World ID is a digital credential for proving to a participating app that you are a real, unique human. It is not a government identity card and it does not let every service see your iris image. In the Orb-based process, a custom device photographs your eyes and face, checks that you are a live person and tests whether you have already been verified. World says the resulting credential lets you answer later “prove I am human” requests with a zero-knowledge proof and a nullifier, instead of handing over the original biometric images.
You manage the credential in the World App. A website or app must independently choose to accept World ID, so having a credential does not make it universally usable. There is also a separate route using an NFC-enabled government identity document; that can establish attributes such as age, but it is not the same as an iris-based uniqueness check.

What World ID is—and what it is not
World ID is a reusable proof-of-human credential. Its purpose is to help a participating service distinguish one real person from automated accounts, duplicate accounts or other claims that do not represent a unique human. The service asks for a specific claim, and the World App produces a cryptographic proof that can be checked without revealing the underlying iris photograph.

The credential is held in the World App after verification. World ID therefore sits between a biometric enrollment process and an ordinary login: the Orb is used for the initial Proof of Human process, while later interactions can use proofs generated by the app.

- It is a credential, not a universal login. Each website or app has to integrate World ID and decide what claims to accept.
- It is not the same as legal identity. Orb verification is designed to establish human uniqueness, while the document-based option can establish selected document attributes.
- It is not a retina scan. The relevant biometric is the iris, along with face images used in the verification process.
- It is not a promise that every interaction is anonymous. World describes zero-knowledge proofs and nullifiers as privacy protections, but a relying service can still collect information through its own account, payment or activity systems.
How the Orb verifies that you are a unique human
The Orb is the custom hardware used for World’s Orb-based Proof of Human. Its cameras capture images of your eyes and face. The system checks liveness—whether the subject is a live person rather than a presentation of a photograph or another substitute—and evaluates uniqueness against its verification process.
1. Start in the World App
You open the World App and begin a verification flow. The app directs you through the steps required for an Orb appointment or location. Orb locations, supported regions and eligibility can change, so the current in-app instructions are the practical authority for where the process is available.
2. Let the Orb capture eye and face images
At the Orb, cameras capture the images needed for the checks. World describes the eye and face images as inputs for uniqueness verification and, in its privacy explanation, for Face Auth. The device and its software assess whether the person in front of it is live and whether the biometric information appears to represent a previously unverified human.

The iris information is cryptographically transformed into an iris-derived code rather than being used as a photograph that a service can browse. World describes processing on the Orb and encrypted fragmentation through multiparty computation. In practical terms, the design is intended to avoid making one plainly readable biometric record the object that applications receive.
4. Receive the credential in the app
After the verification flow, the World ID credential is stored in your World App. The app can use that credential when an integrated service requests a proof. The credential is not itself a screenshot or a document that you send to every website; it is used to generate a cryptographic response to a particular request.

5. The application checks the proof
A relying application receives a zero-knowledge proof and a nullifier. It can verify the requested claim through World’s infrastructure or its documented developer API. The proof is designed to demonstrate the claim without disclosing the source iris image to that application.
What a zero-knowledge proof and nullifier do
A zero-knowledge proof lets the World App demonstrate that a statement is true without exposing all the information behind it. For a World ID request, the statement might be that the requester has a valid Proof of Human credential. The application checks the proof rather than receiving the biometric source images.

The nullifier is a cryptographic value associated with the particular application or action context. It allows a service to detect repeated use where its policy requires one proof per person, without giving that service the iris image. World’s whitepaper describes the app-generated proof and nullifier as part of the verification design.
This separation matters because a service that receives only the proof should not be able to reconstruct the iris photograph from it. World also says its zero-knowledge design is intended to prevent actions from being linked to iris images or linked together through World ID data. That is World’s stated privacy design, not a guarantee that every other piece of data collected by a participating service is unlinked.
Does World ID store your iris scan?
World’s FAQ says that Orb verification data, iris photos and iris codes are not revealed when a person uses World ID. Its privacy explanation says the Orb process uses eye and face images for uniqueness and Face Auth, while zero-knowledge proofs separate later actions from those images.

