China’s STAR 50 Index is the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) benchmark for 50 leading, relatively liquid securities listed on its Science and Technology Innovation Board, commonly called the STAR Market. It is a free-float-adjusted, market-capitalization-weighted price index: larger eligible companies generally receive larger weights, but the methodology caps one constituent at 10% and the five largest together at 40%.
The index is calculated by adding the adjusted market capitalizations of its constituents, dividing by a divisor, and multiplying by a base value. Constituent selection and weights are reviewed under the current methodology on a semiannual schedule, so the names and percentages are not permanent.

What the STAR 50 Index represents
The STAR 50 is a component index designed to represent the performance of core companies listed on the SSE STAR Market. The STAR Market is the Shanghai Stock Exchange board focused on science and technology innovation. As a result, the STAR 50 is a concentrated benchmark for that board’s larger and more liquid investable companies, not a measure of every company listed in Shanghai or every technology company in China.
Its constituents can include eligible stocks and depositary receipts listed on the STAR Market. The index is intended to give investors, analysts and market observers a rules-based way to discuss the leading securities in that specific board.

“STAR 50” normally means the price-index version. The SSE also identifies total-income and net-income versions, which apply their own conventions for incorporating distributions. A performance statement should therefore identify the variant being used.
How companies enter the STAR 50
Selection starts with securities listed on the SSE STAR Market that satisfy the methodology’s eligibility requirements. The process is not simply a count of the 50 newest listings, nor is it an equal sample of industries. It ranks eligible securities using market size and trading liquidity, then selects the leading 50.
Market capitalization
The size test uses average daily total market capitalization over the relevant lookback period. This reduces the chance that one unusually high or low trading day determines membership. Companies with larger sustained market values are more likely to rank highly.
Liquidity screening
Securities with insufficient trading liquidity are screened out before the final ranking. Liquidity matters because a benchmark intended to represent investable securities should not be dominated by shares that rarely trade or would be difficult for portfolios to enter and exit.
What the ranking means
The launch explanation from the Shanghai Stock Exchange and China Securities Index describes selecting the top 50 stocks and depositary receipts after applying market-value and liquidity criteria. In practical terms, membership reflects a combination of scale and tradability. A company can be prominent in its industry yet fail to qualify if it does not meet the methodology’s eligibility or liquidity conditions.
| Selection element | What it does |
|---|---|
| Eligible universe | Limits the starting pool to securities listed on the SSE STAR Market. |
| Average daily total market capitalization | Measures sustained size over the methodology’s lookback period. |
| Liquidity screen | Removes securities that do not trade sufficiently for the index rules. |
| Comprehensive ranking | Produces the 50-stock-and-depositary-receipt constituent set. |

It is not the same as adding share prices, and it does not give every constituent an identical influence.
Step 1: Start with each constituent’s price
For every constituent, the calculation uses its current market price. A price increase raises that security’s contribution, while a price decrease lowers it, all else equal.
Step 2: Apply free-float-adjusted shares
The price is multiplied by the number of free-float-adjusted shares. Free float is the portion of shares treated as available to public investors under the index rules, rather than every share that may exist in a company’s capital structure. Strategic holdings, restricted holdings or other shares not considered publicly available can therefore have less or no influence on this part of the calculation, depending on the applicable rules.
Step 3: Apply the weight factor
The methodology applies a weight factor to enforce concentration limits. Before caps, the basic influence of a constituent is related to its free-float-adjusted market capitalization. The weight factor can reduce that influence when the uncapped result would breach the permitted maximum.
Step 4: Add the adjusted market capitalizations
The adjusted market capitalization for each constituent is:

Security price × number of free-float-adjusted shares × weight factor
The index adds those adjusted values across all 50 constituents to obtain current total adjusted market capitalization.
Step 5: Divide by the divisor and multiply by the base value
The aggregate is divided by the index divisor and multiplied by the base value. The base value establishes the index’s starting scale; it is not a currency amount and does not mean that an investor can buy the index at that number of points.
The divisor is a continuity mechanism. Corporate actions or capital-structure events can change the aggregate market value mechanically without representing an equivalent economic gain or loss for someone tracking the portfolio. Adjusting the divisor prevents the published index from jumping merely because shares, rights or other capital details changed. The result is an index series intended to reflect market performance rather than bookkeeping changes.
Is STAR 50 price-weighted or market-cap weighted?
It is free-float-adjusted market-cap weighted, with caps. It is not price-weighted and it is not equal-weighted.
In a price-weighted index, a high nominal share price can give a company a large influence even if its total market value is modest. STAR 50 does not work that way. Its starting influence comes from free-float-adjusted market capitalization. In an equal-weight index, every constituent would begin with the same percentage. STAR 50 instead gives larger eligible companies more influence, subject to the concentration rules.

The SSE launch explanation summarizes the approach as an index “weighted by free-float market capitalization with an upper limit of weight set for individual stocks.” The cap means that a very large company may rank among the 50 but still have its effective index weight reduced.

