A Bitcoin impairment charge is a non-cash accounting loss. Under the former U.S. GAAP model, a company reduced profit when Bitcoin’s fair value fell below the amount at which it was carried on the balance sheet. The same entry reduced the reported Bitcoin balance, even if the company did not sell a single coin. Because the old model did not allow a later reversal, a price recovery could leave reported earnings below the economic value of the holdings.
For annual periods beginning after December 15, 2024, Accounting Standards Update (ASU) 2023-08 generally replaces that one-way impairment model for qualifying crypto assets with fair-value accounting. Companies now recognize both unrealized increases and decreases in net income each reporting period. This explanation is U.S.-GAAP focused; IFRS treatment and tax results can differ.

What a Bitcoin impairment charge means
In accounting, impairment means that an asset’s recorded carrying amount is higher than the amount the company currently expects the asset to be worth under the applicable measurement rules. Before ASU 2023-08, qualifying Bitcoin holdings were generally treated under U.S. GAAP as indefinite-lived intangible assets. They were not remeasured upward whenever the market price rose.

The old rule was asymmetric: declines were recognized, but subsequent increases could not reverse an impairment loss. That asymmetry is why a company could report a large Bitcoin-related loss in one period and still hold coins whose market value later recovered.
How the former U.S.-GAAP model worked
When the test occurred
Qualifying holdings were tested at least annually and more often when an impairment indicator existed. A sustained or significant decline in Bitcoin’s market value could prompt an additional test before the normal annual date.
How the amount was calculated
The basic comparison was:
Impairment loss = carrying amount − fair value
That formula applies when carrying amount is greater than fair value. Carrying amount was the amount remaining on the books after prior impairment entries. Fair value reflected the market-based value used for the reporting date and relevant market.
What the journal entry did
The company recorded an expense (or loss line) and reduced the asset balance by the same amount. Pre-tax income fell by the recorded loss. Net income generally fell as well, although the final after-tax effect depended on the company’s tax accounting and whether the loss was deductible.
| Feature | Former impairment model | ASU 2023-08 fair-value model |
|---|---|---|
| Measurement | Indefinite-lived intangible asset subject to impairment | Fair value measured each reporting period for qualifying crypto assets |
| Downward price movement | Recognized when fair value fell below carrying amount | Recognized as an unrealized loss in net income |
| Upward price movement after a loss | Could not reverse a recorded impairment | Recognized as an unrealized gain in net income |
| Effect on asset balance | Carrying amount was written down | Balance is remeasured to fair value |
| Cash requirement | None for the impairment entry | None for an unrealized remeasurement entry |
Does Bitcoin impairment reduce profit?
Yes. Under the former model, the impairment loss reduced reported operating or non-operating income, depending on where the company presented it, and therefore reduced pre-tax profit. After-tax profit depended on tax effects. The reduction was accounting profit, not cash paid out at the time of the write-down.

Consider a clearly illustrative example. Suppose a company carried Bitcoin at $100 million and fair value at the test date was $70 million. The company would record a $30 million impairment loss and reduce the Bitcoin balance to $70 million. If the market later rose to $110 million, the old model still left the carrying amount at $70 million; the $40 million recovery could not be recorded as an impairment reversal. A later sale could produce a gain based on the $70 million carrying amount, but that is a separate transaction and period.
This accounting outcome can make earnings appear more volatile than the company’s cash position. A large impairment charge can coexist with unchanged Bitcoin units, no borrowing, and no sale proceeds. Analysts therefore need to distinguish the income statement effect from the company’s liquidity and investment strategy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy a company can report a loss without selling Bitcoin
An impairment charge is an accounting entry. It does not itself transfer cash, move Bitcoin between wallets, or change the number of units owned. Cash flow occurs when the company buys, sells, lends, pledges, or otherwise transacts in Bitcoin.
That distinction explains a common filing pattern: the income statement shows a Bitcoin-related loss, while the cash-flow statement does not show a matching cash payment and the digital-asset note shows the same unit count. The non-cash loss may still affect cash-flow reporting indirectly because companies reconcile net income to operating cash flow and remove non-cash items in that reconciliation.
A purchase is different. Buying Bitcoin uses cash and creates the asset. Selling Bitcoin creates cash and may produce a realized gain or loss based on the accounting carrying amount. Neither event should be confused with an impairment entry or an unrealized fair-value change.

