Usually, your account and loan continue. In an ordinary merger or acquisition, the new bank takes over deposit accounts and servicing, while your loan remains a binding contract. Keep making payments under the existing agreement, but follow the successor bank’s official notice if it changes the payment address, online portal, routing details, fees, rates, or other account administration. A failed-bank resolution follows different rules, so first determine whether your bank was sold voluntarily or closed by regulators.
First determine whether this was a sale, merger, or bank failure
“Bank sold” can describe two very different events. In an ordinary merger or acquisition, one institution assumes another’s customers under a planned conversion. In a failure, regulators close the bank and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), acting as receiver, arranges a resolution or pays insured depositors directly. The notices, payment routing, and access to funds can differ substantially.

| Issue | Ordinary merger or acquisition | FDIC bank-failure resolution |
|---|---|---|
| Who handles the transition? | The acquiring bank and the former bank’s conversion team. | The FDIC as receiver, often with an assuming bank. |
| Deposit access | Accounts normally convert on a scheduled date; the notice explains any interruption. | With a purchase-and-assumption transaction, insured depositors immediately become customers of the assuming bank. If no bank assumes the deposits, the FDIC pays insured balances directly, generally by check. |
| Account details | Routing numbers, account numbers, online-banking credentials, branches, fees, or rates may change according to the conversion plan. | Checks, deposit slips, direct deposits, and payment instructions follow the resolution plan. A direct payoff can cause checks presented after closure to be returned unpaid. |
| Loan servicing | The buyer may service the loan or transfer servicing to another company, with instructions in a notice. | Your borrowing obligation continues. The FDIC or another owner sends instructions if the loan or its servicing is transferred. |
Do not infer the exact result from headlines or rumors. Use the official letter, secure-message notice, or regulator announcement for the conversion date and transaction-specific instructions.

What happens to checking and savings accounts?
Your balance and account usually transfer
In a normal acquisition, the assuming bank takes over the former bank’s deposit accounts. Your balance, transaction history, and account type generally move to the new institution, although the account may receive a new number or be mapped to a different product. The conversion notice should identify the effective date, new routing number, replacement checks or debit cards, branch changes, and the process for enrolling in online banking.

Read the notice for changes in rates, fees, and terms
Deposit-account terms are not frozen forever by a sale. The account contract may permit the successor bank to change an interest rate, fee, or other term after giving any advance notice required by the agreement or applicable law. Compare the notice with your current account disclosure so you know whether a new monthly fee, minimum balance, overdraft rule, or rate applies and when it starts.
Verify direct deposits and recurring debits
Payroll, government benefits, transfers, subscriptions, utilities, and other recurring entries may continue, but the routing or account information used by the sender can require updating. FDIC guidance tells customers to check whether automatic-payment information must be revised after a merger. After the conversion date, inspect the account for at least one complete billing cycle and confirm that expected credits arrived and scheduled debits posted correctly.
Understand the temporary FDIC insurance treatment
FDIC insurance generally covers up to at least $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category, at each FDIC-insured bank. When deposits move from an assumed bank to an acquiring bank, the transferred deposits are separately insured from deposits you already held at the acquiring institution for at least six months. That transition period gives you time to review ownership categories and move excess funds if necessary. The protection applies to the qualifying deposits, not automatically to every balance you may hold under a different ownership arrangement.

Coverage and maturity
An assumed-bank CD remains separately insured until the earliest maturity date occurring after the six-month transition period. The maturity date therefore matters even if the CD’s term began before the acquisition. Mark the date on your calendar and read the successor bank’s renewal notice before allowing the certificate to roll over.

Renewals during the transition window
A CD that matures during the six-month period can retain separate coverage when it is renewed for the same term and dollar amount, subject to the conditions described by the FDIC. A different term or amount may not receive the same treatment, so ask the bank how a proposed renewal affects coverage before authorizing it.
Rates and withdrawal choices
In a failed-bank acquisition, the acquiring bank may change the interest rate on acquired deposits. An insured depositor who does not want the new rate may withdraw insured funds without an early-withdrawal penalty under the FDIC’s stated failure-resolution rules. Confirm whether the institution is treating your certificate under those rules and obtain the effective rate and maturity information in writing.
What happens to a mortgage, car loan, credit card, or other loan?
The debt does not disappear
A sale or failure does not cancel your obligation. The FDIC’s borrower guidance states: “A bank failure does not change your obligation as a borrower to make payments and comply with the terms of your loan.” Continue making the scheduled payment, even if a statement is delayed, unless an official notice gives a specific alternative arrangement.

The bank that owns the loan may sell it, and a separate company may take over servicing and collect payments. The owner or servicer must send notice with the new payment address or electronic-payment instructions. For a mortgage, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says a servicer “cannot change the terms of your agreement,” but you must follow the new payment instructions so you do not miss a payment or send money to the wrong address.

