What happens when a UPI payment is pending, and how long should you wait?

A pending UPI payment is still awaiting confirmation; the status alone does not prove that the payment failed or succeeded. First check the transaction in your UPI app. If confirmation has not arrived within one hour, NPCI advises contacting your bank. The correct waiting period then depends on whether this was a transfer to a person, a failed transfer requiring reversal, or a merchant payment.

For a pending transfer that was successful on the payer side but is delayed at the beneficiary bank, NPCI says the recipient should receive the money within 48 hours after that bank completes its daily settlement. RBI’s formal outer limits are different: T+1 day for a debited UPI funds transfer that cannot be credited to the beneficiary, and T+5 days for a merchant payment debited without merchant confirmation. Do not make a second payment until you have checked the first transaction with the recipient or merchant and your bank.

What a “pending” UPI status means

NPCI’s UPI HELP guidance describes a pending transaction as one in which the amount is stuck in processing on the payer’s side or the receiver’s side, so confirmation has not arrived. Its wording is: “When amount gets stuck in payment process either at your end or at receiver’s end, the transaction goes to pending state.”

That is an intermediate state, not a final result. A confirmed success means the payment has been accepted and credited according to the transaction record. A failed transaction means the payment could not be completed. Pending sits between those outcomes because one of the banks or payment systems has not yet returned a final confirmation.

Pending is not the same as a failed payment

If a technical problem causes a UPI transfer to fail after your account was debited, the amount should be refunded, but processing that refund can take longer than the original payment attempt. Do not assume that seeing money leave your account proves the recipient has received it; check the transaction status and the beneficiary’s account.

Why bank systems use terms such as reversal and deemed approved

NPCI’s ecosystem glossary distinguishes a debit reversal from a “deemed approved” remittance. A debit reversal covers a situation in which your account may have been debited but the bank cannot confirm the reversal immediately. A non-instant reversal or credit may then be processed manually by the bank under RBI guidelines.

A deemed-approved remittance describes a case where the beneficiary bank has not sent an online credit confirmation. These system states explain why a pending display cannot, by itself, tell you whether the final outcome will be success or reversal.

How long should you wait? Use the scenario, not one blanket deadline

Situation What the official guidance says How to use the timing
No confirmation has arrived NPCI says to contact your bank’s customer support if confirmation has not arrived within one hour. One hour is the point to seek a status update, not a promise that every payment will be resolved by then.
Payer was debited; a person’s or beneficiary’s account is still awaiting credit and the transfer remains pending NPCI says that, where the transfer succeeded on the payer side but the beneficiary bank is delayed, the amount should reach the beneficiary within 48 hours after that bank completes its daily settlement. This is consumer guidance for that specific delayed-beneficiary-bank case. It is not a universal resolution time for every pending payment.
Failed UPI funds transfer: payer debited but beneficiary account cannot be credited RBI’s framework sets an auto-reversal outer limit of T+1 day. It specifies ₹100 per day compensation when reversal is delayed beyond that limit. This rule concerns a failed funds transfer, not an ordinary pending display and not a merchant-payment deadline.
UPI merchant payment: account debited but the merchant did not receive confirmation RBI sets an auto-reversal outer limit of T+5 days and specifies ₹100 per day compensation for delay beyond that limit. This is the merchant-payment rule. Do not apply T+5 to a person-to-person transfer.

RBI defines T as the calendar day on which the transaction occurred. The T+1 and T+5 periods are prescribed outer limits for failed-transaction resolution under RBI’s framework. They should not be presented as a single waiting period for all pending UPI payments.

Why the 48-hour guidance and RBI reversal limits differ

The 48-hour statement from NPCI describes a pending transfer that was successful on the payer side but is waiting for the beneficiary bank to complete processing after its daily settlement. It addresses expected credit in a particular operational situation.

RBI’s T+1 rule addresses a different end state: the transfer has failed and the beneficiary bank cannot credit the account, so the debited amount must be reversed within the prescribed time. The T+5 rule addresses a merchant payment where the account was debited but the merchant did not receive confirmation. Treating all three figures as interchangeable can lead you either to retry too quickly or to wait longer than the formal reversal framework allows.

