What Happens to Your Savings When a Bank Fails?

If a U.S. bank insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) fails, eligible deposits are protected up to the applicable insurance limit. The FDIC either transfers insured accounts to a healthy acquiring bank or pays insured balances directly. Your result depends on the bank’s resolution method, how your accounts are titled, and whether your total in an ownership category exceeds the limit.

Most customers eventually receive all insured principal and interest accrued through the failure date. Amounts above the applicable limit become claims in the failed bank’s receivership, so they are not guaranteed to be recovered in full.

What FDIC insurance does when a bank fails

The FDIC has two roles after an FDIC-insured bank closes: insurer of eligible deposits and receiver of the failed bank. As insurer, it determines which deposits are covered and pays or transfers the insured amount. As receiver, it gathers the failed bank’s assets, resolves creditor claims and distributes recoveries when available.

“FDIC deposit insurance covers the balance of each depositor’s account, dollar-for-dollar, up to the insurance limit, including principal and any accrued interest through the date of the insured bank’s closing.”

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation depositor fact sheet

Insurance applies only to eligible deposits held at an FDIC-insured bank. It does not insure losses caused by the failure of a nonbank company. Identify the institution that actually holds your money and verify its FDIC-insured status rather than relying on the name of an app, brokerage or financial service.

How much of your savings is insured?

The standard limit

The standard limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each ownership category. The limit includes principal and interest credited through the date the bank closes. It is not a separate allowance for every account number, product or branch.

Accounts are combined within a category

Checking and savings accounts owned by one person in that person’s name at the same bank are generally added together in the single-owner category. For example, $180,000 in checking plus $100,000 in savings produces $280,000 in the category: $250,000 is insured and the remaining $30,000 is an uninsured receivership claim, subject to whatever the receivership ultimately recovers.

Branches do not create extra coverage. A single bank operating in several cities is still one insured bank for this calculation. Deposits at separate FDIC-insured banks are evaluated separately, provided the institutions are genuinely separate insured entities.

Ownership category changes the calculation

Coverage is calculated separately for recognized ownership categories, each with its own requirements. Categories commonly include:

  • Single-owner accounts.
  • Joint accounts, when the owners and withdrawal rights satisfy FDIC rules.
  • Certain retirement accounts, including eligible individual retirement accounts.
  • Revocable and irrevocable trust accounts, subject to beneficiary and documentation rules.
  • Business accounts owned by corporations, partnerships and other eligible entities.
  • Employee-benefit plan accounts.
  • Government accounts.

Changing the account title does not automatically create a new insured category. Joint, trust, retirement and business coverage depends on the legal ownership, beneficiaries, number of qualifying owners and records maintained by the bank. If your balances or ownership documents are complicated, use the FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE) and review the FDIC account-category guidance.

What happens immediately after the bank closes?

The FDIC announces a resolution

When regulators close a bank, the FDIC determines how to resolve it. The two outcomes that matter to depositors are a purchase-and-assumption transaction or a direct FDIC payoff. The resolution announcement identifies the acquiring bank, if there is one, and explains how customers will access funds.

Most often, a healthy bank assumes the deposits

In a purchase-and-assumption transaction, a healthy bank takes over the failed bank’s insured deposits and usually opens the accounts for customers. You become a depositor of the acquiring bank and use its branches, website, cards and other channels according to its instructions. Branches often reopen on the next business day, and checks may continue to process.

The acquiring bank is not required to preserve the failed bank’s interest rates, fees or account terms. It may issue new account numbers, checks or deposit slips, and it sets the rate paid after the failure. Read the acquiring bank’s notices before assuming that an automatic renewal, overdraft setting or fee schedule remains unchanged.

If no bank assumes the deposits, the FDIC pays directly

When no institution takes the deposits, the FDIC calculates each depositor’s insured balance and makes a direct payoff, usually by check. Accounts are frozen while the insurance calculation is completed. Checks and payment requests presented after closure can be returned unpaid, even when the underlying money is insured.

Issue Acquiring-bank resolution Direct FDIC payoff
How you receive insured funds Insured deposits move to an acquiring bank account. The FDIC pays the insured balance directly, usually by check.
Access and payment continuity Branches and account services often resume quickly; direct deposits and checks generally continue through the acquirer. Accounts are frozen for the calculation; checks or payment requests may be returned.
Interest after failure The acquirer sets the post-failure rate and restarts accrual under its terms. Interest stops at the failure date.
Account terms The acquirer may change rates, fees, account numbers, checks and deposit slips. No continuing deposit account exists unless another arrangement is offered.

When can you expect to receive your money?

The FDIC states that its goal is to make insurance payments within two business days of an insured institution’s failure. That is a goal, not a universal deadline. Straightforward accounts may be handled quickly, while ownership questions, incomplete records, disputed beneficiaries or balances requiring additional documentation can take longer.