Contract terms normally remain the same
The FDIC summarizes a loan transfer this way: “The sale does not affect the terms of your loan.” A new owner or servicer cannot raise a fixed mortgage rate, change the principal balance, alter the maturity date, or rewrite other contractual terms merely because ownership or servicing changed. Your signed agreement controls. Keep it available when checking the first statement from the successor.
When can a rate or fee change?
A transfer itself is not authority to rewrite a loan. A variable-rate loan, adjustable-rate mortgage, credit card, or other product can change only under the terms already disclosed in its contract and applicable notice requirements. The distinction is important: deposit and credit-card rates or other account terms may change when the contract permits and required advance notice is provided; a servicing transfer alone cannot create a new loan term.
Mortgage escrow and insurance contacts
For a mortgage, verify where to send principal, interest, taxes, insurance, and any escrow shortage payment. Confirm the new servicer’s customer-service number, online portal, and address for insurance declarations or tax documents. Keep prior statements so you can reconcile the principal balance, escrow balance, and payment history against the first statement after transfer.

- Classify the event. Decide whether the notice describes an ordinary merger or an FDIC failure resolution. The document should identify the effective date and the institution responsible for questions.
- Extract the new details. Record any replacement routing number, account number, debit card, check stock, online-banking login process, payment address, loan-servicer name, fee schedule, and rate. Do not rely on an unsolicited phone call or email to supply these details.
- Protect loan autopay. Before changing an automatic loan payment, verify the new servicer through a statement or official notice. Confirm the account and routing numbers, draft date, amount, and whether a one-time authorization is required. Leave enough funds in the old account until you know the final scheduled debit has cleared.
- Check incoming deposits. Review the first payroll, benefit, pension, or other expected deposit after conversion. If it is missing, contact both the sender and the bank using verified contact information and keep proof of the expected payment.
- Audit recurring withdrawals. Compare the first post-conversion statement with your list of rent, utilities, subscriptions, insurance, and card payments. Update a biller only through its established account or a phone number printed on a statement.
- Save evidence. Retain the sale or failure notice, old and new statements, payment confirmations, checks, and correspondence. These records help resolve a disputed late fee, returned item, or incorrect loan balance.
What is different when the bank fails?
Purchase-and-assumption resolution
In a purchase-and-assumption transaction, another bank assumes some or all of the failed bank’s deposits and other assets. The FDIC says insured depositors “immediately become depositors of the assuming bank and have access to their insured funds.” Direct deposits, including Social Security payments, are generally redirected to the acquiring bank, but you should still verify that each expected payment arrives.

Checks and deposit slips from the failed bank are typically accepted for a limited period, and the acquiring bank supplies replacement materials. Use the new checks and deposit slips as soon as they arrive, because the temporary acceptance period is not indefinite.
Direct FDIC payoff
If no institution assumes the deposits, the FDIC pays insured balances directly, generally by check up to the applicable insurance limit. Checks or electronic payment requests presented after the bank closes can be returned unpaid. You must make other funds available to the creditor; the returned item itself does not automatically indicate a negative credit event. Contact the biller promptly, explain the closure, and document the replacement payment.

Common problems and the appropriate response
“My automatic payment failed.”
Check whether the loan or biller supplied a new routing or account number. Use the official notice to correct the instruction, then request written confirmation that the payment will not be treated as late. Keep the original payment confirmation and any bank error number.
“My direct deposit did not arrive.”
Confirm the expected posting date with the employer or benefit agency, then ask the successor bank whether the deposit was redirected or rejected. If the bank failed and the FDIC issued a payoff, the payment may need to be redirected to a different account.

“The new bank changed my loan rate.”
Compare the new statement with the promissory note, card agreement, or mortgage disclosure. A variable-rate adjustment allowed by that contract is different from a rate increase based solely on a servicing transfer. Ask the servicer to identify the contractual provision and notice supporting the change.
“My account is over the insurance limit after the merger.”
List every deposit by bank and ownership category, then apply the temporary separate-insurance rule for transferred deposits. If funds may exceed the applicable limit after the transition period, ask the bank or FDIC how to restructure ownership or move money before that protection ends.
“A check was returned after the closure.”
Determine whether the FDIC assumed deposits or paid them directly. Under a direct payoff, a post-closure check can be returned even when money was insured. Pay the creditor from another source, provide the closure notice, and retain proof so the returned item is not mistaken for ordinary nonpayment.
A practical timeline
On the day you receive the notice
- Identify the transaction type and effective date.
- Download or print the notice and your latest statements.
- List every deposit, loan, automatic debit, direct deposit, and CD maturity connected to the bank.
Before conversion
- Enroll in the successor’s verified online-banking system.
- Obtain replacement checks or cards and record new payment addresses.
- Confirm loan autopay and biller instructions without closing the old account prematurely.
After conversion
- Check balances, direct deposits, recurring debits, loan postings, and fees.
- Reconcile the first loan statement with your contract and prior statement.
- Review CD renewal and FDIC-insurance implications before the applicable maturity or transition deadline.
The essential distinction
A bank’s change in ownership normally changes who operates your account, not the fact that your deposits and debts exist. Deposits move under the conversion or resolution plan, with special FDIC treatment for transferred funds. Loans remain enforceable on their original contractual terms while ownership or servicing may change. The safest response is disciplined verification: identify the type of transaction, follow the official notice, keep paying on schedule, test every deposit and automatic debit, and preserve records until the transition is fully reconciled.
