TLT usually falls when long-term U.S. Treasury yields rise and rises when those yields fall. The fund’s long duration makes its share price particularly sensitive to yield changes. TLT pays distributions monthly, but the amount can vary as portfolio income changes; a monthly cash payment is not a guaranteed dividend and does not automatically offset a decline in the share price. To judge the result, evaluate the distribution and price change together as total return.
What TLT owns and which interest rates matter
Exposure to very long-term Treasury bonds
TLT is the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF. Its objective is to track the ICE US Treasury 20+ Year Bond Index, which includes U.S. Treasury bonds with more than 20 years remaining to maturity. The fund trades on NASDAQ. The portfolio’s long maturities, rather than the Federal Reserve’s overnight target rate by itself, are the key reason TLT can move sharply when market expectations for long-term borrowing costs change. The issuer describes the fund and its benchmark on its TLT product page.

“Interest rates” is not one single rate
When investors ask whether TLT will rise or fall after a rate decision, the relevant comparison is usually the market yield on long-dated Treasury securities. A Federal Reserve increase or cut can influence expectations for inflation, economic growth and future policy, but it does not mechanically determine the direction or size of 20-year and 30-year Treasury yields. Long-term yields can rise after a policy cut if investors expect more inflation, or fall after a hike if they expect slower growth. TLT responds to the yields at which its bonds can be bought and sold in the market.

Fixed coupons are repriced in the market
Existing Treasury bonds make fixed coupon payments. If newly issued bonds begin offering higher yields, an older bond with a lower coupon must trade at a lower price to provide a competitive return to a new buyer. If market yields fall, the older bond’s relatively higher coupon becomes more valuable and its price generally rises. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission summarizes this principle as: “A fundamental principle of bond investing is that market interest rates and bond prices generally move in opposite directions.” See the SEC’s Investor Bulletin on fixed-income investments.

Duration explains why the move can be large
As of September 24, 2026, iShares reported TLT’s effective duration at 14.88 years. Duration is a sensitivity measure: a longer duration normally means a larger percentage price response to a given change in yields than a shorter-duration portfolio. It is not a promise that TLT will move exactly 14.88% for a one-percentage-point rate change. The actual result depends on which maturities move, whether the yield curve twists, convexity, portfolio turnover, accrued interest and the ETF’s market price relative to its net asset value.
A common educational approximation is:
approximate price change = –effective duration × change in yield
Using 14.88 years only as an illustration, a parallel 0.50-percentage-point rise in relevant yields would correspond to roughly a 7.44% decline before convexity and other effects; a 1.00-point rise would correspond to roughly 14.88%. These are sensitivity illustrations, not forecasts or guaranteed trading results. The same approximation gives positive price changes when yields fall.
Net asset value and the exchange price
Each day, the bonds in TLT’s portfolio are valued at current market prices to calculate net asset value (NAV). The ETF’s shares also trade throughout the day, so the exchange price can be slightly above or below NAV. Authorized participants generally create and redeem ETF shares, a process that tends to keep large differences from persisting, but intraday liquidity and market stress can still affect the price investors receive. A falling NAV caused by higher Treasury yields can therefore appear as a falling TLT share price, even though the fund continues to receive scheduled coupon payments.
What usually happens when long-term yields rise
Immediate effect: price pressure
When the market reprices long-term Treasuries to higher yields, the market value of TLT’s existing bonds generally declines. Because the fund has a 14.88-year effective duration, the percentage effect can be material compared with a short-maturity bond fund. The move can happen as soon as investors change their yield expectations; it does not wait for a bond in the portfolio to mature.

Later effect: reinvestment income can improve
The coupons on bonds already held do not reset upward just because market yields rose. As securities mature or are sold and the proceeds are reinvested, however, the fund can buy newer bonds offering higher yields. That process can eventually raise portfolio income, but the sources do not establish a fixed timetable or a one-for-one relationship between a Federal Reserve move and TLT’s next payment. The initial price decline and the later income adjustment are separate mechanisms.
What usually happens when long-term yields fall
Existing bonds become more valuable
Lower long-term yields generally increase the market value of TLT’s existing higher-coupon bonds, lifting NAV and usually the share price. Long-duration funds can benefit substantially from a sustained decline in yields, although the size of the move depends on the part of the curve that falls and on other market conditions.

