Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) is an investing schedule: you put the same amount of money into an investment at regular intervals, whether prices are rising, falling or flat. A fixed contribution buys more shares or fund units when the price is lower and fewer when it is higher. The method can make it easier to follow a plan, but it does not guarantee a profit, prevent losses or ensure a lower average purchase price.
The most important question is where the money comes from. Regular contributions made as each paycheck arrives are different from taking a large sum that is already available and deliberately leaving part of it in cash while you invest gradually. The second choice may reduce immediate market exposure, but it can also miss gains if prices rise.

Dollar-cost averaging in plain English
The SEC Investor.gov glossary describes dollar-cost averaging as investing equal portions at regular intervals regardless of current market conditions. You decide the contribution amount and schedule in advance, then make the purchase without trying to forecast the next market high or low.

For example, a $500 monthly contribution buys $500 worth of the chosen investment each month. If the price is $50 per share, the purchase buys 10 shares. If the price later falls to $25, the same $500 buys 20 shares. At $100, it buys five shares. Your cash contribution stays constant; the number of units changes with the price.

DCA is a timing method, not an investment. It can be used to buy a diversified fund, an individual stock, a bond fund or another eligible asset, but the schedule does not make an unsuitable or undiversified investment appropriate.
How the math works
Each purchase follows a simple relationship:
Units purchased = fixed contribution ÷ current unit price
| Purchase | Contribution | Price per unit | Units bought |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $500 | $50 | 10 |
| 2 | $500 | $25 | 20 |
| 3 | $500 | $100 | 5 |
This arithmetic explains why a fixed schedule buys different quantities. It does not predict the investment’s future value. A falling price may allow more units to be purchased, but the existing holdings can still lose value. A rising price can increase the value of earlier purchases, while making each new contribution buy fewer units.
A concrete $10,000 example
FINRA’s 2026 illustration uses an investor with $10,000 available. Instead of investing the entire amount immediately, the investor invests $1,000 per month for 10 months and keeps the remaining balance accessible until each scheduled contribution. This is an illustration of a schedule, not a performance forecast.

Under that plan, the first month uses $1,000, the second month uses another $1,000 and so on until the full $10,000 has been invested. The number of shares acquired each month depends on that month’s price. Money waiting for its scheduled purchase remains outside the market during the waiting period, so it is not exposed to a market decline in the same way invested money is. It also does not participate in a market rise until it is invested.
FINRA summarizes the method this way: “With dollar-cost averaging, you invest in equal portions at regular intervals, regardless of current market conditions.” Read the full discussion of the illustration and its limitations in FINRA’s May 19, 2026 article.
Where DCA fits in a paycheck-based plan
Someone who contributes from every paycheck to a workplace defined-contribution retirement plan may already be using a DCA-like pattern. The money arrives gradually, and each contribution is invested on the plan’s regular schedule. In that situation, there is no $10,000 balance sitting in cash waiting to be deployed; investing as the money is earned is a different opportunity-cost comparison.
Automating a contribution can also remove the need to make a fresh decision each pay period. Your employer plan or brokerage may allow recurring transfers, but automation only executes the schedule. It does not remove market risk, check whether the chosen investment matches your goals or guarantee that the investment is diversified.

Why investors choose a fixed schedule
It reduces the need to predict short-term prices
Markets can move unpredictably, and many investors find it difficult to decide when a decline is over or when a rally will end. A predetermined schedule lets you invest without making a new market-timing judgment for every purchase.
It can support disciplined behavior
Regular contributions can help an investor continue following a long-term plan instead of stopping after a frightening headline or investing a large amount during a burst of enthusiasm. This behavioral benefit depends on actually maintaining the schedule through both rising and falling markets.
It limits immediate exposure for money held back
When a lump sum is divided into future contributions, the uninvested portion is not exposed to a market decline during the waiting period. That can make volatility easier to tolerate, but the same cash also misses any gains that occur before its scheduled investment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe main trade-off: gradual investing versus investing now
If the full amount is already available, DCA means deliberately delaying some investment. FINRA notes that gradual investing often produces lower returns than lump-sum investing, particularly over longer periods, when markets rise during the deployment period. The eventual difference cannot be known in advance.

| Question | Gradual DCA | Immediate lump-sum investment |
|---|---|---|
| Market exposure | Builds over the chosen schedule; reserved cash remains outside the market until each purchase. | The full amount is exposed as soon as the investment is made. |
| Effect in a rising market | Later contributions buy fewer units, and cash held back misses part of the rise. | More of the money participates from the start. |
| Effect after an early decline | Later contributions can buy more units at lower prices, although earlier holdings may lose value. | The entire amount experiences the decline immediately. |
| Behavioral experience | May feel easier for someone worried about investing at an unlucky moment. | Requires accepting full short-term exposure on day one. |
| Transaction activity | More purchases can mean more fees, if the account charges per transaction. | Usually fewer purchase transactions. |
There is no universally superior choice. The relevant comparison depends on whether the money is already available, how long it would remain in cash, the investor’s ability to tolerate volatility and the cost of each transaction.
Costs and practical limitations
Opportunity cost of cash
Cash reserved for future installments has an opportunity cost. If the market rises, that balance earns less—or no investment return—while it waits. The longer the schedule and the more money held back, the longer this trade-off lasts.
Transaction charges
If a broker or plan charges a commission, trading fee or other per-purchase cost, splitting one investment into many purchases can increase total charges. Even small fees reduce the amount that reaches the investment. Check the account’s current fee schedule before selecting weekly, biweekly or monthly purchases.

