What Happens When a Treasury Bond Matures?

When a U.S. Treasury marketable security reaches its maturity date, the Treasury pays the principal it owes. For a note or bond, the final scheduled interest payment is made as well. If the security is in TreasuryDirect and you have not set up reinvestment, the proceeds are sent automatically to your Certificate of Indebtedness (C of I) or designated bank account. A bank or broker holding the security handles the redemption and sends the money through its own processing system.

“Treasury bond” is often used as shorthand for several securities. Bills, notes, bonds, Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS), and floating rate notes (FRNs) do not all produce the same cash flow, so the security type and custody arrangement determine exactly what happens.

What maturity means

Maturity is the end of a Treasury security’s stated term. The maturity date appears in the auction terms and in your account records. Under 31 CFR §356.30, the Treasury states: “We will pay principal on bills, notes, and bonds on the maturity date as specified in the auction announcement.”

If the scheduled payment date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or Federal Reserve holiday, payment moves to the next business day. The delay does not create an extra day of interest. The maturity event is therefore a defined payment date, not the date on which a holder must submit a redemption request.

What you receive depends on the Treasury security

Security Cash flow before maturity What is paid at maturity
Treasury bill Usually no periodic coupon. A bill may be bought at a discount or at par. Face value. The difference between the discounted purchase price and face value is the bill’s interest.
Treasury note Fixed-rate interest paid every six months. Treasury lists 2-, 3-, 5-, 7-, and 10-year note terms. Principal (face value) plus the final scheduled interest payment.
Treasury bond The issue’s terms control its interest schedule and rate. Principal plus any final scheduled interest payment under that issue’s terms.
TIPS Principal is adjusted for inflation and interest is based on the inflation-adjusted amount. The security’s adjusted principal and any interest due under its terms.
Floating rate note (FRN) Interest varies according to the note’s floating-rate formula. Principal plus the final amount of interest due under the FRN terms.

The bill example is the easiest way to see why “interest” does not always arrive as a coupon. If you paid less than a bill’s face value, Treasury pays the larger face value at maturity; that difference is the return. Notes make periodic interest payments, while the exact cash-flow rules for bonds, TIPS, and FRNs come from the individual issue.

Where the maturity money goes

Security held in TreasuryDirect

TreasuryDirect says that, when no reinvestment instruction is active, maturity proceeds are paid automatically. The money goes first to the account’s Certificate of Indebtedness (C of I) or to the designated bank account according to the account instructions. A C of I is an internal TreasuryDirect cash balance that can be left there for later use or transferred according to the account’s settings.

Security held at a bank or broker

If a financial institution holds the Treasury, TreasuryDirect is not the system posting the customer’s cash. The institution receives or processes the redemption and may route it through a clearing firm or other intermediary before crediting the customer. Posting time, cash-sweep treatment, and whether the proceeds remain available for trading are institution-specific. Ask the bank or broker where the money will appear and when it will be available rather than assuming the TreasuryDirect timing applies.

Reinvestment is optional, but it has rules

You can take the proceeds as cash or use them to purchase another eligible Treasury security. TreasuryDirect defines reinvestment as using money from a maturing security to buy another security of the same type, subject to the program’s issue and timing rules. A reinvestment instruction is not a promise that an appropriate replacement will always be issued.

How to review a TreasuryDirect maturity

  1. Sign in to TreasuryDirect and open the holding’s details to confirm the maturity date, security type, and any existing reinvestment instruction.
  2. Decide whether you want the proceeds sent to the C of I or bank account, or used for another issue. Check that your bank information is current if you want an external transfer.
  3. For an eligible reinvestment, review the replacement term and the auction associated with it. The available term is determined by the securities Treasury is offering at that time.
  4. Save or confirm the instruction before its cutoff. TreasuryDirect allows an instruction when the original security is purchased or later, but the option closes four business days before the relevant auction.
  5. After the maturity or replacement auction, verify the completed transaction and the destination of any residual cash.

Bill reinvestment

A bill must be reinvested into another bill of the same term. TreasuryDirect says you can schedule this when buying the original bill or up to four business days before it matures. The replacement bill is bought in the applicable auction, and the maturing proceeds fund the purchase.

Note, bond, and FRN reinvestment

Notes and bonds can, in some circumstances, be reinvested into a different term. In a reopening, the term assigned to the next eligible issue can differ from the label you expected, so review the issue details rather than relying only on the original security’s term. FRNs reinvest into a two-year FRN under the TreasuryDirect feature.

TIPS are excluded from this TreasuryDirect feature

The TreasuryDirect reinvestment page does not include TIPS among the eligible securities. A TIPS holder therefore should not assume that the same automatic replacement choice is available. Check the holding’s current options and, if it is at a financial institution, ask that institution how it handles a maturing TIPS.

When TreasuryDirect cancels a scheduled reinvestment

A scheduled replacement can fail even when you entered an instruction. TreasuryDirect says it cancels the reinvestment and deposits the proceeds when no eligible issue is available or when the transaction requires additional funds that are not available. In that situation, the money follows the account’s normal maturity-payment destination instead of purchasing a replacement.

