Nokia’s current network-equipment investment story is centered on its Network Infrastructure segment, which since January 1, 2026, has comprised Optical Networks, IP Networks and Fixed Networks. In the second quarter of 2026, the segment reported EUR 2.037 billion in net sales, up 12% year over year, with an 8.1% operating margin. Optical Networks and IP Networks grew faster than the segment overall, while Nokia said demand from artificial-intelligence and cloud customers was accelerating.

The opportunity is substantial but not risk-free. Nokia is targeting 12–14% Network Infrastructure sales growth in 2026 and a 13–17% Network Infrastructure operating-margin KPI for 2028. Those are management objectives, not achieved results. Investors must test whether AI-related orders convert into revenue, whether sales growth produces higher margins and cash flow, and whether competition, customer spending cycles, supply constraints and restructuring costs absorb the benefit.

What Nokia’s Network Infrastructure business includes

Nokia reorganized its primary operating segments on January 1, 2026. The two main segments are now Network Infrastructure and Mobile Infrastructure. Network Infrastructure is the business most directly associated with Nokia’s fixed and data-transport equipment:

  • Optical Networks: optical transport systems and data-center interconnect used to move very large volumes of traffic between sites.
  • IP Networks: routers, switches and related data-center and service-provider networking equipment.
  • Fixed Networks: fixed-access systems, including fiber infrastructure used by communications providers.

Nokia sells these systems and associated services to telecommunications operators, cloud and AI companies, and mission-critical enterprises. This is business infrastructure, not a consumer electronics product line. Revenue depends on large projects, multiyear deployments, customer capital budgets, equipment qualification and ongoing support.

Mobile Infrastructure is separate and includes Core Software, Radio Networks and Technology Standards. Nokia reported under a different structure during 2025, so historical comparisons require attention to segment recasts, portfolio changes and the perimeter of each business. A 2026 growth rate should not automatically be compared with an unrecast 2025 segment figure.

How the segment performed in Q2 2026

Nokia’s second-quarter 2026 results, released July 23, 2026, show strong year-over-year growth in the parts of Network Infrastructure most exposed to data-center traffic.

Measure Q2 2026 result Investor interpretation
Network Infrastructure net sales EUR 2.037 billion, up 12% year over year Reported by Nokia for the reorganized segment; compare later periods on a consistent basis.
Network Infrastructure operating profit EUR 166 million Shows that growth was profitable, but the absolute profit level remains below Nokia’s longer-term margin ambition.
Network Infrastructure operating margin 8.1% The quarterly margin to track against the 2028 KPI target of 13–17%.
Optical Networks sales growth 20% year over year Indicates particularly strong momentum in optical transport and interconnect.
IP Networks sales growth 16% year over year Reflects demand in routing, switching and related networking.
AI & Cloud customer sales Up 105% year over year A company-reported customer-category measure, not a separate operating segment.
AI & Cloud order intake EUR 2.8 billion Bookings are not the same as recognized revenue; Nokia expected about half to convert within the following 12 months.

At the group level, Nokia reported Q2 comparable net sales of EUR 4.815 billion, comparable operating profit of EUR 434 million and a comparable operating margin of 9.0%. The group also recorded a reported operating loss of EUR 50 million. Nokia attributed part of the difference between reported and comparable figures to faster restructuring. Investors should therefore keep the segment’s 8.1% margin, the group’s comparable figures and the group’s reported loss in separate analytical columns.

Is Nokia benefiting from AI and data-center spending?

Yes, according to Nokia’s Q2 figures, AI and cloud customers are a major source of current growth. These customers need high-capacity optical links, data-center interconnect, routers and switches to connect clusters, facilities and cloud regions. That demand can raise both equipment volumes and the technical requirements of deployments.

AI & Cloud customer sales more than doubled, increasing 105% year over year in Q2. Nokia reported EUR 2.8 billion of AI & Cloud order intake and said it expected around half of that intake to convert to revenue in the next 12 months. President and CEO Justin Hotard described the quarter this way: “In Q2, our AI & Cloud order intake was EUR 2.8 billion, while sales more than doubled year-on-year.”

Order intake is an indicator of contracted or committed demand, not a guarantee of revenue, margin or cash collection. Conversion can be delayed by customer approvals, site readiness, component availability, engineering work, project changes or cancellations. The key test is whether the order book becomes recognized sales on schedule and at economically attractive margins.

What would confirm a durable AI-related opportunity?

  • AI & Cloud sales continue to grow after the comparison benefit from a smaller prior-year base fades.
  • Optical and IP order intake converts into quarterly revenue without repeated project slippage.
  • Operating margins rise as volume, product mix and manufacturing utilization improve.
  • Capacity additions and component procurement keep pace without creating excessive inventory or cash requirements.
  • Demand broadens beyond a small number of large customers or projects.

A strong order quarter by itself does not establish market share or prove that Nokia will capture a fixed portion of future AI infrastructure spending. The available company disclosures do not provide a current, comparable market-share table for the Network Infrastructure units.

Nokia’s 2026 outlook and longer-term targets

In July 2026, Nokia said it expected Network Infrastructure sales to grow 12–14% for the full year. On a constant-currency and portfolio basis, it expected combined IP and Optical Networks sales growth of 18–20%. Currency and portfolio adjustments matter: reported euro growth can differ from the underlying growth rates used in the outlook.

