Changing financial advisors does not, by itself, sell your investments or move your account. You can usually leave the assets at the existing brokerage and work with a different professional, or instruct a new firm to transfer the account. Eligible securities often move in kind, while holdings the new firm cannot custody may need a separate solution and, in some cases, a sale. Before signing transfer paperwork, compare services and total fees, verify that every holding is accepted, and ask a tax professional about any proposed liquidation. After the move, reconcile positions, cash and cost-basis data with your old statements.
The guidance below is U.S.-focused. Transfer rules, available account types, fees and tax outcomes depend on your firms, investments and account registration.

What changes when your advisor leaves
You can stay at the current firm
An advisor’s departure does not require you to follow that person. FINRA says you may keep the account where it is and accept a newly assigned broker or choose another professional at the same firm. Ask who will service the account, whether your investment policy or contact process changes, and whether the firm will honor existing instructions. FINRA’s investor guidance recommends clarifying those arrangements rather than assuming that service will continue unchanged.
You can transfer custody to another firm
If you prefer the departing advisor’s new firm, the account can generally be moved through a brokerage transfer. The receiving firm normally starts the process; the old firm still has to deliver the assets and resolve any exceptions. Moving custody is separate from changing your investment strategy, although a new advisor may propose trades or a different account type.

Your holdings do not all receive the same treatment
Transfer eligibility is determined security by security and account by account. A receiving firm may accept listed stocks, bonds, mutual funds or cash but reject a proprietary fund, restricted security, fractional share or another position it does not support. Ask for a written list of exceptions before authorizing anything to be sold.
Stay or transfer? Compare the real choices
Do not frame the decision as automatically following the advisor. Compare the service you will receive, the account structure and the total cost of each option.

| Decision area | Keep assets at current firm | Transfer to the new firm |
|---|---|---|
| Service | Confirm who will be assigned, how to contact them and whether you may select another professional. | Read the signed advisory or brokerage agreement to identify the services, monitoring and advice included. |
| Investment eligibility | Your existing positions remain subject to the current firm’s account arrangements. | Verify that the receiving firm can custody every position, including proprietary, restricted or unsupported assets. |
| One-time disruption | There is no transfer process, but service or account terms may change after the advisor leaves. | Expect paperwork, possible rejected instructions and a period when trading or withdrawals may be limited. |
| One-time charges | Ask whether any account or service change has an associated charge. | Ask both firms about termination, transfer, account-opening and liquidation charges. |
| Ongoing price | Confirm advisory, custody, trading, margin and other account costs under the existing arrangement. | Compare the new advisory or brokerage fee basis, transaction charges, cash-sweep terms and other recurring costs. |
| Tax and records | No sale occurs merely because the advisor changed; review any proposed trades or registration changes. | Determine whether any holding must be sold and confirm that tax-lot and basis information arrives with the transfer. |
A fee-based advisory account and a transaction-based brokerage account can charge in different ways and provide different services. SEC guidance on Regulation Best Interest and FINRA’s account-type guidance both emphasize evaluating the actual services and total costs, not relying on the label alone.
How a brokerage transfer works
- Choose the receiving firm and confirm eligibility. Before moving anything, ask whether it accepts your account registration and each security, fund, option, alternative investment or cash position. Ask what will happen to any exception.
- Complete the receiving firm’s transfer instruction form. Use the exact legal name, account number, registration and delivery instructions shown on the old statement. Keep a signed copy. Incomplete or inaccurate information is a common reason for rejection or delay.
- The receiving firm submits the request. For participating brokerage firms, it enters the instruction into the Automated Customer Account Transfer Service (ACATS) and communicates with the delivering firm. The SEC summarizes the process this way: “All transfers start and end with your new firm.” That sentence describes where the customer initiates and completes the process; the old firm still has required responsibilities.
- The delivering firm reviews and responds. It validates the account, addresses unpaid maintenance charges or other exceptions, and sends eligible assets. You may be asked to correct a mismatch or provide additional documentation.
- Handle unsupported positions deliberately. If a security cannot move, ask whether it can remain temporarily at the old firm, be transferred to another custodian or be sold. Do not authorize a liquidation simply to make the paperwork easier until you understand the tax and market consequences.
- Confirm completion at the receiving firm. Wait for the first statement and compare it with the last statement from the old firm before treating the transfer as finished.
How long the move takes—and why it may take longer
The SEC says a clean ACATS transfer should take no more than six business days from the time the new firm enters the form into ACATS. This is general guidance for an uncomplicated transfer between participating firms, not a guarantee for every account or asset. The clock does not necessarily begin when you sign the form.

