What Is Rupee-Cost Averaging, and How Does It Work During a Downturn?

Rupee-cost averaging is the purchase pattern created when you invest a fixed rupee amount at regular intervals. When a mutual fund’s net asset value (NAV) falls, that fixed contribution buys more units; when the NAV rises, it buys fewer. This can lower the average price paid for the units accumulated over time, but it does not guarantee a profit, prevent losses, or make a declining investment safe.

What rupee-cost averaging means

Rupee-cost averaging describes an arithmetic outcome, not a separate investment product. You commit the same amount of money on a schedule, while the investment’s price changes from one purchase date to the next. Because the amount is fixed, the number of units purchased varies.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • At a lower NAV, the same rupee contribution buys more units.
  • At a higher NAV, the contribution buys fewer units.
  • Across multiple purchases, the total cost is spread over different NAVs rather than committed at one price.

In India, a Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) is a common mutual-fund facility used to make these periodic investments. The SIP is the payment arrangement; rupee-cost averaging is the purchase effect that may result from it. An SIP can therefore produce rupee-cost averaging, but the terms are not interchangeable.

SEBI describes the mechanism this way: investing a fixed amount at regular intervals means an investor buys more units when the price is low and fewer when the price is high. That statement explains unit arithmetic only. It is not a forecast of returns.

How the calculation works

For each instalment, divide the fixed contribution by that day’s NAV:

Units purchased = contribution amount ÷ NAV

After several instalments, calculate the average purchase cost by dividing total contributions by total units acquired:

Average purchase cost per unit = total amount invested ÷ total units held

These calculations do not include a prediction about the fund’s future NAV. Your holding’s current value is determined by the later NAV multiplied by the units you own, less any applicable costs or taxes when you sell.

Purchase Contribution NAV Units bought
First instalment ₹1,000 ₹20 50
Second instalment ₹1,000 ₹10 100
Total ₹2,000 — 150

The average purchase cost is ₹2,000 divided by 150 units, or ₹13.33 per unit. The second instalment bought twice as many units because the NAV was half the first instalment’s NAV.

₹13.33 is an average cost, not a guaranteed selling price. If the NAV later falls below ₹13.33, the investment can still show a loss. If it rises above that level, the holding may be worth more before charges and taxes. The example is an illustration from AMFI, not a market statistic or a return expectation.

What happens during a market downturn

Each falling NAV buys more units

Suppose your scheduled contribution remains unchanged while a fund’s NAV declines over several months. Every instalment purchases a larger number of units than it would have purchased at the earlier, higher NAV. If the NAV later recovers, those additional units participate in the recovery.

This is why investors often describe a continuing SIP as “buying through” a downturn. The investor is not timing the lowest point; the fixed schedule automatically purchases at whatever NAV applies on each instalment date.

The market value can still decline substantially

Rupee-cost averaging does not put a floor under the NAV. While prices are falling, the market value of units already held is falling too. The extra units bought at lower prices may reduce the average purchase cost, but they do not erase losses on earlier purchases or ensure that a recovery will occur.

AMFI’s investor guidance states that rupee-cost averaging “does not assure profit, nor does it protect one against investment losses in declining markets.” That warning applies even when the number of units in the account is increasing.

The result depends on what happens afterward

The usefulness of a lower average cost can be assessed only against subsequent NAVs and the investment’s underlying assets. A fund that continues to decline, fails to recover, or is unsuitable for your objective can remain a poor investment despite a lower calculated average cost.

What rupee-cost averaging does not do

  • It does not guarantee returns. No purchase schedule can promise a positive outcome.
  • It does not prevent losses. Your units can be worth less than the amount invested.
  • It does not identify the bottom. A scheduled purchase may occur before prices fall further.
  • It does not repair a bad fund choice. Repeated purchases in an unsuitable asset can increase exposure to the wrong risk.
  • It does not remove market-wide risk. Broad economic and market shocks affect diversified portfolios as well as individual securities.
  • It does not prove that SIPs beat lump-sum investing. The outcome depends on the path of prices, the timing of available cash, and the investment selected.

SIP and rupee-cost averaging: the distinction

An SIP is an operational arrangement: a specified amount is debited at a chosen frequency and invested in a selected mutual-fund scheme, subject to that scheme’s terms. Rupee-cost averaging is the resulting pattern of buying different numbers of units at different NAVs.

You can invest periodically without using an automated SIP, and an SIP may not create a meaningful averaging benefit if the NAV barely changes or if contributions are stopped after a short period. The facility also does not alter the fund’s mandate, asset allocation, fees, liquidity rules, or risk level.

Should you continue an SIP in a downturn?

