Its forward P/E divides the same price by an estimate of future EPS. Both ratios show how much investors are paying for a particular earnings measure; neither proves that the stock is fairly valued, that Nvidia’s growth will continue, or that a forecast will come true.
Any published Nvidia multiple needs four labels: the share-price date and source, the EPS basis (GAAP or adjusted, basic or diluted), the earnings period, and the forecast provider and date for forward estimates. Without those details, a precise-looking P/E can be misleading.

What a P/E ratio actually measures
The per-share P/E formula is:
P/E = share price ÷ earnings per share (EPS)
It is a ratio, not a dollar amount. Change either input and the result changes. A rising share price increases the P/E if EPS is unchanged. Higher earnings reduce the P/E if the price does not move. Analysts therefore need to identify exactly which EPS figure they use rather than treating “Nvidia’s P/E” as one permanent number.
EPS is generally net income attributable to common shareholders divided by a share count. For diluted EPS, the denominator includes potentially dilutive securities. Nvidia says its diluted net income per share uses the weighted-average number of common and potentially dilutive shares outstanding during the period, applying the treasury-stock method in its Form 10-Q: Nvidia Form 10-Q for the quarter ended July 26, 2026.

Because a P/E embeds both market price and accounting earnings, it is best read as a description of the market’s price relative to a stated earnings period—not as a standalone buy or sell signal.
Trailing P/E and forward P/E answer different questions

“Forward” is not a single standardized horizon. Two websites can show different forward P/Es because one uses the next fiscal year and another uses the next four quarters. Their EPS definitions, adjustment policies and estimate dates can also differ.
Nvidia earnings figures you can use—and figures you should not relabel
Nvidia’s official filings provide several EPS figures, but they cover different periods:

The quarter and six-month numbers come from Nvidia’s 2026 Form 10-Q. The fiscal-year figures were announced in Nvidia’s fiscal 2026 results release.
Six-month EPS is not trailing-12-month EPS. A current share price divided by $4.85 would create a six-month-period ratio, not a conventional trailing P/E. Likewise, dividing a price by annual GAAP EPS and calling the result “forward” would be incorrect unless the annual figure is an estimate for a future year.

Nvidia also said it will include stock-based compensation expense in non-GAAP financial measures beginning in Q1 FY2027. That policy change makes it especially important not to splice older adjusted EPS with newer figures without explaining the treatment. GAAP and non-GAAP series should be kept consistent throughout a comparison.
How to calculate a defensible Nvidia P/E
- Record the price timestamp. Use the closing or intraday price you selected, the trading date, the currency and the market-price source. A multiple calculated with a price from one date and EPS from an unrelated date can move materially before publication.
- Choose the EPS period. For trailing P/E, state whether the denominator is the last four reported quarters, a fiscal year or another defined window. For forward P/E, state next fiscal year, next calendar year or next 12 months.
- Choose one accounting basis. Label the denominator GAAP or non-GAAP, and basic or diluted. Do not compare a GAAP multiple for one company with an adjusted multiple for another without explaining the difference.
- Document the EPS source. For reported results, link the relevant filing or results release. For estimates, name the consensus provider or analyst, the estimate date and any important revision.
- Divide price by EPS. Keep the units consistent. A dollar share price divided by dollar-per-share EPS produces a unitless ratio expressed as “times,” such as 30 times earnings.
- Check the denominator for unusual items. A one-off gain, temporary margin spike, acquisition cost or other unusual item can make a historical P/E look artificially low or high.
Do not derive a forward P/E from revenue guidance alone. EPS also depends on gross and operating margins, operating expenses, taxes, other income, dilution and the future share count.

It anchors the discussion to reported performance
A trailing multiple connects the current market price with earnings Nvidia has actually reported. That makes the denominator more observable than an estimate and allows readers to reproduce the calculation from a filing.
It can reveal how much the market price has outrun or lagged recent earnings
If the price rises faster than trailing EPS, the trailing P/E expands. If earnings catch up while the price stays flat, it contracts. This movement describes the relationship between price and past earnings; it does not by itself establish that the stock is cheap or expensive.
It can be distorted by timing and business inflection points
Nvidia’s results have been changing rapidly. A historical window can include quarters earned under very different demand, pricing, supply or product conditions. A trailing ratio may therefore understate the earnings power investors expect—or make a temporarily strong period look sustainable.