What changed under ASU 2023-08
Fair value each reporting period
ASU 2023-08 requires qualifying crypto assets to be measured at fair value in the statement of financial position each reporting period. Changes from that remeasurement go to net income. A period-end decline therefore creates an unrealized loss, while a period-end increase creates an unrealized gain.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Effective date and early adoption
The standard is effective for annual periods beginning after December 15, 2024, including interim periods within those fiscal years. Early adoption is permitted. The exact transition presentation and first-period results depend on the company’s fiscal year and adoption decision, so two companies reporting in the same calendar quarter may not be directly comparable if one adopted earlier.
What “qualifying” means
The fair-value requirement applies to crypto assets that meet the standard’s qualifying scope. A company’s accounting policy and the characteristics of the asset determine whether the model applies. Holdings that fall outside the scope can remain subject to other U.S.-GAAP guidance.
How the new profit pattern differs
Under the new model, the income statement follows the period-end market value rather than waiting for a sale or recognizing only permanent-looking declines. A company can record a gain even while retaining every Bitcoin unit, and it can record a loss when the market falls without selling. This removes the old prohibition on reversing a prior write-down because upward and downward movements are both recognized through current-period earnings.
“It will provide investors and other capital allocators with more relevant information that better reflects the underlying economics of certain crypto assets and an entity’s financial position while reducing cost and complexity associated with applying current accounting.”

How to read a company’s Bitcoin results
When comparing filings, work through the following questions in order:
- Which model is in use? Check whether the company has adopted ASU 2023-08 and identify the fiscal year to which the accounting applies.
- What date and market were used? Fair value is tied to a measurement date and the principal market selected under the company’s accounting policy.
- Where is the change shown? Some companies present crypto gains and losses as a distinct line; others include them in another income-statement line. Read the note and the statement together.
- What is the cost basis? Under the former model, cost basis and the post-impairment carrying amount could differ sharply from current market value. Under fair-value accounting, compare the reported fair value with historical cost to understand the unrealized component.
- Do the unit counts reconcile? Compare beginning units, purchases, sales, transfers and ending units. A loss with an unchanged unit count is consistent with a non-cash remeasurement or impairment entry.
A filing may also describe realized results separately from unrealized changes. Do not add those amounts together unless the company’s presentation and period definitions make them comparable.

ASU 2023-08 expands annual and interim disclosures so readers can connect earnings changes with the digital assets held. For significant holdings, companies disclose the asset’s name, cost basis, fair value and number of units. They also provide aggregate additions and dispositions, gains and losses, and the method used to determine cost basis.

These details answer different questions. Fair value shows the market-based balance at the reporting date. Cost basis indicates how much historical investment remains embedded in the position. Unit counts reveal whether the company changed its exposure through purchases or sales. Additions and dispositions explain activity during the period, while gains and losses explain the earnings effect.

Impairment, fair-value loss and realized loss: three different events
Impairment loss under the former model
This was a write-down from carrying amount to fair value when the former intangible-asset rules required it. It reduced profit and the asset balance, but did not require a sale or cash payment. A later price increase could not reverse the entry.
Unrealized fair-value loss under ASU 2023-08
This is the change in fair value recognized for the reporting period while the company still holds the asset. It reduces net income even though no sale occurred. If fair value rises in a later period, the increase is recognized as a gain rather than being blocked by an old impairment floor.
Realized loss on disposal
This arises when the company sells or otherwise disposes of Bitcoin for less than its carrying amount. It involves a transaction and cash or another form of consideration. The realized result should not be treated as interchangeable with a non-cash impairment or unrealized remeasurement.
Common interpretation mistakes
- Calling the charge a cash expense: The entry itself does not pay anyone. Look for purchases, sales, lending, collateral or other transactions to identify cash movement.
- Assuming every Bitcoin loss is an impairment: Under the new model, a loss may be an ordinary period-end fair-value change rather than a one-way write-down.
- Comparing net income without checking adoption: Companies on different accounting models can report different earnings effects from similar price movements.
- Ignoring presentation location: A crypto gain or loss may be included in a broader income-statement line, so the digital-asset note is essential.
- Treating fair value as a tax result: Book income and taxable income do not necessarily move together. Tax treatment varies by jurisdiction and company circumstances.
- Assuming the rule covers every token: The new guidance applies to qualifying crypto assets; other digital assets may remain under different accounting guidance.
Scope limits for personal readers
The explanation above addresses U.S. GAAP reporting by companies, not an individual’s tax return or investment account. IFRS requirements, local statutory accounting and tax rules can differ. Even among U.S. companies, adoption date, qualifying-asset scope, valuation policy and income-statement presentation can change the reported amount and label.
There is no single market-wide dollar total for Bitcoin impairment charges established by the authoritative guidance. The meaningful number is company-specific: the carrying amount, fair value, units held, accounting model and period shown in that company’s filing.
Practical bottom line
Under the old U.S.-GAAP rules, a Bitcoin impairment charge reduced profit and the balance-sheet value of Bitcoin without requiring a sale, and the loss could not be reversed when prices recovered. For annual periods beginning after December 15, 2024, ASU 2023-08 generally replaces that approach for qualifying crypto assets with recurring fair-value accounting, so both unrealized gains and losses flow through net income. To understand any company’s result, check its adoption date, measurement date, fair value, cost basis, unit rollforward and cash transactions separately.
