A travel insurance deductible is the amount you must pay toward an otherwise covered claim before the insurer pays its share. In the United States this amount is usually called a deductible; in many UK and other policy documents it is called an excess. It lowers the potential payment and can leave you with no insurer payment when the eligible loss is no larger than the deductible.
The exact result depends on the policy wording. A deductible may apply per person, per claim, per trip, or per coverage section. Benefit limits, sublimits, exclusions, coordination with other insurance, and claim requirements can reduce or eliminate the payment as well.

What a travel insurance deductible means
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) defines a deductible as a dollar amount or percentage of a claim that the policyholder pays before the insurer pays its share. Applied to travel insurance, it is your contractual share of an eligible covered loss.
“Eligible” is important. A deductible does not turn an excluded event into a covered one. The trip problem, medical expense, baggage loss, or other expense must first meet the policy’s definition of a covered event, and you may have to satisfy notification, documentation, approval, or other conditions.

The Financial Ombudsman Service describes an excess as “an amount you have to pay towards making a claim.” That is the same basic idea, although the amount and the way it is applied differ between policies and countries.
How the deductible changes your payout
A useful way to think about a claim is:
Potential payment = eligible covered loss after the applicable deductible, subject to limits, sublimits, exclusions, coordination rules, and other policy terms.
This is a concept, not a universal claims formula. The insurer may define the eligible loss differently, and the wording controls whether the deductible is taken once or more than once.

Suppose an insurer accepts $1,000 as an eligible covered loss and the applicable deductible is $100. Before any other policy adjustment, the amount left for the insurer to pay is $900. This is an arithmetic illustration of the definition, not a promise that a particular plan will pay $900.
If the eligible loss does not exceed the deductible, there may be no amount for the insurer to pay. For example, a covered loss smaller than the stated deductible can be absorbed entirely by your share. Check the wording for any special minimums, percentage deductibles, or section-specific rules.

Where and how a deductible can apply
Do not assume that one deductible applies once to the whole policy or once to every incident. Travel policies can use different application units, and the Financial Ombudsman Service notes that excesses are commonly separate for each person and each coverage section.
| Policy wording | Practical question to ask |
|---|---|
| Per person | Does each insured traveler contribute a separate deductible when that person has a covered loss? |
| Per claim | Is the amount applied each time you submit a distinct claim? |
| Per trip | Does one amount apply to the covered loss for a particular trip, subject to the section’s terms? |
| Per coverage section | Are medical, baggage, cancellation, and other benefits assigned their own excess or deductible? |
A policy can combine these concepts. For instance, it may state one amount for baggage and another for medical expenses, or apply an amount to each insured person within a section. The declarations page, schedule of benefits, and full wording should be read together; a summary table alone may not show every trigger.

Medical, cancellation, interruption, baggage, rental-car, and other sections may not share the same deductible. One section may have no excess while another has a stated amount. A claim involving several sections can therefore require you to determine which section responds and which deductible belongs to it.
Limits and sublimits can reduce the result further
A deductible is only one part of the payout calculation. A benefit limit is the maximum the insurer will pay under a coverage section. A sublimit is a lower cap for a specified item or type of expense, such as valuables within baggage cover.
The Financial Ombudsman Service says the excess is usually taken into account before those limits are applied. In a simplified hypothetical policy, an accepted loss would first be reduced by the applicable excess and the resulting amount would then be tested against the section’s maximum or any relevant sublimit. The exact order and definitions in your contract prevail.

Consider the sequence without treating it as a guaranteed formula:
- Confirm that the event and expense are covered.
- Determine the eligible amount under the insurer’s definitions and evidence requirements.
- Identify the deductible or excess that applies and the unit on which it is charged.
- Apply the section’s benefit maximum and any item-specific sublimit.
- Account for exclusions, other insurance, coordination provisions, and any remaining conditions.
An expense can therefore be covered in principle but still produce a small payment, or none, after the deductible and caps are considered.
Coverage comes before the arithmetic
Before calculating a payout, verify that the reason for the loss is insured. Policies list covered situations and exclusions, and each contract sets its own limits. A cancellation caused by an excluded circumstance is not made payable merely because the financial loss is larger than the deductible.
Also check procedural requirements. A plan may require prior approval for certain medical treatment, prompt notice of a delay or loss, receipts, a police report, carrier documentation, or proof that you sought reimbursement elsewhere. Failure to meet a condition can affect the claim independently of the deductible.
Why terminology and rules vary by country
“Deductible” is common in U.S. materials, while “excess” appears frequently in UK, Australian, New Zealand, and other policy documents. The words describe a similar consumer contribution, but they do not guarantee identical mechanics.

