Leaving a job does not automatically carry every workplace insurance benefit to your next employer. Your former health plan usually ends when your eligibility ends, but the exact date and your replacement options depend on the plan documents, the reason you left, your new employer’s rules and the country where you work. Ask human resources or the plan administrator for the final day of coverage before your employment ends, then compare continuation and replacement cover before a gap occurs.
This guide focuses on United States rules unless a section is expressly marked France. Health insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, dental cover and vision cover can all follow different rules.

Start with the one date that controls everything
Do not assume that insurance ends on your last day in the office. Some plans end on the last day worked; others continue through the end of that calendar month or use another eligibility rule. Washington State’s insurance regulator, for example, says employer health coverage generally ends on the last day worked or at month-end, depending on the arrangement. That is state-specific guidance, not a nationwide rule.

Check the Summary Plan Description, insurance certificate, benefits portal and any termination notice. Keep copies of the documents and record the name and date of every conversation. A confirmed end date lets you identify whether a new plan’s waiting period creates a gap.
What usually happens to U.S. health insurance
The U.S. Department of Labor says a worker is usually no longer eligible for the former employer’s group health plan after leaving the job. Losing eligibility does not mean you have no alternatives: depending on the circumstances, you may be able to join another employer plan, use a spouse’s plan, elect COBRA continuation or obtain individual-market or government coverage.
When COBRA may apply
COBRA is a federal continuation option for qualifying group health plans. It generally applies to plans sponsored by employers with at least 20 employees in the previous year, subject to the law’s conditions. A termination of employment other than for gross misconduct, or a reduction in hours that causes loss of coverage, can be a qualifying event. The plan’s notice must confirm whether your event qualifies; do not assume that every resignation, dismissal or leave arrangement does.

How long COBRA lasts
For a qualifying termination or reduction in hours, the general maximum continuation period is 18 months. Other qualifying events or circumstances can produce different periods. The continuation is temporary: it preserves the group plan’s benefits for the permitted period rather than making you a permanent member of the former employer’s plan.
What COBRA costs
You generally pay the full cost of the coverage yourself, plus an administrative charge of up to 2%—as much as 102% of the plan’s cost. That can be substantially more than the payroll deduction you paid while employed because the employer’s contribution is no longer subsidising your share. Compare the actual COBRA premium with every replacement option, including the cost of covering dependants.

Election and payment deadlines
The election notice and plan documents control the dates. Read them immediately, because missing an election or payment deadline can end the opportunity to continue the group plan. Confirm when coverage is effective, whether it is retroactive to the loss date after a timely election, and when the first premium is due. The plan administrator—not a general online summary—can give you the binding dates for your case.
Other U.S. ways to avoid a health-insurance gap
COBRA is only one route. Compare the alternatives by start date, total premium, covered services, provider network, dependant eligibility, waiting periods and the deadline to apply.

| New employer’s plan | A worker who meets the new employer’s eligibility rules | Eligibility date, waiting period, benefits, network and dependant rules | Ask when deductions begin and whether coverage can start before the first day of work. A waiting period may generally be up to 90 days from the date you become eligible under the cited Department of Labor guidance. |
| Special enrollment in a spouse’s or other eligible employer plan | Someone who loses other qualifying coverage and meets the receiving plan’s rules | Whether the loss qualifies, which family members can enroll and the plan’s effective date | The Department of Labor describes a general 30-day window to request special enrollment after losing eligibility. Confirm the exact deadline with the receiving plan. |
| COBRA continuation | An eligible beneficiary after a qualifying event under a covered group plan | Qualifying event, election notice, maximum period and covered benefits | You may pay up to 102% of plan cost. Confirm the election and payment deadlines and the coverage start date. |
| Individual Marketplace or governmental coverage | People who meet the relevant program’s eligibility rules after losing job-based cover | Enrollment window, effective date, subsidy or program rules, network and covered services | Ask the program for the exact application deadline and when the policy starts; do not rely on the former employer’s dates. |
Check for a waiting-period gap
Suppose your former plan ends on the last day of the month and the new employer’s plan starts only after its eligibility waiting period. Compare those dates before declining COBRA or another interim option. A temporary continuation policy can bridge the interval, but only if its election and payment requirements are met. If the dates overlap, compare the extra premium against the value of uninterrupted access and the risk of changing networks mid-treatment.
Compare more than the monthly premium
A lower premium may come with a narrower provider network, different covered services, higher out-of-pocket exposure or a different dependant rule. Confirm that your doctors, hospitals, prescriptions and ongoing treatments are covered. Ask whether waiting periods apply to particular benefits and whether claims already in progress are handled under the old or new plan. The Department of Labor specifically recommends comparing premiums, covered benefits, provider access and waiting periods when evaluating a prospective employer plan.

