For a gold loan in India, a fall in gold prices can increase your loan-to-value (LTV) ratio because the collateral is worth less while the outstanding debt may be unchanged. That does not automatically mean every lender will demand immediate extra money or auction the jewellery. The applicable response depends on the loan purpose, sanction date, your agreement and the lender’s policy.
The explanation below uses the Reserve Bank of India’s Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral Directions, 2025. Those directions had to be adopted as soon as possible and no later than 1 April 2026. A loan sanctioned before its lender adopted them remains governed by the earlier applicable framework until that adoption; the 2025 requirements are not automatically retroactive for every existing account.

What happens to your gold loan if gold prices fall?
When the reference value assigned to your pledged gold declines, the denominator in the LTV calculation becomes smaller. If your outstanding loan does not fall at the same time, your LTV rises. For covered consumption loans, the RBI framework requires the applicable LTV to be maintained throughout the tenor.

The lender’s credit policy must state what action follows an LTV breach. Your sanction letter, loan agreement, key fact statement, loan purpose and the date the lender adopted the directions determine what you must do.

Do not assume that a market-price move by itself cancels the loan, changes your interest rate or gives the lender an unrestricted right to seize the jewellery. Ask for the lender’s calculation and the contractual response in writing.
How LTV works when the gold price changes
Loan-to-value compares the amount owed with the current value assigned to the pledged collateral:
LTV = outstanding loan amount ÷ current eligible collateral value × 100

RBI’s definition uses the outstanding loan and the collateral value on that day. For a bullet-repayment loan, the calculation includes the total amount repayable at maturity, not merely the principal originally disbursed. That can make the relevant amount larger than a borrower expects if interest or other permitted amounts are due at maturity.
Illustrative calculation
Suppose an account has an amount considered outstanding for LTV purposes of ₹2,40,000 and the lender’s current eligible gold value is ₹3,00,000. The LTV is 80%. If the assessed gold value falls to ₹2,70,000 while the outstanding amount remains ₹2,40,000, the LTV becomes about 88.9%. These figures are an illustration of the formula, not a prediction of how any particular lender will act.

The relevant question is therefore not simply whether the jewellery’s resale price fell. It is which valuation method the lender used, which amount it treated as outstanding, and which maximum applies to your loan.
RBI’s maximum LTV limits for covered consumption loans
Under the 2025 directions, the maximum regulatory LTV is tiered by the total loan amount per borrower. The ratio is a ceiling, not a promise that a lender will advance that percentage. A lender may set a lower internal limit, and the applicable ratio must be maintained throughout the tenor.

| Up to ₹2.5 lakh | 85% | The outstanding amount cannot exceed 85% of the eligible collateral value under the covered consumption-loan rule. |
| More than ₹2.5 lakh and up to ₹5 lakh | 80% | The applicable ceiling is 80% for this band. |
| More than ₹5 lakh | 75% | The applicable ceiling is 75% above ₹5 lakh. |
These bands should not be applied indiscriminately to every gold-backed account. First establish whether the loan is a consumption loan covered by the 2025 table or an income-generating or otherwise differently classified facility. Older RBI material may show a 75% rule for particular lender classes; that older figure should not be presented as a universal current cap for every loan type.
How the lender values pledged gold
The 2025 directions prescribe a reference-price method rather than allowing an arbitrary value chosen at the branch. For the relevant purity, the lender uses the lower of:
- the preceding 30-day average closing price; or
- the closing price on the preceding day.
The source is the India Bullion and Jewellers Association or a SEBI-regulated commodity exchange, as applicable. If a direct price for the exact purity is unavailable, the lender uses the nearest available purity and adjusts it for the actual purity of your articles.

Only intrinsic metal value counts
Stones, gems and other non-metal components do not increase the collateral value used for the LTV calculation. The valuation is tied to the intrinsic value of the eligible metal after the permitted deductions, not to an emotional value, making charge or the retail price of a finished ornament.

Check the assay certificate
At the original assay, the borrower should be present. The lender must provide an assay certificate recording the purity, gross and net weights, deductions, condition and assessed value. Compare that certificate with the items held and with the value used in any later LTV statement. Lenders must publish their valuation method and price input on their websites, so request the exact date, purity rate and calculation used for your account.
Will the lender ask you to pay more after a price fall?
Possibly, but there is no single RBI-mandated automatic margin call for all borrowers. The directions require the lender’s credit policy to specify both the maximum LTV and the action to be taken if the prescribed ratio is breached. That action could be described in your agreement as a part-payment, settlement demand, additional compliance step or another contractual remedy.
Before sending money, ask the lender for four items in writing:
- the current outstanding amount, including how a bullet loan’s maturity amount was treated;
- the purity, weight and reference price used to value the gold;
- the resulting LTV and the maximum applicable to your loan; and
- the clause and deadline that apply if the lender says the ratio is above its permitted level.
Do not treat a telephone request as proof that a payment is legally due. Obtain a statement or email showing the calculation, the account number and the consequences of not curing the stated breach.

