What Is a Crypto Spring? How Cryptocurrency Market-Cycle Phases Work

A crypto spring is Morgan Stanley’s name for the period after Bitcoin reaches a post-peak trough and before the next Bitcoin halving. It describes a recovery and re-accumulation interval: the previous bear-market decline has produced a low, price begins to stabilize, and long-term participants may gradually rebuild positions before a new cycle develops.

The term is a market-cycle framework, not a calendar date or a promise that prices will rise. To use it sensibly, place it alongside the four broad phases often used in Wyckoff-style analysis—accumulation, markup, distribution and markdown—and treat the boundaries as uncertain until later evidence makes them clearer.

What “crypto spring” means

Morgan Stanley’s Four Seasons framework calls the interval between the latest Bitcoin trough and the next halving “crypto spring.” In its wording, this is the historical price-momentum period “between the latest trough and the next halving event, starting the cycle anew.” The label is intended to describe market behavior after a severe decline, not to identify a guaranteed investment opportunity.

In practical terms, a spring often begins when a sell-off has exhausted itself and Bitcoin enters a broad, uneven trading range. Prices may stop making persistent lower lows, forced selling eases, and investors who can tolerate a long holding period start to accumulate. News coverage and retail attention can remain muted even while the market’s internal balance changes.

The period can include both late accumulation and the first part of a recovery. A chart does not display a sign saying that spring has started, and the eventual low may be revised if another liquidation wave occurs. The label therefore works best as a way to organize conditions and risk, rather than as a signal to buy on a particular day.

How crypto spring fits the four-phase market cycle

A common Wyckoff-style description divides a broad cryptocurrency cycle into four overlapping phases. Crypto.com uses the same sequence. Each phase describes a combination of price direction, trading activity, volatility, sentiment and participant behavior; none has a perfectly clean start or finish.

Phase Typical price behavior Volume and volatility Common sentiment and behavior
Accumulation After a prolonged decline, price stabilizes and moves sideways within a range. Attention and volume are often subdued, although sharp tests of the range can occur. Longer-term participants build positions gradually while many former holders remain cautious.
Markup Price breaks above the prior range and establishes a sustained upward trend. Participation and volume generally increase; volatility can expand in both directions. Confidence returns, more buyers notice the move, and expectations become increasingly optimistic.
Distribution Price remains elevated but stops advancing consistently, with repeated failed breakouts possible. Activity and volatility can stay high while progress stalls. Earlier buyers sell into optimism; investors may interpret every pullback as a buying opportunity.
Markdown Price breaks down from the distribution range and trends lower. Selling can accelerate, leverage may unwind, and volatility often rises. Defensive sentiment replaces enthusiasm; capitulation can help form the eventual trough.

Real markets do not move through these stages in neat textbook order. A failed breakout can return the market to a range, and a sudden macroeconomic shock can shorten or interrupt a phase. BIT Knowledge Hub notes that the stages overlap and are much easier to label after the fact. Crypto.com likewise cautions that pinpointing where a cycle starts or ends is difficult.

Is crypto spring the same as accumulation?

No. The ideas overlap, but they are not identical. Accumulation is a phase in a four-part market-cycle model. Crypto spring is a time interval defined by its position between a post-peak trough and the next Bitcoin halving. Much of spring may look like accumulation, but spring can continue into an early markup if demand strengthens before the halving.

The distinction matters because one term is behavioral and the other is calendar-relative. Accumulation is inferred from the way price trades—usually a quieter range following a decline. Spring is anchored to two reference points: the latest trough and a future halving. You can identify an accumulation-like range without knowing whether the final low is in, while you cannot determine spring’s complete interval until the trough and the next halving are known.

Neither label proves that a durable bull market has begun. A range can be redistributed to new sellers, and a market that appears to be marking up can fail back into accumulation or markdown.

How the Bitcoin halving affects the cycle

A Bitcoin halving reduces the rate at which new bitcoin is issued to miners. Because it changes the flow of newly created supply, investors often use the event as a reference point when studying recurring market behavior. In Morgan Stanley’s framework, the halving is the endpoint that separates one spring interval from the next cycle’s starting phase.

The halving is an influence and timing marker, not a mechanical trigger. It does not force buyers to enter, guarantee a rally, or determine the exact date of a market bottom. Price can rise before the event, remain weak afterward, or be dominated by liquidity, regulation, interest rates, miner economics and other factors. A historical relationship can inform a scenario without establishing a reliable cause-and-effect rule.

For that reason, treat a halving chart as context. Combine it with evidence from price structure, volume, volatility and investor positioning instead of assuming that a countdown supplies a trading signal.

How long does crypto spring last?

Morgan Stanley’s 2024-era Four Seasons research reports that crypto spring averaged 17 months. The same research reports that crypto summer—the stronger upward portion that follows spring in its seasonal framing—averaged about five months. Crypto.com says a complete crypto market cycle lasts four years on average.

These are historical averages, not a schedule for the next cycle. An average compresses different observations into one number and cannot tell you whether a particular trough is final, how long a range will last, or when a markup will end. The four-year figure also describes a broad cycle, not a fixed four-year appointment on a calendar.

When comparing a current chart with historical examples, preserve the definitions. “Spring” runs from a trough to the next halving in Morgan Stanley’s framework, whereas a four-phase chart labels behavior by what price and participants are doing. The two clocks can overlap without matching day for day.

What to watch in each phase

Five observable axes help you assess whether market conditions resemble accumulation, markup, distribution or markdown. No single axis is decisive; the value comes from looking for a consistent combination.

