scoring process.

Equifax states that lenders cannot see your Equifax credit score. Instead, a lender receives the information that makes up the report and applies its own model. It may also add details from your application, such as salary or employment history. Consequently, an application can be accepted or declined without the displayed Equifax score changing, and a score can remain unchanged even when a lender reaches a different decision after reviewing cash-flow data.

What will normally appear on the report

Connecting a current account is not described as an automatic new borrowing account, missed-payment marker or public-record entry. Ordinary credit-reference processing is separate from the optional connection you make for a particular open-banking service. If a lender later reports a credit account, balance, repayment status or search in the usual way, those items can appear under the normal reporting rules; the account connection itself is not evidence that such an entry has been created.

How a lender can use open-banking information

A lender can use transaction-level evidence to understand affordability and financial resilience. It might examine regular income, recurring commitments, overdraft use, large changes in spending or whether stated figures are consistent with account activity. The lender decides which variables matter and how they are weighted. There is no universal open-banking score and no rule requiring every lender to use the data in the same way.

Example of a possible benefit

The UK Government’s Financial Inclusion Strategy describes a Capital One UK initiative in which some applicants who would otherwise be declined using credit-bureau information alone could opt to link Open Banking data. The lender could then consider additional affordability and creditworthiness insight for possible pre-approval. This is an example of an alternative underwriting route, not a promise that linking will secure credit or improve a score.

If you are offered this option, ask the lender:

  • Whether the connection is genuinely optional or required for the product.
  • Which accounts, transaction categories and date ranges will be accessed.
  • Whether the information is used for affordability, risk scoring, identity checks, or all three.
  • How long the lender keeps the raw data and any derived analysis.
  • How to withdraw access and whether withdrawal affects an application already in progress.

Credit-file assessment versus open-banking-enhanced assessment

Aspect Conventional credit-file assessment Assessment that also uses open banking
Data scope Reported credit accounts, repayment history, searches and public records held by a credit-reference agency. The credit-file information plus consented payment-account balances, limits and incoming and outgoing transactions.
Your control Credit-reference reporting and lender processes generally operate under their applicable legal bases and reporting arrangements. You initiate an account connection through the service terms and can use the stated withdrawal process.
Decision maker The lender applies its own affordability and risk model to report data and application information. The lender still applies its own model, with additional cash-flow evidence if it chooses to use it.
Potential coverage Strongest where you have a sufficiently detailed and accurate borrowing history. Can provide extra insight for a thin-file or borderline applicant whose bureau history does not show the full picture.
Privacy questions Check which organisations report data and how to access or correct the file. Check who receives the account data, what analysis is created, retention periods and the withdrawal method.

How to connect safely and keep control

  1. Identify the recipient. Confirm the legal name of the lender or service asking for access and that you are on its genuine sign-in page, not an unsolicited link.
  2. Read the consent screen. Note the accounts covered, the transaction history requested, the data categories, the stated purpose and the access period.
  3. Use your bank’s authentication. Enter credentials only in the secure bank or authorised open-banking journey. An approved recipient should not ask you to disclose your online-banking password directly to it.
  4. Record the permission. Save the confirmation, expiry date and instructions for revocation so you can later prove what you agreed to.
  5. Review the result. Ask how the lender interpreted irregular income, cash transfers, gambling-related payments, shared bills or overdraft use before assuming a negative outcome reflects your credit score.
  6. Withdraw when the purpose ends. Use the service’s stated cancellation route and, where available, remove the connection through your bank’s open-banking permissions. Ask whether the recipient will delete data it no longer needs; withdrawal stops future access but may not erase information already used lawfully.

Does Equifax see your bank transactions?

Equifax’s privacy information says transaction data and analysis may be shared with the approved recipient you authorised. The exact recipient depends on the service and consent journey. The available materials therefore support a conditional answer: Equifax or an Equifax-powered service may process payment-account transactions when you authorise that connection, but this does not mean every Equifax customer automatically has bank transactions imported into a standard credit report.

