An account under India’s Senior Citizens’ Savings Scheme (SCSS) runs for five years from its opening date. At maturity, you can either close it by applying in Form 3 and receive the matured balance, or extend it once for three years by submitting Form 4 within one year after the maturity date. If you do neither, the scheme does not automatically renew the deposit in SCSS; it earns the interest rate applicable to a Post Office Savings Account instead.
SCSS maturity at a glance
The governing Senior Citizens’ Savings Scheme, 2019 sets out a fixed original term and two post-maturity actions. The dates below are measured from the account’s opening or maturity date, not from the date on which you happen to submit a form.

| Situation | What you submit | What happens | Important timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original account reaches five years | Form 3 to close | The account becomes payable and is closed under the maturity procedure. | Apply after the five-year maturity date. |
| You want to keep the deposit in SCSS | Form 4 for extension | One further three-year SCSS period is allowed. | Submit within one year from maturity; the extension is treated as starting on the maturity date. |
| You submit neither extension nor closure | None | The deposit earns the Post Office Savings Account rate rather than continuing automatically at the SCSS rate. | Rates can change, so check the current India Post schedule. |
| An account has already been extended | Form 3 to close | The extended account can be closed without the premature-closure deduction once one year has passed from the extension date. | The extension period itself is three years, but the no-deduction point arrives after one year. |
The Government of India’s scheme describes the extension in paragraph 8(1): “The account holder may extend the account for a further period of three years by making an application in Form-4 within a period of one year from the date of maturity.” Paragraph 8(2) adds that the extension is deemed to have been made from the maturity date, regardless of when the application is filed within that window.

What the five-year maturity date means
SCSS maturity is calculated as five years from the account’s opening date. On that date, the deposit is payable under the scheme’s closure process. Maturity does not itself transfer the money to you, and it does not itself create an extension. You must choose the relevant procedure and submit the prescribed form.

Finding the date to act
Use the opening date recorded for the account and count five years to identify maturity. For example, an account opened on 15 April 2021 reaches its original maturity on 15 April 2026. The one-year period for an extension then runs through 15 April 2027. Keep the account statement or passbook available so the account office can verify the recorded opening and maturity dates.
What maturity does not do
- It does not automatically renew the account for another SCSS term.
- It does not give you more than one three-year extension.
- It does not, by itself, complete a withdrawal or transfer of the balance.
Option 1: close the account at maturity with Form 3
If you need the principal and accumulated interest, use the maturity-closure route. The scheme identifies Form 3 as the application for closing an SCSS account at the end of the original five-year term, and it also uses Form 3 for closure after an extended period.
- Confirm the maturity date. Check the account’s opening date and identify the date on which five years end.
- Obtain the current Form 3. Use the prescribed form in force at the post office or other accounts office holding the SCSS account. Do not rely on an old form reference from an unofficial guide.
- Address the application to the account office. The form is addressed to the Postmaster or Manager, as applicable to the office holding the account.
- Complete the closure request. Enter the account details and the payment instructions requested on the current form, then sign it as the account holder. The office may ask for supporting records or a particular payment setup; the scheme text does not establish one identical checklist for every location.
- Submit the form to the holding office. Ask the staff member to confirm that the request is being processed as a maturity closure, not as an early closure.
- Keep the acknowledgement and final statement. Retain proof of submission and the statement showing the account has been closed and the balance paid according to the office’s process.
The reviewed scheme does not set out one universal list of identity documents, cancelled cheques, bank details, or other attachments for every post office and bank branch. Before travelling, contact the office that holds the account and ask which current supporting documents and payment method it requires.
Option 2: extend the account once with Form 4
An SCSS holder may keep the deposit invested for one additional three-year period. This is an optional, one-time extension, not an automatic rollover.

