If the FDIC closes your bank, your insured deposits are protected up to $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per ownership category. Usually, a healthy bank assumes the deposits and you become its customer. If no bank takes them, the FDIC pays insured balances directly, generally by check. Money above the insurance limit is not automatically erased, but it becomes a claim against the failed bank’s receivership and may be repaid only as assets are recovered.
What happens when the FDIC closes a bank?
A bank failure is a regulatory closure that usually occurs when an institution cannot meet its obligations. The FDIC may be appointed receiver. In that role, it takes control of the failed bank, gathers or sells its assets, determines valid claims and distributes available proceeds according to legal priorities.

The FDIC also administers deposit insurance. Those are related but separate functions: insurance protects eligible deposits within the coverage limit, while receivership administration deals with the bank’s assets, debts and any uninsured claims.

If that cannot be arranged, it conducts a direct deposit payoff. The two ways your insured deposits may be handled
| Reader concern | Another bank assumes deposits | FDIC makes a direct payoff |
|---|---|---|
| Where insured funds are held | At the assuming bank | Paid directly by the FDIC, generally by check |
| When you can access insured money | You become a depositor of the assuming bank under the transaction’s instructions | Payment begins after the FDIC determines the insured balance |
| What happens to rates and terms | The new bank may change rates, fees or other terms; it does not have to preserve the failed bank’s contract | The failed-bank account closes and interest stops accruing at failure |
| Pending payments | Checks and direct deposits may continue or be redirected, depending on the transaction | Checks or payment requests presented after closing may be returned unpaid |
Purchase-and-assumption transaction
In the common purchase-and-assumption resolution, a healthy institution acquires some or all of the failed bank’s deposits and other assets. Insured depositors generally become customers of the assuming bank without opening a new account themselves. Branches may reopen promptly, and the failure notice will explain where and when you can bank.
Do not assume that every product transfers unchanged. The assuming bank can set new interest rates, fees, maturity dates or account terms. The FDIC says insured depositors may withdraw insured funds without an early-withdrawal penalty when the new terms do not suit them, subject to the transaction’s instructions. Read the assuming bank’s notices before moving money or changing recurring payments.
Direct FDIC payoff
If no institution assumes the deposits, the FDIC calculates each customer’s insured amount and pays it directly, usually by check. The agency’s stated goal is to make insured-deposit payments within two business days of the failure, but that is a goal rather than a promise that every account will be settled on that timetable.

Some accounts require additional review. Trust-linked accounts, brokered deposits, fiduciary accounts and employee-benefit-plan deposits can involve ownership records or documentation that the FDIC must verify. A payment may therefore take longer than a straightforward individual checking or savings account.
Because the failed account is closed, checks or electronic payment requests that arrive afterward may be rejected. You remain responsible for paying creditors, landlords, lenders and service providers. Arrange another payment method as soon as the failure notice tells you how to access funds.

How much of your money is insured?
The standard FDIC limit is $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per ownership category. The limit is not $250,000 for every account number. Deposits in the same ownership category at the same insured bank are added together before coverage is calculated.
Coverage generally includes principal and interest accrued or due through the date of default. Eligible deposit accounts receive insurance automatically when they are held at an FDIC-insured institution; you do not buy a separate policy.

Depositor, bank and ownership category all matter
Three questions determine the basic calculation:
- Who is the depositor? The legal owner may be an individual, several co-owners, a trust, a business or another entity.
- Which bank holds the funds? Accounts at separate FDIC-insured banks generally receive separate limits. Different branches of the same bank do not create separate insurance coverage.
- Which ownership category applies? Eligible categories can receive separate coverage, but the account title, beneficiary information and records must satisfy FDIC requirements.
For example, two individual accounts at the same bank are generally combined for the single-owner category. A jointly owned account may be evaluated under the joint-ownership rules, while a qualifying revocable trust is evaluated under trust rules. The exact result depends on the legal ownership and the bank’s records; account labels alone are not enough.
Why account records matter
Beneficiary designations, trust documents, fiduciary records and plan documents can affect coverage. If names, ownership interests or beneficiary information are missing or inconsistent, the FDIC may ask for evidence before paying or recognizing the full amount. Keep statements, signature cards, trust instruments, beneficiary forms, brokerage records and employee-plan documentation available.
What happens to money over $250,000?
The uninsured portion is not covered by the FDIC’s insurance fund. It becomes a claim against the failed bank’s receivership. The FDIC, acting as receiver, sells or collects assets and uses the proceeds to pay claims in the order required by law.

An uninsured depositor may receive an initial receivership claim and later distributions as assets are liquidated. Payments can be periodic and pro rata. There is no universal recovery percentage, and the FDIC does not promise that the entire uninsured balance will be recovered. Asset sales and litigation can continue for several years.

