What Is CoreWeave and How Does Its GPU Cloud Compare With AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud?

CoreWeave is a specialized AI cloud provider for GPU-intensive model training and inference. It combines NVIDIA GPU capacity with object and file storage, GPU-local caching, networking, and orchestration software. It can be a strong fit when your workload is dominated by large GPU clusters and predictable AI infrastructure, while AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud can be better when you also need broad databases, identity, analytics, compliance, and application services.

There is no universal cheapest or fastest provider. The result depends on the exact GPU, region, cluster topology, utilization, storage and data-transfer pattern, quota, interruption tolerance, and contract. Use published rates as a starting point, then validate the complete workload cost and training time with a benchmark and a quote for the configuration you will actually run.

What CoreWeave is

CoreWeave describes itself as an AI cloud provider that supplies GPU computing, storage, networking, and software for training and running AI models. The company says it was established in 2017 and completed its Nasdaq public listing in March 2025. In its 2025 shareholder letter, CoreWeave reported $5 billion in annual revenue and 168% year-over-year growth. Those figures are company-reported results, not independent market estimates.

A specialist rather than a general-purpose cloud

A general-purpose hyperscaler sells a very broad set of infrastructure and managed services, with GPU virtual machines as one part of the portfolio. CoreWeave is organized around accelerated computing. That changes what you should evaluate. Instead of starting with the number of available services, start with the GPU model, the number of GPUs that can be placed in one job, the interconnect between nodes, the speed at which training data can be read, scheduler behavior, inference controls, regional capacity, support, and the commercial terms for keeping that capacity available.

The distinction does not mean CoreWeave lacks ordinary cloud components. Its platform includes storage and networking as well as compute. It means those components are presented as parts of an AI infrastructure stack, with the goal of keeping expensive accelerators supplied with data and useful work.

How the CoreWeave platform fits an AI workload

GPU compute

CoreWeave offers configurations built around NVIDIA accelerators, including L40, L40S, A100, H200, and GB200 NVL72 examples in its published pricing. The right choice depends on the model, precision, memory requirement, batch size, and whether the job is training, fine-tuning, or inference. A lower-priced GPU can be uneconomical if it forces a job to run much longer or prevents the model from fitting in memory.

Object and file storage

CoreWeave’s SEC filing describes purpose-built object and file storage, along with GPU-local caching. Object storage is useful for durable datasets, checkpoints, and artifacts; file storage can support workloads that expect a shared filesystem; and local caching can reduce repeated reads from remote storage. The practical question is not simply how much storage costs. Measure whether the storage path can feed every GPU at the rate your input pipeline requires, especially when many nodes start the same training epoch or restore a large checkpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Networking and cross-cloud reach

The platform also emphasizes networking and cross-cloud reach. Moving data between a data lake, a training cluster, and an inference environment can cost money and add latency, so map where each dataset and model artifact lives before selecting a region. Cross-cloud capability may help when data or downstream services remain elsewhere, but it does not eliminate transfer charges, security review, or the engineering work of operating across providers.

Software for training and inference

CoreWeave positions software and orchestration as part of the AI lifecycle. For training, examine how jobs are queued, how multi-node runs are launched, and how failed or preempted work is recovered. For inference, examine autoscaling, endpoint controls, model loading time, observability, and the ability to keep capacity warm. These details can affect total cost as much as the listed hourly GPU price.

CoreWeave published GPU prices

CoreWeave’s pricing page lists regional on-demand and spot configurations. The following examples are from the North America table unless otherwise noted. Each price is for the complete configuration shown, per hour; it is not a per-GPU figure unless the configuration itself contains one GPU.

GPU configuration On-demand price Spot price Pricing context
NVIDIA L40, 8 GPUs $10.00 per hour $6.27 per hour Example listed in CoreWeave’s North America table
NVIDIA L40S, 8 GPUs $18.00 per hour $7.88 per hour Example listed in CoreWeave’s North America table
NVIDIA A100, 8 GPUs $21.60 per hour $9.65 per hour Example listed in CoreWeave’s North America table
NVIDIA H200, 8 GPUs $50.44 per hour $20.93 per hour Example listed in CoreWeave’s North America table
NVIDIA GB200 NVL72, 4 GPUs $42.00 per hour Not listed for this example On-demand example shown on the accessed pricing page

These are listed examples, not permanent quotes. Region, availability, machine shape, software image, storage, networking, taxes, and contract terms can change the amount you pay. A spot price is also not equivalent to guaranteed capacity: an interrupted job may need to restart or restore from a checkpoint. Compare the cost of successful training, not just the lowest hourly number.

Turning an hourly rate into a workload cost

For a rough estimate, multiply the configuration’s hourly price by the number of running hours, then add storage, data transfer, orchestration, and any capacity that sits idle. For example, an eight-GPU H200 configuration running continuously for a 10-hour experiment would have a compute line of 10 times $50.44 at the listed on-demand rate, before those other charges. That arithmetic is only an illustration; it does not predict a production invoice or account for changing prices and interruptions.

