Schwab’s Charley (often called “Charlie”) is a generative-AI assistant being introduced to eligible U.S. retail clients through Schwab.com and the Schwab Mobile App. It can answer questions about accounts and markets, point clients to Schwab tools, retrieve account information after authentication, and complete a limited set of routine service actions. It is not a replacement for investment judgment, and Schwab warns that its answers may be inaccurate or incomplete.
What Schwab’s Charley assistant is
Charles Schwab announced Charley on September 30, 2026. The assistant is designed as a conversational entry point to Schwab information, digital tools, resources and selected account-service functions. It appears through Schwab’s existing chat experience rather than as a separate brokerage account or standalone investing product.

Charley uses large language models that Schwab says are grounded in Schwab data, expertise, security controls and safeguards. In practical terms, that means a client can type a question in ordinary language instead of searching menus or help pages. Depending on the question and the client’s permissions, Charley can explain a process, direct the user to the relevant screen, retrieve account information or help complete an eligible change.
The name matters when searching for it: Schwab’s official spelling is Charley, although many readers may refer to it as “Charlie.”

Who can access Charley and where
The rollout begins in October 2026 for eligible U.S. retail clients on Schwab.com and in the Schwab Mobile App. Schwab says access will expand to additional client groups over time, so two Schwab customers may see different availability during the rollout.
- Web: Sign in to Schwab.com and use the existing chat entry point when Charley is enabled for your account.
- Mobile: Open the Schwab Mobile App, sign in and use the in-app assistant entry point. Schwab identifies mobile alerts and some other actions as app-based capabilities.
- Eligibility: Availability depends on Schwab’s rollout stage and client eligibility, not merely on having a Schwab login.
If the assistant cannot resolve an issue, Schwab’s platform provides a route to “Chat with a representative.” Human support remains part of the design rather than an emergency workaround.
What investors can ask Charley
Charley’s useful range is broader than a simple FAQ bot. It combines explanations, account lookup, navigation and a defined set of authenticated actions.
Recommended Free Tools
Transfers, payments and account service
You can ask for information and next steps about transfers and payments, account opening and maintenance, and common service problems. Charley may explain what a process involves or take you to the appropriate Schwab workflow. The exact steps and available actions can depend on account type and eligibility.
Trading and market questions
Schwab says Charley can provide quotes and market information, explain next steps for trading and account actions, manage watchlists and alerts, and help clients reach Schwab research tools. These capabilities are useful for finding information quickly, but they do not establish that Charley is an autonomous trading system.

- Compact for travelling
At launch, Schwab’s published capability list does not say that Charley can independently decide to buy or sell securities or place a trade without the client using Schwab’s normal trading flow. Treat a response about a trade as information or navigation unless the authenticated Schwab interface clearly presents and confirms a transaction.
Balances, transactions and positions
After you sign in, Charley can answer questions about balances, recent transactions and positions. It can also help locate statements, tax documents and account-maintenance information. Those answers are tied to the account context available in Schwab’s systems; they are not a public-market chatbot’s guesses about your finances.

Charley can add or update watchlists. In the Schwab Mobile App, Schwab also says users can set or manage alerts. Review symbols, price conditions, delivery methods and frequency before saving an alert, particularly if you follow several accounts or securities with similar names.
Account changes Charley can complete
Schwab lists several actions that can be completed through the assistant when the account and security are eligible:
- Add or update a watchlist.
- Enroll eligible securities in dividend reinvestment.
- Add beneficiaries.
- Update contact information.
- Add or update a trusted contact when eligible.
- Set or manage alerts in the Schwab Mobile App.
“Eligible” is important. The assistant may refuse an action, require a conventional Schwab page, or route you to a representative when an account, security, registration or regulatory condition prevents the change. A conversational confirmation is not proof that a change was saved; Schwab tells users to confirm that account changes were completed as intended.

What Charley cannot safely replace
It is not a fiduciary decision-maker
Charley is a service and information assistant. Schwab’s launch materials do not present it as a portfolio manager, fiduciary or substitute for personalized investment advice. A response can summarize information or explain a Schwab process, but you remain responsible for deciding whether an investment, allocation or transaction fits your objectives, time horizon, tax situation and risk tolerance.
It is not a guarantee of accurate answers
Schwab’s disclosure states: “Charley may provide inaccurate or incomplete results.” The company instructs users to verify information through the links and materials it provides before relying on an answer. That warning applies even when the response sounds confident or reflects details from your account.
It is not proof that an action succeeded
For a beneficiary, trusted-contact, dividend-reinvestment, contact-information or alert change, check the resulting Schwab confirmation and the relevant account settings. If the status is unclear, stop before repeating the request and contact Schwab support. Duplicate changes can create confusion, especially when a request affects several accounts.
How to use Charley responsibly
- Sign in through Schwab.com or the Schwab Mobile App. Do not enter account details into an imitation chatbot reached through an unsolicited message or search advertisement.
- Ask one specific question at a time. “Show my latest statement” or “How do I add a beneficiary?” is easier to verify than a broad request such as “Fix my finances.”
- Check the account and security context. If you have multiple Schwab accounts, confirm which account, registration and security the response concerns.
- Open the supporting Schwab page or document. Compare dates, balances, transaction descriptions, eligibility rules and tax-document details with the underlying record.
- Review every proposed change before submitting it. Confirm names, contact details, beneficiary percentages, reinvestment elections and alert settings.
- Verify completion afterward. Look for an on-screen confirmation and recheck the account settings or activity history.
- Escalate consequential or unclear matters. Use the path to “Chat with a representative” or another Schwab support channel when the answer is incomplete, the action is unavailable or the decision has material financial consequences.
Privacy, monitoring and data handling
Schwab says interactions with Charley may be recorded and monitored by Schwab and third-party service providers for quality assurance and service improvement. It also says third-party AI providers process inputs as needed to provide the service.
That disclosure has practical implications:
- Do not paste information that is unrelated to the Schwab task, such as another person’s full identity details or private data from an outside account.
- Assume that messages may be retained or reviewed under the service’s disclosures rather than treated as an informal, private conversation.
- Use the authenticated Schwab interface and confirm that you are operating in the intended account before discussing balances, transactions or account changes.
- For a sensitive issue, ask a Schwab representative what information is required instead of volunteering extra personal details.
Charley versus Schwab Portfolio Insights
Portfolio Insights is a separate Schwab capability, not another name for Charley. Schwab launched Portfolio Insights on May 5, 2026 to explain portfolio performance and market activity.