Concentration limits in the methodology
| Limit | Rule in the June 2025 methodology | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| One constituent | Maximum 10% | No single security can dominate the index beyond the permitted ceiling. |
| Five largest constituents combined | Maximum 40% | The five biggest positions together cannot account for more than two-fifths of the index. |
These are concentration controls, not diversification guarantees. The index remains a focused portfolio of 50 securities from one exchange board, and several large companies can still account for a substantial share of its movement. The limits simply prevent the largest names from becoming even more dominant than the rules allow.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the STAR 50 changes: reviews and rebalancing
The latest methodology described here uses semiannual reviews. Scheduled adjustments take effect after the second Friday of June and December. Under the June 2025 methodology, no more than 20% of constituents would normally be changed at a scheduled review.
There is an important historical distinction. The launch-era SSE question-and-answer material described quarterly reviews, but the newer June 2025 methodology specifies a semiannual schedule. For current reporting, the newer dated methodology should be treated as the operative description unless a later official notice changes it.
Changes can also arise from events covered by the maintenance rules, such as corporate actions or circumstances affecting eligibility. The exchange and China Securities Index announcement dated September 1, 2026 provides a live example: five constituents were replaced, with the changes effective September 14, 2026. That is why a current constituent list or weight should be checked against the latest SSE or CSI notice rather than copied from an older factsheet.

With 50 constituents, a normal maximum change proportion of 20% corresponds to 10 securities at a scheduled review. The rule is a ceiling under the methodology, not a promise that exactly 10 names will change. The September 2026 example involved five replacements.

STAR 50 versus the SSE 50
The names are similar, but the indexes are different benchmarks.
| Comparison point | STAR 50 | SSE 50 |
|---|---|---|
| Universe | SSE STAR Market only | A separate Shanghai Stock Exchange large-company benchmark with its own eligible universe |
| Purpose | Represents leading companies on the science-and-technology-focused STAR Market | Represents a broader set of leading Shanghai-listed companies under the SSE 50 rules |
| Selection | Market-capitalization and liquidity criteria within the STAR Market | Its own eligibility, ranking and maintenance methodology |
| Weighting | Free-float-adjusted market capitalization, capped at 10% per constituent and 40% for the top five combined | Not interchangeable with STAR 50; consult the SSE 50 methodology for its specific weighting and caps |
| Review schedule | Current methodology: semiannual, effective after the second Friday of June and December | May follow a different schedule under its own rules |
Comparing their index levels directly is not meaningful because each has its own universe, base value, divisor and methodology. A useful comparison instead asks which companies are eligible, how constituents are ranked, how weights are assigned, how often the basket changes and whether the series is a price or income variant.
STAR 50 versus STAR 100
STAR 50 and STAR 100 both refer to the STAR Market, but they are not the same basket. STAR 50 contains 50 constituents. STAR 100, where used as a benchmark, contains 100 and therefore covers a larger portion of the board’s eligible universe. The two indexes can differ in sector mix, company size, liquidity profile and concentration even when they share many names.

Do not assume that STAR 100 is simply STAR 50 with another 50 securities appended. Each index has its own selection rules, ranking process, weighting details, caps and review notices. For an accurate comparison, check the relevant current methodology rather than inferring one index from the other.
How to read a STAR 50 factsheet correctly
- Confirm the index variant. Check whether the document says price, total-income or net-income. “STAR 50” by itself ordinarily refers to the price index.
- Check the date. Constituent names and weights can change after a review or maintenance event.
- Identify the universe. Confirm that the document refers to the SSE STAR Market, not the broader SSE market or the SSE 50.
- Look for the weighting language. The relevant terms are free-float-adjusted market capitalization, weight factor and concentration caps.
- Read the divisor and corporate-action notes. These explain why an index can remain continuous when share counts or capital structures change.
- Use the official notice for current constituents. The September 14, 2026 replacement notice demonstrates that an apparently authoritative older list can become stale.
What the index does—and does not—tell you
The STAR 50 tells you how a defined basket of leading, liquid STAR Market securities has performed under its rules. It can serve as a benchmark for products, portfolios or market commentary tied to that board.
It does not, by itself, establish that the constituents are suitable for a particular investor, that the index will rise, or that the index captures every important Chinese technology company. It is also not a direct measure of the entire Chinese economy. Those conclusions would require separate analysis of valuation, volatility, currency, market access, liquidity, investor eligibility and the specific product being considered.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- The STAR 50 is the SSE’s 50-security benchmark for leading companies on the STAR Market.
- Constituents are selected using market capitalization and liquidity criteria, not by equal sampling or listing date.
- The calculation is free-float-adjusted market-cap weighting with a divisor and base value.
- One constituent is capped at 10%, and the five largest together are capped at 40% under the June 2025 methodology.
- The current methodology uses semiannual reviews, with scheduled changes effective after the second Friday of June and December.
- Current constituents and weights should be verified in the latest SSE or CSI announcement, especially after a maintenance event.