Future portfolio income may reset lower
When bonds mature, falling yields mean the proceeds may be reinvested in securities with lower coupons. The fund’s existing coupons remain fixed until the bonds mature or leave the portfolio, so a price gain can appear before any reduction in the cash distribution. Over time, lower reinvestment yields can reduce the income available for distributions.
How TLT distributions work
Monthly frequency does not mean a fixed monthly amount
iShares lists TLT’s distribution frequency as monthly. Each payment reflects income available after the portfolio receives interest, incurs expenses and accounts for the fund’s distribution process. Payments can differ from month to month; “monthly” describes timing, not a promised dollar amount or yield.
Three figures that are often confused
| Measure | What it represents | Dated TLT figure |
|---|---|---|
| 30-day SEC yield | A standardized recent income measure calculated under the SEC’s methodology; it is not a guaranteed future payment. | 5.59% as of October 5, 2026 |
| 12-month trailing yield | Distributions paid over the prior 12 months divided by the relevant share-price measure; it looks backward. | 5.05% as of October 5, 2026 |
| Distribution amount | The cash declared for a particular payment period; it can change as portfolio income and fund conditions change. | Varies by declaration |
Both yields were reported by iShares on October 5, 2026, but they use different windows and methods, so they should not be treated as interchangeable. A yield percentage also changes when the share price changes, even if the dollar distribution has not.

Why the share price can drop on a distribution date
When a fund pays cash, that cash leaves fund assets. The SEC explains in its Fund Distributions Investor Bulletin that a fund’s share price typically declines by approximately the distribution amount when the payment is made, all else equal. Receiving cash is therefore not automatically an extra return on top of an unchanged share value. Investors should combine distributions, price changes and expenses when evaluating performance.

Why a Federal Reserve announcement may not produce the expected TLT move
TLT is driven by expectations for long-term Treasury cash flows and discount rates. A policy-rate announcement can affect those expectations, but investors also process inflation data, employment reports, government borrowing needs, global demand for Treasuries and changes in the expected path of future policy. If a rate decision was already anticipated, much of its effect may be reflected in prices before the announcement. If the statement changes the expected path of inflation or growth, long-term yields can move in the opposite direction from the policy rate itself.
The shape of the yield curve matters as well. A rise concentrated in 20-year and 30-year yields can hurt TLT more than a similar move confined to two-year yields. Conversely, a decline at the long end can lift TLT even while short-term rates remain elevated. Looking only at the federal-funds target can therefore give an incomplete explanation of a TLT move.
How to evaluate the result as total return
Total return combines the change in the investment’s market value with cash distributions, then accounts for expenses and any reinvestment effects. A simple holding-period calculation is:

total return = (ending price − starting price + distributions received) ÷ starting price
This calculation should use matching dates and should state whether distributions were taken as cash or reinvested. A TLT position can pay a positive distribution while producing a negative total return if the share-price decline is larger. It can also produce a positive total return during a period of falling yields even if the distribution amount later declines, because the price appreciation may dominate.
Do not compare TLT’s 30-day SEC yield with a bank account rate or another bond fund’s trailing yield without checking methodology, date, duration and tax treatment. Yield is an income measure; total return is the combined outcome of income and price movement over a specified period.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a higher policy rate automatically means a higher TLT distribution
Market yields can rise immediately while the coupons on existing holdings remain unchanged. Income may increase only as the portfolio reinvests at higher yields, and no fixed timing is established. Do not infer the next monthly payment directly from a single policy announcement.

Treating a quoted yield as a promise
The 30-day SEC yield and trailing yield are measurements calculated on specified dates. They are not contractual guarantees of future monthly cash flow. Read the date and methodology beside every quoted yield.
Ignoring the distribution-date price adjustment
A cash payment reduces fund assets. Compare total return, not the distribution in isolation, when judging whether an investment gained value.
Using duration as an exact trading signal
Duration is an estimate of sensitivity under particular assumptions. Curve changes, convexity, turnover, liquidity and the ETF’s market pricing can make the observed move differ from a simple duration calculation.

TLT’s long maturity and 14.88-year effective duration expose shareholders to meaningful price volatility. Monthly distributions do not remove that risk or stabilize the share price.
A practical checklist before interpreting a TLT move
- Identify which Treasury yields moved—short, intermediate or long term.
- Check whether the move was already expected before the economic release or Federal Reserve announcement.
- Review TLT’s current effective duration and maturity statistics, noting their as-of dates.
- Separate the immediate market-price effect from the slower effect of reinvesting maturities at new yields.
- Record the distribution’s declaration and payment dates and whether you received cash or reinvested it.
- Evaluate the holding-period total return after distributions and expenses instead of relying on a headline yield.
For primary explanations, the SEC’s material on corporate bonds and fixed-income products discusses how fixed coupons, market yields and bond prices interact. TLT’s current portfolio statistics and distribution disclosures are maintained on the issuer’s product page.
