A stock-market “supercycle” is usually a loose label for a very long, structural trend—more precisely called a secular trend—that can last through several rallies, corrections and even shorter bear markets. A bull market normally means one rising phase over a shorter, less clearly specified period. “Supercycle” has no universally accepted definition, so it is best treated as market commentary rather than a formal timing signal.
The short answer: long structural trend versus one rising phase
When commentators call a market move a stock-market supercycle, they generally mean an unusually long period in which the market’s underlying direction is upward. In more established financial writing, the term secular bull market is more common. A secular trend can contain many shorter advances and declines without losing its longer-term character.

A bull market usually describes a rising phase in an asset or index. The exact definition varies by convention: some observers use a percentage gain from a prior low, while others use a sustained pattern of higher highs, improving breadth or stronger economic and earnings conditions. No single threshold settles every use of the term.
The practical distinction is therefore about time horizon and structure. A bull market can be a component of a secular trend. A supercycle claim attempts to describe the larger pattern that may contain that bull market, not merely the latest rally.

What “secular” and “supercycle” mean in stock-market commentary
Secular bull market
“Secular” means a long-term trend. Fidelity describes secular markets as trends that may persist through severe interruptions, while a secular bull market tends to produce a series of higher highs and higher lows over time. A sharp correction, or even a cyclical bear market, does not automatically prove that the secular trend has ended.
That description is not a promise of uninterrupted gains. A long-run advance can include years of disappointing returns, deep drawdowns, recessions, valuation resets and periods when inflation-adjusted prices go nowhere. The label describes an observed or proposed pattern; it does not guarantee the next move.
Stock-market supercycle
“Supercycle” is used inconsistently in equity commentary. The sources considered here do not establish a single standard definition for its length, start date, end date or required price behavior. In this article, the term is used operationally to mean a very long structural or secular trend in stocks.
Do not import the better-defined commodity-supercycle literature into this equity-market question. Commodity analysts often discuss supply, demand and investment cycles with their own terminology and historical assumptions. Those assumptions do not create a fixed periodicity for stock markets.

Cyclical bull and bear phases
Cyclical phases are shorter movements nested inside a longer trend. A cyclical bull can lift prices sharply during a secular bear market, and a cyclical bear can interrupt a secular bull market. The size of a decline matters to investors, but its occurrence alone does not decide whether the longer trend has ended.
Supercycle versus bull market: the distinctions that matter

How a long trend can survive a major decline
The 1982–2000 U.S. period illustrates why the two labels should not be treated as synonyms. Fidelity identifies July 1982 through August 2000 as one of its three selected secular bull markets. During that period, the S&P 500 suffered a 1987 downturn that Fidelity characterized as a 33% decline (Fidelity, 2025).
The market subsequently recovered and reached new highs. Jurrien Timmer, director of global macro in Fidelity’s Global Asset Allocation Division, recalled: “I remember clearly that many people were bracing for a depression, which of course never happened.” He added that “a year or two later, the market was making new highs,” and that the advance continued for roughly another decade until the 2000 peak.
The lesson is not that every 30%-plus decline is temporary. It is that a severe cyclical interruption does not, by itself, resolve the question of whether a secular trend remains intact. Investors judging a proposed supercycle must examine the index, inflation adjustment, earnings and economic context—not just the most recent drawdown.

Why historical dates differ between reputable analyses
There is no universally agreed calendar of stock-market supercycles. Periodization is an analytical choice. Two respected sources illustrate the issue without producing identical timelines.
Brookings’ postwar real-price account
A 2004 Brookings paper by John Geanakoplos, Martine Quinzii and Michael Magill describes broad postwar movements in real U.S. stock prices. Its narrative includes a 1945–1966 bull period, a subsequent bear period spanning the 1970s and early 1980s, and a bull market in the middle and late 1980s and 1990s.
The paper also discusses a 50% fall in the S&P index in real terms between 1966 and 1978, citing the earlier Modigliani–Cohn argument. That is a figure reported in the 2004 Brookings discussion, not an independently recomputed estimate here. “Real” means adjusted for inflation, which can produce different turning points from a chart of nominal prices.

Fidelity’s simplified secular-bull selection
Fidelity’s Capital Markets Strategy Group selects three periods under its simplified definition: June 1949–December 1968, July 1982–August 2000 and April 2013 to the present in a May 2026 note. Fidelity explicitly says, “There is no consensus on the beginning and end dates of past bull markets.”