There is no universal instruction to continue, stop, increase, or reduce contributions. The decision should follow the purpose of the money and the risk of the underlying fund rather than the emotion of a particular market day.

1. Check when you need the money

SEBI’s risk guidance distinguishes short-term needs from long-term goals. Money required soon generally should not be exposed to investments whose value can fluctuate sharply, including equity-oriented assets. A long-term goal may have more time to withstand volatility, but a long horizon does not guarantee recovery.

2. Test your capacity and willingness to tolerate a decline

Capacity is whether your finances can absorb a fall without forcing a sale. Willingness is whether you can remain invested without panic. If an emergency, job loss, debt payment, or near-term expense would require selling, a volatile fund may not match the role assigned to it.

3. Re-examine the fund and asset class

Review whether the scheme’s asset class, diversification, concentration, and stated objective still fit your goal. Averaging into a broad, appropriately diversified fund is a different decision from averaging into a highly concentrated or speculative investment. Diversification can mitigate some risks, but it cannot guarantee against loss.

4. Confirm that the contribution is genuinely affordable

A fixed contribution should come from recurring surplus income after essential expenses, insurance needs, and suitable emergency reserves. Borrowing to maintain an SIP or investing money needed for bills changes the risk of the decision; the averaging arithmetic does not make that cash available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Use advice appropriate to your situation

If the choice involves a major goal, a large portfolio change, or uncertainty about asset allocation, consider speaking with a SEBI-registered investment adviser. Personal advice should account for your complete financial position, not only the current NAV.

SIP versus lump-sum investing

An SIP spreads new contributions across time. A lump sum puts already available cash into the market at one or more selected dates. Neither approach is a guaranteed winner, and the available evidence does not establish a universal rule that one always outperforms the other.

Question Periodic SIP contributions Lump-sum investment
Where does the money come from? Usually recurring income arriving over time Cash already available to invest
Timing exposure Purchases occur at multiple NAVs A larger amount is exposed at the selected investment date
What happens if prices fall immediately? Later instalments buy more units, provided contributions continue The entire initial amount can show a loss until prices recover
Main practical benefit Automates disciplined investing from income Invests available capital without leaving it uninvested
What determines suitability? Goal horizon, cash-flow stability, risk tolerance, and fund choice The same factors, plus the need to decide how quickly to deploy existing cash

The relevant comparison is not simply “which has the lower average cost.” Consider when the money is needed, how much volatility you can withstand, whether the fund matches the goal, and whether the cash is arriving monthly or is already in your account.

Risk controls that averaging cannot replace

SEBI defines market risk as the possibility of losses caused by forces affecting markets and the economy, including changing prices. Market-wide volatility cannot be diversified away completely. You can, however, make the overall plan more resilient by matching investments to goals and using suitable diversification and asset allocation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep short-term spending needs in assets whose volatility is appropriate for that horizon.
  • Spread long-term exposure across suitable asset classes rather than relying on one narrow theme or security.
  • Review the fund’s objective and portfolio concentration when your goal or circumstances change.
  • Do not treat a temporary NAV decline as proof that a fund is cheap or that a rebound is certain.
  • Rebalance according to a pre-decided plan instead of reacting to headlines, if your asset-allocation strategy calls for it.

A practical downturn review

  1. Write down the goal and date. State the amount needed and when it will be needed.
  2. Identify the source of each instalment. Separate recurring surplus income from money that may be needed for emergencies or near-term expenses.
  3. Read the scheme information. Check asset class, objective, diversification, charges, liquidity provisions, and stated risks.
  4. Stress-test a further fall. Ask whether you could continue the plan without selling if the NAV declined materially again.
  5. Decide based on suitability. Continue only if the contribution, horizon, and fund remain appropriate; changing the amount or stopping may also be reasonable when circumstances have changed.
  6. Document the decision. Record the reason and review date so that future changes are not driven solely by a single volatile session.

Why the monthly SIP figure is not a performance measure

AMFI reported ₹32,297 crore collected through SIPs in August 2026. This is a monthly industry contribution figure for that reporting month. It is not a return, an investor-count measure, evidence that SIPs outperform lump-sum investing, or proof that every SIP is suitable. Monthly totals can change as contribution patterns and market conditions change.

Key takeaways

  • Rupee-cost averaging results from investing a fixed amount at regular intervals while NAVs vary.
  • A lower NAV buys more units for the same contribution, which can reduce the average purchase cost across instalments.
  • The holding can still lose value, potentially for a long period; averaging does not assure profit or protect against losses.
  • An SIP is a facility for periodic investing, not a guarantee and not a substitute for choosing an appropriate fund.
  • Decisions during a downturn should be anchored to goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, cash-flow needs, diversification, and the risks of the underlying investment.
