Its main selling point is a lower monthly cost, but the tradeoff is that you generally pay for three, six, or 12 months of service upfront instead of receiving a traditional monthly postpaid bill.
Mint can be a good deal for a single line if T-Mobile coverage is reliable in the places you use your phone and you do not regularly consume large amounts of data. The advertised $15-per-month promotion is attractive, but it applies only to the introductory term, taxes and fees are extra, and renewal pricing can be much higher.
What is Mint Mobile?
Mint Mobile is a mobile virtual network operator, or MVNO. Unlike T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T, Mint does not operate its own nationwide cellular network. It buys access to T-Mobile’s network and sells service directly through its website and app.
T-Mobile completed its acquisition of Mint Mobile’s parent company, Ka’ena Corporation, on May 1, 2024. Mint remains a separately marketed consumer brand, but its network experience is based on T-Mobile coverage, including access to 5G where available.

Mint plans are prepaid and do not require a long-term contract. There is no early-termination fee, but you normally pay for the selected plan term before service begins. That makes Mint different from a postpaid carrier, where you typically pay after each month of service.
How much does Mint Mobile cost?
Mint’s current new-customer promotion advertises any plan for $15 per month. The actual promotional payment is made upfront: $45 for three months, $90 for six months, or $180 for 12 months, before taxes and fees. The offer applies to the initial term, not automatically to renewals.
| Plan | Promotional price | Regular price after the introductory term |
|---|---|---|
| 6GB per month | $15 per month | $15–$25 per month |
| 17GB per month | $15 per month | $20–$35 per month |
| 23GB per month | $15 per month | $25–$45 per month |
| Unlimited | $15 per month | $30–$40 per month |
The regular price depends on how long a term you select at renewal:
| Plan | 3-month term | 6-month term | 12-month term |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6GB | $25 per month | $20 per month | $15 per month |
| 17GB | $35 per month | $25 per month | $20 per month |
| 23GB | $45 per month | $35 per month | $25 per month |
| Unlimited | $40 per month | $35 per month | $30 per month |
Mint also adds provider recovery fees, federal fees, and state or local government taxes. For example, the current 12-month Unlimited Broadband Facts disclosure lists a $2.10 recovery fee, a $0.21 Federal Universal Service Fund fee, a $0.01 Federal Cost Recovery Fee, and up to $0.40 in other government fees, plus location-based taxes. Your total may differ by plan and location.

What do Mint plans include?
All plans include unlimited domestic talk and text, 5G access at no additional charge where available, mobile hotspot access, Wi-Fi calling on compatible devices, and eSIM activation on eligible phones. Mint also includes calling to Mexico, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
Metered plans do not charge data overage fees when you use all of the included data. Your data access may be limited unless you purchase additional data or hotspot data separately.

The Unlimited plan includes up to 20GB of hotspot data. Mint also states that video streaming on Unlimited is in standard definition, so it is not designed for consistently high-resolution mobile streaming.
The catch with “unlimited” data
Mint’s Unlimited plan is not unlimited high-priority data. Under Mint’s network-management policy, customers who use more than 50GB during a monthly cycle may have their data traffic prioritized below other users when the T-Mobile network is congested. Hotspot use counts toward that 50GB threshold.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMint says it does not currently apply a fixed speed cap to Unlimited plans. However, a customer who crosses the threshold can experience congestion-related slowdowns for the rest of the billing cycle. The practical effect depends on the local tower, time of day, signal strength, buildings, terrain, and the number of people using that network location.
This is most relevant if you use your phone as a home internet substitute, stream frequently over cellular data, or regularly exceed 50GB. A higher-priority T-Mobile customer in the same crowded location may receive faster service than a Mint customer.
How good is Mint coverage and speed?
Mint coverage is broadly comparable to T-Mobile coverage because Mint uses T-Mobile’s network. That does not mean performance will be identical everywhere. Coverage maps are estimates, and a usable signal at home does not guarantee the same experience at work, on a commute, or in a particular building.
Before buying, enter several ZIP codes or addresses into Mint’s coverage map. Check your home, workplace, school, frequently visited areas, and common travel destinations rather than relying on one address.

Mint’s current Broadband Facts labels list typical ranges of 79–357 Mbps for downloads, 6–30 Mbps for uploads, and 17–32 milliseconds of latency. These are disclosure ranges, not speed guarantees. Congestion and indoor signal conditions can produce results outside those ranges.
Can you try Mint before switching?
Mint offers a See For Yourself Kit through its app. The trial lasts up to seven days and can use a temporary number in some cases. It includes up to 250 SMS messages, 250 voice minutes, and 250MB of data, and it must be activated within 45 days of receiving the SIM or eSIM.
That limited trial is separate from Mint’s seven-day money-back guarantee for eligible full-plan purchases made through Mint’s website or app. Do not confuse the trial’s small data allowance with a full test of a normal monthly plan.
What phones work with Mint?
You can bring your own phone if it is compatible with Mint’s network, unlocked, and equipped for the required T-Mobile network technologies. Mint recommends checking compatibility with the phone’s IMEI before purchasing service.
For an iPhone, check the unlock status at Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. The phrase “No SIM restrictions” means the phone is unlocked.
Phones bought directly from Mint are currently locked to Mint. They automatically become eligible for unlocking 60 days after activation, subject to Mint’s device-unlock policy. That matters if you expect to move to another carrier soon or want to resell the phone as an unlocked device.

