VantageScore and FICO are separate families of credit-scoring models. Each model analyzes information in a consumer credit file and converts it into a number intended to predict credit risk. The number you see in a personal-finance app is not automatically the number a lender will use. The bureau supplying the data, the model family and version, the type of credit application, and the date the underlying file was updated can all change the result.
That is why one person can have several legitimate credit scores at the same time. The useful comparison is not an unqualified “VantageScore versus FICO” number; it is the exact model, bureau file, score date, and lending purpose behind each number.

What a credit score is—and what it is not
A credit score is a calculation made from information in a credit report. The nationwide consumer reporting agencies maintain the underlying files. A scoring company applies a model’s rules to the data in a file and produces a score for a particular purpose.

The company develops scoring models; the reporting agencies hold the files and can provide the data used to calculate a score. This distinction matters when you see a discrepancy: the score itself may be calculated correctly from a file that differs from another bureau’s file, or it may have been refreshed on a different date.

What is VantageScore?
VantageScore is a family of credit-scoring models created for use with credit-report data. Its models are separate from FICO models, even when they use the same numerical scale. The word “VantageScore” therefore does not identify one permanent, universal score. A display should be read with its model name and version—for example, VantageScore 3.0 or VantageScore 5.0.
VantageScore 3.0’s published range
VantageScore’s 2025 consumer guide describes VantageScore 3.0 as ranging from 300 to 850. That range is a property of that model, not a rule that every VantageScore product or every credit score must use the same scale.

VantageScore 5.0 availability
In a July 8, 2026 announcement, VantageScore said its VantageScore 5.0 model was available through Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. The company describes 5.0 as designed for unsecured and auto-loan originations and trained on post-pandemic consumer-loan data.
That announcement also reported, in VantageScore’s own comparison with VantageScore 3.0, “up to 9%” additional predictive lift for unsecured and auto-loan originations and said 96% of scores remained within a 40-point range across all three bureaus. Those are vendor-reported claims about the company’s model and comparison; they are not an independent, contemporary head-to-head finding that VantageScore 5.0 beats FICO.

FICO is another family of credit-scoring models. Like VantageScore, FICO models turn credit-file information into a risk score, but the model rules, version, bureau data, and intended use can differ. A consumer may see one FICO score while a creditor purchases a different FICO version or an industry-specific score.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s analysis of consumer- and creditor-purchased scores explains the structural reasons that scores vary by provider, model version, bureau, and target industry. That report was published in September 2012, so its detailed market lineup and estimates should be treated as historical context rather than a current catalog of every FICO product.
No single current formula comparison establishes that one family is universally more accurate, more generous, or more widely used for every kind of borrowing. The lender chooses the score that fits its decision.
VantageScore versus FICO: the comparison that actually matters
| Comparison point | What you can reliably conclude | What you should not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Model family | VantageScore and FICO are distinct model families, each with multiple versions. | “My VantageScore” and “my FICO score” refer to one fixed, interchangeable number. |
| Version | The version name can change how the same file is scored. | All lenders use the newest version or the version shown in an app. |
| Bureau file | Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion can contain different information, producing different scores. | One bureau’s score proves another bureau’s score is wrong. |
| Data date | Balances, payments, and reported accounts can change between refreshes. | A score viewed today reflects every update a lender might receive today. |
| Lending purpose | A lender can select a model for a particular product, such as an auto loan or unsecured credit. | One score is used for every mortgage, card, auto, or personal-loan decision. |
| Numerical scale | VantageScore 3.0 uses 300–850; many FICO displays also use a broad 300–850-style range. | A matching number on the same-looking scale means the models reached the same risk assessment. |
Why your VantageScore and FICO score can differ
The bureaus may have different files
Creditors do not necessarily report every account or update to all three nationwide bureaus at the same time. One file might show a recently reported balance while another has not received it. An account, payment status, credit limit, or public-record item can therefore be present in one file and absent from another.

The models use different rules
Even when two models receive identical data, they can weight or interpret that data differently. The available sources establish that model families and versions vary; they do not establish a current, complete factor-by-factor formula that would let you predict every VantageScore-to-FICO difference.

The scores may have different refresh dates
A monitoring service may refresh periodically. A lender can obtain a score when it pulls a report for an application. If a balance or payment was reported between those events, the two displays can legitimately diverge.
The score may be built for a different product
Some scoring products are designed for a particular lending use. A score intended for auto lending need not match a general-purpose score, even for the same consumer and the same day. The exact model a particular lender uses is not established by the score shown in a consumer service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare two scores without drawing the wrong conclusion
- Write down the complete model name. Record whether the display says VantageScore or FICO and note the version, such as VantageScore 3.0. If the version is missing, treat the comparison as incomplete.
- Identify the bureau. Note whether the score was calculated from Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion data. A score without a bureau name leaves out a major part of the explanation.
- Record the score date and report date. Check when the score was generated and when the underlying file was last refreshed. A one-day difference can matter when a lender has just received a new balance or payment update.
- Check the intended use. Look for a description such as general credit, auto lending, or another industry purpose. Do not treat an app’s label as proof that a lender will use that exact product.
- Compare the underlying reports. VantageScore advises consumers to request and examine reports from each nationwide bureau. Look for differences in account balances, limits, payment history, open and closed accounts, inquiries, and reported personal information.
- Investigate the file before blaming the score. A difference alone does not prove an error. If a report contains inaccurate information, follow the relevant reporting agency’s dispute process and keep documentation of what you challenged.
What a score difference means when you are applying for credit
A modest spread between two consumer-facing scores is not automatically a warning sign. First determine whether the numbers came from the same bureau, model version, and date. If they did not, the difference may simply reflect the inputs and rules each product used.

Ask the lender which score category it considers relevant only if the lender is willing to explain its process; sources here do not establish the exact model any particular lender uses. A lender may also combine a score with income, debt obligations, loan-to-value, employment, and its own policy rules, so a score is one input rather than an approval promise.
Common misunderstandings
“The higher number must be the correct one.”
Not necessarily. Two valid models can produce different numbers from different files or dates. Confirm the model, bureau, and date before deciding that one is wrong.
“A 300–850 scale makes VantageScore and FICO interchangeable.”
No. A scale describes the numerical boundaries, not the model’s risk calculations. VantageScore 3.0’s 300–850 range and a similar-looking FICO display do not make equal numbers equivalent.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“The score in my monitoring app is the lender’s score.”
It may not be. Consumer services can display a different model, bureau, or refresh date from the product a lender purchases.
“The newest VantageScore is proven to beat FICO.”
VantageScore’s 2026 release makes performance claims for VantageScore 5.0 compared with VantageScore 3.0. Those statements are attributed vendor claims, not independent evidence of superiority over FICO.
Bottom line for consumers
VantageScore and FICO are competing model families, not competing versions of one universal score. To understand a number, identify its model and version, bureau file, score date, and lending purpose. VantageScore 3.0 publishes a 300–850 scale and category labels, while VantageScore says its 5.0 model became available from all three nationwide bureaus in July 2026. Neither fact tells you which score a particular lender will use. The practical response to differing numbers is to compare the underlying reports and dates, correct inaccurate information, and avoid treating any single consumer-facing score as a guaranteed underwriting result.