Management measure Target or outlook How to use it
2026 Network Infrastructure sales growth 12–14% Full-year management outlook; evaluate against actual reported sales after accounting for currency and portfolio effects.
2026 combined IP and Optical Networks growth 18–20% Constant-currency, portfolio-basis outlook; it is not a forecast for Fixed Networks.
2026 Nokia comparable operating profit EUR 2.1–2.6 billion Group-level comparable guidance, not Network Infrastructure operating profit.
2025–2028 Network Infrastructure sales CAGR 6–8% Management’s multiyear target set in November 2025.
2025–2028 combined Optical and IP Networks sales CAGR 10–12% Management target for the two faster-growth businesses.
2028 Network Infrastructure operating-margin KPI 13–17% A future management KPI, not a current margin or guarantee.

Nokia raised the midpoint and range of its 2026 comparable operating-profit guidance from EUR 2.0–2.5 billion to EUR 2.1–2.6 billion. The company characterized the change as a technical revision after Fixed Wireless Access customer-premises equipment and Enterprise Campus Edge were classified as discontinued operations; Nokia said its operational outlook was unchanged. Investors should not interpret the revision as purely incremental business improvement without adjusting for that accounting perimeter change.

Why comparable and reported results can tell different stories

Comparable measures remove or adjust for items that Nokia considers to obscure underlying operating performance. Reported figures follow the applicable accounting presentation. Both matter. Comparable profit can help investors evaluate operating trends, while reported profit and cash flow show the actual financial effects of restructuring, discontinued operations and other charges.

Nokia’s Q2 release included anticipated 2026 restructuring charges of EUR 800 million and restructuring cash outflows of EUR 700–800 million. Those amounts can depress reported earnings and cash generation even when comparable operating profit is within guidance. A complete review should therefore track:

  • Network Infrastructure sales and operating margin on a consistent segment basis.
  • Group comparable operating profit against the EUR 2.1–2.6 billion outlook.
  • Reported operating profit, net income and operating cash flow.
  • The timing and cash cost of restructuring.
  • Capital expenditure, inventory and receivables as AI-related projects scale.

Q3 2026 results were scheduled for October 22, 2026. That update is important because it should provide another observation on order conversion, margins, restructuring spending and the full-year outlook.

The main risks to Nokia’s network-equipment growth

Competition and price erosion

Nokia identifies high competitive intensity, aggressive pricing and price erosion as risks. New competitors, alternative business models and AI-native entrants could pressure prices or shorten product cycles. Company disclosures identify these risks but do not establish that a particular rival is currently outperforming Nokia.

Customer spending and project timing

Telecom operators and cloud customers can delay, resize or cancel deployments when financing conditions, traffic forecasts or return-on-investment expectations change. A large order intake can therefore produce uneven quarterly revenue. Project timing and regional or product mix can also move margins substantially.

Technology and product-roadmap execution

Optical and IP products must remain competitive in capacity, power efficiency, software features, reliability and total cost of ownership. Falling behind a roadmap can result in lost qualifications or lower pricing. Nokia also flags the cost competitiveness of its products as a material consideration.

Supply chain and manufacturing

Component procurement, manufacturing capacity and the breadth of qualified suppliers affect delivery schedules and margins. Disruptions can prevent Nokia from converting orders into revenue, while excess commitments can leave the company with inventory or underused capacity if demand slows.

Macroeconomic, geopolitical and legal exposure

Inflation, currency movements, tariffs and interest rates can affect customer budgets and Nokia’s costs. Geopolitical conflict can disrupt projects, logistics or market access. Patent-license timing and disputes, transaction integration and other legal or execution matters can also change earnings or cash flow.

Restructuring and accounting comparability

Restructuring can improve the cost base over time but creates near-term charges and cash outflows. The 2026 segment reorganization and discontinued-operations classifications make historical comparisons more difficult. Investors should read reconciliations and avoid building a trend line that mixes old and new perimeters.

A practical investor scorecard

Rather than treating one quarter’s sales growth as the whole thesis, investors can review Nokia’s network business through the following sequence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check growth quality: compare Network Infrastructure sales growth with Optical and IP growth, then identify whether Fixed Networks is contributing, flat or declining.
  2. Check conversion: compare AI & Cloud order intake with recognized sales over the next several quarters. Investigate delays instead of assuming all bookings become revenue within Nokia’s expected period.
  3. Check profitability: track the 8.1% Q2 segment margin against subsequent margins and the 13–17% 2028 KPI. Higher sales without margin improvement would weaken the operating-leverage case.
  4. Check cash economics: reconcile comparable profit with reported profit, operating cash flow, capital expenditure, inventory and restructuring payments.
  5. Check accounting consistency: confirm that year-over-year comparisons use the 2026 segment structure and reflect discontinued operations consistently.
  6. Check concentration and execution: look for dependence on a few large AI or cloud projects, component constraints, customer concentration and changes in project schedules.
  7. Check guidance credibility: compare each quarter’s actual sales, margin and cash results with management’s 2026 outlook and its 2025–2028 targets.

What the investment case does—and does not—show

The evidence supports a clear but conditional thesis. Network Infrastructure is growing quickly, particularly in Optical and IP Networks, and Nokia’s AI & Cloud customer sales and order intake show exposure to data-center expansion. The company also has explicit multiyear sales and margin objectives.

It does not yet prove that elevated order intake will translate into sustained, high-margin revenue or superior shareholder returns. The current segment margin is 8.1%, below the 2028 KPI range; restructuring requires significant cash; and competition, customer spending cycles, supply conditions and project execution can all interrupt the path from demand to profit.

For investors, the most informative next data points are Q3 and full-year 2026 revenue conversion, Optical and IP margins, reported cash flow after restructuring, and whether Nokia maintains its outlook without relying on favorable accounting or portfolio changes. Market-share claims should be treated cautiously because a current, comparable cross-unit market-share series is not established by the company disclosures summarized here.