The important distinction is between the images collected during verification, the transformed biometric information used by the system, the credential in the World App and the proof delivered to an application. A participating application is intended to receive the proof and nullifier it needs—not the original eye or face photographs.
These are World’s stated data-handling and deletion claims. They should be read as descriptions of the system’s policy and architecture, not as a reason to assume that every privacy question is settled for every jurisdiction, software version or future policy change. Before enrolling, review the current World privacy information and the permissions shown in the app.
Orb verification compared with the phone-and-document option
World’s Help Center documents a separate credential path based on an NFC-enabled government identity document. Your phone’s NFC reader reads the document, and the resulting credential can prove attributes such as age. This route answers a different question from Orb verification: a document can attest to an attribute recorded on an identity document, while the Orb process is designed to establish that the claimant is a live, unique human.

You should not treat the document route as an Orb substitute for every use case. If a service specifically requires Proof of Human uniqueness, an age or identity-document credential may not meet its requirement. Conversely, if a service needs an age attribute, an Orb-based uniqueness proof may not answer that question.
Where you can use World ID
World ID works only where a website or app has implemented it. The official developer API supports verification of World ID proofs and credentials for application actions, and the World whitepaper describes the proof-and-nullifier model. A service may request a particular credential, impose its own eligibility rules or decline to accept World ID altogether.

What a typical use looks like
- Choose World ID at a participating site or app.
- Approve the request in the World App and review what claim is being requested.
- Let the app generate the zero-knowledge proof and relevant nullifier.
- Return the proof to the service for verification through its World ID integration.
- Continue only after checking that the service is asking for the claim you expected.
Because integrations and supported credentials can change, check the service’s current instructions rather than assuming that any site displaying a World-related reference accepts every World ID method.
What information a service can still learn
World ID’s proof can reduce the need to share biometric source data, but it does not make the interaction information-free. The participating service can know that a proof was presented, the claim it requested and the outcome of verification. It may also associate the interaction with an account, device, IP address, transaction, message or other information it collects under its own terms.
The nullifier is intended to help a service enforce its own anti-duplication rule without exposing the iris image. Whether two different services can connect your activity depends on the protocol context and on information those services collect independently. World’s claim is that its zero-knowledge design prevents actions from being linked through World ID data; that should not be expanded into a promise that no real-world activity can ever be correlated.

- Orb access varies. You need an available Orb and a supported location. Availability is not universal and can change.
- A compatible phone is required for app-based use. The credential and proof flow take place in the World App; the document route additionally requires NFC support.
- Acceptance is optional for services. A World ID credential cannot force an app to accept it.
- Different credentials prove different things. Do not use a document-based age credential as evidence of Orb-based uniqueness, or vice versa.
- Rules can change. Supported credentials, API versions, Orb locations and regulatory treatment are volatile. Check current official information before enrolling or building a financial or identity-sensitive workflow around it.
Questions to ask before verifying or using a proof
Before you visit an Orb or approve a request in the World App, identify the exact claim the service wants. “Prove I am human,” “prove I am over a stated age,” and “prove details from a government document” are different requests.
- Is the service asking for Orb Proof of Human or an NFC document credential?
- Will the service receive only a proof and nullifier, or is it also asking for account, contact or payment information?
- Can you see the service’s privacy terms and the purpose of the verification?
- Is the service genuinely participating, and is the request appearing inside the expected World App flow?
- Do your region, phone and document meet the current requirements?
If the requested claim does not match the service’s stated purpose, stop before approving it. A cryptographic proof can limit biometric disclosure, but it cannot correct a misleading or overbroad request from the relying application.

For developers: what an integration must handle
A developer integrating World ID must request the credential or proof appropriate to the application’s action, send the resulting proof for verification and enforce the application’s own policy for acceptance. The documented API and World’s protocol materials describe the verification flow; implementation details such as API versions and supported credential types should be checked against the current documentation.
The application should tell users what it is checking and avoid requesting a stronger or different credential than the action requires. It should also treat a successful proof as one signal in an access decision, not as a substitute for authorization, fraud controls, payment checks or its own account-security measures.
Bottom line for users
World ID is a reusable way to prove a defined claim—most notably that you are a live, unique human—to an application that supports it. Orb verification captures eye and face images, performs liveness and uniqueness checks, transforms iris information and places a credential in the World App. Later, the app sends a zero-knowledge proof and nullifier rather than the source iris image. World also offers an NFC government-document credential for attributes such as age, but that path should be evaluated separately because it establishes a different kind of claim.
