What Is the Difference Between Absolute Return, CAGR, and XIRR?

Absolute return is the total percentage gain or loss between a starting value and an ending value. CAGR is the constant annual compound rate that connects those two values over time. XIRR is an annualized, money-weighted return that uses the amount and date of every contribution, withdrawal, and ending value.

Use absolute return for the total point-to-point change, CAGR for a single lump-sum investment held over a known period, and XIRR when cash flows occur on different dates. They answer different questions, so the percentages are not interchangeable.

Which return measure should you use?

Measure Question it answers Best fit Important limitation
Absolute return How much did the investment gain or lose in total? One beginning investment and one ending value over a stated period It does not annualize the result or account for the timing of additional cash flows. Zerodha
CAGR What constant annual compound rate links the beginning and ending values? A lump sum with a clear start date, end date, beginning value, and ending value It smooths the path and does not treat interim contributions or withdrawals as separately dated flows. Microsoft Support
XIRR What annualized rate makes all dated cash flows balance to a present value of zero? Recurring investments, irregular top-ups, withdrawals, and a final portfolio value It depends on accurate dates and cash-flow signs, and reflects the investor’s timing rather than only the underlying asset’s path. Microsoft Support

The practical decision is therefore based on three things: whether there was one investment or several, whether you need a total or annualized figure, and whether the timing of each cash flow matters.

Absolute return: the total change from start to finish

For a single investment, absolute return is calculated as:

Absolute return = (ending value − starting value) ÷ starting value × 100%

A starting value of ₹275,000 that becomes ₹325,000 has a gain of ₹50,000. Dividing ₹50,000 by ₹275,000 gives an 18.18% absolute return. This is the result in a dated example from Zerodha, based on an investment made on 28 May 2018 and valued on 10 December 2018; it is an illustration, not a general market or fund statistic. Zerodha

Absolute return deliberately ignores the length of the holding period. A 20% gain in six months and a 20% gain in five years are both 20% in absolute terms, even though the annual growth rates are very different. Always show the dates beside an absolute-return percentage.

When absolute return is useful

  • Checking the total gain or loss on a buy-and-hold position.
  • Explaining how much an account changed between two valuation dates.
  • Comparing investments that were held for the same length of time and had the same cash-flow pattern.

What it cannot tell you

Absolute return does not annualize performance, so it cannot by itself tell you whether a return was fast or slow. It also does not account for when additional money entered or left the investment. With several contributions, a simple gain divided by total contributions can describe the overall change in contributed capital, but it is not a substitute for a dated, money-weighted calculation.

CAGR: a smoothed annual compound rate

CAGR answers a hypothetical question: what single annual compound rate would turn the beginning value into the ending value over the elapsed period? The formula is:

CAGR = (ending value ÷ beginning value)(1 ÷ number of years) − 1

The number of years must match the period being measured. If a period is expressed in days, divide by the day-count convention used by your calculation. In Zerodha’s example, ₹275,000 grew to ₹325,000 over 425 days. Using a 365-day exponent produces a 15.43% CAGR. That figure is an illustrative calculation, not a forecast or an expected return. CAGR is called “smoothed” because it suppresses the year-by-year path. An investment could have fallen sharply, recovered, and then finished higher; CAGR reports only the constant rate that reproduces the endpoints. It does not mean the investment actually earned that rate every year.

When CAGR is appropriate

  • A single lump sum was invested at the beginning and left invested until the ending date.
  • You need to compare growth over different multi-year periods using an annualized rate.
  • There were no material interim contributions, withdrawals, or distributions that should be treated as separate cash flows.

Microsoft describes CAGR as a way to calculate a smoothed annual growth rate and cautions that rates should be compared over the same measurement period and on consistent endpoint definitions. Microsoft Support

Why CAGR can mislead for a savings plan

If you invest ₹10,000 every month, the first payment may be invested for years while the latest payment may have been invested for only a few days. Treating the entire total contribution as if it were invested on the first day overstates the time that later payments were exposed. CAGR can still be computed from total contributions and the final value, but the result answers a simplified lump-sum question rather than the return earned on the actual dated cash flows.

XIRR: annualized return for dated cash flows

XIRR is designed for a sequence of irregularly timed cash flows. It solves for the annual rate that makes the net present value of those flows equal to zero. Microsoft states that the rate is the interest rate corresponding to XNPV = 0. Microsoft Support

From an investor’s viewpoint, money paid into the investment is normally entered as a negative amount, while withdrawals and the ending portfolio value are positive amounts. Every amount must be paired with its actual date. The series needs at least one positive and one negative value.

In Excel, the syntax is XIRR(values, dates, [guess]). Excel uses a 365-day year for the annualization. The optional guess is a starting estimate for the iteration; it can help in unusual cases but is not normally required. Microsoft Support

A software example

Microsoft’s documentation uses cash flows of −10,000, +2,750, +4,250, +3,250, and +2,750 on dates running from 1 January 2008 to 1 April 2009. Excel returns 37.34% XIRR for that set. It is a function example, not an investment benchmark. Microsoft Support

Why XIRR is the usual choice for recurring investments

XIRR gives each contribution its own time in the market. A contribution made before a strong rise has more influence on the investor’s result than one made after that rise. That makes XIRR a money-weighted measure: it describes the return actually experienced by that cash-flow pattern. It does not isolate a fund manager’s skill or provide a pure market-performance measure.