What to do while the payment is pending

  1. Open transaction history in your UPI app. NPCI says the history area shows past and pending transactions. Select the payment and record its displayed status, date, amount, beneficiary or merchant, and reference details.
  2. Look for the transaction reference number. Keep the 12-digit transaction number or RRN (retrieval reference number) available. Banks and complaint systems use it to locate the payment across the UPI and banking records.
  3. Allow the initial processing window, then contact your bank. If confirmation has not arrived within one hour, NPCI’s FAQ says: “In case you have not received your confirmation within an hour please contact the customer support at your bank.” Use the support channel shown by your bank and ask whether the transaction is pending, successful, failed, or awaiting reversal.
  4. Use the app’s status or grievance facility. Many UPI apps provide an option on the transaction-details screen to check status or raise a dispute. Submit the request against the original transaction rather than starting a new payment.
  5. Check with the intended recipient or merchant. Ask whether the amount has arrived and provide the transaction time and reference number without sharing your UPI PIN. A beneficiary may see a credit even while your app is waiting for confirmation.
  6. Keep evidence until the case is closed. Save the transaction screen, bank messages, support ticket number, and any confirmation from the recipient. These details help if the status later changes or a complaint has to be escalated.

Should you try the payment again?

Do not automatically retry a pending payment. The first transaction may complete after the app displayed the pending state, creating a duplicate debit or duplicate payment. Confirm the first transaction with your bank and the recipient or merchant before making another attempt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the recipient confirms that no money arrived, that still does not establish that the first payment failed. Ask your bank to identify the transaction’s final state and whether a reversal is in progress. Only then decide whether a second payment is necessary, and keep the original reference number separate from the new transaction’s details.

What happens when your account was debited?

Transfer to a person or beneficiary account

When a UPI funds transfer debits the payer but the beneficiary bank cannot credit the beneficiary account, RBI’s failed-transaction framework requires auto-reversal by T+1 day. If the reversal is late, the framework specifies compensation of ₹100 per day beyond the applicable limit.

That rule is an outer limit for a failed transfer. A pending transfer that is still being processed may follow NPCI’s delayed-credit guidance instead. Your bank should tell you whether it has classified the transaction as pending, successful, or failed.

Payment to a merchant

For a merchant payment debited without confirmation at the merchant, RBI sets a separate T+5-day auto-reversal limit. Compensation is ₹100 per day when the reversal exceeds that limit. The merchant rule is not a substitute for the T+1 rule covering a beneficiary-account transfer.

RBI’s notification says: “Wherever financial compensation is involved, the same shall be effected to the customer’s account suo moto, without waiting for a complaint or claim from the customer.” In other words, the framework provides for automatic compensation where its conditions and delay thresholds apply; you should still contact the bank if the amount or compensation is missing.

How to raise and escalate a complaint

Start with the bank or UPI app

Raise the issue from the transaction details in your UPI app or through the bank that holds the debited account. Include the transaction date, amount, beneficiary or merchant, status shown in the app, and the 12-digit transaction number or RRN. Ask for a clear classification: pending, successful, failed, reversed, or credited but awaiting display.

Use NPCI’s complaint portal if the issue remains unresolved

NPCI says its complaint portal forwards a complaint to the relevant member institution. The member bank or institution, not NPCI itself, is responsible for resolving the transaction. Keep the complaint reference and any response from the institution.

Escalate through the RBI route when required

If the bank does not provide redress under the failed-transaction framework, RBI’s notification identifies the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme as the escalation route. Use the bank’s complaint process first and retain proof of that approach so the ombudsman submission includes the relevant dates and reference numbers.

Security precautions while seeking help

  • Never disclose your UPI PIN to bank staff, app support, a recipient, or anyone claiming to investigate the payment. NPCI’s UPI HELP material specifically warns users not to share it.
  • Do not approve a new collect request or scan a new QR code merely because someone says it will release a pending refund.
  • Share transaction identifiers only through the bank’s or UPI provider’s official support channel. A reference number helps locate a payment; it does not authorize a debit.
  • Check the beneficiary name and amount on any new payment screen before approving it.

A practical decision checklist

  • Pending and less than one hour: review the transaction details and wait for the initial processing update; do not send a duplicate payment.
  • No confirmation after one hour: contact your bank, ask for the transaction’s backend status, and use the app’s status or grievance option.
  • Payer debited, beneficiary waiting: verify with the recipient, retain the RRN, and distinguish NPCI’s 48-hour delayed-credit guidance from RBI’s formal failed-transfer reversal limit.
  • Merchant says no confirmation: ask the bank to treat it as a merchant-payment case if appropriate and track the separate T+5 framework.
  • Reversal or compensation is late: request the amount and applicable ₹100-per-day compensation, then escalate through the NPCI complaint route and, where necessary, the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme.
