Missing a life insurance premium due date usually does not cancel coverage that same day. Most policies provide a grace period, but the length depends on the policy, payment schedule, insurer and governing jurisdiction. If the premium remains unpaid after that period, the policy can lapse and the death benefit may no longer be in force.
Act quickly: check the policy for its exact deadline, contact the insurer to confirm whether coverage is active, and ask what is required to prevent or reverse a lapse. Reinstatement may require overdue premiums, interest, health information or a medical exam, and it can create a new contestable period.

What happens immediately after a missed payment?
A missed due date starts a period in which the insurer may still accept the premium without treating the policy as permanently terminated. That period is called the grace period. Its length is not universal, so the date printed in a general article cannot replace the date in your contract.
Texas Department of Insurance consumer guidance says most policies have a 31-day grace period. That is a common U.S. example, not a nationwide promise. Payment frequency can change the result. Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC India), for example, describes at least 30 days for annual, half-yearly and quarterly modes, but 15 days for monthly payments. Those figures apply to the policy conditions described by LIC India and should not be treated as an international standard.

During an applicable grace period, coverage may continue. Texas guidance says that if the insured dies during the grace period, the insurer pays the death benefit less the overdue premium. Other contracts and jurisdictions may use different language, so confirm the treatment with the insurer.
When does a policy lapse?
If the premium is not paid by the end of the applicable grace period, the policy can lapse. The Texas Department of Insurance states: “If you don’t pay the premium within the grace period, your policy will lapse.” Massachusetts consumer material likewise warns that nonpayment within the grace period can cause a lapse.
A lapse generally means the policy’s death-benefit protection is no longer in force. The practical risk is not merely an administrative status change: a claim arising after the lapse may not receive the coverage your beneficiaries expect. Do not assume that a bank account showing an attempted debit, a mailed check or a late online payment means the insurer has posted the premium.
What a lapse does not tell you
The word “lapse” does not by itself tell you whether reinstatement is still available, whether an automatic premium provision paid the amount, or what sum is now due. Those answers come from the policy and the insurer’s records. Ask for the effective lapse date, the amount needed, and the exact process for restoring coverage.

Find the actual deadline in your policy
Look at the declarations page, billing notices and policy provisions. Identify:
- The premium due date and payment frequency.
- The grace-period wording and the date it ends for the missed installment.
- Any automatic premium loan or other automatic-payment provision.
- Nonforfeiture provisions that may apply to a permanent policy.
- The insurer’s address, telephone number and servicing-agent contact.
Use the contract’s language rather than relying on a 31-day assumption. The governing law may depend on where the policy was issued or delivered, and the payment mode can matter. A statute or consumer page found online may also show a future effective date; for example, a Washington statute page cited in consumer materials includes text marked effective January 1, 2027. That text should not be described as law already in force before that date.
What to do while the policy is still in its grace period
- Call the insurer or servicing agent immediately. Ask whether the policy is active, the precise date the grace period ends, and the exact amount required to keep it in force.
- Make the payment through an approved channel. Follow the insurer’s instructions for online payment, telephone payment, electronic transfer or check. Keep the confirmation number, receipt, mailing record and bank statement.
- Confirm that the payment posted. A draft attempt or mailed check is not proof that the insurer credited the premium. Ask the insurer to trace a payment that has not appeared.
- Request written confirmation. Ask for an email, letter or secure-message record showing the policy status and the payment’s effective date.
- Ask about any reduced benefit during the grace period. Texas guidance describes a death benefit reduced by the past-due premium; your contract may use different terms.
What changes after the grace period?
Once the grace period has expired without payment, the insurer may record a lapse and stop ordinary coverage. The insurer may send a lapse notice, but you should not wait for one before making contact. A notice can arrive after the contractual deadline, and the insurer’s system may already show a different status.

- Whether the policy is active, in a grace period or lapsed.
- The exact date and time of any lapse.
- The amount required to restore the policy.
- Whether interest, fees or additional premiums are included.
- Whether an application, health questionnaire or medical examination is required.
- Whether coverage resumes immediately upon approval or only on a later effective date.
Do not presume that paying one missed installment automatically restores the contract. After a lapse, the insurer may require a formal reinstatement process.