Changing jobs while keeping the same employer plan
If you move between positions within the same organisation, eligibility may continue, but a change from full-time to part-time work can be treated like a loss of eligibility. Ask whether the new role remains in the same plan, moves you to another tier or triggers a reduction-hours qualifying event. Do not treat an internal transfer as automatically harmless: the plan’s eligibility definition and the date payroll changes take effect control.
Life insurance is not covered by COBRA
COBRA concerns qualifying group health coverage. The Department of Labor states that it does not cover a plan providing only life insurance or disability benefits. When employment ends, those benefits therefore require a separate review.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Ask about portability and conversion
Some life or disability policies may offer a portability feature (continuing group coverage personally) or a conversion feature (changing to an individual policy). The available rule is not universal: rights, underwriting requirements, prices and deadlines come from the specific policy and certificate. Contact the insurer and HR promptly and ask:
- Does this exact policy offer portability, conversion or neither?
- What is the application deadline measured from the last day of employment or coverage?
- Must the application be submitted before active coverage ends?
- Will medical underwriting or evidence of insurability be required?
- What premium, benefit amount, exclusions and payment method would apply?
Request the answer in writing. Missing a short conversion deadline can remove an option that cannot be restored later. If you have dependants who rely on the benefit, include their needs in the decision rather than reviewing only your own coverage.

Dental, vision and other workplace benefits
Dental and vision plans may be included in a continuation election or may have separate termination and conversion rules. The same is true of accident, critical-illness and other voluntary benefits. Read each certificate and ask whether the benefit is part of the health plan or a separate contract. A health continuation election does not automatically continue every benefit deducted from your former paycheque.

- Six to eight weeks before departure, if possible: ask HR for the active-coverage end date, plan documents, dependant rules and continuation notices.
- List your current cover: health, dental, vision, life, disability and any voluntary policies. Record policy numbers, beneficiaries, covered dependants and regular treatments.
- Get the new employer’s terms: request the eligibility date, waiting period, employee and dependant premiums, provider network and plan summary before accepting the job if possible.
- Identify every enrollment route: new-employer enrollment, a spouse’s special enrollment, COBRA and individual or governmental coverage.
- Build a date comparison: place the old plan’s end date, each election deadline, each payment deadline and each replacement plan’s effective date on one calendar.
- Price the real coverage: compare the total premium, deductible or other cost-sharing information shown in the plan documents, covered services, network and dependant access—not just the payroll deduction.
- Handle life and disability separately: ask the insurer about portability or conversion and submit any required forms before the stated deadline.
- Save proof: retain notices, submitted forms, confirmation numbers and payment receipts until the new coverage is active and claims are being processed normally.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Assuming the last working day is always the end date
Fix: obtain the plan-specific date in writing. Month-end termination is common in some arrangements, but it is not a universal rule.
Declining COBRA before checking the new plan’s start date
Fix: compare the dates first. A waiting period or delayed enrollment can leave you uninsured unless you elect an available bridge.
Believing COBRA covers life or disability insurance
Fix: contact each insurer separately about portability or conversion. COBRA does not extend plans that provide only those benefits.

Waiting for paperwork
Fix: ask HR and the plan administrator when notices will be issued and follow up before the deadline. Keep evidence of your requests.

France: a different portability framework
French rules illustrate why country matters. Service Public says a qualifying former employee receiving unemployment compensation may continue employer supplementary health and “prévoyance” benefits. The duration is tied to the period of unemployment benefit and the last employment period, with a maximum of 12 months. This is a French framework, not a rule that applies in the United States or elsewhere. Confirm eligibility and the exact end date with the employer, insurer and relevant unemployment-benefit authority.
Questions to put to HR or the insurer
- On what exact date does each benefit end?
- Is the date based on the last day worked, the end of the month or another event?
- Which dependants lose cover, and when?
- Does this event qualify for continuation or special enrollment?
- What is the total monthly cost, including any administrative charge?
- What are the election, application and first-payment deadlines?
- When would replacement coverage become effective?
- Does each life or disability policy offer portability or conversion?
- Where are the Summary Plan Description, certificate and formal notices?
The Bottom Line
Your insurance does not move automatically with you when you leave or change jobs. Confirm the exact end date, then compare the new employer’s plan, special enrollment, COBRA or individual coverage before a gap occurs. Review life, disability, dental and vision benefits separately because their continuation rights and deadlines can differ.
