Instead of buying one company, you buy shares in a fund that generally owns the securities in that index: the 100 largest domestic and international nonfinancial companies listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market by market capitalization.
QQQ is often described as a technology fund because technology companies have historically represented a large portion of the Nasdaq-100. It is broader than that label suggests, however. The index also includes companies in consumer services, healthcare and other sectors. Invesco reported 102 fund holdings on October 14, 2026; that number and each holding’s weight can change, so a current holdings file is the authority for a purchase-date snapshot.

What QQQ is
An exchange-traded fund (ETF) is a pooled portfolio whose shares trade on a stock exchange during market hours. QQQ’s ticker is QQQ, and its formal name is Invesco QQQ Trust, Series 1. The fund is passively managed: its job is to follow the Nasdaq-100 Index rather than have a manager select stocks in an attempt to beat that benchmark.

What the Nasdaq-100 Index selects
The Nasdaq-100 is a rules-based index, not a list of every company traded on Nasdaq. Its framework covers the 100 largest domestic and international nonfinancial companies listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, measured by market capitalization. Financial-company eligibility is therefore a defining difference between this index and a broad-market index that includes banks, insurers or other financial businesses.
“Largest” refers to the index’s selection methodology, not to a permanent ranking. Market values change every trading day, companies can be added or removed during scheduled reviews, and corporate events can alter the securities represented in the portfolio. The index’s name describes the selection framework; it does not guarantee that a fund will show exactly 100 line items at every moment.
Why the index can look different from a pure sector fund
The Nasdaq-100 is commonly associated with large-cap growth and innovation because many of its constituents operate in technology-related industries. Its rules, however, are company- and listing-based rather than “technology only.” Consumer services, healthcare and other growth-oriented sectors are also represented. The result is concentrated exposure to large Nasdaq-listed businesses, but not a single-industry portfolio.

What QQQ holds
Invesco says the fund generally consists of the stocks in the Nasdaq-100. The exact names, share classes and portfolio weights are time-sensitive. Invesco’s product information listed 102 holdings as of October 14, 2026. That dated count should not be treated as a permanent number or as a promise that every future holdings file will contain exactly 102 securities.
The index methodology explains why the fund can have a different line-item count from the index’s “100” company-selection framework. The two figures describe different things: 100 is the index’s stated selection framework, while 102 was the fund’s reported holdings count on a particular date. Do not infer a fixed constituent list, fixed number of securities or fixed percentage allocation from either figure.
Why holdings and weights move
- Market movements: If one constituent’s share price rises faster than others, its percentage of QQQ can increase even when the fund does not trade.
- Index reviews: Scheduled rebalancing and reconstitution can change constituent weights or membership.
- Corporate actions: Mergers, spin-offs, stock splits, tender offers and similar events can require index and fund adjustments.
- Fund operations: The ETF may hold cash or temporary positions while implementing index changes, so a daily file is more precise than a historical description.
For a current list of companies or percentages, use the latest holdings disclosure on Invesco’s QQQ product page. A top-ten list copied from an older article can be stale even if the fund’s name and ticker have not changed.
How often QQQ changes
Invesco states that the fund and the index are rebalanced quarterly and reconstituted annually. These terms describe two related but different processes.

Quarterly rebalancing
Rebalancing adjusts portfolio weights according to the index rules. A company can remain in the index while its target percentage changes. Because prices also move between review dates, the fund’s market-value mix will fluctuate continuously rather than waiting for the next scheduled rebalance.
Annual reconstitution
Reconstitution is the annual review of index membership. Companies that no longer meet the methodology’s requirements can leave, while eligible companies can enter. The review is rules-based; it is not a manager’s discretionary forecast about which stocks will perform best.
Daily transparency
Most ETFs disclose their holdings daily, and QQQ follows that transparency practice. Daily disclosure lets you check the current constituents and weights instead of relying on a quarterly fact sheet or a third-party summary. Always note the “as of” date attached to the file: a disclosure is a snapshot, not a guarantee for the next trading session.
QQQ fund facts and cost
| Item | QQQ detail | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Fund | Invesco QQQ Trust, Series 1 | Passively managed ETF |
| Ticker | QQQ | Trades on Nasdaq/NMS |
| Benchmark | Nasdaq-100 Index | 100 largest domestic and international nonfinancial Nasdaq-listed companies by market capitalization, under the index rules |
| Inception | March 10, 1999 | Launch date listed by Invesco |
| Holdings | 102 | Invesco-reported count as of October 14, 2026; not a permanent count |
| Net expense ratio | 0.18% | Current figure listed by Invesco; ratios can change |
| Total expense ratio | 0.18% | Current figure listed by Invesco |
| Identifiers | CUSIP 46090E103; ISIN US46090E1038 | Identifiers for the fund share class |
At a 0.18% annual expense ratio, Invesco illustrates the cost as $18 per year for each $10,000 invested, assuming the ratio does not change. This amount is reflected in the fund’s assets rather than billed as a separate invoice to you, so it reduces returns relative to the portfolio’s gross performance.

