Microsoft has completed nine common-stock splits since its March 13, 1986 IPO. Together, those ratios turned one original share into 288 shares. The latest split in Microsoft’s official history was a 2-for-1 split that began trading at the new split-adjusted price on February 18, 2003.
A split changes the number of share units and the quoted price per share in opposite, proportional directions. It does not, by itself, increase the market value of your position, your percentage ownership of Microsoft, or the company’s operating performance. The useful investor task is therefore to track the adjusted share count, adjusted cost basis, dividends and historical prices consistently rather than treating the split count as a return record.

How the cumulative 288-share figure is calculated
A split ratio is a multiplier applied to the existing share count. A 2-for-1 split multiplies shares by 2. A 3-for-2 split multiplies shares by 1.5, because an investor receives three shares for every two held.
Microsoft’s sequence contains seven 2-for-1 splits and two 3-for-2 splits. The arithmetic is:
27 × 1.52 = 128 × 2.25 = 288.
That calculation agrees with Microsoft’s FAQ, which says one original share became 288 shares after the last split. It is a share-count conversion, not a statement that an original investment earned 288 times its value. The value would also depend on the purchase price, dividends, later market prices, reinvestment choices, fees and taxes.

Share count rises while the quoted price falls proportionally
In a 2-for-1 split, each old share becomes two new shares and the approximate market price per share is cut in half. Microsoft illustrates this with 100 shares priced at $50 each: the position is worth $5,000 before the split. Immediately afterward, the investor has approximately 200 shares at $25 each, still $5,000 before any market movement.

The same logic applies to a 3-for-2 split. An investor with 100 shares would have 150 shares after the split, while the per-share price would be divided by 1.5. If the pre-split quote were $60, the arithmetic post-split quote would be approximately $40. The $6,000 position value is unchanged at the instant of the adjustment, assuming no market movement.
Ownership percentage does not change
Every outstanding share is adjusted under the same ratio. You own more share units, but Microsoft also has proportionally more shares outstanding. Your percentage claim on the company therefore remains the same, as does your proportional claim on future dividends declared per share after the split adjustment.
The split is not an operating event
A split does not add cash to Microsoft, increase revenue, change profit margins or improve a product. Market prices can rise or fall afterward for business, economic and market reasons. The historical fact that Microsoft split nine times does not establish that any split caused a gain or that another split would predict future performance.
The 2003 split: dates, terms and stated reason
Microsoft’s board approved the ninth split on January 16, 2003. The company announcement said shareholders of record on January 27 would receive one additional common share for each share held. The split’s payable date in Microsoft’s history is February 14, 2003, while the FAQ says the stock began trading at the new split-adjusted price on February 18.

You can read the original announcement in Microsoft’s January 16, 2003 release. The board approval and record date are also recorded in Microsoft’s 2003 Form 10-Q filed with the SEC.
When asked why the stock was split, Microsoft’s FAQ says the board acted “based on a desire to make our stock more accessible to a broader range of investors.” That is Microsoft’s stated rationale. It should not be rephrased as a promise of a price increase, a prediction of returns or evidence that accessibility necessarily produced a gain.
How to read Microsoft’s historical prices correctly
Older price charts can be misleading if you do not know whether they are split-adjusted. Microsoft’s dividends and stock history page says its displayed historical prices use a split-adjusted cost basis per share. That convention makes prices from before and after the nine events comparable on the current share-unit basis.

Use adjusted prices for chart comparisons
Suppose you compare a pre-2003 quote with a recent quote. A raw historical quote may reflect the larger, pre-split denomination. A split-adjusted series converts that old quote to the equivalent number of today’s share units, preventing an apparent jump that is only a unit change. Use one consistent series rather than mixing a newspaper’s unadjusted closing price with Microsoft’s adjusted history.