How AWS compares

GPU families and a published discount announcement

AWS operates GPU-accelerated EC2 families within a much broader cloud platform. In a 2025 announcement, AWS said selected NVIDIA GPU-accelerated P4 and P5 instances could receive price reductions of up to 45%. The announcement identifies P5 as an H100 family and P5en as an H200 family. The phrase “up to” matters: it applies to selected instances and does not establish a single H100 or H200 price for every region or purchase option.

What to verify on AWS

Check the exact region, operating system, tenancy, instance type, purchase option, and current catalog entry. On-demand, Savings Plans or reservations, and interruption-prone capacity can produce very different effective rates. Include the instance’s non-GPU CPU, memory, local storage, and networking characteristics in a comparison with an eight-GPU configuration elsewhere. A lower accelerator rate can be offset if the surrounding instance is oversized, if the job cannot obtain enough quota, or if data must cross regions.

AWS is often attractive when the AI job already depends on its identity, networking, databases, analytics, security controls, or deployment tooling. Keeping data and production services in the same estate can reduce integration work, even when a specialist provider shows a lower headline GPU rate.

How Google Cloud compares

A3 H100 and A3 Ultra H200 machines

Google Cloud offers accelerator-optimized A3 H100 virtual machines and A3 Ultra H200 virtual machines. Its pricing documentation states that each GPU adds to the cost of the VM machine type, so the accelerator charge and the base machine charge must be evaluated together. Google Cloud provides on-demand pricing as well as sustained-use or committed-use options and spot pricing.

What to verify on Google Cloud

Identify the complete A3 machine shape, region, commitment term, and whether the workload can tolerate spot interruption. Then add persistent storage, snapshot or checkpoint storage, network egress, and any services used to prepare or serve the model. A commitment can lower the effective rate for a steady fleet but can be wasteful if experiments are seasonal or if the required GPU type changes quickly.

Google Cloud may be the better operational fit when your data pipelines, analytics, model-serving controls, or organization-wide identity are already there. The decision should still be based on measured training throughput and total cost for the selected A3 configuration, not on the accelerator name alone.

How Azure fits the comparison

Azure combines GPU virtual machines with a broad set of enterprise services. For a current price comparison, select the exact GPU SKU and region in the Azure catalog and confirm quota, availability, operating-system charges, purchase option, and network terms. A generic Azure GPU price is not reliable because the SKU, location, and commercial commitment materially change the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Azure can make sense when an organization’s identity, networking, data estate, governance, and application operations are already centered there. A specialist GPU cloud can still be worth considering for a large training burst, but the comparison must include the engineering cost of moving data, reproducing security controls, and connecting the training environment to the rest of the application stack.

CoreWeave versus the hyperscalers: the decision axes

Decision axis CoreWeave AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud
Primary orientation AI- and GPU-focused cloud stack covering compute, storage, networking, and software Broad cloud platforms with GPU virtual-machine families plus databases, identity, analytics, and application services
GPU price visibility Regional on-demand and spot tables, with some configurations marked for sales contact Published catalogs and pricing components; exact SKU, region, commitment, and purchase option matter
Software breadth Specialized AI compute, storage, networking, and inference tooling Broader managed-service and enterprise integration portfolios
Capacity and scale Assess reserved capacity, cluster size, interconnect, and support terms Assess quota, reservations or commitments, region, and fit with the existing cloud estate
Cost method Combine GPU time with storage, egress, orchestration, and idle capacity Combine VM and GPU charges with storage, networking, commitments, and spot or preemptible interruption risk

This table describes positioning, not a performance ranking. A provider that looks cheaper per hour can become more expensive if it delivers fewer useful training steps per hour, has insufficient capacity when you need it, or requires substantial data movement.

Which cloud is best for H100 or H200 training?

Start with the job’s shape

H100 and H200 training decisions are primarily systems decisions. Record the number of GPUs needed at once, the expected run length, checkpoint size, input-data rate, acceptable restart time, and whether the job needs a tightly coupled multi-node topology. A single-node fine-tuning run has different requirements from a multi-node pretraining run, even when both use the same accelerator.

When CoreWeave is a strong candidate

  • The workload is dominated by large NVIDIA GPU training or inference runs.
  • You value an AI-specialized stack rather than a general collection of cloud services.
  • The required GPU configuration and region are available when the job must start.
  • Your team can evaluate storage throughput, interconnect, scheduler behavior, support, and contract terms alongside the hourly price.

When a hyperscaler is a stronger candidate

  • The application depends heavily on an existing identity, networking, database, analytics, or compliance environment.
  • Data already resides in the provider’s region and moving it would add cost, latency, or governance risk.
  • You need a broad set of managed services around the model, not only accelerator capacity.
  • Your organization can use an existing quota, reservation, commitment, or enterprise agreement.