Before connecting, distinguish three parties: the bank that holds the account, the open-banking provider that facilitates authentication and data transfer, and the lender or other recipient that requested the information. The consent notice should identify the parties and purpose. If it does not, stop and request clarification.

Checking and correcting your Equifax report

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) identifies Equifax, Experian and TransUnion as the three main UK consumer credit-reference agencies. You can request the information each agency holds about your financial standing free of charge, commonly by asking for a statutory credit report. Checking more than one file can reveal that a lender has supplied different information to different agencies.

What to do about an error

  1. Obtain the report showing the disputed entry and note the account name, dates, balance and reference details.
  2. Raise the dispute with the credit-reference agency that displays the information.
  3. Contact the original lender or other data supplier as well when the error originated with that organisation; ask it to investigate and correct any data it supplied.
  4. Keep copies of statements, payment confirmations and correspondence. If the issue is unresolved, follow the organisation’s complaint process and then consider the relevant escalation route explained by the ICO.

Correcting an inaccurate report can improve the information available to lenders, but it is different from adding open-banking data and does not guarantee a particular score or lending decision.

Consent is not the only legal basis for credit-reference processing

The optional permission used to connect a payment account should not be confused with the legal basis for ordinary credit-reference activity. The ICO explains that data-protection law does not always require consent when credit-reference agencies process information under another lawful basis. In practical terms, you may be able to refuse an optional open-banking connection while lenders and agencies continue permitted reporting and credit-reference processing under their existing arrangements.

UK policy changes that may affect credit-file completeness

On 25 February 2026, the Financial Conduct Authority reported a consultation proposing to designate certain credit-reference agencies and require designated lenders that share consumer-credit information with one designated agency to share it with all designated agencies. The stated aim is to close gaps and make files more complete and accurate. A consultation proposal is not the same as a rule already in force, so check the FCA’s final decision and implementation dates before relying on it.

The UK Government’s Financial Inclusion Strategy also describes continuing work by credit-reference agencies, lenders and third-sector organisations on coerced debt and joint products. It notes that any changes must avoid further detriment and be safe for victim-survivors. This policy work concerns how credit information is recorded and interpreted; it does not turn an open-banking connection into an automatic score change.

What the published adoption figures do—and do not—show

Equifax’s 2024 brochure reports several vendor-supplied figures:

  • More than 10 million UK consumers and businesses had used open banking.
  • About one-third of Equifax’s monthly open-banking API volume came from brokers and intermediaries.
  • One Equifax client example recorded a 90% opt-in rate when customers were offered an open-banking option.
  • More than 80% of consumers in one utilities-client feedback exercise said they would use open banking again.

These figures describe Equifax-reported usage or individual client exercises. They are not a government-wide study of approval rates, score changes or consumer outcomes, and they should not be read as evidence that open banking improves every applicant’s result.

Common situations and the right interpretation

“I linked my account and my score did not move.”

That is consistent with the way the cited materials describe the service. The connection supplies information for a recipient’s analysis; it is not documented as an automatic score update.

“The lender declined me after I shared my transactions.”

A decline can reflect the lender’s own model, affordability calculation, application information or risk policy. Ask the lender which factor drove the decision and whether you can request a reconsideration or explanation. Do not assume the Equifax score itself fell.

“I have little credit history. Should I share data?”

Open banking may give a lender additional evidence when bureau data is limited, as the Capital One UK example illustrates. Weigh that potential benefit against the privacy and retention terms, and share only the accounts and period the service requires.

“A transaction on my bank statement is wrong. Can I delete it from my credit report?”

A bank transaction is not automatically a credit-report entry. If a separate lender-reported account or payment status is inaccurate, dispute it with both the agency and the original supplier using the ICO process.

Bottom line for borrowers

Open banking is a consented data-sharing route, not a direct credit-score lever. It can give a lender a more detailed view of income and spending and may help some thin-file or borderline applicants, but the lender controls how that information affects its decision. Your Equifax score, your Equifax report and a lender’s internal decision are separate things. Check the permission terms before connecting, monitor the reports held by the three main UK agencies, and challenge inaccurate entries with the agency and the organisation that supplied them.
