At the instant of the split, the intended result is usually no change in the market value or percentage ownership of your position. Prices can move afterward, and broker processing, fractional shares, dividends and listed options require separate checks.
Ordinary shares and options do not receive identical treatment. A stock split changes your share count and the quoted price. An option contract may receive a new symbol, a different share deliverable, an adjusted strike or multiplier, and sometimes cash in lieu. Your issuer notice, broker corporate-action notice and the exact Options Clearing Corporation (OCC) memo for the event control the details.

What a stock split changes—and what it does not
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov glossary defines a stock split as “an increase in the number of shares of a corporation’s stock without a change in the shareholders’ equity.” In practical terms, the company changes the number of units into which the same proportional ownership is divided.
For a forward split, multiply your old share count by the split’s first number and divide the market price by the same ratio. In the SEC’s two-for-one example, 100 shares at $100 become 200 shares at about $50. The arithmetic value is $10,000 before and approximately $10,000 immediately after, before any market movement, fees or broker adjustments.

A reverse split uses the reciprocal direction. In a one-for-ten reverse split, every 10 old shares become one new share. A holder with 10,000 shares would have 1,000 shares after the conversion. The quoted price is intended to rise by roughly ten times, but the split itself does not create a gain or protect you from a later decline.
| Feature | Forward split | Reverse split |
|---|---|---|
| Share count | Increases by the split ratio | Decreases by the ratio, such as 10 old shares for 1 new share |
| Quoted price per share | Adjusted downward by the same ratio | Adjusted upward by the reciprocal ratio |
| Percentage ownership | Unchanged by the split itself | Unchanged by the split itself, apart from any separate cancellation or issuance terms |
| Per-share dividend presentation | Normally decreases proportionately | Normally increases proportionately |
| Fractional-share issue | Can arise in plans or accounts that already hold fractions | Common when the old balance is not an exact multiple of the ratio; cash in lieu may apply |
| Listed options | May retain standard economics or receive an event-specific adjustment | Often requires close review of symbol, deliverable, multiplier and cash terms |
The continuity is an intended economic starting point, not a promise about the next trading session. Supply and demand, investor expectations, liquidity, listing requirements and the company’s underlying results can move the post-split price.
Forward splits: how your shares are converted
Reading the ratio
A two-for-one split means one old share is exchanged for two new shares. A three-for-two split would exchange two old shares for three new shares. Apply the stated ratio to the exact position in each account; do not assume that a cash account, retirement account and dividend-reinvestment account will display the conversion at the same moment.

Why the lower quote is not an immediate loss
The lower per-share quote is paired with the larger share count. If you owned 100 shares at $100 and the price is adjusted to about $50 in a two-for-one split, the position still represents roughly the same $10,000 at the instant of conversion. A market move after that point is separate from the mechanical adjustment.
Reverse splits, fractional entitlements and cash in lieu
Converting an uneven balance
In a one-for-ten reverse split, a balance of 37 old shares mathematically represents 3.7 new shares. The issuer’s plan determines how the 0.7-share entitlement is handled. Investor.gov notes that some reverse splits pay cash in lieu of the fractional share. That payment can close a small residual position even though the holder did not submit a sell order.
What cash in lieu means
Cash in lieu is a payment for the fractional entitlement rather than an additional partial share. The amount is based on the terms and pricing method in the issuer or broker notice; there is no universal amount or posting time. Check whether the notice uses a market-price calculation, a specified valuation date or another method.

Price volatility after the action
A reverse split can be followed by substantial volatility. The higher displayed price is a mathematical adjustment, not evidence that the company’s operations improved. Review the issuer’s reason for the action, its record and effective dates, and any separate listing or financing announcements before treating the new quote as a performance result.

Dividends after a split
Per-share rate versus total entitlement
For a forward split, the issuer ordinarily expresses the dividend at a lower per-share rate. If the pre-split dividend was $1 per share and the company completed a two-for-one split, the post-split rate would ordinarily be expressed as $0.50 per share, subject to the issuer’s actual declaration. You own twice as many shares, so the aggregate dividend for a full-share position can remain economically equivalent when the declared rate is adjusted as expected.
A reverse split generally moves the per-share presentation in the opposite direction because each new share represents multiple old shares. The actual dividend is controlled by the issuer’s declaration; a split does not guarantee that any dividend will continue.
Record dates, ex-dates and payment dates
The total amount you receive depends on the declared rate, the number of shares recognized on the record date and the issuer’s payment terms. A split’s effective date and a dividend’s record date can fall close together, so read the issuer notice rather than relying on a trading-app estimate. A broker may show an adjusted dividend estimate before the final corporate-action entry posts.
Fractional shares and reinvestment plans
Investor.gov says fractional owners generally participate in splits and dividends according to the fraction of a whole share they own. In a dividend-reinvestment or fractional-share account, the broker’s plan rules determine whether the account displays additional fractional units, pays cash, or combines both approaches. The same broker can apply different procedures to a direct-reinvestment plan and to ordinary brokerage holdings.

