The result depends on whether the error changes taxable profit, tax payable, a reported loss, a refund or an audit-related disclosure; which assessment year is involved; whether the return can still be revised; and whether the mistake is an accidental entry or an instance of under-reporting or specified misreporting.
You may need to correct the return and pay additional tax, interest or other amounts. A statutory penalty may also be considered where the facts meet the under-reporting rules. The first practical step is to reconcile the filed return with your books and determine the tax effect, then choose the correction route available for that year.

Why a wrong turnover entry can have different consequences
Turnover is not the same as taxable profit. The tax effect of changing sales depends on how business income was computed in the return, the expenses or deductions claimed, whether a presumptive method was used, and whether the revised figure changes total income, tax, a loss or a refund.

For example, correcting an omitted sale may increase business income and tax. Correcting a transposed digit may leave the final tax unchanged if the underlying computation was already based on the correct books, although the return still needs to be accurate. A lower turnover figure could affect an audit or reporting obligation even when the immediate tax difference is small. These outcomes cannot be determined from the turnover number alone.

An incorrect entry is not, by itself, proof of fraud or a guaranteed reason for scrutiny, prosecution or a penalty. The explanation for the error, the supporting records, the extent of disclosure and the applicable law for the relevant year all matter.
Start by identifying the return and the error
- Identify the financial year and assessment year. Note the year printed on the filed ITR and the year in which the return was assessed. The Income-tax Act, 1961 continues to govern returns for assessment year (AY) 2026-27 and earlier under the Income Tax Department’s current transition guidance. Returns relating to Tax Year 2026-27 and later use the framework of the Income-tax Act, 2025, subject to the operative provisions and portal instructions for that year.
- Obtain the filed records. Keep the acknowledgement, complete ITR, business schedules, computation, books or summaries used to prepare the return, and any notice or assessment communication.
- Reconcile the figure. Compare the turnover reported in the ITR with invoices, sales registers, bank records, accounting ledgers and relevant indirect-tax or other business records. A mismatch with one external record does not automatically establish wrongdoing; it is a prompt to investigate.
- Quantify the effect. Recompute profit, taxable income, tax payable, loss, refund and any audit or reporting item affected by the corrected sales figure.
- Classify the cause. Record whether this was a data-entry or calculation mistake, an omitted receipt, a duplicate entry, or an unsupported figure. Do not infer intent merely from the amount.
- Check assessment status and filing windows. A revised return is unavailable after the applicable deadline or after assessment is completed, while an updated return has separate eligibility rules.
Revised return under section 139(5)
When it is normally used
Section 139(5) of the Income-tax Act, 1961 permits a person who has filed a return and later discovers an omission or wrong statement to furnish a revised return, subject to the provision’s deadline and the assessment status for that year. This is the ordinary route for correcting a discovered turnover error when it remains open.
A revised return replaces the earlier return for processing purposes. It should contain the complete corrected computation, not only the changed turnover field. Recheck every linked schedule, including business income, depreciation, tax payments, losses and disclosures, before submitting it.

AY 2026-27 and earlier transition
The Department’s current Income Tax Returns FAQs state that an AY 2026-27 revised return remains governed by the old Act even though the new Act commenced on 1 April 2026. The FAQ identifies 31 March 2027 as a proposed revised-return date for AY 2026-27, subject to assessment being completed earlier. Treat that as year-specific guidance, not a permanent rule.

The same FAQ says revised or belated returns for AY 2025-26 and earlier cannot be filed after 1 April 2026, although an eligible ITR-U may still be possible under section 139(8A). Extensions, amendments and portal availability can change the practical deadline, so verify the live position for the exact assessment year.
Updated return (ITR-U) under section 139(8A)
What ITR-U is for
ITR-U is a separate mechanism for updating income or reducing a reported loss when the statutory conditions are met. The official 2026 Form ITR-U includes “Income not reported correctly” as a reason for updating income. It is intended for cases in which the ordinary revised-return route is no longer available or another permitted update is needed.
Under the old Act, an updated return cannot be used if it is a return of loss, decreases total tax liability, or results in or increases a refund. Therefore, a turnover correction whose only effect is to lower tax or increase a refund generally does not fit the old-Act ITR-U route. Confirm the precise year, exclusions and current form before filing.