Axis Accumulation-like conditions Markup-like conditions Distribution or markdown warning
Price direction Decline has slowed; price holds a broad range and recovers from tests. Higher highs and higher lows persist above the former range. Repeated failures at resistance, then lower highs and a break below support.
Volume Often quiet overall, with occasional heavy activity at support or during shakeouts. Participation expands on advances and more market participants become active. Heavy selling on failed rallies or a surge in liquidation volume during breakdowns.
Volatility Can contract between sharp, confusing range tests. Expands as the trend attracts new participants. Remains elevated while direction becomes unstable or persistently negative.
Sentiment Disbelief, fatigue and low attention are common. Confidence and media attention return. Optimism remains excessive near a top, then shifts toward fear.
Participant behavior Patient buyers add gradually; forced sellers become less dominant. Trend followers and new entrants buy breakouts and pullbacks. Earlier holders distribute; leveraged traders may be forced to close positions.

These descriptions are probabilistic. A one-day volume spike or a single breakout cannot establish a phase. Use a timeframe that matches your objective, and remember that a chart pattern on a weekly view may look different on an hourly view.

How to distinguish accumulation from an emerging bull run

The hardest decision is usually made inside the range: is the market quietly rebuilding, or has a durable markup already begun? There is no real-time test that settles this with certainty, but a disciplined checklist reduces overconfidence.

Signs that still fit accumulation

  • Price continues to trade inside a well-defined range after a major decline.
  • Breakouts fail quickly and return to the range rather than producing successive higher highs.
  • Attention and participation remain uneven, with activity concentrated around support tests.
  • Negative news still produces sharp reactions, showing that conviction has not fully recovered.
  • Any rally depends on a few sessions rather than a sustained sequence of higher highs and higher lows.

Signs that markup may be developing

  • Price clears the former range and holds that area as support on later pullbacks.
  • Advances persist across multiple timeframes instead of being one short-lived spike.
  • Volume and participation broaden as the move continues.
  • Pullbacks become shallower or shorter while buyers respond before the old low is threatened.
  • Market attention returns without the price immediately failing back into the prior range.

These observations do not identify a perfect entry point. They help you update a working hypothesis as new data arrives. A confirmation-oriented investor may wait for a breakout and successful retest; a range-oriented investor may focus on position size and the possibility that support fails. Both approaches must account for the risk of being wrong.

How to use the framework without treating it as a prediction

  1. Define the question. Decide whether you are studying a long-term allocation, a swing trade, or simply the historical cycle. The appropriate chart timeframe and risk limit depend on that purpose.
  2. Mark the evidence. Record major lows, range boundaries, breakouts, failed breakouts, volume changes and volatility shifts. Keep observations separate from interpretations.
  3. Build competing scenarios. Write down what would support accumulation, what would support markup, and what would invalidate each view. Include a renewed markdown scenario even when sentiment is improving.
  4. Set exposure rules before acting. Determine how much capital can be lost, whether leverage is appropriate, and where you would reduce or exit a position if the structure fails.
  5. Review on a schedule. Reassess after meaningful weekly or monthly evidence rather than reacting to every headline. A phase label should change when the behavior changes, not merely because a prediction was wrong.

This process turns the cycle model into a risk-management aid. It does not make an asset’s valuation knowable, remove the possibility of a total loss, or replace research into custody, liquidity, taxes and personal financial capacity.

Common mistakes about crypto spring

Assuming the trough is obvious in real time

A low is often confirmed only after price has moved away from it. Calling an early rebound “the bottom” can encourage excessive size just before another sell-off. Use conditional language—such as “the market is behaving like accumulation”—until subsequent structure provides stronger evidence.

Treating the halving as an automatic buy signal

The halving changes issuance, but market prices reflect expectations and many other forces. A scheduled event cannot guarantee a specific return or prevent a drawdown.

Confusing a rally with markup

Markup requires sustained progress and participation, not merely a large green candle. Failed breakouts and reversals are common while a range is still being resolved.

Using historical averages as deadlines

Seventeen months, five months and four years describe past averages under particular definitions. They should not be used as expiration dates for a thesis or as justification for leverage.

Ignoring the rest of a household’s finances

Cycle analysis cannot compensate for an emergency fund shortfall, expensive debt, unsuitable custody arrangements or an allocation that is too large for your risk tolerance. A market phase is one input into a financial decision, not the decision itself.

A practical reading of the current chart

If a chart has fallen from a prolonged high, stabilized and begun moving sideways, the cautious description is “post-decline accumulation-like behavior.” If it then breaks above the range and repeatedly holds that former ceiling, “early markup” becomes a reasonable working description. If advances stall at elevated levels while optimism remains intense, watch for distribution characteristics. A decisive break from that area with persistent selling would fit markdown more closely.

Notice the wording: these are descriptions of observed behavior, not forecasts. The same price series can be labeled differently by analysts using different timeframes or choosing different range boundaries. Record the evidence that led to a label so you can revise it when the market invalidates it.

Why phase labels remain useful despite uncertainty

The framework’s value is organizational. It prompts you to ask whether price is recovering from a decline, attracting new demand, losing momentum at high levels, or undergoing forced selling. It also discourages the common mistake of viewing every upward move as a new bull market or every dip as a buying opportunity.

Its limits are equally important. Phase boundaries are noisy, stages can overlap, external shocks can interrupt the sequence, and the most confident labels are often assigned with hindsight. Used with explicit scenarios and position limits, the model can improve a market diary and risk discussion. Used as a precise timing system, it can create false certainty.