In an acquisition, access may be available through the acquiring bank rather than through a separate FDIC payment. Follow the closure notice for the exact opening date, temporary access arrangements and identification requirements. Do not assume that a weekend or holiday counts as a business day.

What happens to direct deposits?

When a bank is acquired

Direct deposits, including Social Security and other government annuity payments, are generally redirected to the acquiring bank. Confirm the new routing and account information in the acquirer’s notice, but avoid cancelling a payment that has already been redirected unless the bank instructs you to do so.

When the FDIC pays directly

If there is no acquiring bank, the FDIC may arrange for a nearby bank to handle direct deposits temporarily. The arrangement and timing depend on the resolution. Contact the paying agency and the FDIC using the instructions in the official closure notice if a scheduled deposit does not appear.

What happens to checks and automatic payments?

In an acquisition, checks may continue to clear and recurring electronic payments often continue through the new bank. The acquirer can nevertheless issue replacement checks or change account details, so update merchants when instructed.

In a direct payoff, checks and electronic payment requests presented after closure may be returned because the account is frozen. You remain responsible for rent, loan payments, utilities, taxes and other obligations. Arrange another source of funds immediately and ask each biller about returned-payment fees or grace periods. Keep records showing that the failure caused the interruption.

What happens to interest and account rates?

The insurance calculation includes interest accrued through the failure date, but not interest that would have accrued afterward. If an acquiring bank takes the deposits, it establishes the new rate and begins accruing interest under its account agreement. Rates can be higher or lower than before. You may withdraw insured funds without an early-withdrawal penalty if you do not accept the acquiring bank’s terms.

With a direct payoff, interest does not continue after the failure date because the deposit account no longer operates. Any amount above the insured balance is handled as a receivership claim rather than as an interest-bearing deposit.

What happens to savings above the insurance limit?

Uninsured money is not automatically declared worthless, but it is not guaranteed. The excess becomes a claim against the receivership. The FDIC sells or manages the failed bank’s assets, pays claims according to applicable priority rules and may issue receivership dividends as recoveries permit. The final recovery can be less than the full excess and can take time.

Do not subtract the $250,000 limit from every account independently. First total accounts in the same ownership category at the same insured bank, then determine the insured and uninsured portions. A separate category may provide additional coverage only when its legal requirements are actually met.

How to protect access to your money before a failure

  1. Verify the institution. Confirm which legal bank holds each deposit and whether that bank is FDIC-insured.
  2. List every account and owner. Record titles, beneficiaries, balances, account numbers and the bank’s legal name.
  3. Calculate by category and bank. Combine accounts within each category at each bank; do not count branches as separate institutions.
  4. Use EDIE for complex structures. Check trust, joint, retirement, business and employee-benefit arrangements against the FDIC’s category rules.
  5. Keep a payment backup. Maintain another way to cover essential bills if an account is temporarily frozen or a check is returned.
  6. Save current statements and documents. Statements, trust instruments, beneficiary records and business ownership documents can help establish coverage promptly.

What to do after your bank closes

  1. Read the official FDIC and acquiring-bank notice. It will state whether deposits were transferred, where to obtain funds and which services remain available.
  2. Protect your identity. Use only contact information in the official notice; do not provide account credentials to unsolicited callers or websites.
  3. Confirm essential transactions. Check payroll, benefits, bill payments, checks and pending transfers. Replace payment instructions if the notice requires it.
  4. Document uninsured claims. Keep statements and correspondence showing balances above the applicable limit and follow receivership instructions for filing or updating a claim.
  5. Review new terms. Compare the acquiring bank’s rate, fees, maturity dates and withdrawal rules before leaving funds in the new account.
  6. Escalate ownership questions. Provide requested trust, retirement, joint-account or business records promptly if the FDIC cannot determine coverage from the bank’s files.

Common account situations

Several personal accounts at one bank

Checking, savings and money-market deposit accounts owned solely by you are generally combined in the single category. Multiple account numbers do not multiply the standard limit.

Accounts at two different insured banks

The limit is applied separately at each FDIC-insured bank. Confirm that the names and legal entities are different; two brands or branches may still belong to one insured institution.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

A joint account

Joint coverage depends on qualifying co-owners and equal withdrawal rights under FDIC rules. Do not assume that merely adding a second name creates the full joint-category amount.

An IRA or other retirement deposit

Eligible retirement deposits are evaluated in their own category, separate from a person’s single-owner deposits. Eligibility and account documentation matter.

A trust or business account

Trust beneficiaries, business legal ownership and bank records determine how coverage is calculated. Review the category guidance and use EDIE rather than relying on the account label alone.

Bottom line for depositors

For an FDIC-insured U.S. bank, eligible savings are protected up to the applicable limit, including interest through the failure date. Expect either a transfer to a healthy bank or a direct FDIC payment; the resolution determines how quickly checks, direct deposits and account access continue. Keep ownership records, calculate balances by category and bank, and prepare an alternate way to pay bills so a temporary freeze does not become a missed obligation.