Money must remain available
A DCA schedule is a commitment to use reserved cash for its stated purpose. Spending that cash, moving it to another goal or missing transfers can leave the plan only partly implemented. Keep the installment money in an account where it is accessible on each scheduled date, while recognizing that cash balances may have their own terms and risks.

It does not lower risk in the investment itself
DCA changes when purchases occur. It does not prevent an investment from declining, protect principal, create diversification or make a high-risk asset suitable. Asset allocation, diversification, time horizon and emergency savings still need to be considered separately. Investor.gov’s guidance on planning emphasizes a diversified, risk-appropriate long-term approach: “Don’t Panic, Plan It!”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to set up a DCA plan
- Identify the money’s source. Decide whether contributions will come from each paycheck or from a lump sum already in your bank or brokerage account. This determines whether you are investing new cash as it arrives or delaying investment of money you already have.
- Choose the investment. Select an investment that fits your goals, time horizon and risk tolerance. DCA cannot correct an unsuitable choice. Consider whether you need a diversified fund or another allocation rather than focusing only on the schedule.
- Set the contribution amount. Pick an amount you can sustain after essential expenses, emergency reserves and other obligations. For a lump sum, write down the total, installment size and number of installments so the plan has a defined end.
- Choose an interval and duration. Common intervals include each payday, monthly or quarterly. The shorter the interval, the sooner the money is deployed; the longer the interval, the longer some cash remains uninvested. State the exact start date, end date and number of purchases.
- Decide what happens to uninvested cash. Keep future installments identifiable and available. Do not count reserved cash as part of the market investment until the scheduled purchase occurs.
- Check fees and account rules. Confirm commissions, fund transaction charges, transfer limits, minimums, settlement timing and any restrictions on recurring purchases. Include each applicable cost in the plan’s expected cash requirement.
- Automate and verify. Use the recurring-contribution or automatic-investment feature offered by your workplace plan or brokerage, then check the first transfer and purchase. Confirm that the amount, date and destination are correct rather than assuming automation succeeded.
- Review for suitability, not market predictions. Revisit the investment mix and contribution affordability when your goals, income or risk tolerance change. Do not cancel solely because the market fell if the investment still fits your written plan; do change course when the underlying goal or suitability has changed.
Illustrative price paths
The following examples show the mechanics only. They are hypothetical arithmetic, not forecasts or evidence that one path is more likely.
| Month | Fixed contribution | Hypothetical price | Units purchased |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $300 | $30 | 10 |
| 2 | $300 | $15 | 20 |
| 3 | $300 | $20 | 15 |
| 4 | $300 | $40 | 7.5 |
Across these four purchases, the investor contributes $1,200 and acquires 52.5 units before any fees. The eventual account value depends on the later price, not simply on the number of units purchased. A lower price increases units bought with that installment, but it is not itself a guarantee of a profitable result.

- You receive investable money gradually and want each paycheck contribution invested without trying to time the market.
- You have a written long-term allocation and prefer a preset process to making repeated emotional decisions.
- You understand that reserved cash can miss gains and accept that trade-off in exchange for reducing immediate exposure.
- Your account permits recurring purchases at a cost that does not materially undermine the contribution.
When to pause and compare alternatives
- You already hold a large cash balance and are considering a long deployment period solely because a market forecast makes you anxious. Compare the opportunity cost of waiting with your ability to tolerate a lump-sum decline.
- Per-transaction fees, spreads or minimums make frequent purchases expensive. A less frequent schedule or a fee-free arrangement may change the arithmetic.
- The proposed investment is concentrated, speculative or inconsistent with your time horizon. Changing the schedule will not fix the underlying suitability problem.
- You would need emergency savings or near-term spending money to keep the schedule running. Investment contributions should not compromise essential cash reserves.
A decision checklist
- Is the money arriving over time, or is it already available today?
- How many days or months will some of it stay in cash?
- What could be missed if prices rise during that period?
- What level of early decline could you tolerate if you invested everything immediately?
- What fees apply to every purchase, transfer or fund transaction?
- Does the selected investment provide the diversification and risk level your plan requires?
- Can you keep the contribution schedule through both rising and falling markets?
Bottom line
Dollar-cost averaging is a consistent purchasing schedule, not a promise of better returns. Equal contributions buy more units at lower prices and fewer at higher prices, which can simplify investing and reduce the pressure to predict short-term market moves. When a lump sum is already available, however, holding money back creates an opportunity cost and may underperform investing immediately if prices rise. Choose the approach by weighing the money’s source, time in cash, fees, risk tolerance and the suitability of the investment itself.
