What happens to your EPF account if you do not transfer it after changing jobs?

Not transferring an old EPF balance does not, by itself, mean you lose the money. The balance remains associated with your previous member account, but your service record can be split between member IDs and become harder to reconcile. EPFO says transferring the balance to your current member ID carries forward past service, which can help when applying the five-year service test described in its FAQ for tax deducted at source (TDS) on withdrawal and the ten-year service threshold for pensionary benefits. Check your passbook and service history rather than assuming an account has disappeared.

What happens to the old EPF account after you change jobs?

When you join an employer covered by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), contributions normally go into a member account linked to your employment. A new employer may create another member ID under your Universal Account Number (UAN). If you do not submit a transfer claim, the contributions already made by the previous employer stay recorded against the earlier member account instead of being consolidated into the current one.

The official material reviewed for this question does not describe an old balance as automatically forfeited merely because you changed jobs and did not transfer it. Your first practical check should therefore be the EPFO passbook and service history for both employments. Confirm that the employee and employer contributions, interest entries and dates of service are visible before deciding whether anything is missing.

Leaving the accounts separate can still create administrative and financial complications. You may later need to demonstrate that service in two member IDs belongs to the same employment history, and a withdrawal or pension claim may require records from both accounts. A transfer places the past service under the current member ID and reduces that reconciliation work.

Why transferring the balance usually matters

It keeps service history together

EPFO’s 2020 Transfer Claims FAQ says that past service is transferred to the current member ID when a transfer is completed. That service history is more than a record-keeping detail: EPFO uses cumulative service for several eligibility and tax explanations. A transfer does not create extra months of service; it joins the periods already earned under different employers.

It can help with the five-year TDS threshold

The FAQ gives a general explanation that when total service exceeds five years, TDS is not charged on a provident-fund withdrawal. It also says combining past service may help a member cross that threshold. This is not a personal tax ruling. The result for an individual depends on the type of withdrawal, employment records, tax law in force at the time and whether the service can be evidenced. Treat the five-year point as a reason to preserve and consolidate records, then check current tax requirements before withdrawing.

It contributes toward the ten-year pension-service threshold

The same FAQ states that more than ten years of service makes a member eligible for pensionary benefits under the relevant EPFO framework. A split record does not necessarily erase earlier service, but it can leave you having to prove that the periods should be counted together. Completing a transfer makes the cumulative service visible in the current member account, subject to EPFO’s verification and the rules applicable to your case.

It simplifies future claims

With one current account showing the transferred balance and service, you have fewer passbooks and claim references to reconcile. That can matter when changing jobs repeatedly, correcting a date of joining or exit, responding to a mismatch in employer records or preparing a retirement claim. EPFO describes transferring PF with each job change as advisable for obtaining the full benefits of its social-security schemes.

Does an old account become inactive after 36 months?

Do not apply a blanket “three-year” rule to every untransferred job-change account. The official sources use 36 months in more than one context, and they come from different dates.

What the 2014 government answer said

A Government of India Lok Sabha answer from the 2014 Winter Session described accounts receiving no contribution for 36 continuous months as being classified as inoperative under the provisions discussed at that time. It identified changing employers without transferring the balance as one circumstance in which an old account could become inoperative. That is historical context; it is not, on its own, a determination of the current status of every account that has been untouched for three years.

What the EPFO 2025 agenda reproduces

An EPFO Executive Committee agenda dated 29 March 2025 reproduces paragraph 72(6) of the EPF Scheme. The passage concerns amounts that have become payable to a member who retired after age 55, migrated abroad permanently or died, where no withdrawal claim was filed within 36 months. It also reproduces paragraph 60(6), under which interest is not credited from the date an account becomes inoperative under that provision.

Those circumstances are narrower than an ordinary job change. They do not support a claim that every untransferred balance automatically stops earning interest exactly 36 months after the last contribution. For your account, rely on the current passbook and account status shown by EPFO. If the status or interest entries look inconsistent, raise the issue through EPFO’s official member-help or grievance channels.

How to transfer an old EPF account now

EPFO lists Form 13 as the transfer claim form. The exact screens and prompts can change, so follow the live member-services instructions while keeping the details below in mind.

  1. Collect the identifiers for both employments. Note the UAN, previous and current member IDs, employer names, dates of joining and exit, and the bank or identity details shown in your EPFO profile. Correct obvious profile mismatches before filing if the portal requires it.
  2. Inspect the records first. Sign in to EPFO member services and open the passbook and service-history views for the previous and current employments. Compare the contribution months, employer deposits, exits and interest entries. Save copies of statements that you may need if a record later has to be reconciled.
  3. Open the transfer-claim facility. Select the current transfer option identified with Form 13. The portal may ask you to select the previous member account and the destination account under your current employment. Review the account numbers and personal details before submitting.
  4. Authenticate and submit. Complete the identity or one-time-password checks requested by the live EPFO service. Retain the claim or tracking reference. Do not assume that submitting the form means the transfer has already posted to the current passbook.
  5. Monitor the claim and destination account. Use the official claim-status service and check the current member passbook for the transferred balance and service entry. Keep the old statement until the destination record agrees with it.
  6. Escalate a mismatch. If the previous account is not listed, the claim is rejected, an employer date is wrong or the transferred amount does not reconcile, use EPFO’s official member-help or grievance route. Include the UAN, member IDs, claim reference and copies of the relevant passbook pages. No universal processing time is established here, so avoid relying on an unofficial deadline.

