Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep your Social Security number and bank-account information off your resume and ordinary job applications. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that an employer requesting either before you have even interviewed may be running a job scam. Legitimate employers can need an SSN later for a background check and bank details after hiring for direct deposit, but the timing, purpose, requester and submission channel should all make sense before you disclose anything.
The short answer: protect high-risk identifiers at the application stage
A resume or initial application should contain information needed to evaluate your qualifications, not credentials that could enable identity theft or unauthorized withdrawals. In U.S. hiring, the clearest items to leave out are:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Your Social Security number (SSN). Do not place it on a resume or routine application.
- Your bank account and routing numbers. Do not provide them for an initial application or before you are hired.
- Online-account credentials, payments or unnecessary identity documents. An early request for passwords, one-time codes, money, or scans of identity documents is a reason to stop and verify the opportunity independently.
The FTC’s published warning is direct: “Don’t put your Social Security number or banking information on an application or resume.” That warning does not mean an employer can never request those details. It means the request should occur only for a legitimate, explained hiring purpose through a verified process.
Why timing and purpose matter
The same information can be appropriate at one stage and inappropriate at another. Compare the stage of hiring, the stated purpose, who is requesting the data and where you are being asked to enter it.

| Hiring stage | Information that may be requested | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Initial application or resume | Qualifications, contact details, work history and education relevant to the job | Keep SSNs, bank details, passwords, payments and unnecessary identity documents out. Verify any unusual request before proceeding. |
| Interview or authorized background-check process | An SSN may be needed to identify you accurately for a background report | Confirm the employer and screening provider. Read the required notices and give written permission when the process is covered by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). |
| After hiring or onboarding | Bank-account and routing information for direct deposit may be requested | Provide it only through the employer’s verified payroll or human-resources system, after you have accepted a genuine job. |
| Federal hiring | A hiring agency may request an SSN during an application process to distinguish applicants with similar names | Follow the agency’s official instructions. USAJOBS says its portal does not request or retain the SSN; verify that you are dealing with the real agency process. |
An early request is a warning sign, not conclusive proof of fraud. A real employer could use an outside screening company or have a legitimate agency-specific procedure. You should still pause, ask why the information is needed now, and verify the request using contact information you locate yourself.
Information to keep out of your resume and ordinary application
Social Security number
Your SSN is a high-risk identifier that can be misused for identity theft. It is not needed to judge your skills, employment history or education, so it should not appear on a resume, cover letter or ordinary online application. Be especially cautious when a recruiter asks for it before an interview or sends you to an unfamiliar form.
A legitimate employer may request an SSN later to conduct a background check. Before entering it, confirm the job independently, identify the company or screening provider receiving it, and make sure the process explains the required disclosures and permissions. Never send an SSN merely because a message says it is needed to “reserve” an interview, activate a portal or process an application fee.

Bank account and routing numbers
Bank information is normally associated with payroll, not candidate evaluation. The FTC identifies post-hire direct deposit as a context in which an employer may request it. An application that asks for account and routing numbers before you have been hired reverses that normal order and should be treated as suspicious until verified.

Do not put a voided check, debit-card number, online-banking login or account password in a resume upload. If you accept a job, enter payroll information only in a verified human-resources or payroll system, and confirm the employer’s instructions through an independently found phone number or website.
Passwords, one-time codes and payments
A hiring process should not require your email password, banking password, authentication code or payment to obtain an interview. Requests for gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, “equipment deposits” or other payments are not ordinary application requirements. Stop communicating through the supplied link or number and verify the employer through an official channel you find independently.
Identity documents and highly detailed personal records
Some employers may need identity or work-authorization documents after an offer, under the applicable employment-verification process. That possibility does not make every early request safe. A recruiter who demands a passport, driver’s-license image or other identity document before explaining the job, employer and secure process is asking for information that can be abused. Ask what legal or onboarding purpose requires it, who will retain it, and how it will be protected. If the answer is vague, do not submit it.

The reviewed federal guidance does not establish a universal list saying that every address, telephone number, work-history detail or education record is unsafe. The practical test is necessity: is the information needed for this hiring step, is the request expected, and is the recipient authentic?

Use a professional email address and provide a phone number you monitor. You can usually omit a full street address if a city and state are enough for the employer to understand your location. Do not volunteer unrelated family, medical, financial or lifestyle details simply because an application form has an open text box.
Questions about race, sex, age, religion and other protected characteristics
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) advises that pre-employment information should generally be limited to what is essential for deciding whether a candidate is qualified. Its guidance identifies race, sex, national origin, age and religion as generally irrelevant to qualification decisions and cautions employers against questions that reveal protected characteristics without a business justification.
Federal protections cover race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age 40 or older, disability and genetic information. Employers may not make decisions based on stereotypes or assumptions about these traits. That does not mean every question touching on a protected characteristic is automatically illegal; the legal analysis depends on the wording, the job, the employer and the jurisdiction. Voluntary demographic questions used for equal-employment monitoring can have a different purpose from questions a hiring manager uses to decide whether to interview you.
If a question seems unrelated to the job, ask how the answer will be used and whether it is optional. You can also state that you would prefer to discuss your ability to perform the essential duties. Keep a copy of the question and your response if you later need to explain what happened.