| Capability | Charley | Portfolio Insights |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Conversational help across Schwab information, account service, market questions and selected actions. | AI-generated explanations of portfolio performance and market activity. |
| Coverage | Transfers, payments, trading and account-action questions, balances, transactions, positions, statements, tax documents, watchlists, alerts and maintenance. | Summaries for up to five holdings with the biggest movement, related market and industry news for relevant S&P 500 holdings, and Schwab Center for Financial Research commentary. |
| Account actions | Can complete selected authenticated actions when eligible, such as beneficiary or contact updates and dividend-reinvestment enrollment. | Described as an information feature; no equivalent account-service action list is stated. |
| Advice status | Service and information assistant; Schwab warns results may be inaccurate or incomplete. | Schwab describes it as providing information, not investment advice. |
Use Charley when you need to locate information, understand a Schwab process or handle an eligible service task. Use Portfolio Insights when you want an automated explanation of recent portfolio and market movements. Neither description supports treating an AI summary as a personalized investment recommendation.
Can Charley make trades?
Charley can answer trading questions, provide quotes and market information, and point you to Schwab’s trading tools. Schwab’s published launch list does not include autonomous trade execution. Therefore, do not assume that a conversational answer has placed an order, changed an order or accepted a trading instruction.
Before any transaction, use Schwab’s standard order screen to review the security, side, quantity, order type, duration, account and estimated costs. Confirm the order through Schwab’s normal process and check the resulting order status. If Charley’s answer conflicts with the order screen or a security’s official documents, rely on the underlying Schwab record and seek human assistance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Charley giving investment advice?
Charley can supply information about markets, holdings, Schwab research resources and portfolio-related questions. That is different from individualized investment advice. The launch description does not promise that Charley will determine an appropriate security, allocation or strategy for your circumstances.
For a consequential decision, separate three steps: use Charley to gather or locate information, verify the facts in Schwab’s underlying materials, and make the decision using your own plan or qualified human advice. Tax, retirement, concentrated-position and beneficiary decisions can have effects that a short conversational answer will not capture.

What Schwab’s investor surveys show—and do not show
Schwab’s 2026 surveys indicate strong interest in AI-assisted investing, but they are not performance tests of Charley.
| Survey | Finding | Who was surveyed |
|---|---|---|
| September 21–25, 2026 | 65% said AI can either help execute routine tasks or play a meaningful role in investing when paired with human expertise. | More than 500 Schwab clients and prospects with at least $10,000 in retail assets; online survey. |
| January 20–27, 2026 | More than 60% were interested in using AI; nearly 70% supported routine-task uses or investing uses paired with human expertise. | Nearly 1,000 Schwab clients with at least $2,000 in retail assets; online survey. |
These figures measure stated interest and attitudes. Schwab has not published an independent Charley accuracy rate, investment-return result or trading-performance statistic. Survey percentages should not be read as evidence that the assistant improves returns or prevents mistakes.
When to use a representative instead
Switch to human help when any of the following applies:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- The assistant gives conflicting answers or cannot show the underlying Schwab source.
- A requested account change is missing, appears incomplete or affects multiple registrations.
- You are considering a trade, rollover, tax-sensitive transaction or large allocation change.
- You suspect fraud, an unauthorized transaction or an account-security problem.
- You need an explanation tailored to circumstances Charley cannot see, such as outside assets, household goals or legal documents.
Schwab explicitly provides a path to a representative when additional assistance is needed. Using that route is appropriate, not a failure of the tool.
Bottom line for investors
Charley is best understood as a conversational layer over Schwab’s existing digital services. It can save time locating balances, transactions, statements, tax documents, quotes and research tools, and it can complete a limited group of authenticated maintenance tasks. Its October 2026 rollout is still expanding, so availability varies by eligible U.S. retail client.
Use it for routine information and navigation, verify every answer and account change, and do not treat it as an autonomous trader or personalized adviser. Schwab’s own warning—that Charley may be inaccurate or incomplete—should guide how much trust you place in any response.