What happens on the exact payment date

On the maturity date, Treasury calculates the principal due under the security’s terms and pays it. For notes and bonds, the final scheduled interest is included. For bills, the face-value payment incorporates the return that was created by buying at a discount. If the date is a weekend or Federal Reserve holiday, the next business day is the payment date, with no additional interest for the calendar-day delay.

TreasuryDirect does not publish a universal hour at which every broker must post proceeds. A broker may show the cash later than the Treasury’s payment date because of its own settlement and ledger procedures. Treat the maturity date as the entitlement date and confirm the institution’s posting schedule when the funds are needed for another transaction.

Federal and state tax treatment

TreasuryDirect states that earnings on Treasury marketable securities are subject to federal tax but exempt from state and local income tax. The taxable amount can be the coupon interest on a note, bond, TIPS, or FRN, or the discount on a bill measured as the difference between its purchase price and face value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TIPS reporting before maturity

TIPS create a timing issue that surprises many holders. TreasuryDirect reports annual TIPS principal adjustments on Form 1099-OID, including adjustments that occur while the security is still held and before the final maturity payment. The tax reporting therefore may not match the year in which you ultimately receive the inflation-adjusted principal.

Keep the right records

Retain the purchase confirmation, maturity statement, and the tax form supplied for the year. A bill’s discount, a note or bond’s coupon, and a TIPS principal adjustment are different items even though each relates to a Treasury holding. Your tax filing may also depend on the account type and calendar dates. The federal exemption from state and local tax does not remove federal reporting requirements, and it is not individualized tax advice.

If your Treasury is at a broker or bank

Before maturity, ask the institution four practical questions:

  • Will principal and the final interest payment be credited automatically, or is any instruction required?
  • On what date and at what time will the proceeds be available for withdrawal or reinvestment?
  • Will the cash enter a sweep account, remain as a brokerage cash balance, or be sent to a linked bank account?
  • How will the institution issue the annual tax statement for the security?

These questions matter because a broker-held Treasury can pass through multiple institutions before reaching your account. The Treasury’s direct-account procedures do not establish a universal posting time or cash treatment for every intermediary.

A maturity checklist

Several weeks before maturity

  • Identify whether the holding is a bill, note, bond, TIPS, or FRN.
  • Confirm the maturity date and the principal amount shown in your account.
  • Check bank instructions, the TreasuryDirect C of I balance, and any existing reinvestment order.
  • Compare the cash-access date with the date you may need the money.

Before the reinvestment cutoff

  • Choose cash or reinvestment deliberately; do not leave an old instruction in place by accident.
  • Verify that the replacement is the permitted type and term.
  • Check whether the replacement requires additional funds and ensure those funds are available.

After maturity

  • Confirm that principal and any final interest were credited.
  • Check whether TreasuryDirect placed the money in the C of I or sent it to the designated bank.
  • For a broker-held security, compare the institution’s transaction entry with the expected principal and payment date.
  • Save the confirmation for tax records.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming every Treasury pays a coupon

A bill’s return is generally the difference between its purchase price and face value, not a six-month coupon. Look at the security type before estimating the maturity cash flow.

Assuming reinvestment is automatic

Without an active instruction, TreasuryDirect pays the proceeds rather than buying a replacement. Even an instruction can be canceled if no eligible issue exists or required extra money is unavailable.

Using the original term as a guarantee

For notes and bonds, the next eligible issue or a reopening can assign a different term. Review the actual replacement issue and auction details.

Expecting weekend interest

A weekend or Federal Reserve holiday moves payment to the next business day but does not add interest for the intervening calendar days.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Overlooking TIPS tax adjustments

TIPS principal changes can be reported annually on Form 1099-OID before maturity. Waiting for the final redemption statement can leave part of the year’s reportable activity overlooked.

Illustrative cash-flow examples

A Treasury bill

Suppose a bill has a face value greater than the amount paid at purchase. At maturity, Treasury pays the face value. The difference is the bill’s interest, even though no periodic coupon arrived during the term. If no reinvestment instruction exists, the face-value proceeds follow the TreasuryDirect or broker-custody process.

A Treasury note

A note pays its fixed-rate interest every six months. At the final payment, the holder receives the last scheduled interest and the note’s principal. The holder can then leave the money in the C of I, transfer it, or use an eligible reinvestment instruction.

A broker-held security

The Treasury’s obligation to pay principal does not change because a broker holds the security. What changes is the last step: the broker or its clearing network receives and posts the proceeds. The institution’s customer-service team can provide the posting and withdrawal timeline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical decision at maturity

There are two basic outcomes: take the cash or reinvest it. Cash provides access to the principal on the account’s payment schedule. Reinvestment keeps money in a Treasury security but commits it to the available issue, type, and term under the program’s rules. Before choosing, weigh when you need the money, whether the replacement security matches your time horizon, whether extra funds are required, and how the transaction will appear on your tax records.

For a TreasuryDirect holding, verify the instruction and destination before the cutoff. For a bank- or broker-held holding, confirm that institution’s redemption and posting process. Once the maturity date arrives, the principal is paid according to the issue terms; the remaining question is where you want the proceeds to go next.