What Nvidia’s forward P/E can tell you
It makes price comparable with an expected earnings path
For a fast-growing company, investors may care more about prospective earnings than a distant historical period. A forward multiple shows the price relative to the selected forecast, which can help frame how much growth the market appears to be discounting.

It is only as reliable as the estimate
Forward EPS is an assumption, not a reported fact. Analysts can revise estimates when orders, product launches, supply availability, pricing, margins or regulations change. The forward P/E can therefore fall because expected EPS increased, not because the share price declined; it can rise because estimates were cut, even when the price is unchanged.
Management guidance is not a guaranteed consensus
Nvidia’s annual filing warns that forward-looking statements rely on management beliefs and assumptions and that actual results can differ materially. The filing states: “These statements involve known and unknown risks, uncertainties and other factors, which may cause our actual results, performance, time frames or achievements to be materially different from any future results, performance, time frames or achievements expressed or implied by these statements.” Read guidance as management’s outlook, then identify separately whose estimate supplies a forward P/E.
Why Nvidia’s growth context matters to a multiple
Nvidia reported $96.221 billion of revenue in Q2 FY2027, up 106% year over year. Data Center revenue was $89.023 billion, up 117%, according to the company’s Form 10-Q. Data Center therefore generated the large majority of reported quarterly revenue.
Those figures help explain why investors may accept a higher multiple than they would for a slower-growing business. They do not prove that the growth rate will persist or that any particular P/E is justified. Durability depends on demand for AI infrastructure, product transitions, supply execution, pricing, customer spending and competitive conditions.

The same filing discusses competition and information requests from regulators in multiple jurisdictions. Such factors can affect future revenue, margins, costs and the timing of sales. They belong beside a P/E analysis because a ratio cannot capture those risks by itself.

A low forward multiple can result from several different situations:
- The share price has fallen.
- Analysts expect unusually high near-term earnings that may not persist.
- The estimate excludes or treats unusual items differently from the historical series.
- The market expects slower growth, stronger competition, regulatory limits or weaker demand after the forecast period.
- The denominator uses a different fiscal horizon or accounting basis than the comparison you have in mind.
A high multiple can similarly reflect credible growth expectations—or excessive optimism. The ratio does not reveal which explanation is correct. Investors need to test the earnings assumptions, margins, capital requirements, cash generation and business risks behind the denominator.
How to compare Nvidia’s P/E with another company
Before placing two multiples in a table, align the following dimensions:

A semiconductor company’s P/E is not automatically comparable with a company in a different industry. No peer range or dated analyst forecast is established here, so a claim that Nvidia is cheap or expensive would require additional, clearly dated data.

EPS, dilution and buybacks: details that affect the denominator
Nvidia reported 24.1 billion common shares outstanding as of August 21, 2026, in its quarterly filing. That figure is useful context but does not replace the weighted-average diluted share count used to calculate period EPS. The share count used in a P/E denominator must match the EPS definition and period.
Buybacks can reduce shares over time and dividends return cash to shareholders, but neither item turns a P/E into a complete valuation. Changes in the share denominator can lift or reduce future EPS, while the market price already reflects investors’ expectations about those actions.
When comparing GAAP and adjusted results, disclose what each measure includes. The planned inclusion of stock-based compensation in Nvidia’s non-GAAP measures beginning in Q1 FY2027 means an adjusted-EPS trend crossing that policy change requires particular care.

A practical checklist before you publish or rely on a multiple
- Is the share price dated and sourced?
- Does the denominator cover a clearly named period?
- Is EPS GAAP or non-GAAP, basic or diluted?
- For a forward figure, who supplied the estimate and when?
- Are all compared companies measured on the same basis?
- Could one-off items, a changing share count or an accounting-policy change distort the result?
- Have growth assumptions and risks been examined alongside the ratio?
- Are you avoiding a buy, sell or fair-value conclusion based on P/E alone?
The bottom line for investors
Nvidia’s trailing P/E tells you what price the market is paying for a specified slice of reported earnings. Its forward P/E tells you what price the market is paying relative to a specified earnings estimate. The first is more anchored to history; the second is more sensitive to expectations and revisions. Neither one tells you whether Nvidia will meet forecasts, whether its growth is durable or what return a shareholder will earn.
Use the ratio as one comparison point in a broader analysis of earnings quality, cash generation, balance-sheet strength, capital needs, customer concentration, cyclicality, competition and regulation. State the price date, EPS basis, time horizon and forecast source every time; without that context, the number is not decision-ready.
