Federal Student Aid says delinquency reaching 90 days or more is reported to the three major national credit bureaus, and most federal loans enter default after 270 days without scheduled payments.
Private student loans follow the promissory note and applicable state law instead of one federal timetable. The fastest way to limit damage in either case is to identify the loan, contact the servicer or lender, and ask what amount will bring the account current and what relief is actually available.

Federal and private loans do not use the same clock
The first question is whether the missed payment belongs to a federal loan or a private loan. Federal Student Aid and the U.S. Department of Education publish the federal timeline. A private lender can define delinquency and default differently in its contract, subject to applicable law.

| Issue | Federal student loans | Private student loans |
|---|---|---|
| When delinquency starts | The day after the scheduled payment is missed. | Set by the loan contract; the lender may have its own grace or cure period. |
| Credit reporting | Federal Student Aid says a servicer reports delinquency at 90 days or more to the three major national credit bureaus. | The lender may report according to the contract and credit-reporting rules; there is no universal federal threshold. |
| Typical default timing | Most federal loans enter default after 270 days without scheduled payments. | Timing and triggers vary. Review the promissory note and state-law implications. |
| Collection tools | After default, possible remedies include Treasury offset, administrative wage garnishment, collection agencies, litigation, and loss of certain federal benefits. | The lender may collect directly, use an agency, or sue within the applicable state limitation period. |
| Payment relief | Income-driven repayment and other federal options may be available if you qualify. | There is no single standard private-loan system; any hardship or modified-payment option is lender-specific. |
| Cosigner exposure | Federal loans generally do not require a cosigner. | A cosigner can share repayment responsibility and credit damage. |
That distinction prevents a common mistake: applying the federal 90-day and 270-day figures to a private loan. Those numbers describe the federal program only.

What happens on a federal loan after a missed payment?
The day after the due date: delinquency begins
Federal Student Aid’s glossary states, “A loan becomes delinquent the day after payment was due.” Delinquency means the account is behind on a scheduled payment. It is not the same as default. A payment that was submitted but has not posted can create a different issue, so check the servicer’s payment history before assuming the account is delinquent.
At 90 days: credit reporting may begin
Federal Student Aid says that when delinquency reaches 90 days or more, the servicer reports it to the three major national credit bureaus. A shorter delay is not a guarantee that every credit file is unaffected, so confirm the account status with the servicer and examine your reports if you are concerned. The 90-day statement is a federal threshold supplied by Federal Student Aid in 2026, not a promise about private loans.
At 270 days: most federal loans enter default
Most federal student loans enter default after 270 days without the required scheduled payments. Default is a more serious status than delinquency. The exact account history, loan type, and notices matter, but a borrower should treat the 270-day point as a deadline to resolve the problem, not as a period during which nothing happens.

A newer Federal Student Aid default FAQ says involuntary collections such as wage garnishment and Treasury offset may begin after more than 360 days without payment and without taking action to resolve default. This does not replace the 270-day default threshold. It describes a later possible collection stage, and notices and individual circumstances control what happens in a particular case.
Consequences of federal default
Default-related consequences are possibilities that follow a default determination; they are not the immediate result of one missed installment.

- Credit damage: The default can be reported, in addition to earlier delinquency reporting, and can make future borrowing or housing applications more difficult.
- Loss of federal aid eligibility: You may lose eligibility for additional federal student aid until the default is resolved.
- Loss of some repayment benefits: Certain repayment-plan or payment-management benefits may be unavailable while the loan is in default.
- Treasury offset: The government may intercept eligible federal tax refunds or certain federal benefits to collect the debt.
- Administrative wage garnishment: Federal Student Aid’s July 2026 payment-preparation guidance says up to 15% of a paycheck may be taken after default. “Up to” is a stated legal collection limit, not a prediction that every borrower will lose that amount.
- Collection costs and agencies: The account may be transferred for collection, adding costs allowed by the applicable rules.
- Acceleration or litigation: The balance may become due under the applicable terms, and litigation is a possible remedy.
Do not wait for a garnishment notice to seek help. Once a notice arrives, deadlines and objection procedures can apply, and the servicer or official federal account records are the place to verify the status.
Private student loans follow the contract
Private loans do not share the federal 90-day reporting and 270-day default timetable. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says private loans often enter default after missed monthly payments, but the trigger can depend on the promissory note and other contract terms. Some agreements contain a cure period, late charges, or additional default triggers.
A private lender may report the account, seek payment itself, assign the debt to a collection agency, or sue within the applicable state statute of limitations. The limitation period is state- and fact-specific; do not assume that a federal timeline or a general internet rule determines your deadline.
What to check in the private-loan documents
- The exact due date and any grace or cure period.
- How the contract defines delinquency and default.
- Late fees, collection costs, and whether the balance can be accelerated.
- Whether the lender offers a temporary forbearance, reduced payment, modified plan, or other hardship arrangement.
- How a change in payment status affects a cosigner or a possible cosigner release.
- The notice method and address the lender must use before collection or legal action.
The CFPB notes that private lenders vary and that there is no single private equivalent to federal income-driven repayment. Ask what this lender offers, but treat any option as conditional until you receive the terms in writing.
What happens to a cosigner?
A cosigner can be affected even when the student borrower is the person who missed the payment. CFPB guidance says late or missed payments may appear on both the borrower’s and cosigner’s credit reports. The cosigner shares responsibility for repayment if the student does not pay.