Financial-history questions require context
Federal EEO law does not categorically prohibit an employer from asking about financial information. The EEOC says discriminatory use is prohibited, and a financial requirement may be problematic when it is not useful for identifying responsible and reliable employees and significantly disadvantages a protected group. State and local laws may impose additional restrictions, so the rules can differ by location and job.
Do not confuse a question about financial history with a request for your bank credentials. An employer asking about bankruptcy or credit history may have a stated screening purpose; an employer asking for your online-banking login or money has no ordinary hiring justification. Ask whether a formal, authorized report is being used, what notice you will receive, and how to dispute inaccurate information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens during a legitimate background check
When an employer obtains a background report through a reporting company, FCRA procedures apply. The employer must tell you in writing that it may use a report and obtain your written permission, along with other required notices. Background information remains subject to nondiscrimination laws.

- Confirm the employer, job and screening company independently rather than relying only on a recruiter-provided link.
- Read the written disclosure describing the possible report.
- Give written authorization only when you understand who will receive the report and why.
- Review any notice about adverse action or your rights if the employer may reject you based on the report.
- Use the dispute procedures described by the FTC and EEOC if information is inaccurate or incomplete.
State and local requirements can add protections. A request for an SSN during a genuine, documented background-check process is materially different from an SSN request on an unsolicited application form.

Federal applications: the USAJOBS distinction
Federal hiring can follow a different process. USAJOBS explains that a hiring agency may request an SSN during the application process to distinguish applicants with similar names, while the USAJOBS portal itself says it does not request or retain the SSN. Follow the instructions displayed by the official hiring agency and verify that you are using the genuine federal application process, not a look-alike site or a message that redirects you elsewhere.
Do not assume that the federal context makes every request legitimate. Check the agency’s official contact information, confirm the vacancy appears through the recognized government process, and ask the agency how the number will be used if the instructions are unclear.
How to respond to an unusually early request
If an application, recruiter or purported employer asks for an SSN, bank information, identity document, payment or account credential before the request makes sense, stop before submitting it.

Save the message, form address and any job-posting details for your records.
- Find the employer independently. Type the company’s official web address yourself or use a reliable public directory. Do not use only the phone number, email address or link in the suspicious message.
- Confirm the vacancy. Check that the job is posted on the employer’s own career page and that the recruiter is associated with the organization.
- Ask precise questions. Why is the information needed now? Who will receive it? Is a background-check company involved? How will it be protected and how long retained?
- Verify the submission channel. Prefer the employer’s established, secure application or payroll portal. Treat an unfamiliar form, personal email account, text-message link or file-sharing request as unverified until the employer confirms it.
- Use a safe alternative. Offer to provide an SSN through the official screening process after the interview, or bank details through verified payroll after hire.
- Walk away when the explanation fails. Pressure, threats that you will lose the job, secrecy demands or requests for money are strong reasons not to continue.
The FTC’s published warning specifically highlights SSNs and banking information requested before an interview. Other early requests should receive the same careful pause because they can expose you to identity theft or account takeover.
If you already submitted sensitive information
Stop sending additional information and preserve the messages, application pages, payment instructions and names used by the requester. Contact your bank immediately if you shared account details or sent money, and ask what protective steps are available. If you disclosed an SSN or identity document, monitor accounts and credit activity and follow the identity-protection guidance available from the FTC. Report suspected job fraud to the appropriate authorities, including the FTC, and notify the real employer if an impersonator used its name.
Do not continue negotiating with a scammer in the hope of recovering a fee or obtaining the promised job. The priority is limiting further disclosure, securing accounts and documenting what happened.
A practical checklist before you click “Submit”
- Does the application ask only for information needed to assess your qualifications?
- Have you left your SSN and bank-account information off the resume and initial form?
- Is the employer and recruiter independently verified?
- Is the job posted on the employer’s genuine career page?
- Is the submission channel an official, secure portal rather than an unsolicited link?
- Has the requester explained the purpose, recipient and timing of any sensitive data?
- If a background report is involved, did you receive the required written disclosure and permission request?
- If the job is federal, did you confirm whether the hiring agency—not the USAJOBS portal—is requesting an SSN?
- Have you avoided unnecessary answers about protected characteristics or unrelated personal matters?
For U.S. applicants, the safest rule is simple: keep high-risk identifiers out of ordinary application materials, and disclose them only when a verified employer or agency has a legitimate, clearly explained reason at the appropriate stage.
