What Is an Electronic Fixed Deposit Receipt (e-FD Receipt) and How Does It Work?

An electronic fixed deposit receipt (e-FD receipt) is a bank’s digital record of a fixed or term deposit. It shows the deposit’s essential terms—such as the amount invested, opening date, tenure, maturity date and applicable interest rate—inside the bank’s app, internet-banking service or another digital channel. The deposit is the financial contract; the receipt is evidence and a reference record for that contract.

Indian banking sources use “fixed deposit receipt” (FDR) and “term deposit receipt” (TDR) for records of term deposits. Banks do not all use the same screens, documents or servicing rules, so the issuing bank’s current terms control how you access, correct, renew, close or withdraw the deposit.

What an electronic fixed deposit receipt contains

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) says a term-deposit receipt should show core particulars including the date of issue, period of deposit, due date and applicable interest rate. A bank’s digital view may include additional identifiers and instructions.

Detail Why it matters
Depositor name(s) Confirms whose money is recorded and helps identify joint-deposit instructions.
Deposit or receipt number Lets the bank locate the specific deposit when you request a service.
Principal amount Shows the sum placed into the term deposit, separate from the interest it may earn.
Issue or opening date Marks when the deposit was created and starts the stated tenure.
Period or tenure States how long the money is intended to remain on deposit.
Due or maturity date Identifies when the term ends under the recorded terms.
Applicable interest rate Records the rate attached to that deposit, which can differ from rates offered later.
Maturity instruction Shows whether proceeds are to be credited, renewed or handled under another instruction.
Nomination indication May indicate that a nomination is registered, but the bank’s nomination records are the controlling record.

Central Bank of India’s FDR page, for example, lists a CIF number, deposit date, deposit account number, depositor name(s), deposit amount, period, due date and interest rate. That is a bank-specific example, not a universal list for every electronic receipt.

How an e-FD receipt is created and used

  1. You choose the deposit. You select an amount, tenure, interest option and any maturity instruction under the bank’s term-deposit product.
  2. The bank accepts and records the funds. After the bank receives the money, it creates a deposit record in its systems.
  3. The receipt becomes available digitally. Depending on the bank, you may see the deposit in a mobile app, internet-banking dashboard, downloadable statement or another electronic channel. Some banks provide a separate receipt; others display the deposit details without a document labelled “receipt.”
  4. You verify the recorded terms. Check the name, amount, dates, rate and maturity instruction as soon as the deposit appears. Report an error through the bank’s stated support or branch process.
  5. The bank applies the maturity or closure instruction. At maturity, the bank follows the recorded direction, such as crediting proceeds to an account or renewing the deposit. Early closure, changes and payouts are governed by the product terms, not by the existence of a digital receipt.

Electronic format describes how the record is delivered or accessed. It does not, by itself, establish a particular withdrawal method, renewal rule or legal effect in every jurisdiction.

Where to find or download your receipt

The exact labels differ by bank and product. A typical path is:

  1. Sign in to the bank’s official mobile app or internet-banking site.
  2. Open Deposits, Investments or a similarly named section.
  3. Select Fixed Deposits, Term Deposits or My Deposits.
  4. Choose the relevant deposit using its number, amount or opening date.
  5. Look for View receipt, Download advice, Certificate, Statement or a print/share icon.
  6. Save the file only in a secure location and verify that the downloaded details match the deposit screen.

Some banks do not provide a downloadable file. In that case, the on-screen record and account statement may be the available electronic evidence, while a branch or customer-service channel can explain whether a paper copy is available.

Federal Bank example

Federal Bank’s FedMobile terms state: “Normally physical deposit receipt/passbook is not issued for term deposit/FSF opened through the app.” The same terms say a customer who wants a receipt may approach a branch. They also describe online-deposit proceeds being transferred to the debit account used to fund the deposit and an automatic-renewal arrangement under the product terms. These are Federal Bank procedures, not rules for every bank.

Is an electronic receipt proof of your deposit?

It is evidence of the bank’s recorded deposit and its terms, but it is not the deposit itself. The bank’s core account and deposit records remain important when ownership, maturity instructions, nomination or a servicing request is checked. Keep the receipt alongside statements and transaction confirmations so that you can reconcile the amount and dates.

The available Indian sources do not establish a universal rule that an electronic receipt has stronger, weaker or automatically identical legal effect compared with paper. They also do not establish a universal requirement to surrender a paper original before receiving maturity proceeds. Ask the issuing bank what document or authentication it requires for your specific deposit.

What happens at maturity, renewal or early closure?