After a private-loan default, the lender may pursue the cosigner through collection activity or a lawsuit, subject to the contract and applicable law. Tell the cosigner promptly, compare the lender’s account information with the cosigner’s credit records, and ask the lender whether a payment arrangement or release program exists. Do not assume that a private lender must release a cosigner after a certain number of payments; requirements are contract-specific.

- Identify the affected loan. Use your StudentAid.gov account and federal servicer account for federal loans. For private loans, sign in to the lender or servicer account. List the due date, amount, loan type, and current status for every affected account.
- Confirm whether the payment actually posted. Check bank records, payment confirmations, and the servicer’s transaction history. If money was sent on time but is missing, ask the servicer to research the posting rather than making assumptions.
- Call or message the servicer or lender promptly. Ask whether the account is delinquent, the amount required to bring it current, the date that amount must arrive, and how a payment will be allocated. Request written confirmation of any arrangement.
- Ask about a sustainable payment. Explain whether the problem is a one-time cash shortfall or an ongoing affordability issue. A temporary promise that you cannot meet can leave the account delinquent again.
- Protect essential records. Save statements, notices, call reference numbers, payment receipts, and copies of applications. These records help resolve posting errors and show what was agreed.
- Tell a cosigner if one is involved. Early notice gives both people time to review the contract and avoid surprises on their credit reports.
If you cannot afford the next federal payment
Ask about income-driven repayment
Federal Student Aid says income-driven repayment bases the payment on income and family size. Some borrowers may qualify for a $0 payment. A $0 calculation is still an approved payment obligation when the plan says it is $0; it is not the same as ignoring the account. Confirm current eligibility, documentation, and application rules with the servicer or StudentAid.gov because plan availability and requirements can change.
Ask about temporary relief
Your servicer can explain whether a deferment, forbearance, or another temporary arrangement is available for your situation. Interest treatment and the effect on the repayment schedule differ by option. Do not stop paying simply because you submitted a request; ask what payment is due while the request is being reviewed.
Do not wait for a missed payment to become a pattern
If income, medical costs, unemployment, or another sustained change is driving the problem, say so during the first contact. The earlier the servicer can evaluate an alternative, the more options may remain before the account reaches the federal credit-reporting or default stages.
If you are already in federal default
Ask the federal servicer or the organization handling the defaulted loan which resolution paths apply to your loan type. Federal Student Aid describes rehabilitation as one path. For Direct Loan and Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) borrowers, the general rehabilitation rule is nine on-time, voluntary payments within ten consecutive months. Successful rehabilitation removes the default status and stops collections, but requirements and payment calculations vary by loan type, so verify the terms before relying on that general rule.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the missed payment can affect your credit
For federal loans, the clearest stated milestone is 90 days of delinquency, when the servicer may report to the three major national credit bureaus. A report can affect the borrower’s credit history, and a private-loan cosigner may see the same late-payment information. Review all three reports for account status, balance, and dates, and dispute information that is inaccurate with the reporting company and the furnisher using the records you kept.
Credit reporting is separate from the question of whether money was posted correctly. If your bank shows a timely payment but the loan account does not, ask the servicer for a payment trace and correction before treating the entry as an unavoidable late payment.
Questions borrowers commonly ask
Will one missed payment immediately garnish my wages?
No. A single missed federal payment starts delinquency the next day. Default generally occurs after 270 days for most federal loans, and Federal Student Aid describes possible involuntary collection after more than 360 days without resolving the default. Private-loan collection timing depends on the contract and law.
How many days late before a federal student loan is reported?
Federal Student Aid says the servicer reports delinquency when it reaches 90 days or more. Confirm your individual account status with the servicer.

Can the lender sue me over a private student loan?
A private lender may sue the borrower or cosigner within the applicable state limitation period. Whether it can do so, and when, depends on the contract and state law.
What if I can pay only part of the bill?
Contact the servicer before sending an amount that will not satisfy the scheduled payment. Ask how a partial payment is applied and whether an approved reduced-payment arrangement is available. An unsanctioned partial payment may not stop delinquency.
Should I ignore calls from a collection agency?
No. Verify the agency and debt through official account information, keep records, and ask the federal servicer or private lender what authority the agency has. Ignoring notices can remove opportunities to resolve the account before stronger collection measures are used.
Bottom line
Missing a payment is a warning stage, not an instant financial catastrophe, but delay makes the available remedies narrower. Federal delinquency starts the day after the due date, credit reporting may begin at 90 days, and most federal loans default at 270 days. Private loans can move on a different schedule. Check the account, contact the organization servicing it, and obtain a specific plan to become current or enter an approved relief option.