What happens to call and put options
The normal contract is only the starting point
The OCC states that each standard equity-option contract covers 100 shares of the underlying security. That convention applies to an unadjusted contract. The OCC also explains that corporate actions—including stock dividends, rights offerings and mergers—can produce adjusted contracts representing something other than 100 shares.
Why a symbol or contract size can change
An option adjustment is designed to preserve the contract’s economic obligations as closely as the corporate action permits, but the result is event-specific. The OCC may change the option symbol, strike economics, multiplier, deliverable or cash-in-lieu component. A chain that shows a suffix or a nonstandard deliverable is not necessarily an error; it may identify the adjusted series created for that event.
The OCC one-for-four example
In OCC Information Memo 55470 (2024), a one-for-four reverse split changed the option symbol from SH to SH1 and set a deliverable of 25 shares per contract. The memo defined the adjusted underlying as 0.25 times the old SH price. This illustrates why multiplying an adjusted option by the familiar 100-share assumption can produce the wrong exposure.
How to verify your own contract
- Record the underlying symbol, option symbol, expiration, strike, call-or-put designation and number of contracts before the effective date.
- Read the issuer’s corporate-action notice for the split ratio, record date, ex-date and effective date.
- Find the OCC information memo for that security and event. Confirm the adjusted symbol, strike treatment, multiplier, deliverable and any cash-in-lieu language.
- Compare those terms with the broker’s position display. Allow for operational posting delays before concluding that a contract is missing or mispriced.
- Save the memo, broker notice, trade confirmations and statements with your tax records.
A practical timeline for checking your account
Before the effective date
- Write down each account’s share quantity, fractional balance, cost basis and option contract details.
- Locate the issuer’s announcement and identify the ratio, record date, ex-date and effective date.
- Note whether the issuer’s notice describes cash in lieu, a minimum cash-out threshold or special treatment for registered holders.
On the effective date
- Expect the quote and historical chart to be adjusted, but do not treat the first displayed price as a performance measurement.
- Check whether the share quantity, option symbol and contract deliverable have posted.
- Do not exercise or close an unfamiliar option until you understand the adjusted deliverable and settlement terms.
After posting
- Reconcile the new quantity and market value with the split ratio.
- Check dividend records against the issuer’s declared rate and record-date rules.
- Look for a separate cash-in-lieu entry if the reverse split created a fractional entitlement.
- Contact the broker’s corporate-actions desk with the exact security, account, effective date and OCC memo number if entries do not reconcile.
Cost basis, tax forms and recordkeeping
A split normally reallocates an existing tax basis across the new number of shares rather than creating a new economic investment. The exact basis calculation, holding-period treatment and taxation of cash in lieu depend on your jurisdiction, account type and transaction history. Do not assume that a broker’s provisional basis display is the final tax answer.

The OCC states that it publishes IRS Form 8937 information for certain equity-option and security-futures adjustments when the number of contracts increases, typically for integer splits or distributions. That publication can document an adjustment, but it does not determine every investor’s tax result.
Retain statements showing the original lots, split conversion, adjusted lots, option notices and any cash-in-lieu payment. Ask a qualified tax professional about the treatment that applies to your country, state and account, especially when a fractional share is paid out or an adjusted option is closed.
Answers to the questions investors ask most
Do I lose money when a stock splits?
The mechanical conversion is intended to preserve the position’s proportional value at that instant. You can still gain or lose money when the market price changes afterward, and a reverse split can be followed by volatility.

Will my dividend be cut after a forward split?
The per-share rate is ordinarily reduced in proportion to the increase in shares. In the two-for-one, $1-to-$0.50 example, the lower rate accompanies twice as many shares. The issuer must make the actual declaration, and your total entitlement depends on the record-date shares and payment terms.
Why did my option symbol change?
The OCC can assign a new symbol to identify an adjusted contract with a different deliverable, multiplier or other terms. Read the event-specific OCC memo instead of assuming the contract still represents 100 shares.
What happens to a fractional share in a reverse split?
The issuer may pay cash in lieu, as Investor.gov notes for some reverse splits. The notice controls the valuation and timing, and the payment can eliminate a small residual position.
Bottom line for each type of holding
For ordinary shares, multiply or divide the quantity by the stated ratio and expect the quoted price to move inversely. For dividends, evaluate the per-share declaration together with your new share count and the record date. For options, ignore assumptions based solely on the 100-share convention: verify the adjusted symbol, strike economics, multiplier, deliverable and cash terms in the OCC memo and broker notice. Preserve every statement and notice so the conversion, dividend and tax records can be reconciled after the account finishes posting the action.
