Depending on the exchange, order type, time-in-force instruction and broker policy, the leftover quantity may be cancelled immediately, entered into a short post-close session, carried to another auction that day, remain on the order book, or expire later.
To know what happened to your order, identify four things in your confirmation: the listing venue, the order instruction (such as MOC, LOC, GTC or GFS), the time-in-force setting and any post-close participation flag. The exchange rule determines what is eligible; your broker’s routing and account policy determine how that rule is applied to your order.

The possible outcomes after a closing auction
When a closing auction establishes the official closing price, the matching engine allocates available shares according to that venue’s priority rules. Any quantity that could not be matched is called the residual or unexecuted remainder. That remainder can follow one of several paths:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Immediate cancellation: The balance is removed as soon as the auction ends.
- Post-close matching: An eligible remainder enters a defined session after the auction, often at the official closing price or subject to the original limit.
- Carry-forward: The order remains eligible for another auction later the same day or for a later trading session.
- Resting on the book: A persistent order remains available for continuous trading at its limit price.
- Expiration: The order stays live until the stated expiration condition, such as the end of the day or a broker-defined date.
These are different outcomes. A broker statement that says “unfilled” does not by itself tell you whether the order was cancelled, carried forward or left active.

Why the exchange and order instruction come first
Closing auctions are exchange-specific procedures, not a single global event. NYSE, Nasdaq, the London Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Nordic each publish different mechanisms for residual orders. Even within one venue, a market-on-close order can have a different fate from a limit-on-close, good-for-session or good-till-cancelled order.
The same security can also be routed to a different venue than the exchange most readers associate with its ticker. A broker may send an order to an exchange, an alternative trading venue or an internal routing destination. The venue that actually accepted the order controls its auction eligibility and cancellation deadlines. Check the execution report or order-detail screen for the destination rather than relying only on the stock symbol.
Market-on-close (MOC)
An MOC order seeks execution at the official closing auction price and normally has no price limit. If the auction cannot fill the entire quantity, the unfilled portion is handled under that venue’s MOC rule. Some venues cancel it at the auction’s conclusion; others may expose a residual to a defined post-close process. An MOC instruction does not automatically become a next-day order.

Limit-on-close (LOC)
An LOC order participates only if the auction price satisfies its limit. A buy LOC generally requires a closing price at or below its limit; a sell LOC generally requires a closing price at or above its limit. A residual can therefore exist either because there was not enough contra-side volume or because the limit condition prevented a match. Certain venues allow an eligible LOC remainder into a post-close session, while others cancel it.
Good-for-session (GFS) or day orders
A GFS or day order is normally valid only for the specified trading session. On venues with multiple auctions in one day, “session” can include more than one auction. The exact definition is venue-specific: an order may carry to a remaining auction that day, then cancel when the final session ends.

Good-till-cancelled (GTC)
A GTC order is intended to persist beyond one trading day, subject to the broker’s maximum duration and any corporate-action or risk controls. Persistence does not guarantee participation in a closing auction. The order may remain on the continuous book after the close, be re-entered for the next session, or be cancelled if the broker does not support the venue’s auction instruction. Review the broker’s stated GTC policy and the order’s expiration date.
Immediate-or-cancel (IOC) and other restricted instructions
An IOC order must execute immediately, in whole or in part, when it reaches the market. Any unexecuted balance is cancelled; it is not a normal closing-auction carry-forward instruction. Other flags, such as “closing auction only,” “auction participation” or broker-specific post-close settings, can override ordinary day-order behavior.

How major venues handle a leftover balance
| Venue | Post-auction mechanism | What can happen to an eligible remainder | Important condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| NYSE | Closing auction under Rule 7.35 | Handling depends on the order type, security and routing rule; a balance may be cancelled rather than carried forward. | The closing auction is conducted at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. MOC/LOC entry and cancellation restrictions begin before the auction. |
| Nasdaq | Closing Cross followed, for qualifying LOC orders, by an Extended Trading Close | An eligible LOC residual may enter the Extended Trading Close; any amount still unexecuted when that session ends is cancelled. | The Nasdaq Official Closing Price must be at or within the LOC limit, and the participant can disable Extended Trading Close participation. |
| London Stock Exchange SETSqx | Multiple daily auctions plus a post-close session | GFS orders can carry to remaining auctions that day. Some residual orders become active post-close; others remain inactive. | Whether an order activates depends on its price relative to the auction price and on its order type. |
| Nasdaq Nordic | Optional Trading@ClosingPrice state | Participants can match additional volume at the established closing auction price during a 10-minute period. | The session does not change the equilibrium closing price and is optional for participants. |
The table shows why a statement such as “all closing-auction leftovers are cancelled” or “all leftovers carry over” is unsafe. The correct answer requires the venue and the instruction attached to the order.
NYSE: timing restrictions matter before the auction
The NYSE closing auction is a Rule 7.35 process and is held at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time for the regular session. Its imbalance information includes Market-at-the-Close and Limit-at-the-Close interest. The practical issue for an unexecuted order is that the ability to change or cancel it narrows before the auction occurs.
- NYSE materials describe a 3:50 p.m. Eastern restriction affecting MOC and LOC activity.
- Many cancellation or modification requests are rejected from about 3:58 p.m. onward.
- Once the auction has printed, the residual treatment depends on the exact instruction and the security’s routing rules.
Do not assume that a NYSE-listed symbol means every order is governed by one identical carry-forward policy. Published NYSE rules include venue-specific treatment for certain securities routed through Nasdaq systems. Your confirmation should show whether the order was accepted for the NYSE closing auction and whether any remainder was cancelled at the close.

