A Magnificent Seven stock can look cheap when its share price is low relative to forecast earnings, but a low price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is only a starting signal. It may reflect unusually strong growth, or investors’ doubts that current profits will last. The useful question is not “Which stock has the lowest P/E?” but “What assumptions about growth, reinvestment, business risk and earnings quality are embedded in this multiple?”
What makes a Magnificent Seven stock look cheap?
A stock looks inexpensive on a P/E basis when investors pay relatively few dollars for each dollar of a company’s earnings. For example, a forward P/E of 20 means the market price equals 20 times the earnings analysts expect over the next 12 months. A lower multiple than its peers can attract attention, especially when the company is still reporting rapid profit growth.

That comparison is meaningful only if the earnings measure, date and estimate source are identical. A trailing P/E uses earnings already reported, while a forward P/E uses an estimate. Forward figures can change whenever share prices move or analysts revise forecasts. A low forward multiple can therefore indicate an opportunity, but it can also signal that the market expects slower growth, higher risk or a decline in profits.

The Magnificent Seven are seven separate companies—Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta Platforms and Tesla—with different products, customers, cost structures and competitive threats. As Vanguard chief investment officer Rodney Comegys put it, “They share a label, not a business model.” Treating the group as one type of technology stock can make a low P/E appear more informative than it is.

What the October 1, 2026 comparison actually shows
WisdomTree’s comparison dated October 1, 2026 uses forward 12-month P/E ratios and median analyst estimates. Historical earnings growth is annualized over a trailing three-year period where five years was unavailable. Estimated long-term growth is annualized from median analyst estimates for the next three years. These are dated estimates, not live prices or guarantees.
| Company | Forward 12-month P/E | Trailing earnings growth | Estimated long-term earnings growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nvidia | 19.3x | 94.2% | 51.5% |
| Apple | 35.9x | 11.2% | 9.8% |
| Microsoft | 26.2x | 16.9% | 20.8% |
| Alphabet | 25.5x | 23.8% | 2.4% |
| Amazon | 26.8x | 34.9% | -0.6% |
| Meta Platforms | 23.5x | 14.9% | 18.2% |
| Tesla | 181.6x | 9.0% | 28.5% |
| Magnificent Seven | 26.1x | 24.3% | 17.7% |
| S&P 500 | 20.1x | 18.1% | 16.2% |
The group’s 26.1x forward P/E was above the S&P 500’s 20.1x. Nvidia had the lowest multiple in this snapshot despite the highest trailing and estimated long-term growth rates. Tesla’s 181.6x multiple was dramatically higher than the other members, while Alphabet’s 25.5x multiple sat near the group but came with only 2.4% estimated long-term earnings growth. Those contrasts show why a ranking by P/E alone is inadequate. They do not prove that Nvidia is undervalued, Tesla overvalued or any other member fairly priced.
How to read a P/E ratio correctly
Trailing P/E
A trailing P/E divides the current share price by earnings from a completed period, commonly the last four quarters. It uses known results, but those results may include a temporary boom, a one-time charge or a cyclical peak. If profits are unusually high, the trailing P/E can look artificially low.
Forward P/E
A forward P/E divides the share price by expected future earnings. It is useful for a company whose recent results do not represent its next year, but the denominator is an estimate. WisdomTree’s figures are based on median analyst forecasts, so they should be labeled as such rather than presented as company-guaranteed earnings.

The date matters
P/E is a moving ratio. A falling share price lowers the numerator immediately, while earnings estimates may adjust more slowly. Conversely, a rally can make a stock look expensive before analysts raise forecasts. Always attach the measurement date and forecast horizon to a multiple; “the stock trades at 20 times earnings” is incomplete without them.
What P/E ratios miss
1. Growth and the reliability of the denominator
P/E does not tell you how quickly earnings are growing. A 30x multiple may be reasonable if profits can compound rapidly, while a 12x multiple can be expensive if earnings are about to fall. The October comparison pairs each multiple with historical and estimated growth for that reason.
Growth estimates are not promises. Analyst forecasts can be wrong, and company filings caution that forward-looking expectations are subject to risks and uncertainties. Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K states: “These forward-looking statements are based on current expectations and assumptions that are subject to risks and uncertainties, which could cause our actual results to differ materially from those reflected in these forward-looking statements.” A low P/E based on optimistic earnings is not safer merely because the arithmetic looks favorable.
2. Different business models and risk exposures
The seven companies span online marketplaces, cloud services, consumer devices, digital advertising, semiconductors, social platforms and automobile manufacturing. Revenue concentration, customer behavior, regulation, supply chains and competitive dynamics differ across those businesses.

Vanguard analyst Erich Pingel notes that “Differences in business models also mean differences in risk-factor exposures, which helps explain why their stock prices do not move entirely in lockstep.” A single group-average P/E hides those differences. Compare a company with recurring software and cloud revenue using the same framework as a hardware manufacturer only after examining what drives each company’s earnings.
3. Capital required to produce those earnings
Net income does not show how much cash a company must spend to maintain or expand its operations. Capital expenditures can absorb cash even while accounting earnings rise. The relevant follow-up measures include operating cash flow, free cash flow, capital expenditures and the amount of investment needed to support projected growth.
Meta Platforms illustrates the issue. Its 2025 filing reported $69.69 billion of purchases of property and equipment, primarily servers, data centers and network infrastructure. The company anticipated approximately $115 billion to $135 billion of capital expenditures in 2026. Those are Meta-specific reported amounts, not an estimate for the entire group, but they demonstrate why earnings and reinvestment must be considered together.