U.S., UK, and New Zealand consumer guidance illustrates the shared concept without creating one worldwide legal rule. The NAIC advises that every policy sets its own limits and identifies its covered and excluded situations. New Zealand Consumer Protection likewise recommends reading the wording and checking the limits. For a real claim, use the current certificate and policy wording for the country where the policy was issued and contact the insurer if the calculation is unclear.
Choosing between a lower premium and a lower deductible
Some insurers let customers pay more for a lower excess, or accept a higher excess in exchange for a lower premium. This is a plan-specific tradeoff, not a universal discount rate.
Compare the premium difference with the amount you could have to pay from your own funds. A lower premium may be attractive when you can comfortably absorb the stated deductible and the trip has a low likelihood of a claim. A lower deductible may be worthwhile when a moderate loss would strain your cash flow. Neither choice compensates for weak coverage, broad exclusions, or limits that do not fit the trip.
Assess the exposure for each relevant section rather than looking only at the headline amount. A policy with a low medical deductible could still have a separate baggage excess, and a cancellation benefit may have different limits or conditions. If medical cover is relevant, also determine whether it is primary or secondary to another source of insurance; that coordination rule can affect what the travel policy pays after the deductible.

- Record every deductible or excess. Note the amount for medical, cancellation, baggage, and any other section you may use.
- Identify the application unit. Mark whether each amount is per person, claim, trip, or section, and look for wording that combines more than one unit.
- Check benefit limits. Compare the maximum payable under each section and any sublimit for valuables, electronics, sporting equipment, or other specified property.
- Read covered reasons and exclusions. Confirm that the causes most relevant to your trip are insured and note exclusions that could defeat a claim.
- Review claim requirements. Look for notice deadlines, receipts, medical approvals, carrier statements, police reports, and other evidence requirements.
- Compare premium against exposure. Calculate how much additional premium buys a lower deductible and decide whether that reduction is worth the cost.
- Check coordination provisions. If another health, card, employer, airline, or property policy may respond, see whether the travel policy is primary or secondary and how other insurance is treated.
Put the results in a side-by-side note before buying. The cheapest premium is not necessarily the least expensive outcome after a claim.
How to find the controlling wording in your documents
Start with the policy certificate or schedule for the amount shown for your coverage. Then open the definitions and the section that describes the benefit. Search the full document for “deductible,” “excess,” “your contribution,” “per person,” “per claim,” and “sublimit.”
Read nearby paragraphs rather than relying on a single search result. The operative rule may be in a general conditions section, while the schedule shows only a summary. Check whether the amount changes by destination, age band, activity, medical condition, optional upgrade, or other selection made at purchase.

Common mistakes that lead to surprise out-of-pocket costs
- Assuming the deductible is charged only once when the wording applies it per person, claim, or section.
- Subtracting the deductible from the trip’s total cost instead of from the eligible covered amount.
- Ignoring a benefit limit or a lower sublimit for a particular item.
- Expecting the insurer to cover an excluded reason because the financial loss is large.
- Overlooking approval, notice, receipt, or other evidence requirements.
- Comparing premiums without comparing the corresponding deductibles and coverage limits.
- Treating a U.S. deductible, a UK excess, and a New Zealand excess as interchangeable without reading the local wording.
What to do when a claim calculation looks wrong
- Ask the insurer to identify the exact policy clause used for the deductible, including whether it was applied per person, claim, trip, or section.
- Request the eligible-loss calculation and the limit or sublimit applied after the deductible.
- Compare that explanation with your certificate, schedule, definitions, and general conditions for the policy version you purchased.
- Provide missing receipts, medical records, carrier statements, or other required evidence if the insurer identifies a documentation gap.
- Use the insurer’s internal complaint or appeal process and the relevant financial-services ombudsman or regulator if you still cannot reconcile the decision.
Keep copies of your notice, documents, calculations, and correspondence. A written explanation makes it easier to identify whether the disagreement concerns coverage, the deductible unit, a limit, or evidence.
What the available market data does—and does not—show
The NAIC’s 2026 overview, citing a U.S. Travel Insurance Association market study, reports that Americans spent nearly $5.56 billion on travel-insurance protection during 2022–2024. That figure describes market spending; it does not show a typical deductible or the average effect of a deductible on claim payments.
No published statistic in the cited consumer guidance establishes a standard travel-insurance deductible or an average payout reduction. Treat any “typical deductible” claim cautiously unless it identifies the country, policy type, coverage section, and measurement method.
Bottom line for a real purchase or claim
Read the deductible or excess for the exact benefit you may use, determine whether it applies per person, claim, trip, or section, and then check the benefit limit, sublimit, exclusions, and claim conditions. For the illustrative covered loss of $1,000 with a $100 deductible, $900 remains before other policy adjustments; your actual payment can be lower or zero if the loss is not covered or a policy limit or other term applies. The certificate and full wording—not a generic rule—control the settlement.