Preserve statements and correspondence, respond to claim requests and follow the failed bank’s published instructions. Do not treat an uninsured balance as immediately available cash while the receivership is being administered.
Will you get your money right away?
For a simple insured account, access is intended to be prompt. Under an assumption transaction, the new bank generally provides access under its transition instructions. Under a direct payoff, the FDIC begins payments after identifying the insured amount, with a stated goal of two business days.
Timing can differ when the FDIC must verify ownership, calculate accrued interest, reconcile broker or fiduciary records, or resolve conflicting claims. A trust, estate, employee-benefit plan or business account may therefore require more documents and a longer review than an individually titled account.
Do not wait for a payment to clear if a bill is due. Contact the payee, use another account or payment method, and monitor the FDIC’s failure-specific notices for instructions about checks, wires, automatic debits and direct deposits.

What to do when your bank fails
- Read the official closing notice. It identifies whether another bank assumed deposits or whether the FDIC is making a payoff, and it gives the applicable branch, website and contact instructions.
- Confirm the institution’s status. Use FDIC BankFind and the FDIC’s bank-failures information to verify the failed institution and identify the receiver or assuming bank.
- List every account and legal owner. Record account numbers, balances, accrued interest, titling, co-owners, beneficiaries, trust names and business or plan ownership.
- Separate insured and potentially uninsured funds. Do not assume that multiple accounts or branches create separate limits at the same bank.
- Gather supporting records. Keep recent statements, deposit confirmations, trust and beneficiary documents, fiduciary authorizations, broker statements and employee-benefit-plan records.
- Protect your cash-flow obligations. Identify payroll deposits, benefit payments, mortgage and rent debits, utilities, card payments, checks and transfers that may be interrupted.
- Use the FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator. Enter ownership and beneficiary information as accurately as possible. Treat the result as an estimate, especially for trusts, fiduciary accounts and business structures.
- Submit claims or documents when instructed. Meet receiver deadlines and retain copies of everything you send.
- Ask the FDIC for account-specific help. Use its published consumer-assistance channels when the ownership category, payment amount or required documentation is unclear.
Common situations and how they differ
Several accounts in one person’s name
Balances in multiple single-owner accounts at the same insured bank are generally aggregated for the single-owner category. A checking account, savings account and certificate of deposit are not automatically three separate $250,000 limits.
Joint account
A qualifying joint account is evaluated under the joint-ownership category rather than simply being added to each owner’s individual accounts. The FDIC examines the number of owners, each owner’s interest and the account records. Make sure the bank’s records identify all owners correctly.
Revocable trust or payable-on-death account
Trust and beneficiary coverage depends on the trust arrangement, eligible beneficiaries and required records. A missing, outdated or ambiguous beneficiary designation can change the calculation. The FDIC may request the trust instrument or other evidence before determining insurance.
Brokered, fiduciary or employee-benefit-plan deposit
These deposits may be held through an intermediary or plan administrator. The FDIC can need records from the broker, fiduciary or plan before it can identify each beneficial owner and calculate coverage. Keep both your own statements and the intermediary’s documentation.
Business account
The legal entity, rather than the individual who signs the checks, is generally the depositor. Accounts belonging to separate eligible entities may be treated differently, but businesses that are not legally distinct are not automatically assigned separate coverage.

What can go wrong during the transition?
- Assuming the new bank preserves your rate. It may not. Review the replacement account and maturity terms.
- Counting branches as separate banks. Branches of one insured institution share the same insurance limit.
- Ignoring accrued interest. The insured calculation generally includes interest accrued or due through the failure date.
- Spending an uninsured balance before it is resolved. Excess funds are receivership claims, not guaranteed cash.
- Letting automatic payments continue without checking them. A direct payoff can return pending checks or payment requests unpaid.
- Relying on an informal account description. Legal ownership, beneficiary records and documentation control the insurance analysis.
- Missing a receiver request. Delayed or incomplete documents can delay a determination, particularly for trusts, fiduciary accounts and plans.
How to verify your coverage and get help
BankFind can confirm whether an institution is FDIC-insured and provide bank-failure information. The FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator can model coverage using account ownership and beneficiary details, but it cannot replace a review of complicated records.
When contacting the FDIC, have your identification, account statements, account titles, tax or entity records, trust instruments, beneficiary forms and correspondence from the assuming bank or receiver ready. Ask which ownership category the FDIC is using, what documents are missing, whether a payment is insurance or a receivership distribution, and how to handle a returned check or interrupted direct deposit.
The FDIC states: No depositor has ever lost a penny of insured deposits since the FDIC was created in 1933.
That statement applies to insured deposits, not to balances above the applicable limit or to every claim in a receivership.
The practical bottom line for account holders
A bank closure does not normally wipe out insured deposits. Most customers either move to an assuming bank or receive an FDIC payment. The important work is identifying how your accounts are legally owned, aggregating balances correctly at each bank, preserving documentation and following the failed bank’s instructions for payments and claims. Funds above the limit remain claims against the receivership, with recovery and timing dependent on asset proceeds rather than a guaranteed schedule.