Maturity payout

At the due date, the bank applies the instruction recorded for the deposit. That may be a transfer of principal and interest to a linked account, renewal of principal (with or without interest) or another option offered by the product. Confirm the destination account and instruction in the bank’s records rather than relying only on an old receipt.

Automatic renewal

Renewal terms vary by bank and deposit scheme. A receipt can show the original maturity date, but a renewed deposit may receive a new period, rate and maturity date. Check the updated record after renewal.

Premature closure

Closing before maturity is governed by the deposit’s terms and the bank’s prevailing rules. The interest paid can differ from the amount implied by the original rate, and some products may impose conditions or adjustments. Use the bank’s stated closure channel and ask for the amount payable before confirming the request.

Scheme-specific facilities

Central Bank of India describes its FDR product as allowing premature payment under prevailing rules, auto-renewal according to instructions and an advance facility up to a stated portion of the deposit. Those features belong to that product and should not be assumed for another bank or deposit type.

Nomination and joint deposits

A receipt may display a nomination indicator, but that display is not a substitute for confirming that the nomination was registered in the bank’s records. RBI guidance discusses registering nominations in bank records and indicating registration on deposit receipts. If a nominee, depositor name or operating instruction is wrong, contact the bank promptly; do not edit a downloaded file or treat a self-created annotation as an official correction.

For a joint deposit, review the names and operating instructions exactly as shown. The process for changing a mandate, adding a nominee or releasing funds after a depositor’s death depends on the bank’s forms and verification requirements.

Electronic versus paper fixed-deposit receipts

Comparison point Electronic access Paper receipt
How it is provided Displayed or downloaded through a bank channel, where supported. Printed or issued by a branch when the bank’s process allows.
Availability Requires access to the relevant app, website or bank records. Can be stored offline but may be lost or damaged.
Corrections Request a correction through the bank; do not alter the file yourself. Return to the bank for correction or reissue under its procedure.
Servicing requirements Authentication and the bank’s digital or branch process determine what is needed. The bank may ask for the document, but no universal surrender rule is established for electronic receipts.
Information shown May include live status, renewal details and account links in addition to receipt fields. Shows the particulars printed at issue; later changes may require a new document.

Neither format should be assumed to be universally superior or to have a different legal status without the issuing bank’s terms and applicable law.

Checks to make when your receipt appears

  • Match the depositor name(s) with your application and identity records.
  • Match the principal amount with the debit account transaction.
  • Confirm the issue date, tenure and due date.
  • Check that the interest rate and interest-payout option are the ones you selected.
  • Read the maturity instruction and linked-credit account carefully.
  • Check any nomination indication against the bank’s confirmation of registration.
  • Save the receipt or statement in an encrypted device location and keep a backup that does not expose passwords or one-time codes.

Common problems and what to do

The deposit is missing from the app

Confirm that you are signed into the same customer profile used to open the deposit and that the transaction has completed. Check the account statement and contact the bank through an official channel if the deposit still does not appear. Do not create a second deposit merely because the first receipt is delayed.

You cannot download or print the receipt

Try the bank’s web channel if the app has no export option, or ask whether the bank issues only an on-screen record. A branch may provide a paper copy where the bank’s terms permit it.

A date, amount or name is wrong

Keep the transaction confirmation, note the receipt identifier and request a correction immediately. The bank’s underlying record—not an edited PDF or screenshot—is what must be corrected.

You changed phones or lost access

Use the bank’s account-recovery process and never share login credentials or one-time passwords with someone claiming to be support. If access cannot be restored, ask the bank how to authenticate at a branch or through its verified service channel.

You want to close the deposit early

Read the applicable premature-closure terms and request a payoff quote before authorising closure. Ask where the proceeds will be credited and whether any instruction or identity verification is required.

Questions to ask your bank

  • Where is the official electronic receipt or deposit advice for this product?
  • Can I obtain a paper copy, and is there a fee or branch visit requirement?
  • What account receives maturity proceeds, and can the instruction be changed before the due date?
  • How does automatic renewal work, and where will the renewed terms appear?
  • What is the procedure and expected adjustment for premature closure?
  • How can I confirm or update nomination and joint-holder details?
  • Which document or authentication is required for a payout if I cannot access the app?

Important scope and limits

The terminology and examples here come from Indian banking sources, including RBI guidance and bank product pages. They should not be treated as rules for every country, bank or deposit product. Current interest rates, tax treatment, deposit-protection limits and legal requirements are not established here and can change. For a binding answer about access, closure, nomination or maturity, use the issuing bank’s current terms and verified support channels.
