If a U.S. college loses institution-wide accreditation, it usually loses eligibility for federal student-aid programs, but it does not necessarily close immediately. Students may be offered a teach-out, transfer to another institution, or—if the school closes—other completion or discharge processes. Credits are not guaranteed to transfer, and student loans are not automatically forgiven. The practical result depends on whether the action affects the whole institution or only a program, the effective date, the school’s response, the student’s state and profession, and whether the college remains open.
First confirm exactly what happened: an institution-wide accreditation withdrawal, a program-specific action, loss of the accreditor’s federal recognition, a suspension, or a closure. Those events have different consequences.

What “losing accreditation” can mean
Accreditation is not one single status. A primary, institution-wide accreditor evaluates the college as a whole and is central to federal Title IV eligibility. A programmatic accreditor evaluates a particular course of study, such as nursing, education, engineering or another regulated field. A program can lose its specialized accreditation while the college retains institution-wide accreditation and other programs remain eligible.

Institution-wide action versus programmatic action
| Action | What it normally affects | What students should verify |
|---|---|---|
| Institution-wide accreditation withdrawn, revoked or terminated | The college’s federal-aid eligibility is generally at risk, and the institution may need a teach-out, a new recognized accreditor or an orderly closure. | The accreditor’s final decision, effective date, appeal status, federal-aid instructions and the school’s teach-out plan. |
| Programmatic accreditation lost | The named program may no longer meet an employer, certification or state-licensing requirement. The college’s other programs and overall Title IV eligibility may be unaffected. | Whether the program is required to hold that accreditation for the intended license, and what the state board and receiving programs will accept. |
| The accreditor loses U.S. Department of Education recognition | The school and the accreditor are in a different regulatory situation. The school may have up to 18 months to obtain accreditation from another recognized agency under applicable rules. | Which agency action occurred, the Department’s effective date and the deadline or conditions that apply to the college. |
| School closure | Students cannot continue classes at that institution and may need a teach-out, transfer or a federal closed-school discharge review. | Closure date, transcript custody, state oversight, teach-out availability and loan-servicer instructions. |
Accreditation loss and immediate closure are therefore different events. A college may operate during a limited transition, seek another recognized accreditor, arrange a teach-out or close. Do not rely on a headline or a verbal assurance; request the accreditor’s notice and the school’s written student instructions.

How federal student aid can change
When an institution loses its primary institution-wide accreditation, it is generally no longer eligible to participate in federal Title IV programs. That can affect Pell Grants, federal loans and other aid tied to institutional eligibility. The change is controlled by the action’s legal effective date, not necessarily the date a college first announces the problem.
Required reporting and possible transition periods
When primary accreditation is lost, the school generally must notify the Department of Education within 10 days. The school’s notice should explain whether federal disbursements stop, whether students can finish a term and what alternatives are available.
The 2026–2027 Federal Student Aid Handbook describes a conditional possibility for the Department to let a school continue to originate, award or disburse Title IV funds for no more than 120 days after a final, non-appealable decision. This is not an automatic grace period. Conditions can include an approved teach-out, an orderly-closure plan and required assurances. Students should ask whether the Department granted this permission to their college, the exact start and end dates, and which types of disbursement are covered.

The handbook also describes a general two-year bar on recertification after institution-wide accreditation is withdrawn, revoked or otherwise terminated for cause. Exceptions are specified, including certain situations involving a school’s religious mission or affiliation and a case in which the accreditor itself loses Department recognition. It is inaccurate to say that every college must close for two years.
Do federal grants and loans follow a student automatically?
No. Aid does not simply “transfer” with a student to a new college. The receiving institution must itself be eligible, the student must meet that school’s eligibility rules and remaining enrollment must fit the applicable program requirements. A new school may package aid differently, and a student could need to submit new forms or resolve enrollment-status issues. Obtain written confirmation from the new financial-aid office before assuming a payment will be made.
Teach-out plans: a route to finish without starting over
A college that loses federal-aid eligibility should prepare a teach-out plan and make it available to students. The plan should identify nearby institutions with similar programs and explain their transfer-credit policies. A teach-out agreement is stronger than a general suggestion because it can specify that a receiving institution will accept particular courses or cohorts.

Questions to ask about a teach-out
- Which institution will award the final credential, and will it be the same degree title you started?
- Which completed courses, grades and clinical or practicum hours will count?
- How many credits and terms remain, including any prerequisite courses?
- What is the earliest realistic completion date?
- What tuition, technology charges, application fees or other costs will you pay?
- Will classes be offered in the same format, location and schedule?
- Will the receiving program have the accreditation or state approval required for your intended profession?
- What happens if the teach-out institution changes its terms or cannot enroll you?
A teach-out plan is not a promise that every credit transfers or that completion is free. Ask for the agreement and a course-by-course evaluation in writing before withdrawing from your current college or paying a new deposit.