Nasdaq: the Extended Trading Close path for eligible LOC orders
Nasdaq provides the clearest example of a formal post-cross path. After the Closing Cross establishes the Nasdaq Official Closing Price, an eligible limit-on-close order can participate in the Extended Trading Close (ETC) if that closing price is at or within the order’s limit.
What happens step by step
- The Closing Cross executes the order at the Nasdaq Official Closing Price, subject to the LOC limit.
- If part of the LOC quantity remains and the order qualifies for ETC, the residual is exposed to that post-cross process.
- The participant may disable ETC participation where the order-entry setting permits it.
- When the Extended Trading Close ends, any still-unexecuted portion is cancelled. It does not remain live indefinitely as a Nasdaq closing order.
This is a conditional path, not a promise that every LOC order receives extra time. A limit that is too restrictive, an ineligible order setting or a participant opt-out can keep the balance out of ETC.
London Stock Exchange SETSqx: carry-forward and inactive residuals
SEترSqx uses scheduled auctions and a post-close period, so an unfilled order can have more than one possible destination during the same day. The exchange’s description says that good-for-session orders can carry forward to remaining auctions that day and remain visible during call periods.
Residuals at the auction price
In the trading-system guide, some orders priced at the auction price become active in the post-close session. This allows a remaining quantity to participate after the auction without changing the conditions that made it eligible.
Residuals priced worse than the auction
Orders priced less favorably than the auction price can remain inactive rather than becoming immediately tradable post-close. “Inactive” means the order is retained in the system but is not available for matching in that phase. It may become relevant in a later session if it has not expired.

Triggered stops
A stop order triggered in the process can remain parked for a later session if it is still unexpired. That is different from a filled order and different from an order cancelled at the end of the day. The order’s stop instructions and expiration date continue to matter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Nasdaq Nordic: a 10-minute closing-price session
Nasdaq Nordic offers an optional Trading@ClosingPrice state after the lit order-book closing auction. It lasts 10 minutes and lets participants match additional volume only at the established closing auction price. Because the price is fixed, this session can add executions without changing the equilibrium price already determined by the auction.
The feature is optional, so an order will not necessarily be included merely because it was present in the closing auction. Eligibility, participant configuration and the original order instruction determine whether a residual can be matched during those 10 minutes.
Can you still trade at the closing price after the auction?
Sometimes. A venue must provide a post-close mechanism, and your order must qualify for it. Nasdaq Nordic’s Trading@ClosingPrice is explicitly a 10-minute closing-price session. Nasdaq’s Extended Trading Close can accept certain LOC residuals when the official closing price is within the limit. Other venues may cancel the balance or leave it inactive.

How to determine what happened to your order
- Open the execution report. Look for the venue, execution time, average price, filled quantity and remaining quantity.
- Read the time-in-force field. Distinguish MOC, LOC, GFS, day, GTC, IOC or a broker-specific auction flag.
- Check the order status after the auction. “Cancelled,” “expired,” “resting,” “queued,” “inactive” and “partially filled” describe different states.
- Check the expiration date or session. A GTC order can remain live, while a day or GFS order normally ends with the applicable session.
- Review post-close participation settings. Some Nasdaq ETC participation is configurable, and other venues use separate opt-in flags.
- Ask the broker for the venue rule if the status is unclear. Request the exact reason code and whether the balance was sent to a post-close session, re-entered for a later auction or cancelled.
Why SEC Rule 605 reports do not answer the persistence question
SEC Rule 605 governs market-center execution-quality reporting. It says that unexecuted and uncancelled orders are reported as received, and that a GTC order left unexecuted in whole or in part at the end of regular trading hours is treated as received on each day it persists. That reporting treatment is separate from the broker’s decision to keep, cancel or re-enter the order.
Therefore, seeing an order represented in a Rule 605 report does not prove that your personal order remained live after the close. Conversely, a broker’s cancellation does not mean the order was never included in the market center’s reporting population. Use the broker’s order history and venue-specific status codes to establish what happened to your balance.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “limit” means “good till cancelled.” A limit price describes price protection; time-in-force determines lifetime.
- Confusing a partial fill with a live remainder. A partially filled order may have been cancelled immediately after the auction.
- Ignoring the routed venue. The listing exchange and the execution venue are not always identical.
- Expecting the official close after hours. A later order can trade at another price unless a closing-price session specifically governs it.
- Waiting until the auction to cancel. NYSE restrictions begin before 4:00 p.m. Eastern, and late requests can be rejected.
A practical decision framework
When comparing two broker instructions or venues, evaluate five axes:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Persistence: Is the remainder cancelled, carried forward, left resting or allowed to expire?
- Price: Must it trade only at the auction price, within a limit, or at normal continuous-book prices?
- Timing: Is there an immediate cancellation, a defined post-close window or eligibility for the next auction?
- Eligibility: Which order types and time-in-force flags qualify?
- Control: Can you opt out, cancel or modify the residual, and until what deadline?
Apply those questions to the exact order ticket rather than to the stock generally. That is the reliable way to predict whether an unfilled closing-auction quantity disappears, remains available or waits for another matching opportunity.
