Buying on the ex-dividend date or any time afterward generally means the seller receives it instead. The later payment date is when cash is distributed; it is not the deadline for qualifying.
If you are trading close to the cutoff, check the issuer’s actual ex-dividend, record and payable dates. Special dividends, stock dividends and transaction-specific settlement exceptions can follow different procedures.

The before, on and after rule
The ex-dividend date is the practical cutoff for a new stock purchase’s entitlement to the next ordinary cash dividend. Your result depends on when the purchase occurs relative to that date, not on whether the company has already announced the dividend or whether the payment date has arrived.

| When you buy | Who generally receives the next ordinary cash dividend? | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Before the ex-dividend date | The buyer | The purchase generally includes the next declared dividend. |
| On the ex-dividend date | The seller | The purchase generally does not include that dividend. |
| After the ex-dividend date | The seller | The buyer generally has missed that dividend and would look to a later declaration. |
Investor.gov summarizes the rule this way: “If you purchase a stock on its ex-dividend date or after, you will not receive the next dividend payment.” That statement addresses the ordinary U.S. stock-dividend situation; it does not eliminate special procedures for unusual distributions.

How the four dividend dates fit together
A company’s dividend announcement normally includes several dates. They answer different questions, so treating them as interchangeable can lead to a mistaken trade.
Declaration date
The declaration date is when the company announces the dividend, its amount or terms, and the relevant dates. An announcement tells you that a distribution has been declared, but it does not by itself make a purchase eligible. Eligibility still turns on the applicable ex-dividend date.
Record date
On the record date, the company checks its shareholder records to identify the holders entitled to the distribution. It is an accounting and recordkeeping date, not necessarily the last day on which a new buyer can qualify.

Payable date
The payable date is when the company distributes the dividend. It can occur after both the record date and ex-dividend date. Waiting until the payable date to buy does not create eligibility, because the entitlement was determined earlier.
Because calendars vary by issuer and business-day conventions matter, use the dates published for the particular dividend rather than calculating a cutoff from a payment date or assuming the record date is the trading deadline.
Why the T+1 settlement change does not change the cutoff
For covered U.S. securities transactions, the standard settlement cycle moved to T+1 on May 28, 2024, subject to exceptions. T+1 means that the official transfer of securities and cash generally completes one business day after the trade date.
Settlement timing is useful context when you are looking at a purchase close to a dividend date, but it does not turn an ex-date purchase into a dividend-eligible purchase. Investor guidance continues to frame eligibility around the issuer’s published ex-dividend date. If your order is unusual, delayed, corrected or subject to a market-specific exception, ask the broker how that transaction will be handled instead of relying on a calendar shortcut.

What happens if you sell after buying before the ex-date?
If you bought before the applicable ex-dividend date, selling after that date but before the payable date does not ordinarily cancel your entitlement to the cash dividend. The purchase qualified under the cutoff; the later sale does not normally reverse that qualification.
Conversely, if you bought on or after the ex-dividend date, you generally do not receive that dividend even if you continue holding the shares through the payable date. Holding on payment day is not a substitute for buying before the cutoff.
A practical timeline example
Suppose a company publishes an ex-dividend date of Thursday, a record date of Friday and a payable date the following week. The timeline works as follows:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Buy on Wednesday: You generally qualify for the declared dividend.
- Buy on Thursday: You generally do not qualify; the seller is entitled to it.
- Buy on Friday or later: You generally do not qualify for that dividend.
- Sell on Friday after buying Wednesday: You generally retain the dividend entitlement, even though you no longer hold the shares on the payable date.
- Buy on the payable date: You still do not acquire the already-determined dividend.
This example is illustrative. The issuer’s published dates control for an actual trade, and the distribution type may change the procedure.

Why the share price may change on the ex-dividend date
A significant cash dividend can affect the stock’s market price when the shares begin trading without the dividend. Investor.gov notes that the price may fall by approximately the dividend amount on the ex-dividend date. That is a possible market response, not a guaranteed exact adjustment.
Market prices also reflect supply and demand, broader market moves, company news and trading conditions. Therefore, the fact that a purchase before the ex-date generally includes a dividend does not make it a risk-free way to capture cash. The share price can move by more or less than the dividend, and it can rise instead of falling.

Dividends worth 25% or more of the stock’s value
For a dividend worth 25% or more of the stock’s value, Investor.gov describes a special rule: the ex-dividend date is deferred until one business day after the dividend is paid. The 25% threshold is the condition stated in that investor guidance. Because the rule changes the usual sequence, confirm the dates in the issuer’s announcement and with your broker before trading.

Stock dividends
A stock dividend can follow a different procedure from an ordinary cash dividend. Investor.gov says the ex-dividend date for a stock dividend is set after the stock dividend is paid. The distribution may therefore require a separate reading of the issuer’s notice rather than applying the cash-dividend rule mechanically.
Other unusual cases
The explanation here covers ordinary U.S. stock cash dividends. Preferred shares, exchange-traded products, foreign markets, reorganizations and other corporate actions can have their own entitlement and settlement rules. If the announcement describes a special, non-cash or otherwise unusual distribution, treat its specific terms as controlling.
How to check a dividend before placing a trade
- Find the issuer’s announcement: Confirm that the dividend has actually been declared and identify whether it is cash, stock or a special distribution.
- Write down all four dates: Record the declaration, ex-dividend, record and payable dates exactly as published.
- Identify the applicable cutoff: For an ordinary cash dividend, use the published ex-dividend date as the purchase deadline.
- Compare your planned trade date: A purchase before the ex-date generally qualifies; a purchase on or after it generally does not.
- Check for special language: Look for a dividend meeting the 25% threshold, a stock dividend or other terms that alter the normal procedure.
- Ask the broker about exceptions: If the trade is corrected, delayed, conditional or otherwise nonstandard, request transaction-specific guidance.
- Keep the dates with the order record: Saving the announcement helps you reconcile the expected dividend with the later account posting.
Common mistakes near the cutoff
- Using the payment date as the buying deadline: The payable date distributes cash; it does not determine whether a new purchase qualified.
- Assuming the record date is always the cutoff: The ex-dividend date is the practical trading reference, and it can be one business day earlier.
- Believing “on the date” means eligible: Buying on the ex-dividend date generally puts the shares in the ex-dividend category, so the seller receives the next dividend.
- Ignoring the distribution type: Stock dividends and very large special dividends can use different ex-date procedures.
- Treating a price adjustment as guaranteed: A possible dividend-related decline is not a promise that the stock will fall by exactly the dividend amount.
- Assuming T+1 settles every question: The settlement cycle describes when the trade completes; it does not replace the issuer’s published ex-date rule.
What information is needed for a specific stock?
To determine the likely result for one trade, you need the ticker or issuer, the distribution type, the declared ex-dividend date, the record date, the payable date and your planned trade date. The issuer’s announcement is the starting point. A broker can then address any order, settlement or market exception that is not apparent from the calendar.

Scope of this rule
This article describes U.S. investor-education guidance for ordinary stock cash dividends. It is not a universal rule for every country, exchange, security or corporate action. Actual dates differ among issuers, and the T+1 standard for covered U.S. transactions has exceptions.
For a real transaction, rely on the issuer’s current dividend announcement and ask your broker about any transaction-specific issue. The key distinction remains simple: before the applicable ex-dividend date generally qualifies the buyer; on or after it generally leaves the next dividend with the seller.