These dates are Fidelity’s classification, not an industry-wide standard. The selected index, whether prices are nominal or inflation-adjusted, and the rule used to mark a beginning or end can all change the result. A chart that starts in one month rather than another can make a trend appear longer or shorter without changing the underlying market history.
What can be said about the possible current cycle?
Fidelity’s May 2026 document presents April 2013 to the present as one possible secular-bull period. It also cautions that its illustrative comparison cannot establish that the bull market is still intact or that the index will rise significantly. That combination—an analytical possibility paired with an explicit limitation—is the appropriate way to read current supercycle claims.
Other outlooks are separate opinions, not consensus. Morgan Stanley’s 2026 outlook offers a bullish view while acknowledging that stocks can decline and that the timing and effects of events are difficult to predict. A strategist’s “we are still in a supercycle” statement should therefore be dated and attributed, rather than presented as an objective classification.

- Corporate profits: weakening earnings momentum can challenge an optimistic valuation narrative.
- Credit spreads: widening spreads may signal that lenders are demanding more compensation for risk.
- Implied volatility: changes in option-implied volatility can reveal shifts in demand for protection.
CME’s discussion says current evidence is mixed. These measures are examples of what analysts monitor, not a validated checklist that reliably calls a top. Each indicator can move for multiple reasons, and markets can continue rising after an apparently worrying signal.
Why supercycles are difficult to use as a timing system
The boundaries are known only after interpretation
Because analysts disagree about start and end dates, a supercycle can look obvious in hindsight and ambiguous in real time. Choosing a different index, currency, inflation adjustment or dividend treatment can change the apparent turning points.
Secular and cyclical forces overlap
CFA Institute’s 2026 capital-market expectations reading explains that business-cycle phases differ in length and amplitude, and that cyclical and secular forces are not always easy to distinguish. It states: “Information about the current cyclical state of the economy has no predictive value over very long horizons.” The statement concerns business-cycle information over horizons spanning multiple phases; it does not mean every form of market analysis is useless.
Long horizons contain multiple risks
A long holding period can include recessions, policy changes, wars, technology shifts, demographic changes, valuation bubbles and changes in the composition of an index. Calling the period a supercycle does not remove those risks or determine an individual investor’s allocation, liquidity needs or tolerance for loss.
A disciplined way to evaluate a supercycle claim
- Ask which market is being measured. Identify the country, index, currency and whether the series includes dividends.
- Check the price convention. Determine whether the claim uses nominal prices or inflation-adjusted real returns.
- Find the proposed start and end dates. If none are supplied, the label is too vague to test.
- Look for the rule behind the dates. Is the analyst using a prior low, a valuation regime, earnings trends or a visual chart?
- Separate description from forecast. A historical secular classification does not prove that the next decade will resemble the last one.
- Stress-test the interruption. Ask whether the argument allows for corrections, recessions and bear markets inside the proposed trend.
- Read the caveats. A credible source should state what its chart cannot establish, as Fidelity does in its May 2026 note.
Common misunderstandings
- “Supercycle” does not mean prices rise every year. Long trends can contain substantial losses and long sideways periods.
- A 10% correction does not automatically end a secular bull. Fidelity says investors in its two earlier selected secular bulls experienced more than a dozen pullbacks of 10% or more (Fidelity Investments, 2026).
- A bear market does not automatically prove a secular bull is over. The answer depends on the chosen framework and subsequent higher highs and lows.
- There is no reliable average duration established here. The reviewed authorities do not support a predictable number of years for a stock-market supercycle.
- Historical labels are not personal investment instructions. Risk capacity, time horizon, diversification and cash needs matter more to an individual decision than a commentator’s cycle name.
What the label can—and cannot—tell you
Used carefully, “supercycle” communicates that an analyst believes a market’s forces are structural and may operate over many years. It encourages readers to look beyond the latest rally or correction and to examine earnings, valuations, inflation, productivity, demographics and policy over a longer horizon.
Used carelessly, it creates false precision. The word does not supply a standard duration, a dependable peak date or a guarantee that a current rally will continue. The more defensible formulation is usually: “This analyst classifies the period as a possible secular bull market under a stated method.” That wording preserves the useful context while acknowledging that the classification is provisional.