Zerodha illustrates this with monthly ₹10,000 contributions from December 2017 through January 2019 and a ₹180,000 ending value. The example reports 54.96% XIRR. The percentage depends on the dates and amounts in that illustration and should not be read as an expected SIP return. Zerodha

Why one portfolio can show three different percentages

Imagine that an investor contributes the same amount at the start of every month and later records one ending value. Absolute return can show the total change relative to the contributed capital, but it ignores that each payment had a different holding period. CAGR treats the beginning and ending values as if they were connected by one lump sum. XIRR uses every payment date, so it reflects the actual exposure of each installment.

An investor-awareness infographic from HSBC Asset Management (India) shows how labels can diverge in an illustrative three-year SIP scenario: 25% absolute return, 7.72% CAGR, and 14.98% XIRR. Those figures belong to the document’s example, are intended for distribution in India, and are not representative fund-performance figures. HSBC Asset Management (India)

The different results are not a calculation error. Each measure applies a different definition of “return” to the same account.

How to calculate each measure in a spreadsheet

Absolute return for one investment

  1. Put the beginning value in one cell and the ending value in another.
  2. Subtract the beginning value from the ending value.
  3. Divide that difference by the beginning value and format the result as a percentage.
  4. Display the start and end dates beside the percentage so the holding period is visible.

For example, if the start value is in B2 and the end value is in C2, use =(C2-B2)/B2.

CAGR between two dates

  1. Record the beginning value and ending value.
  2. Calculate elapsed years consistently. For a day-based calculation, divide elapsed days by 365 when that is the convention you intend to use.
  3. Apply the CAGR formula: =(Ending/Beginning)^(1/Years)-1.
  4. Compare CAGR figures only when the endpoint definitions, currency treatment, and measurement periods are consistent.

Microsoft’s Excel guidance presents CAGR as a smoothed annualized calculation rather than a sequence of actual annual returns. Microsoft Support

XIRR for contributions and withdrawals

  1. Create one column for cash-flow amounts and a second column for the corresponding dates.
  2. Enter contributions as negative values from the investor’s perspective.
  3. Enter withdrawals and the ending portfolio value as positive values.
  4. Check that every amount has a date and that the dates are valid spreadsheet dates.
  5. Use =XIRR(values_range, dates_range), or add a third argument such as ,0.1 when you need to supply a starting guess.

Do not put a positive contribution and a negative contribution into the same investor-perspective series merely because the account statement uses a different sign convention. Choose one perspective and apply it consistently.

Common XIRR errors

  • Wrong sign: If all values are positive or all are negative, there is no investment equation for XIRR to solve. Include at least one value of each sign.
  • Mismatched ranges: The number of dates must equal the number of cash-flow values, and each row must describe the same transaction.
  • Incorrect dates: A date entered as text, a duplicated date copied accidentally, or a date in the wrong year can materially change the answer.
  • No convergence: Microsoft says XIRR iterates toward a solution and may return an error if it cannot find one within 100 tries. Check the signs and dates first; in an unusual case, try a reasonable starting guess. Microsoft Support

Short holding periods and annualization

XIRR is annualized even when the investment lasted only a few days. Annualizing a short result can make a modest gain look extreme because the calculation projects the observed rate across a full year.

The GIPS Standards Handbook for Firms states, in its investment-performance reporting context, that “Returns for periods of less than one year MUST NOT be annualized.” Its example converts a 34.41% annualized XIRR over 29 days into a 2.38% non-annualized return. GIPS Standards Handbook for Firms

This is a rule for the GIPS reporting context, not a universal prohibition on every consumer calculator displaying an annualized rate. If you publish or compare a sub-year result, state whether it is annualized and identify the reporting convention being used.

How to interpret the numbers responsibly

Define the ending value

State whether the ending value includes cash distributions, fees, taxes, or other cash flows. There is no single treatment that applies to every account or jurisdiction; the important requirement is to use the same definition when comparing results.

Keep the investor and investment questions separate

XIRR is tied to the investor’s cash-flow timing. Two people holding the same fund can have different XIRRs because they contributed on different dates. CAGR from a fund’s beginning and ending values is a compact endpoint description, not a measure of the return earned by every investor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not compare unlike periods

An absolute return over six months should not be ranked directly against a CAGR over five years. Even two CAGRs are not meaningfully comparable if one includes fees and distributions while the other does not, or if their start and end dates differ materially.

Label examples as examples

The rupee-denominated figures from Zerodha are mutual-fund and SIP illustrations. The HSBC figures are from India-specific investor education material. Microsoft’s 37.34% result is an Excel documentation example. None is a promise of future performance.

A practical decision checklist

  • One deposit, one final value, and you only need the total change: report absolute return and include the dates.
  • One lump sum held for a known number of years: report CAGR to express the endpoint growth as an annual compound rate.
  • Regular investments, irregular top-ups, withdrawals, or transfers: report XIRR using every dated cash flow.
  • Very short measurement period: show the non-annualized change as well as any annualized XIRR, and identify the convention.
  • Comparing results: verify that currency, fees, taxes, distributions, dates, and cash-flow signs are defined consistently.

The right measure is the one whose assumptions match the question. Absolute return describes total change, CAGR summarizes a two-point path as a constant annual compound rate, and XIRR measures the annualized result of actual dated money flows.