What changed in the transfer process in 2025?

In a 25 April 2025 announcement, the Ministry of Labour and Employment said EPFO had removed employer approval from the majority of transfer claims in January 2025. The ministry then described revamped Form 13 functionality in which approval at the source, or transferor, office triggers automatic transfer to the destination account without separate destination-office approval.

The same announcement said the system provides a taxable and non-taxable component split to support TDS calculations. These are dated operational statements, not a guarantee that every claim will follow an identical path. Portal instructions, account data and the nature of a particular claim still control what you see. If your screen requests an approval or document that differs from this description, follow the current EPFO workflow and keep the resulting reference number.

Transfer versus leaving the balance where it is

Consideration Transfer to current account Leave balance in old account
Service record EPFO says past service is carried into the current member ID. Service can remain split across member IDs; verify that both periods are visible in EPFO records.
Five- and ten-year thresholds Consolidated service may help establish the five-year and ten-year thresholds described in the Transfer Claims FAQ. You may have to establish and reconcile past service across accounts when considering withdrawal or pension eligibility.
Administration Use Form 13, retain the claim reference and track the result through current EPFO services. Keep older passbooks and be prepared to reconcile an account that is not linked clearly to the current employment.
Interest information The old balance becomes visible in the current account after the transfer posts; verify the credited entries in the destination passbook. Do not assume a universal 36-month interest rule. The cited official sources describe different contexts and dates.

What happens to EPF interest if you do not transfer?

The safest answer is account-specific: inspect the actual passbook and status. An untransferred balance remains part of your EPF savings record, but the official materials cited here do not establish a current, universal interest rule for every dormant job-change account. The 2025 EPFO agenda’s no-interest language is tied to an account becoming inoperative under the reproduced provision, while the 2014 government answer describes an older no-contribution classification. Neither source justifies telling every former employee that interest stops after exactly three years.

EPFO’s 2020 FAQ included a compounding illustration in which an amount could double in approximately eight years if EPFO continued to provide at least 8.5% interest. That was an assumption for the illustration, not a current declared rate or a promise of a doubling date. Do not use it to forecast your own balance. Read the interest actually credited in your passbook and consult the current EPFO notices and applicable rules for the relevant period.

Should you withdraw instead of transferring?

Withdrawing merely to tidy up an old account can sacrifice the advantages of a continuous service record. Before choosing withdrawal, consider whether combining the old and new service affects the five-year TDS explanation in EPFO’s FAQ or your progress toward the ten-year pension-service threshold. A withdrawal can also have tax consequences that depend on your employment history, amount, timing, documentation and current law.

Do not treat the FAQ as individualized tax advice. If a withdrawal is necessary, check the current tax rules and the information requested on the claim, including any taxable and non-taxable components shown by the transfer system. Keep statements from both accounts so you can support the service and contribution history used in the calculation.

Common problems and practical fixes

The previous member ID does not appear

  • Compare the old and current passbooks to confirm that both employments are linked to the same UAN and that names, dates of birth and other identity fields match.
  • Check whether the previous employer recorded an exit date. An incomplete employment record can prevent the portal from presenting the account for transfer.
  • If the account still cannot be selected, submit the issue through EPFO’s official help or grievance route with both member IDs and documentary evidence.

The transfer shows as submitted but the amount is not visible

  • Use the official claim-status view and retain the tracking number.
  • Compare the source passbook with the destination passbook, including employer and employee contributions and interest entries.
  • Escalate only after checking that you are viewing the current member ID and the latest statement, then provide the mismatch details to EPFO.

Service dates or contributions are wrong

  • Record the exact month, amount and employer entry that differs; a specific discrepancy is easier to investigate than a general claim that the balance is missing.
  • Ask the former or current employer to correct an employment-data error when the portal directs you to do so, while also keeping the EPFO complaint reference.
  • Do not withdraw before the records are corrected if doing so could make it harder to demonstrate continuous service.

You are worried that the account has become inoperative

  • Read the status shown in the current EPFO passbook rather than relying on a 36-month rule found in an old explanation.
  • Identify whether your situation involves an ordinary job change or one of the specific circumstances described in the 2025 reproduced scheme text, such as retirement after age 55, permanent migration abroad or death.
  • Ask EPFO for an account-specific determination if the status or interest credit does not match your records.

A sensible decision checklist

  • Have you downloaded the passbook and service history for every employer?
  • Do the UAN, member IDs, joining dates and exit dates match?
  • Can you see all employee and employer contributions and credited interest?
  • Would combining service help you document five years for the tax explanation in EPFO’s FAQ or move you toward ten years for pensionary benefits?
  • Have you filed the current Form 13 transfer claim and saved its reference?
  • Have you checked the destination passbook after the claim status changes?
  • If a record is missing, have you used EPFO’s official member-help or grievance route instead of assuming the balance was forfeited?

Bottom line for a job changer

An old EPF balance is not described by the cited official sources as disappearing simply because you did not transfer it after changing jobs. Leaving it behind can split your service record and make later tax, pension and claim administration more difficult. Transfer it through Form 13 when your records are ready, monitor the source and destination accounts, and treat any 36-month inoperative-account statement as context that must be checked against your actual EPFO status—not as an automatic rule for every old job account.