Why the H200 label is not enough

Two H200 offerings can differ in CPU balance, memory, network topology, storage path, scheduler, and availability. Compare the useful throughput of your own training code and data pipeline. Measure time to first batch, sustained tokens or samples per second, checkpoint time, recovery time after interruption, and inference latency at the target batch size. Use the same software versions, precision settings, dataset slice, and checkpoint policy for each test.

A practical cost model for any provider

Build the estimate in layers so a low accelerator rate cannot hide a high total cost.

  1. Compute: record the complete VM or GPU configuration and its on-demand, committed, reserved, or spot rate.
  2. Utilization: estimate actual running hours, including startup, data staging, checkpointing, evaluation, and idle time between jobs.
  3. Storage: include active datasets, cached copies, checkpoints, snapshots, logs, and retention periods.
  4. Data movement: price ingress and egress for the region and service path you will use. Include transfers to an external data lake, another cloud, or production endpoints.
  5. Orchestration and operations: account for schedulers, control-plane services, monitoring, support, and the engineering time needed to operate the environment.
  6. Interruption and failure: model the expected cost of restarting spot jobs, restoring checkpoints, and keeping a small on-demand safety pool.
  7. Commercial terms: compare quote validity, minimum commitments, cancellation rules, reserved capacity, and support response terms.

Use both cost per running hour and cost per completed training run. The second measure is usually more useful because it captures throughput, setup time, interruption recovery, and wasted capacity.

How to run a fair provider evaluation

1. Define a representative workload

Select a model and dataset slice that exercise the memory, communication, storage, and preprocessing behavior of production. A synthetic benchmark that fits easily in memory may hide the bottleneck that matters most.

2. Request equivalent configurations

Ask each provider for the same GPU count, comparable accelerator generation, region, CPU and memory balance, storage performance, network topology, and software image. If one provider cannot offer an equivalent shape, document the difference instead of treating the prices as directly interchangeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Confirm capacity before committing

Obtain a written answer about available capacity, lead time, maximum cluster size, quota, scaling behavior, and what happens if capacity is unavailable. A published SKU does not guarantee that a large cluster can be started on your schedule.

4. Benchmark useful work

Measure sustained training throughput, input-pipeline utilization, checkpoint duration, multi-node scaling, inference latency, and recovery from interruption. Repeat enough runs to distinguish normal variation from a one-off result.

5. Price the complete path

Attach storage, egress, orchestration, support, and idle-time estimates to the benchmark results. Convert the result into cost per completed run, cost per million training tokens or samples where appropriate, and cost per served request for inference.

6. Review operational and legal requirements

Check data residency, access controls, audit requirements, incident response, support coverage, service-level commitments, and exit procedures. A technically attractive cluster is not useful if it cannot pass the organization’s governance review.

Common failure modes and how to avoid them

Comparing a per-GPU price with a full machine

Some published rates describe an entire multi-GPU configuration. Others separate the accelerator from the VM machine type. Normalize every quote to the same unit: complete configuration per hour, then cost per completed workload.

Assuming spot capacity is guaranteed

Spot pricing can be compelling for checkpointed experiments, batch inference, and fault-tolerant training. It is risky for a job that cannot resume cleanly. Test checkpoint restore before moving a critical run to interruptible capacity and retain an on-demand fallback if the deadline matters.

Ignoring data locality

Repeatedly pulling large datasets or checkpoints across regions can erase a GPU-price advantage. Place high-read data near the training cluster where policy permits, use caching deliberately, and include every transfer path in the estimate.

Under-sizing storage and networking

If GPUs wait for data or checkpoints take too long, the nominal accelerator utilization is misleading. Monitor input stalls, storage throughput, network saturation, and checkpoint duration during the benchmark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying a commitment before demand is known

Committed or reserved capacity can reduce the rate of steady workloads, but research projects and model architectures change. Establish a baseline of actual utilization and secure capacity for the predictable portion before committing the entire forecast.

Forgetting the production handoff

Training is only one stage. Confirm how the resulting model will move to evaluation, a registry, an inference endpoint, monitoring, and the application that serves users. A lower training bill may not offset a complicated production path.

Bottom line: choosing CoreWeave or a hyperscaler

Choose CoreWeave when your central problem is obtaining and operating substantial NVIDIA GPU capacity for AI training or inference, and its available configuration, region, support, and pricing fit your workload. Choose AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud when the surrounding platform—identity, data, analytics, governance, or application integration—is more important than a specialist GPU stack, or when an existing commitment makes the complete cost lower.

For H100 or H200 work, make the final call only after an equivalent benchmark and an exact quote. Include topology, storage throughput, data movement, utilization, interruption recovery, quota, and contract terms. That process produces a defensible answer for your workload; a generic claim that one provider is always cheapest or best does not.