How reinstatement works
Reinstatement is the insurer’s process for bringing a lapsed policy back into force under the conditions stated in the contract. It is conditional, not automatic.
Typical requirements
Depending on the policy and insurer, reinstatement can require:
- All overdue premiums.
- Interest on the overdue amounts.
- A completed reinstatement application.
- Answers to health or medical questions.
- Evidence of continued insurability.
- A medical examination.
Texas consumer guidance describes five years as a period within which most companies will reinstate, subject to requirements. That is a Texas example, not a universal deadline. A different policy may allow a shorter period or impose different conditions. Ask for the reinstatement deadline printed in your contract and obtain the application promptly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSteps to request reinstatement
- Request the official application. Use the insurer’s form rather than sending an informal letter or only a payment.
- Ask for a complete dollar figure. Obtain the overdue premiums, interest and any other amount required as of a specific date.
- Answer health questions accurately. If evidence of insurability is requested, ask whether an examination is required and who schedules it.
- Submit every required item together where possible. Missing medical information or a partial payment can delay review.
- Obtain the approval and effective date in writing. Coverage may not resume merely because the application was mailed or money was received.
Reinstatement can create a new contestable period
Reinstatement may change more than the payment status. Texas guidance says a reinstated policy has a new contestable period. The same guidance describes two years as the policy’s contestable period in its example. Ask the insurer which provisions and review periods apply after reinstatement, when the new period begins, and whether the reinstated contract differs in any other way from the original status.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if the policy has cash value?
Some permanent life insurance policies include cash-value or automatic-premium provisions. Florida consumer guidance explains that an insurer may borrow from cash value to pay a premium. This is not an automatic feature of every policy.
Ask the insurer whether a premium loan or another automatic provision was used for the missed payment. Request the current policy debt, interest rate, cash value, available surrender value and death-benefit effect. A loan or other advance can change the policy’s values and the amount ultimately payable; the insurer should explain the figures for your specific contract.
If no automatic provision applies, the policy can still lapse after the grace period. Cash value does not by itself prove that coverage remains active.

How payment method affects the outcome
A failed payment can have several causes: an expired card, an incorrect bank account, a returned electronic transfer or a check that was never delivered. Treat the payment record and the policy record as separate questions.
- Save the date, amount and confirmation number for an online payment.
- For an electronic draft, ask the insurer whether the transaction was submitted, rejected or posted.
- For a check, retain the copy, mailing proof and bank-clearing record.
- If a third-party agent collected the payment, ask both the agent and insurer when the premium was received and credited.
If the insurer cannot locate a payment, request a trace and continue asking about the policy status. Do not let a payment dispute cause you to miss a reinstatement deadline.
Why exact rules vary
The answer depends on several comparison points:
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Jurisdiction and governing law | State or national rules can set minimum terms or affect reinstatement and notice requirements. |
| Policy type | Term, whole-life and flexible-premium contracts can contain different lapse, cash-value and automatic-payment provisions. |
| Payment frequency | Monthly, quarterly, semiannual and annual schedules may have different grace-period wording. |
| Contract language | The policy defines the due date, grace period, lapse date and available nonforfeiture options. |
| Automatic provisions | A premium loan or similar feature may pay an amount from policy value instead of allowing an immediate lapse. |
| Reinstatement terms | The contract controls the deadline, money due, insurability evidence and any examination. |
| Post-reinstatement rules | A new contestable period or other review provision may begin when coverage is reinstated. |
Examples of published grace-period and reinstatement figures
| Publisher or jurisdiction | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Texas Department of Insurance | 31 days for most policies | Consumer guidance example; not a universal rule for every policy or state. |
| LIC India | 15 days for monthly payments | Policy-condition example for LIC India monthly mode. |
| LIC India | One month, but no fewer than 30 days, for annual, half-yearly or quarterly payments | Country- and insurer-specific example. |
| Texas Department of Insurance | Five years for reinstatement in the example | Most companies are described as allowing reinstatement within this period, subject to requirements; not a guaranteed universal window. |
| Texas Department of Insurance | Two-year contestable period in the example | A reinstated policy is described as receiving a new contestable period. |
Questions to ask the insurer
Use a written message or call checklist so the answer is specific to your policy:
- What is the policy’s current status?
- What is the exact grace-period end date?
- What amount must be paid, and by what time, to keep coverage active?
- If the policy lapsed, what is the lapse date?
- Is reinstatement available, and what is its deadline?
- Are overdue premiums, interest or fees required?
- Is evidence of insurability or a medical exam required?
- Does a cash-value or automatic-premium provision apply?
- When would coverage become effective after reinstatement?
- Will a new contestable period or other review period apply?
- Can you send written confirmation of the answer?
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the policy ends on the due date. A grace period may still protect coverage, but only until the contract’s deadline.
- Assuming 31 days applies everywhere. The Texas figure is an example; other jurisdictions, insurers and payment modes differ.
- Waiting for a lapse notice. Contact the insurer as soon as the payment is missed.
- Paying only the regular premium after a lapse. Reinstatement may require back premiums, interest and underwriting information.
- Relying on a bank draft attempt. Confirm that the insurer actually posted the payment.
- Assuming cash value automatically protects the policy. An automatic premium loan may or may not exist and can affect policy values.
- Ignoring the reinstatement effective date. Approval, payment and restored coverage may occur on different dates.
- Overlooking the new contestable period. Ask what review period applies after reinstatement.
The safest response
First, locate the contract’s grace-period and reinstatement provisions. Next, contact the insurer immediately and obtain the policy status, exact amount due and deadline in writing. If the policy is still within its grace period, pay through an approved channel and verify posting. If it has lapsed, request the formal reinstatement application and complete every financial and medical requirement before the contract’s deadline.
Because a 31-day grace period, a five-year reinstatement window and a two-year contestable period are examples from Texas guidance rather than universal rules, the insurer’s written answer for your policy is the controlling practical information.
