An NPU (neural processing unit) is a chip built to execute common neural-network operations efficiently. In a laptop or phone, the CPU coordinates the system, the GPU handles graphics and broad parallel workloads, and the NPU runs supported AI inference with the aim of reducing power use and cloud dependence. That can mean faster translations, image-generation features, transcription, camera effects or accessibility tools while data remains on the device—but only when the operating system, software framework, drivers and model all support the NPU.
NPU meaning in plain English
A neural processing unit is a specialized AI accelerator. Neural networks repeatedly perform operations such as matrix multiplication, convolution and activation functions. An NPU includes hardware arranged to perform those patterns efficiently, rather than asking a general-purpose processor to handle every operation one instruction at a time.

Most NPUs are designed primarily for inference: running a trained model to produce an answer. Training large models still generally requires data-center accelerators. Local inference can include speech recognition, noise removal, image enhancement, object detection, language translation and generative features, depending on the model and software support.

How the CPU, GPU and NPU divide the work
| Processor | Primary role | Typical AI contribution | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU | General-purpose coordination, operating-system tasks and serial logic | Runs unsupported operators, controls data flow and handles ordinary applications | Usually less efficient for sustained neural-network math |
| GPU | Graphics and highly parallel numerical workloads | Runs many AI models, especially larger or highly parallel workloads | Can draw more power and may compete with graphics or memory bandwidth |
| NPU | Recurring neural-network operations on a power-sensitive device | Runs supported local inference with a low-power design target | Works only with compatible operators, precision, drivers and frameworks |
A real application can use all three. For example, the CPU may capture audio and manage the user interface, the NPU may perform noise suppression, and the GPU may render a visual effect. If one model layer is unsupported, that part can fall back to the CPU, GPU or a cloud service.
How an NPU accelerates on-device AI
1. It keeps supported inference near the data
When a compatible model runs locally, input does not need to travel to a remote server for every prediction. Fewer round trips can reduce latency and allow a feature to continue working when connectivity is poor. Local execution can also help keep sensitive audio, images or text on the computer. This is not an automatic privacy guarantee: the application decides which data it sends away, and some features still use cloud processing.
2. It performs repeated math efficiently
Neural networks contain many repeated tensor operations. NPU hardware is arranged for those operations and can move data through its compute units with less general-purpose overhead than a CPU. The efficiency advantage is most visible during sustained workloads, such as continuous camera analysis or speech processing, rather than a single short calculation.

NPUs are intended for AI work on battery-powered devices. Moving a supported workload from the CPU or GPU to an NPU may reduce energy consumed per inference and leave the other processors available for interactive work. Actual battery improvement depends on the model, precision, memory transfers, drivers, thermal limits and how often the feature runs. An NPU does not guarantee longer battery life for every laptop.
4. It can reduce cloud latency and service dependence
A local model avoids waiting for a server response and does not require a per-request cloud service for that portion of the task. The practical result depends on model size and quality: a small local model may respond quickly but offer fewer capabilities than a larger remote model. Applications may combine local and cloud inference, sending only tasks that exceed local hardware or policy limits.
What “more than 40 TOPS” means for Copilot+ PCs
Microsoft defines Copilot+ PCs as Windows 11 systems with a high-performance NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS), according to its current developer documentation. Microsoft cites workloads such as real-time translation and image generation.
TOPS is a throughput indicator, not a complete performance or battery-life score. Vendors can quote TOPS using different numerical precisions and test conditions. A higher number may not produce a faster result if the model uses unsupported operators, needs frequent memory transfers or is limited by temperature. TOPS also says nothing by itself about model quality, local-storage capacity, software support or whether an application sends data to the cloud.

What can an NPU run locally?
Local capabilities vary by device and application. Common categories include:
- Speech and audio: transcription, translation, voice isolation, echo cancellation and wake-word detection.
- Images and video: background effects, super-resolution, object detection, segmentation and selected image-generation features.
- Language: summarization, classification, text prediction and small language models that have been converted for the device.
- Accessibility: live captions, translation and camera-based assistance.
- Security and device management: local pattern detection or biometric-related processing when the operating system and security design support it.
“Can run locally” is not the same as “always runs locally.” An application may use the NPU for one stage, the CPU or GPU for another, and a server for a larger model. Check the application’s privacy information and processing settings if keeping data on the device matters.
Is an NPU better than a GPU for AI?
Neither is universally better. An NPU is generally the better fit for a supported, recurring inference task on a battery-powered device where energy and sustained efficiency matter. A GPU is often more flexible for large models, graphics-related AI, development workloads and operations that the NPU does not support. A CPU remains essential for control logic and fallback work.