The Income Tax Department also describes a separate 48-month updated-return window under the Income-tax Act, 2025 for returns covered by the new framework. Transition provisions are year-specific. Do not apply a single 48-month calculation to every return without checking which Act and notified provision govern it.
Revised return versus ITR-U
| Question | Revised return, section 139(5) | Updated return, ITR-U, section 139(8A) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Correct an omission or wrong statement in a return already filed. | Update income or reduce a reported loss where statutory conditions permit. |
| Timing | Must meet the applicable revision deadline and be filed before assessment is completed where the provision requires it. | Has a separate statutory window; the exact period depends on the governing Act and assessment year. |
| Can it lower tax? | It may correct an error in either direction if the route is still legally available. | Under the old Act, it cannot decrease total tax liability or create or increase a refund. |
| Payment | Any additional tax, interest or applicable fee resulting from the corrected computation must be addressed. | Additional tax is a specific part of the updated-return framework, along with tax and related amounts due. |
| Availability | Ends when the relevant deadline passes or the applicable assessment restriction applies. | Subject to statutory exclusions; it is not a universal replacement for a revised return. |
The precise liability cannot be calculated without the assessment year, original return, corrected turnover, income-computation method, tax payments and current law.
What if the correction increases income or tax?
If the corrected turnover increases taxable income, the revised computation may show additional tax and related amounts. File the permitted correction promptly rather than leaving the known error unaddressed. Preserve the reconciliation showing the original figure, the correct figure, how profit changed and how the tax was recomputed.
Section 270A penalty framework
Section 270A provides a penalty framework for under-reported income. The Income Tax Department’s official penalty guidance describes a penalty equal to 50% of the tax payable on under-reported income. Where the under-reporting results from specified misreporting, the stated rate rises to 200% of the tax payable on under-reported income.

Those are statutory rates in the described circumstances, not an automatic charge for every incorrect turnover entry. Specified misreporting examples in the statutory framework include suppression or misrepresentation of facts, false entries and failure to record certain receipts. Whether the provision applies requires an assessment of the actual records, explanation and proceedings for that year.
Use accurate language: an incorrect turnover entry may expose a taxpayer to an under-reporting penalty if the legal conditions are met; it does not mean the taxpayer will automatically be fined 50% or 200%. A complete, consistent explanation and supporting evidence can be relevant to the statutory exceptions and to how the case is handled.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if the correction lowers turnover, income or tax?
If the error overstated turnover and the ordinary revised-return route is still open, a revised return may correct the figure and reduce the resulting income or tax. Recompute the entire return rather than changing only the sales field, because a lower turnover can affect profit, expenses, loss set-off, audit reporting and other schedules.

How to correct the return in practice
- Make a written reconciliation. List the turnover reported in the ITR, the correct amount, the source records and the reason for the difference.
- Recompute the return. Update business income, expenses, presumptive or regular computation, losses, tax, interest, refund and payment details as applicable.
- Check the legal route. For the relevant AY, check whether section 139(5) is still open and whether assessment has been completed. If not, examine section 139(8A), including its direction-of-change restrictions, exclusions and additional-tax requirement.
- Use the correct utility. The Department’s Downloads: Income Tax Returns page provides assessment-year-specific forms and filing utilities. Select the exact assessment year, taxpayer type and ITR form; use the utility designated for an updated return when filing ITR-U.
- Pay amounts due before submission where required. An updated return has additional-tax requirements, and a corrected computation may also show tax, interest or fee. Use the payment details generated for the applicable filing.
- Submit and retain proof. Save the acknowledgement, computation, payment challans, reconciliation and source records. If verification is required, complete it within the displayed period.
- Respond consistently to any notice. If a notice or assessment is already pending, align the correction with the proceeding and obtain qualified Indian tax advice where the issue is substantial or involves audit complexity.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming turnover equals taxable income: the tax impact depends on the applicable computation and the rest of the return.
- Using ITR-U to claim a bigger refund: the old Act bars an updated return that creates or increases a refund.
- Applying a deadline from another year: revision and updated-return windows are assessment-year and Act specific.
- Changing only one field: linked schedules, profit, losses, tax and reporting statements must agree.
- Treating a typo as automatic misreporting: penalty exposure depends on facts and statutory conditions.
- Ignoring assessment status: a return may no longer be revisable once the applicable assessment restriction operates.
- Relying on an old utility: forms and portal rules change; download the current year-specific utility.
- Destroying the audit trail: keep invoices, ledgers, bank evidence, calculations and a written explanation.
When professional help is sensible
Consult a qualified Indian tax professional or chartered accountant when the correction is material, books and tax records disagree, the business was subject to audit, a notice or assessment is underway, multiple years are affected, or the corrected figure changes losses, refunds or reporting obligations. The professional should review the governing Act, eligibility, computation and payment rather than simply overwrite the turnover field.
No general published statistic establishes how often turnover mistakes lead to penalties or demands. The outcome in an individual case must be determined from that taxpayer’s records, assessment year, filing status and the law in force.
Which official materials to check
Use the Income Tax Department’s current Income Tax Returns FAQs for transition guidance, section 139 materials for revised returns, Notification No. 52/2026 and the 2026 Form ITR-U for updated-return fields and timing, the Department’s Downloads: Income Tax Returns page for year-specific utilities, and its Penalties and Prosecutions and section 270A materials for the penalty framework. Recheck these sources immediately before filing because deadlines, forms and portal availability are volatile.