Two companies can post the same earnings growth while having very different quality of growth. One may be adding durable subscription or cloud revenue; another may be benefiting from a temporary product cycle, cost cuts or unusually favorable pricing. Segment disclosures help you determine whether the fastest-growing source is large enough to change the overall business and whether weaker segments are offsetting it.

Ask how diversified the revenue base is, which segment supplies most of the profit, how concentrated the customer base is and whether a single product or market accounts for the recent earnings surge. Group membership is not evidence of a common moat.
5. Expectations already embedded in the price
Price reflects what investors expect, not merely what a company earned last quarter. A high P/E can reflect confidence in future earnings, while a low P/E can reflect concerns about competition, regulation, cyclicality or execution. P/E reports the relationship between price and earnings at one horizon; it does not explain whether the market’s expectations will prove accurate.

In the October 1 snapshot, Nvidia’s 19.3x forward P/E was below the S&P 500’s 20.1x and far below several group members. Its trailing earnings growth was 94.2%, and estimated long-term growth was 51.5%. That combination may make the stock look inexpensive relative to its growth, but it also raises a crucial question: how much of that growth is already required to justify the price, and how sensitive are forecasts to a slowdown?

Alphabet’s 25.5x multiple was higher than Nvidia’s, yet its estimated long-term growth was only 2.4%. That does not establish overvaluation; estimates can change, and Alphabet may have assets or cash-generation characteristics not captured by a simple growth comparison. It does show why the same P/E threshold cannot be applied mechanically.

Amazon’s 26.8x multiple accompanied 34.9% trailing growth but a negative 0.6% estimated long-term growth rate in the table. The contrast warns against extrapolating a recent earnings rebound indefinitely. Tesla’s 181.6x multiple implies that investors are paying for substantial future earnings expansion; a forecast of 28.5% long-term growth may help explain the premium, but does not guarantee that growth will materialize.
A practical framework for investigating a “cheap” member
- Define the multiple. Record whether it is trailing or forward, the exact date, the forecast period and the estimate source. Do not compare a live trailing P/E with a dated forward P/E.
- Compare growth with the multiple. Review several years of earnings history and the estimated long-term rate. Investigate whether growth comes from revenue, margins, buybacks or one-time items.
- Test estimate sensitivity. Consider what happens if revenue growth slows, margins normalize or analysts reduce forecasts. A low multiple can disappear when the denominator falls.
- Examine cash and reinvestment. Read operating cash flow, free cash flow and capital-expenditure disclosures. Determine whether the company must spend heavily to preserve its competitive position.
- Break down the business. Identify major segments, geographic exposure, customer concentration and the sources of profit. Compare risks within the company, not just the headline group.
- Read the risk disclosures. Look for competition, regulation, supply constraints, dependence on key partners, litigation and other factors that could make forecasts unreliable.
- Set a valuation range rather than a ranking. Use more than one scenario for earnings and a reasonable range of exit multiples. The result is an assumption-dependent estimate, not a guaranteed fair value.
When other valuation measures are needed
P/E works best when earnings are positive, reasonably stable and comparable across companies. It becomes less informative when a company is heavily reinvesting, has volatile margins or reports significant noncash charges. In those cases, investors commonly examine price-to-sales, enterprise value to operating earnings, price-to-free-cash-flow and segment-level economics alongside P/E. Each measure has its own limitations and should be tied to the company’s business model.
Cash-flow analysis is particularly important when capital spending is large. A company can report strong net income while free cash flow is constrained by data-center, factory or network investment. Conversely, temporarily low free cash flow may reflect an investment cycle that could support future earnings. The interpretation depends on the purpose and expected return of the spending.
How to avoid common P/E mistakes
- Mixing dates: A multiple from October 1, 2026 is not a live quote and may become stale as prices and forecasts change.
- Mixing earnings bases: Do not compare one company’s trailing P/E with another’s forward P/E.
- Ignoring negative or unusual earnings: A distorted denominator can make P/E meaningless or misleading.
- Extrapolating one strong year: High historical growth may reflect a rebound, a product cycle or a low prior-year base.
- Assuming the group is homogeneous: The seven companies have distinct end users, revenue sources and risk factors.
- Treating estimates as facts: Median analyst forecasts are consensus expectations, not guarantees.
- Calling a low multiple a buy signal: A P/E comparison is not an independently calculated intrinsic-value analysis.
What investors can reasonably conclude
The October 1, 2026 data show a Magnificent Seven group trading at 26.1x forward earnings versus 20.1x for the S&P 500, with wide differences among members. Those figures are useful for framing expectations, not for selecting a winner. Nvidia’s low multiple and high forecast growth deserve investigation; Tesla’s high multiple demands confidence in substantial future growth; Alphabet and Amazon demonstrate how a moderate multiple can coexist with modest or declining estimated long-term growth.
A stock deserves to be called cheap only after its earnings forecast, growth durability, cash needs, business mix and risks have been tested against a valuation assumption you can defend. P/E is the opening calculation. The investment judgment comes from understanding what the denominator can realistically become and what the company must spend, risk or change to get there.
