Common examples include origination, documentation and late fees; credit and disability insurance are generally optional, while non-filing insurance may apply to a secured loan. An upfront charge is not automatically a scam: the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says a legitimate lender may require an application or appraisal fee before considering an application. The danger sign is paying for a promise—especially “guaranteed approval”—before the lender has assessed your credit and application.
Use the written disclosure and loan agreement, not the fee’s name, to decide whether a charge is acceptable. Confirm the amount, purpose, timing, whether it is optional, and whether it reduces your cash proceeds or increases what you repay. U.S. rules vary by state and by loan product.

What fees can legitimately appear on a personal loan?
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) lists several possible charges for personal installment loans. A lender does not necessarily charge all of them, and the name alone does not establish whether a fee is permitted or worthwhile. Your offer and contract control.

| Fee or charge | What it generally covers | What to verify before accepting |
|---|---|---|
| Origination fee | A charge for making or arranging the loan. | Whether it is taken from the amount disbursed or added to the repayment balance, and how it affects the APR and total cost. |
| Documentation fee | Paperwork or document processing. | The exact amount, the work it covers, and when it becomes due. |
| Credit insurance | Coverage associated with a borrower’s credit obligations. | It is generally optional; ask what it covers, its price, and how to decline it. |
| Disability insurance | Potential payment protection if a qualifying disability affects your ability to pay. | It is generally optional and has policy definitions, exclusions and eligibility terms. |
| Non-filing insurance | Insurance that may be used when a loan is secured by collateral and a security interest is not filed. | That the loan is secured, why the charge applies, and whether another collateral arrangement is available. |
| Late fee | A charge triggered by a payment received after the contract’s stated deadline or grace period. | The amount, trigger, grace period and any state-law limits in the agreement. |

How to tell what a fee really costs
Check when the charge is collected
A fee can be collected at different points: when you apply, when you accept the offer, at funding, or during repayment. “Upfront” describes timing, not legality. A clearly disclosed application or appraisal charge paid before a lender considers an application is different from money demanded to release a supposedly guaranteed loan.
Find out whether the fee reduces your proceeds
Suppose an approved loan has a $10,000 face amount and a $500 origination fee. If the fee is deducted at funding, you receive $9,500 while the contract may still calculate payments from the stated loan amount. If it is added to the balance, you may receive the full $10,000 but repay more. Ask the lender to show both the cash you will receive and the total amount you will repay in writing. Do not assume a fee is harmless because it is deducted rather than billed separately.
Confirm whether an insurance charge is optional
The CFPB describes credit insurance and disability insurance as generally optional. A representative should be able to explain how to decline them without losing the loan, and the agreement should identify the coverage and cost. Do not accept a statement that an optional policy is mandatory unless the written terms and applicable law support that claim.

Compare the complete cost, not one line item
Compare the annual percentage rate (APR), payment amount and schedule, total repayment, amount actually disbursed, and every fee. A loan with no origination fee can still cost more if its interest rate or repayment period is higher. Conversely, a disclosed origination fee may be less expensive overall than a no-fee offer with a substantially higher APR.
When an upfront application or appraisal fee can be legitimate
The FTC says legitimate lenders can require an application or appraisal fee before considering an application. That early charge alone does not prove fraud. A legitimate process should still provide a real business identity, a written explanation of the fee, contact information, and terms that do not promise an outcome the lender has not evaluated.
Ask these questions before paying:
- What service does the fee pay for?
- Is it charged before underwriting, after approval, or only if I accept?
- Is it refundable under any circumstances?
- Will paying it guarantee approval, a particular rate, or a particular loan amount?
- Is the fee listed in the application disclosures and final agreement?
- What payment method and receipt will document the transaction?
An appraisal charge is more commonly associated with a loan secured by property or another asset. If a lender uses that term for an unsecured personal loan, request a specific explanation of what is being appraised and why.

Upfront charges that should make you walk away
Payment in exchange for guaranteed credit
The FTC warns that a lender demanding “processing,” “insurance” or “paperwork” money before granting a promised loan may be running an advance-fee scam. Its consumer guidance states: “Legitimate lenders will not promise you a loan or other credit without knowing your credit history, but demand you pay them first.” Read What To Know About Advance-Fee Loans.
No legitimate lender can truthfully guarantee approval before reviewing your credit history and application. Be especially cautious when a caller or website says your credit is irrelevant, approval is certain, or a fee must be paid immediately to “unlock” funds.
Pressure, secrecy or unusual payment methods
Urgency, refusal to provide documents, or instructions to send money by wire, gift card, cryptocurrency or a person-to-person payment service are serious warning signs. A request to pay a fee to an individual rather than an identifiable lender is also inconsistent with a transparent lending process. Do not surrender online-banking credentials or send a copy of your identity documents until you have independently verified the lender.

Fees that keep changing
A scammer may request one payment, then invent another condition—such as a second insurance charge—after you pay. Stop communicating and do not send additional money. A legitimate offer should state the complete fee list and the circumstances under which each charge applies.

A safe process before you pay or sign
- Identify the lender. Record the legal name, physical address, phone number and website. Do not rely only on a name supplied by a caller or text message.
- Request the full written offer. Obtain the rate, APR, term, payment schedule, net proceeds, total repayment and every fee before sending money or accepting funds.
- Ask the six fee questions. For each charge, ask the amount, reason, due date, whether it is optional, whether it is refundable, and whether it is deducted from proceeds or added to repayment.
- Read the agreement. Check that the contract matches the advertisement and the representative’s explanation. Look for late-fee triggers, insurance elections, collateral provisions and cancellation terms.
- Verify state registration. When unsure, contact your state attorney general or banking or financial-services regulator to ask whether the lender is registered or licensed where required.
- Search independently. Search the lender’s name and phone number with words such as “complaint” or “scam,” as the FTC advises. Use contact details you find independently, not only those in an unsolicited message.
- Pay only for a documented service. Never pay for guaranteed approval. If a fee is legitimate, obtain a receipt and retain the disclosure, agreement and communications.
What to do if you already paid a suspicious fee
Stop sending money and preserve evidence: emails, text messages, caller IDs, payment receipts, bank records, contracts and the address of any website involved. Contact the bank, card issuer or payment service immediately and ask what reversal or fraud options remain. Change credentials if you shared account information and monitor accounts for unauthorized activity.
Report an advance-fee loan scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. You can also notify your state attorney general or financial-services regulator. Reporting cannot guarantee recovery, but prompt notice may help limit further loss.
Do not apply mortgage fee rules to personal loans
Mortgage disclosures follow rules that do not automatically apply to unsecured personal loans. The CFPB’s Loan Estimate guidance says a mortgage lender may request a credit-report fee before issuing a Loan Estimate, with other fees possible after the applicant indicates an intent to proceed. That is a mortgage-specific explanation, not a universal rule for personal-loan applications. See How much does it cost to receive a Loan Estimate? for that limited context.
Do not use the mortgage page’s statement that credit-report fees are typically less than $30 as a benchmark for personal loans. Personal-loan fees depend on the product, lender, contract and applicable state requirements.
Questions to resolve before accepting any offer
- Is the lender evaluating my application, or is it selling a guaranteed result?
- Can I see the complete fee schedule and agreement before making a payment?
- What cash will reach my account after all deductions?
- What will I repay over the full term, including optional products I can decline?
- What happens if I pay late, cancel, or decide not to proceed?
- Which state regulator can confirm this lender’s authority to operate?
A fee is legitimate only in the context of a transparent, documented loan transaction. A disclosed charge for a stated service may be acceptable; money demanded for guaranteed credit is the warning sign to avoid.