- Incorrect, incomplete or mismatched instructions can cause rejection and a restart.
- Unpaid maintenance fees or unresolved account restrictions may have to be cleared.
- The receiving firm may not support one or more assets.
- Changing ownership, beneficiaries or account type at the same time can require additional review.
- An institution outside ACATS may use a different process and timetable.
Stay in contact with both firms. Ask which firm currently owns the next action, what exception was recorded and exactly what document or correction will clear it. No published source establishes a reliable average for transfer fees, taxable sales or delays, so treat any firm-specific estimate as an estimate rather than a universal result.
In-kind transfer versus selling investments
In-kind movement
When an eligible security is delivered without being sold, ownership of the position changes custodianship rather than creating a sale transaction. The shares, bonds or fund units move to the new account, subject to the receiving firm’s rules. Market prices can still rise or fall while the transfer is pending, and trading access may be limited during processing.

Liquidation of an unsupported holding
If the new firm cannot hold a position, it may require a sale, a cash delivery or a separate account. A sale is a distinct taxable event for a taxable account and can create a gain or loss, as well as transaction costs and market exposure while you wait to reinvest. The tax result depends on the account, asset, holding period and your individual circumstances; changing advisors is neither automatically tax-free nor automatically taxable. Consult a tax professional before approving a sale.

Taxes, cost basis and transfer records
For specified covered securities, the IRS instructions for Form 1099-B (2026) describe transfer statements that generally carry adjusted basis and the original acquisition date from the transferor to the receiving broker, subject to exceptions. The receiving broker generally uses information supplied on that statement unless it is incomplete or known to be incorrect. See the IRS 2026 instructions for Form 1099-B for the reporting rules.

That reporting system does not replace your own records. Older positions and noncovered securities may have incomplete or different reporting requirements. Preserve prior statements, trade confirmations and records of reinvested dividends, corporate actions and inherited or gifted property. Once the new account is open, check each tax lot’s basis and acquisition date; report errors promptly while the old firm can still investigate them.
Fees and service changes to identify before signing
Request both firms’ current schedules in writing and compare like for like. Potential one-time costs include an outgoing transfer fee, account-termination charge, account-opening fee and a liquidation charge for an unsupported position. Ongoing costs can include an advisory percentage, commissions or transaction charges, custody or platform fees, margin interest and the economics of the cash-sweep option.
Also compare non-price terms: minimum balances, withdrawal rules, automatic investment instructions, beneficiary handling, research or planning services, frequency of reviews and whether the account is advisory or brokerage. A lower headline percentage can still cost more if the new arrangement adds transaction charges or removes services you use.

A practical before, during and after checklist
Before you authorize a move
- Ask the current firm who will service the account if you stay and whether you can select another professional.
- Ask the receiving firm for a position-by-position eligibility review, including account registration and any assets that would need separate handling.
- Compare both agreements and fee schedules, including transfer, termination, liquidation, advisory, transaction and cash-sweep terms.
- Identify any proposed sale, account-type change or ownership change and obtain personal tax advice before approving it.
- Download the latest statements and cost-basis information from the old firm.
While the transfer is pending
- Submit the receiving firm’s form exactly as requested and retain the confirmation number and a copy.
- Ask for status updates from both firms, especially if a rejection, residual cash balance or unsupported asset appears.
- Keep enough accessible cash elsewhere for near-term obligations if trading or withdrawals may be restricted during processing.
After the receiving account opens
- Compare the first new statement with the final old statement for every position, share quantity, cash balance and pending transaction.
- Review tax lots, adjusted basis and acquisition dates, and preserve records for positions that are older or reported as noncovered.
- Verify beneficiaries, recurring transfers, dividend reinvestment, margin settings and cash-sweep elections.
- Report missing assets or incorrect data to the receiving firm immediately and keep written records of the correction.
When to pause the transfer
Pause and seek clarification if the receiving firm cannot explain where an unsupported security will go, if the paperwork changes your account registration without your intent, if a proposed sale has an unexplained tax consequence, or if the fee schedule is materially different from the agreement you were shown. You are not required to move assets merely because an advisor changed firms. A complete comparison of service, eligibility, cost and records is safer than treating the advisor relationship as inseparable from the account.