Transfer credit is decided by the receiving college
The U.S. Department of Education states: “Accreditation does not provide automatic acceptance by an institution of credit earned at another institution, nor does it give assurance of acceptance of graduates by employers.” The receiving institution—not the old college or its accreditor—normally decides which credits apply to its degree.
Compare a teach-out with an independent transfer
| Question | Teach-out through an agreement | Transfer you arrange yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Credit decision | The agreement may identify courses accepted for a specified program, but obtain the individual evaluation. | The receiving college applies its own transfer policy and may accept fewer credits. |
| Completion timeline | Often mapped in the plan; verify prerequisites and course availability. | Calculate remaining requirements after the written evaluation; sequencing can add terms. |
| Credential | Usually awarded by the receiving institution under the agreement. | Awarded by the new institution if all of its graduation rules are met. |
| Cost | Check tuition, fees and any special teach-out charges; “teach-out” does not mean free. | Compare tuition, fees, relocation, application and repeated-course costs. |
| Federal aid | Confirm the receiving school’s eligibility and your enrollment-based eligibility. | Apply the new school’s aid rules; prior aid does not carry over automatically. |
Get a written transfer evaluation
- Collect your unofficial and official transcript, course descriptions, syllabi, grades, contact hours and records of clinical, laboratory or practicum work.
- Send the same packet to each prospective receiving institution and request an individual, course-by-course evaluation.
- Ask the evaluator to identify accepted credits, rejected credits, general electives and courses that satisfy major requirements.
- Request a written degree map showing remaining credits, required terms, expected graduation date and total tuition and fees.
- Confirm that the institution and the specific program meet federal-aid and professional-licensing requirements before enrolling.
Receiving schools may limit the number of credits they accept even when the old college was accredited. A verbal estimate from an admissions representative is not enough for a high-cost decision.

If the college closes
Closure can trigger a teach-out or other completion arrangement, but the remedy differs by institution and state. Preserve your records before access to a student portal or campus office disappears.
Records to save
- Official transcripts and an additional personal copy of your unofficial transcript.
- Course descriptions, syllabi, reading lists and evidence of laboratory, clinical or practicum hours.
- Financial-aid award letters, enrollment records, payment receipts and account statements.
- The accreditation notice, closure announcement, teach-out agreement and every email or letter from the school.
- Licensure-related documentation, exam approvals and any state-board correspondence.
Ask the school where permanent transcripts will be stored. If a required teach-out plan is unavailable, contact the Department of Education and the state higher-education authority identified for your institution. Prospective receiving colleges can often explain which records they need to evaluate your work.
What happens to federal loans and possible discharge
Accreditation loss alone does not automatically cancel or forgive a student loan. A federal closed-school discharge is tied to a qualifying closure and specific timing and enrollment conditions. Department guidance describes eligibility when a school closes while you are enrolled or within 120 days after you withdraw, subject to the program’s rules.

Situations that can affect eligibility
- You may be ineligible if you complete a comparable program through a teach-out or by transferring credits before a discharge is granted.
- The date of closure, your withdrawal date and whether you completed the program matter; an accreditation announcement by itself does not establish eligibility.
- Private loans and institutional balances follow different contracts and are not automatically covered by federal closed-school rules.
Contact your federal loan servicer for an individual determination, submit any required application and keep making scheduled payments while the request is processed unless your servicer tells you otherwise. Keep copies of the application, confirmation and payment history.
Professional licenses and degree recognition
For regulated professions, the key question may be programmatic accreditation or state approval rather than the college’s overall accreditation. Nursing, teaching, counseling and other fields can have state-specific education and examination rules. A program that loses its specialized accreditation may leave graduates facing additional review or ineligibility, while a college-wide accreditation action can affect the institution’s federal status without answering the licensing question.
Ask the relevant state licensing board, in writing, whether your exact program, campus, enrollment dates and accreditation-action dates satisfy the education requirement. Ask the prospective receiving program the same question before transferring. Do not assume that an employer, licensing board or graduate school will accept the degree merely because the college was accredited when you enrolled.

- Identify the action. Obtain the accreditor’s notice and determine whether it is institution-wide, programmatic, a suspension, a loss of recognition affecting the accreditor, or a closure.
- Confirm dates. Record the final decision date, appeal status, effective date, any 120-day transition authorization and the last date for enrollment or disbursement.
- Ask for the teach-out plan. Request the receiving schools, course-acceptance terms, credential, schedule and all charges.
- Seek independent evaluations. Send your transcript and syllabi to more than one receiving college and obtain written credit decisions.
- Check aid before moving. Have the new financial-aid office confirm institutional eligibility, enrollment requirements and what you must submit.
- Check licensing requirements. Contact the state board and the receiving program if your career is regulated.
- Protect records and payments. Save academic and financial documents, keep loan payments current while any discharge review is pending and communicate with your servicer in writing.
- Escalate missing information. If the school does not provide a required plan or clear dates, contact the Department of Education, the accreditor and the state oversight agency.
Bottom line for students
A college losing accreditation creates a risk to federal aid and may disrupt your path, but it does not produce one automatic outcome. The safest course is to verify the exact accreditation action and effective date, obtain a written teach-out or transfer evaluation, confirm aid and licensing consequences with the new institutions and authorities, and treat loan discharge as a separate eligibility question rather than an automatic benefit.