- Check that the account has reached maturity. The extension window is tied to the maturity date of the original five-year account.
- Get the current Form 4. The 2019 scheme names Form 4 for an extension. Use the version supplied by the office holding the account.
- File Form 4 within one year after maturity. An application made later in that one-year window is still treated as effective from the maturity date.
- Address and sign the form correctly. Forms are directed to the Postmaster or Manager. Follow the office’s instructions for account details, signatures, and any supporting records.
- Obtain confirmation of the extension. Ask for an acknowledgement or updated account record showing that the deposit is in its three-year extended period.
How the deemed-start rule works
Suppose an account matures on 1 December 2026 and the holder files Form 4 on 1 March 2027. The application is within one year, so the extension is deemed to have begun on 1 December 2026, not on 1 March 2027. The maturity-date rule also determines which SCSS interest rate applies during the extension.
Closing after an extension
The holder may close an extended account without the premature-closure deduction after one year from the extension date. Because the extension is deemed to start on the original maturity date, the one-year point is measured from that date. Form 3 is the closure form identified by the scheme for this stage as well.
Which interest rate applies after maturity?
The rate depends on the action you take and, for an extension, on the rate in force at the account’s maturity date. India Post’s official savings page displayed 8.2% per annum for SCSS when checked in 2026. That figure is time-sensitive; it is not a guarantee for every account or for every future maturity date.
During a three-year extension
The scheme says an extended deposit earns the SCSS rate applicable on the date of maturity. Therefore, the relevant rate is locked by the maturity-date rule for purposes of the extension, rather than being selected on the day you hand in Form 4. Confirm the applicable rate for your account’s actual maturity date with India Post or the holding office.
Rank #3
If you leave the account unextended and unclosed
An SCSS deposit that is neither extended under the scheme nor closed at maturity earns interest at the rate applicable to a Post Office Savings Account. India Post displayed 4% per annum for that account when checked in 2026. This is also a changeable rate, so verify the current schedule before deciding to leave the account unattended.
Do not treat the displayed 8.2% and 4% figures as permanent offers. They are the rates shown on the Department of Posts’ official India Post savings page at the time of checking and can be revised under the applicable government rate-setting process.
Close or extend: a practical comparison
| Question | Close at maturity | Extend once | Do nothing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Form | Form 3 | Form 4 | None |
| Deadline | After the five-year maturity date | Within one year after maturity | No application, but the account is not continuing as an SCSS term |
| Access to principal | Requests payment of the matured balance | Principal remains invested for the extended period | Funds remain on account under the Post Office Savings Account interest treatment |
| Interest rule | Interest is settled through the maturity-closure process | SCSS rate applicable on the maturity date | Post Office Savings Account rate |
| Further extension | Not applicable after closure | Only one three-year extension is permitted | Not an automatic extension |
| When can you close without the extended-account premature deduction? | At maturity under the maturity procedure | After one year from the extension date | Ask the holding office how it will process a later closure |
Choose closure when access matters
Use Form 3 if you need the principal for living expenses, another investment, a deposit elsewhere, or any other purpose. Closing avoids leaving the account in the lower Post Office Savings Account interest treatment that applies when no extension or maturity closure is made.

Use Form 4 if you want to keep the deposit in SCSS for another three years and can leave the principal invested. The extension preserves the scheme’s maturity-date rate rule, subject to confirmation of the rate applicable on your maturity date.

Do not rely on inaction as a strategy
Doing nothing is not the same as extending. The account does not automatically receive another SCSS term, and the applicable Post Office Savings Account rate may be lower than the SCSS rate. If you are undecided, note the one-year Form 4 deadline and obtain the current rate and office instructions before it expires.

Example: closing at the original maturity
An account opened on 15 April 2021 matures on 15 April 2026. The holder submits Form 3 to the holding office and requests closure. The account is processed under the maturity procedure; no extension is created unless the holder separately files Form 4 within the permitted window.
Example: filing an extension several months later
An account matures on 1 December 2026. The holder files Form 4 on 1 March 2027, which is within one year of maturity. The extension is deemed to start on 1 December 2026. The holder may close the extended account without the premature-closure deduction after 1 December 2027, subject to the office completing the Form 3 closure procedure.

If the holder does not submit Form 4 within one year from maturity, the scheme’s stated extension route is no longer available for that maturity event. If the account also remains unclosed, the deposit receives the Post Office Savings Account rate under the scheme’s default treatment. Contact the account office for the correct way to close the account and for the current applicable rate.

Forms, offices and records
Use the current prescribed forms rather than a downloaded legacy version. Form 3 is the closure application; Form 4 is the one-time extension application. Both forms address the Postmaster or Manager of the office holding the account.
- Ask the holding office whether it is a post office or bank branch process and where the application must be lodged.
- Confirm the exact maturity date recorded in the account system.
- Ask which identity, account, nomination, bank-credit, or other supporting records are currently required. The scheme reviewed here does not establish one universal checklist for every office.
- Request a receipt, acknowledgement, or updated statement after filing.
- Keep copies of the signed form and any communication about the rate, maturity, or payment instruction.
Local processing details can differ even though the governing form and timing rules are the same. The office that holds the account is the appropriate place to verify current document and payment requirements.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming maturity creates an automatic renewal
It does not. Decide between Form 3 closure and the one-time Form 4 extension. Inaction leads to the Post Office Savings Account interest treatment, not a new SCSS term.

Waiting beyond the one-year extension window
Mark the deadline as one year from the maturity date, not one year from the day you receive a reminder or statement. Filing within the window is what allows the extension to be deemed effective from maturity.
Using the wrong form
Form 3 is for closure; Form 4 is for extension under the 2019 scheme. Older articles may mention different legacy references, but they do not replace the current Form 4 named in the scheme.
Treating a displayed rate as permanent
The 8.2% SCSS and 4% Post Office Savings Account figures displayed by India Post in 2026 can change. Check the official rate applicable to your maturity date and ask the account office to confirm how it will be applied.
Assuming every office asks for identical attachments
The reviewed rules specify the forms and timing, not one nationwide supporting-document checklist. Call the office holding the account before submitting so an incomplete application does not delay processing.
Quick Recap
A decision checklist before you submit anything
- Write down the account opening date and calculate the five-year maturity date.
- Decide whether you need the principal now or can keep it invested for three more years.
- If closing, request the current Form 3 and ask about payment instructions.
- If extending, request Form 4 and submit it no later than one year after maturity.
- Ask the office to confirm the rate applicable under the maturity-date rule or the Post Office Savings Account default, as relevant.
- Bring the records and supporting documents the holding office currently requires.
- Keep proof of submission and obtain an updated account record.