How to evaluate an NPU laptop
Do not rank laptops from TOPS alone. Compare the complete path from model to user-visible result.
Check the NPU specification and precision
Record the quoted TOPS value and the precision used to achieve it. A TOPS figure based on lower-precision arithmetic is not directly comparable with a figure measured at another precision. Ask whether the model you intend to run uses that precision without conversion overhead.
Verify operators and framework support
Find out whether the operating system, AI framework and runtime can compile the model for the NPU. Supported operators, quantization formats and model-conversion tools determine whether the entire graph runs there. Unsupported portions may silently fall back to the CPU, GPU or cloud, changing both speed and energy use.

Consider memory and thermals
Model weights and intermediate tensors must move through memory. Memory bandwidth, available RAM and the device’s thermal design can limit real performance even when the NPU’s theoretical throughput is high. Sustained tests under the workload you care about are more useful than a short peak figure.
Measure the result you actually need
Compare measured latency, throughput and battery life for your target application. For a meeting laptop, test continuous transcription or camera effects; for creative work, test the exact image or video tool. Also confirm whether processing stays local, is optional, or switches to a server when a feature reaches a limit.
Check software and regional availability
Feature support can depend on Windows version, application release, language, account type and country. A laptop may contain an NPU yet lack a particular feature until a driver or application update arrives. Treat advertised capabilities as conditional until the software documentation confirms your configuration.
Does an NPU save battery?
It can, but only under the right workload. An NPU is designed to execute supported neural-network operations efficiently, so moving continuous inference away from a CPU or GPU may lower energy use. The savings can disappear when data is repeatedly copied between processors, when an unsupported layer triggers fallback execution, or when the display and other components dominate consumption.
To judge battery impact, compare two systems while running the same application, model, screen brightness, network state and performance mode. Look for sustained battery measurements rather than a vendor’s isolated TOPS claim. A laptop that performs more work locally may also use additional energy overall if local AI enables a feature that previously was not running.

Do you need an NPU for Copilot+ features?
For a system to qualify as a Copilot+ PC under Microsoft’s current definition, it must include an NPU capable of more than 40 TOPS. Individual Copilot+ features can have additional software, language, account and regional requirements. A non-Copilot+ computer may still run many AI applications on its CPU, GPU or through cloud services, but it does not meet that Copilot+ hardware class.
If a specific feature is your reason for upgrading, verify three things before buying: the laptop meets the stated NPU threshold, the feature supports its processor and language, and the privacy settings match your expectations about local versus remote processing.

Developer view: what has to happen before the NPU is used
- Choose a model that fits the device. Reduce model size or quantize it when the NPU runtime requires lower precision, while checking the effect on accuracy.
- Convert and validate the model. Use the supported framework and runtime to translate the model graph. Identify operators, tensor types or dynamic shapes that are not supported.
- Compile for the target accelerator. The operating system and driver select an NPU execution provider when one is available. Keep a CPU or GPU provider as a fallback where appropriate.
- Profile end-to-end latency. Measure input preparation, memory copies, NPU execution and output handling. Timing only the NPU kernel can hide transfer costs.
- Test sustained behavior. Run the workload long enough to expose thermal throttling, memory pressure and changes in power consumption.
- Define data handling explicitly. Document which inputs remain local and which conditions cause cloud processing. Expose a setting or notice when users need control.
Microsoft provides documentation for local model execution and NPU programming. Framework support changes over time, so developers should test the exact driver, operating-system build and runtime shipped with their application.
Common NPU problems and fixes
The application uses the CPU instead
Confirm that the NPU driver is installed, the runtime’s NPU execution provider is enabled and every model operator is supported. Profile the graph to find the first unsupported operation. Converting the model, changing precision or updating the application may remove the fallback.
Performance is no better than a GPU
Check whether the workload is too short to amortize setup costs, whether memory transfers dominate, and whether the GPU has a more mature kernel for that model. Compare complete latency and energy use, not theoretical TOPS.
The feature still sends data to the cloud
Read the application’s processing and privacy controls. Local hardware does not force local execution; the service may require a remote model, account synchronization or server-side moderation. Disable cloud processing only if the feature remains useful and the software offers that choice.
Battery life falls during AI use
Check for thermal throttling, a high-performance power mode, display brightness and CPU/GPU fallback. Install current firmware and drivers, then repeat the test with the same model and settings. If the workload is not NPU-compatible, an NPU cannot provide its intended efficiency advantage.
What an NPU means for a personal technology budget
An NPU is valuable when it replaces a recurring cloud subscription, enables a privacy-sensitive workflow, or delivers a feature you will use often without draining the battery. It is harder to justify paying more solely for a TOPS number when your applications do not support the accelerator.
Before upgrading, list the AI tasks you perform each week, identify which ones must work offline, and check their documented hardware requirements. Compare the full laptop cost, expected service life, software support and measured battery performance for those tasks. The financially sensible choice is the least expensive system that reliably runs your required workload with acceptable privacy, speed and longevity—not automatically the one with the largest NPU specification.