The expense ratio does not include brokerage commissions, the bid-ask spread you may pay when trading, taxes, or any advisory fee charged by your platform. Those costs depend on your account, order and jurisdiction. A limit order can help you control the price you are willing to accept, but it does not eliminate spreads or market risk.
Is QQQ just a technology ETF?
No. QQQ tracks a cross-sector index, although technology exposure can be substantial. The index and fund include technology, consumer services, healthcare and other growth-oriented sectors. Calling QQQ “technology only” can lead to an inaccurate risk assessment: a technology company, an online consumer business and a healthcare company may respond differently to interest rates, regulation, competition and economic conditions.
QQQ is still more concentrated than a total-market fund. Its eligibility rules exclude financial companies and focus on the largest Nasdaq-listed nonfinancial businesses. That creates a distinctive portfolio rather than a complete representation of the global stock market. Check the current sector breakdown and constituent weights before deciding how much of your overall allocation it should represent.

How to check exactly what QQQ holds
Because holdings change, use a dated official disclosure when you need an answer for a specific day. Follow this process:

- Comfortable Non-Slip Grip:The ergonomic pen barrel has a soft rubberized coating for a comfortable, non-slip grip, so you won't get fatigued even after long hours of writing.
- Open Invesco’s current QQQ product page and locate the holdings or portfolio section.
- Record the disclosure’s “as of” date before copying any company name or weight.
- Review the complete list, not only the largest positions, if you are checking diversification or an overlap with another investment.
- Look at the sector and weight columns together. A fund can hold many companies while still having a large share in its biggest positions.
- Repeat the check after a scheduled index review, a major corporate action or a material change in your portfolio.
This approach avoids presenting a historical top-ten list as if it were a current promise. It also distinguishes a constituent’s presence from its influence: a small holding may count as one security but contribute little to the fund’s daily movement.
What exposure QQQ gives an investor
QQQ packages large-cap, Nasdaq-listed, nonfinancial-company exposure into one tradable security. That can simplify implementation for an investor who specifically wants the Nasdaq-100 methodology instead of selecting individual stocks. The fund also spreads company-specific risk across many holdings, so the outcome does not depend on one issuer alone.
That diversification has limits. The portfolio is restricted by its index rules, can be dominated by its largest constituents, and may be sensitive to the same economic forces affecting growth-oriented companies. A fall in a heavily weighted constituent can affect QQQ more than a fall in a small holding. The ETF does not remove equity-market risk, valuation risk, currency exposure from international businesses, or the possibility of losing principal.
Questions to answer before buying
- Do you want the Nasdaq-100 specifically, or a broader market that includes financial companies and smaller businesses?
- Are you comfortable with concentration in large Nasdaq-listed growth businesses and the possibility that sector weights change over time?
- Will QQQ complement your existing funds, or duplicate many of their largest positions?
- Can you tolerate daily price swings and a loss of principal?
- Have you checked your brokerage’s trading costs, tax treatment and order-entry rules?
How to compare QQQ with another ETF
A meaningful comparison starts with the benchmark, not the ticker symbol. Use the same date for each fund’s facts and examine these dimensions:
| Comparison point | What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Benchmark methodology | Nasdaq-100 or another index; market-cap, equal-weight or another approach | Methodology determines which companies qualify and how they are weighted |
| Financial-company eligibility | Whether banks, insurers and other financial businesses can enter | Changes the sectors and economic exposures represented |
| Sector concentration | Current sector percentages and largest positions | Reveals whether “diversified” holdings are still concentrated in a few industries or issuers |
| Number of holdings | Full securities count with each date attached | A larger count does not automatically mean broader economic exposure |
| Expense ratio | Net and total expense ratios, including any stated waiver | Fees reduce returns and must be compared on a like-for-like basis |
| Trading characteristics | Exchange, spreads and typical liquidity | Affects the cost and ease of entering or exiting a position |
| Portfolio role | Broad diversification versus concentrated large-cap growth exposure | The right choice depends on the allocation you need, not on a recent performance impression |
Do not claim that QQQ will outperform another ETF without a dated, comparable performance source and a clear explanation of the measurement period, fees and reinvestment assumptions.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating QQQ as a stock: It is an ETF holding a basket of securities. Its price is one tradable share, but its risks come from the underlying portfolio and market mechanics.
- Assuming “100” means exactly 100 fund lines: The index framework and the fund’s dated holdings count are not interchangeable.
- Using an undated holdings list: Membership and weights change with reviews, corporate actions and market movements.
- Calling it a pure technology fund: Consumer services, healthcare and other sectors are included.
- Confusing the expense ratio with total investing cost: Commissions, spreads, taxes and advisory fees are separate.
- Ignoring overlap: A second fund may own many of the same large constituents, leaving your combined portfolio more concentrated than expected.
- Reading a fee as a guarantee: The 0.18% figure is Invesco’s current listed net and total ratio; it can change, so verify the current disclosure.
Bottom line
QQQ is a long-running, passively managed ETF that tracks a specific rules-based universe: the largest nonfinancial companies listed on Nasdaq. It offers convenient access to that basket, but it is not a complete-market fund and not a technology-only fund. The most reliable way to understand what you own is to pair the index definition with Invesco’s latest dated holdings disclosure, then evaluate the 0.18% expense ratio, concentration and overlap against your overall plan.