Include dividends when measuring an investment result
Price return and total return are different. A price series excludes cash dividends unless they are reinvested; a total-return calculation includes them. Microsoft says its investment calculator includes both dividends and stock splits. When evaluating what an investment would have become, specify whether dividends were taken as cash or reinvested, the start and end dates, and whether the prices are split-adjusted.
Reconcile your own records
For an inherited, transferred or very old holding, list each transaction and apply the split ratios in chronological order. Your final share count should reflect the ratios that occurred while you owned the shares, not necessarily all nine events since the IPO. Compare that calculation with brokerage statements and investigate differences caused by sales, dividend reinvestment, transfers or fractional-share handling.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the split means for cost basis and taxes
Economically, the aggregate cost assigned to the position does not change merely because shares are divided. If 100 shares originally carried a $5,000 aggregate basis and a 2-for-1 split produces 200 shares, the arithmetic basis per share becomes approximately $25 while the aggregate basis remains $5,000, before any other transaction. A 3-for-2 split similarly spreads the existing aggregate basis across 1.5 times as many shares.

That arithmetic is useful for recordkeeping, but tax reporting is jurisdiction-specific. Rules can differ by country, state or province, account type, acquisition lot and treatment of fractional shares. Do not apply a universal tax conclusion to a Microsoft split; check the current guidance of your tax authority or a qualified professional in your jurisdiction before filing a return or calculating a taxable gain.

Practical checklist for an investor tracking Microsoft shares
- Identify the account and lots. Separate shares bought, received through a transfer, inherited, or acquired through dividend reinvestment.
- Apply only relevant ratios. If you owned shares after a particular split, multiply the applicable lots by 2 for a 2-for-1 event or by 1.5 for a 3-for-2 event.
- Keep aggregate basis separate from per-share basis. A split changes the denomination of each share; it does not by itself change the total amount invested.
- Check the effective trading date. For the 2003 event, distinguish the January 27 record date, February 14 payable date and February 18 date when the new split price began trading.
- Use split-adjusted history for comparisons. Confirm that the price series uses Microsoft’s adjusted cost-basis convention.
- Decide how dividends are treated. A performance comparison should state whether dividends were received in cash or reinvested and should use Microsoft’s calculator or another method that includes dividends consistently.
- Retain source documents. Keep confirmations, statements and transfer records so a broker or tax professional can trace each lot.
Does Microsoft appear likely to split again?
Microsoft’s official history checked on October 13, 2026, identifies the February 2003 2-for-1 event as its most recent split. That is a description of the company’s published record, not a forecast. A future board could authorize a split, leave the share structure unchanged, or choose another ratio; the nine-event pattern cannot establish which outcome will occur.
Investors should therefore avoid treating a high or low quoted price as a schedule for a future split. A board’s decision would be announced with its own ratio, record date, payable date and trading date. Until then, use the actual historical record and current company disclosures rather than extrapolating from the intervals between past events.
Common mistakes when interpreting Microsoft’s split history
- Calling the 288-share result a 288-fold return. It is a cumulative share-unit multiplier; it says nothing by itself about investment performance.
- Comparing raw and adjusted prices. A split-adjusted chart and an unadjusted quote can describe the same market history in different units.
- Ignoring dividends. A price-only result is not the same as a total-return result.
- Confusing dates. Record, payable and first split-price trading dates serve different purposes, especially for the 2003 event.
- Assuming the split changed ownership. The number of units changes for all holders, so the ownership percentage does not.
- Inferring a cause-and-effect return. Microsoft’s stated accessibility rationale does not prove that the split produced subsequent gains.
- Applying tax rules universally. Cost-basis arithmetic is straightforward, but reporting treatment depends on jurisdiction and circumstances.
The practical takeaway
Microsoft’s nine common-stock splits converted one IPO share into 288 shares, with the latest listed event occurring in 2003. For an investor, the essential effects are mechanical: more share units, a proportionally lower quoted price and no immediate change in the position’s total value. Accurate analysis requires split-adjusted prices, consistent dividend treatment and careful lot records. The history explains how Microsoft’s share denomination evolved; it does not promise a future split or a particular return.