Options if your LTV has risen
Discuss the available paths with the lender and compare them on cash needed now, additional interest and fees, the effect on principal and LTV, the risk to the pledged jewellery, and whether the option is permitted by your existing agreement.
| Possible path | Immediate effect | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Part-payment | Reduces the outstanding balance and can lower LTV if accepted by the lender. | Check minimum amounts, charges and whether the payment is applied to principal, interest or fees. |
| Full settlement | Ends the debt and enables release of the collateral after the lender confirms all dues are paid. | Obtain a written foreclosure or settlement figure valid for the payment date. |
| Renewal | May extend the arrangement without immediate full repayment. | Available only where the lender permits it, the account is standard and the resulting LTV remains within the permissible limit. A bullet-loan renewal also requires accrued interest to be paid. |
| Top-up | May provide additional funds if sufficient collateral value remains. | It is not an entitlement. RBI permits it only on a formal borrower request, within the permissible LTV and when the account is standard. |
| Repayment from another source | Can prevent a breach from continuing or avoid recovery action. | Compare the other borrowing’s total cost and do not assume approval is guaranteed. |
Renewal or a top-up cannot be used to conceal an LTV problem. The lender must reassess the permissible amount under its policy and the applicable regulatory category.
Can the lender auction your gold because prices fell?
A price decline alone should not be described as an automatic auction trigger. The loan agreement must explain the circumstances that can lead to auction and the notice period for repayment or settlement. RBI’s 2025 directions require adequate notice before auction procedures begin. The official wording states: “A lender shall give adequate notice to the borrower(s)/ legal heir(s), as applicable, through available means of communication to repay or settle the loan dues prior to initiating the auction procedure.” This is paragraph 37 of the Reserve Bank of India’s Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral Directions, 2025.
If you receive an auction notice, check the account number, total dues, deadline, delivery method and the settlement instructions. Keep the notice, payment proof and every communication. Ask whether the lender has applied the contractually required notice period and whether a current LTV calculation is being used.
Auction reserve price and transparency
The reserve price must be at least 90% of the current value. After two failed auctions, the minimum reserve price is 85%. The lender must follow transparent auction requirements and tell you or your legal heir the full sale value and the dues adjusted against the account.

After the lender receives the full auction proceeds, any surplus must be refunded within seven working days. A shortfall may be recovered according to the loan agreement. The fact that an auction produces less than the debt does not automatically erase the remaining contractual liability.

After full repayment or settlement, the lender must return the pledged collateral on the same day and no later than seven working days. If a delay attributable to the lender exceeds that period, the directions provide compensation of ₹5,000 for each day beyond the prescribed timeline.
Obtain written confirmation that the account is settled and arrange collection of the jewellery. At handover, compare each item with the assay certificate, including purity, identifying marks, weight and condition. Report discrepancies immediately and keep a signed handover record.
Do the 2025 rules apply to an existing gold loan?
Not necessarily. Regulated entities had to adopt the 2025 directions as soon as possible and no later than 1 April 2026. A loan sanctioned before a particular lender adopted the directions remains under the prior applicable guidelines rather than automatically switching to every new requirement on the publication date.
Ask the lender to confirm the adoption date that applies to your account. Then compare it with the sanction date and read the agreement that was issued when the loan was booked. This date check is especially important before applying the 85%, 80% or 75% consumption-loan table to an older account.
A practical checklist when gold prices are falling
- Identify the loan category. Confirm whether the account is a covered consumption loan or an income-generating facility with different treatment.
- Confirm the dates. Record the sanction date and the lender’s adoption date for the 2025 directions.
- Request the calculation. Ask for the outstanding amount, gold purity and weight, reference price, eligible value and resulting LTV.
- Match the records. Compare the lender’s figures with the assay certificate and the valuation method published on its website.
- Read the breach clause. Find the required action, cure deadline, fees and auction trigger in the agreement and policy.
- Choose a response. Compare part-payment, settlement, permitted renewal, permitted top-up and repayment from another source by cost and collateral risk.
- If auction is threatened, preserve evidence. Keep notices, emails, call references and proof of every attempted payment.
- After settlement, verify return. Collect the gold within the prescribed timeline and check it against the assay certificate.
Why careful monitoring matters
In a 2024 review, RBI reported deficiencies among entities it examined, including weak LTV monitoring, valuation conducted without the customer present and gaps in auction transparency. Those observations describe practices found in the reviewed entities; they are not a finding that every lender or every branch has the same problem. They do show why borrowers should request the underlying calculation, attend or verify the assay process and retain auction and repayment records.
The central answer is straightforward: falling gold prices can push your LTV higher, but the practical consequence comes from the loan’s category, dates, contract and lender policy. Get the valuation and breach response in writing before deciding whether to part-pay, settle, renew or seek another repayment source.