How to keep your current phone number
During activation, choose “Transfer My Number.” You will generally need your existing carrier’s account number, number transfer PIN or account PIN, and billing ZIP code.
- Collect the account and transfer information from your current carrier.
- Start the Mint activation and select “Transfer My Number.”
- Enter the requested account details exactly as they appear with the old carrier.
- Keep the old service active until the transfer is complete.
- Test calls, texts, and data on Mint before cancelling the old account.
Most transfers finish within a few hours. Incorrect information can extend the process to 48 hours, while landline transfers can take up to five business days. Cancelling your old service first can make the transfer more difficult and risks losing the number.

Mint includes roaming in Canada with unlimited talk and text plus 3GB of high-speed data per month. Mint says this benefit is not intended for extended international use.
For other destinations, Mint sells Minternational Passes that work in more than 180 countries:
| Pass | Included service | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 1 day | 60 minutes, 60 texts, 1GB of data | $5 |
| 3 days | 200 minutes, 200 texts, 3GB high-speed data, then unlimited slower data | $10 |
| 10 days | 500 minutes, 500 texts, 10GB high-speed data, then unlimited slower data | $20 |
| 30 days, no data | 100 minutes and 100 texts | $5 |
Passes expire 360 days after purchase and cannot be used on cruises or airlines. If you spend long periods abroad, a local SIM, eSIM, or an international-focused carrier may be more practical.

Mint is most compelling for a single-line customer who:
Best Value
- Includes 3-in-1 sized SIM cards (Nano, Micro, Standard), with options of a CDMA or GSM SIM for network selection and compatibility.
- SIM cards and service plans are compatible with both 4G LTE and 5G networks.
- Service plan sold separately required for active service.
- Powerful coverage on SIMPLE Mobile’s nationwide 5G network
- No contracts, no mystery fees.
- Gets strong T-Mobile coverage at home, work, and during regular travel.
- Uses a moderate amount of mobile data.
- Owns an unlocked, compatible phone.
- Can pay several months of service upfront.
- Does not need extensive international roaming.
- Can tolerate possible slowdowns during congestion.
The upfront payment can also help control a budget because the service cost is known for the selected term. But it ties up cash and makes a bad coverage decision more expensive to unwind, even with the available trial and eligible money-back guarantee.
Who may be better off elsewhere?
Mint may not be the right fit if T-Mobile coverage is weak where you live or travel, or if your work depends on a reliable hotspot connection. It is also a weaker choice for someone who regularly uses more than 50GB of data or needs consistently higher network priority in crowded areas.
A traditional postpaid carrier may be more suitable if you want device subsidies, extensive retail-store support, family-plan pricing, bundled streaming or home services, or a bill paid monthly after service. Heavy international travelers may also prefer a plan with broader built-in roaming.
FAQ
Is Mint Mobile actually cheaper than major carriers?
It can be, especially for one line and a customer willing to prepay. The current introductory offer is $15 per month before taxes and fees, but renewal prices can reach $45 per month for the 23GB plan on a three-month term. Compare the full renewal cost, not just the promotional price.
Does Mint Mobile have the same coverage as T-Mobile?
Mint uses T-Mobile’s network, so coverage is broadly comparable. Actual service can differ because of congestion, signal strength, device compatibility, buildings, and location. Check Mint’s map at home, work, and regular travel destinations before switching.
What happens after using 50GB on Mint Unlimited?
Mint says Unlimited customers who use more than 50GB in a monthly cycle may be deprioritized during network congestion. There is no stated fixed speed cap, but congested locations may deliver slower data for the rest of that cycle. Hotspot use counts toward the threshold.
Can I cancel Mint Mobile whenever I want?
There is no contract or early-termination fee, but you generally pay for the selected term upfront. Cancelling stops future service or renewal; it does not necessarily refund the unused portion of a prepaid term. Eligible full-plan purchases made through Mint’s website or app may qualify for a seven-day money-back guarantee.
The Bottom Line
Mint Mobile is worth considering when T-Mobile works well in your area, you use less than roughly 50GB per month, and you can pay for several months upfront. Its low introductory price and simple prepaid structure can reduce wireless costs without a contract.

The $15 price should not be treated as the long-term cost. Taxes and fees are extra, renewal rates vary by term, and Unlimited customers can be deprioritized after 50GB during congestion. Check your key locations, verify your phone’s compatibility and unlock status, and use Mint’s trial before moving your number.
