When you enter a stock order while the market is closed, it usually does not execute immediately. Your broker may hold it for the next eligible regular session, route it to a supported premarket or after-hours session, or let it expire or cancel according to the order’s time-in-force and session settings. Acceptance by the broker is not the same as execution by an exchange.
This explanation covers the common U.S.-listed-stock case. Exchange hours, holidays, trading halts, order types and broker policies differ, so review the current order ticket and your broker’s terms before submitting an order.

What happens after you submit an order while the market is closed?
The broker can accept your instruction even when the primary exchange is not in its regular session. The order then follows the combination of session selection, order type, security eligibility and time-in-force that you chose.

- Held for regular hours: If you did not select an eligible extended-hours session, the broker may keep the order pending until the next regular session.
- Routed in extended hours: If your broker supports the security, order type and selected premarket or after-hours session, the order may be eligible for trading before or after regular hours.
- Expired or cancelled: A day order, session-only order or another restricted instruction can end without a fill.
- Remaining unfilled: A limit order can stay pending while the market price remains outside your limit, subject to its duration and broker rules.
There is no single handling rule for every firm. The order status shown in your account—such as pending, queued, open, partially filled, filled, cancelled or expired—tells you what the broker has recorded, but the ticket’s terms determine what can happen next.

Will a stock order execute when the market opens?
It may, but an ordinary order entered overnight is not guaranteed to execute at the opening price or at all. The broker must first determine that the order is still active and eligible. Then available market prices, matching orders, price limits and exchange procedures determine whether a trade occurs.
The first regular-session trade can be established through an opening auction or other opening process. That price can differ substantially from the previous closing quote. News, company announcements and orders accumulated while the market was closed can change supply and demand before the open.
A regular market order does not promise the previous close, the opening auction price or any particular price. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission explains that orders placed while markets are closed are subject to conditions when markets reopen, unless trades occur in an extended-hours session. See the SEC’s After-Hours Trading: Understanding the Risks bulletin.

Can you place a stock order after hours?
Many brokers accept orders outside regular hours, but acceptance does not mean that every order can trade immediately. Extended-hours trading is a separate session, commonly divided into premarket and after-hours periods, with its own eligible securities, order types, cutoffs and duration rules.
Regular-hours-only instructions
If the ticket is set for regular trading only, the broker may hold the order for the next regular session. A market order entered at night can therefore become executable only after regular trading resumes, and the execution price can be different from the last displayed close.
Extended-hours instructions
If you explicitly select premarket or after-hours trading and the broker supports the security and order type, the order may be sent to a venue during that selected session. Fidelity’s order guidance, for example, describes extended-hours orders as valid only for the selected premarket or after-hours session and notes that eligible order types and conditions apply. Those are Fidelity customer terms, not a universal rule for every broker. Review your own ticket.
Why extended-hours fills can be harder
The SEC warns that it can be more difficult to execute an order or obtain as favorable a price outside regular hours. Participation is thinner, displayed quotes can be less representative, and a large price move can occur when news is released after the close. An after-hours price also may not reflect the price available during the regular-session close or at the next opening. Read the SEC guidance at sec.gov/files/investor/pubs/afterhours.htm.

What price will you get if you place an order after the market closes?
The answer depends first on whether the order trades in an extended session or waits for regular hours. In either case, the previous close is only a historical reference; it is not a promised execution price.
Market orders
A market order tells the broker to seek execution at available prices under the applicable session rules. If it becomes executable after an overnight move, the fill can be above or below the prior close. In a less liquid session, available prices can change quickly and the order may fill in pieces at different prices.
Limit orders
A buy limit sets the highest price you are willing to pay; a sell limit sets the lowest price you are willing to accept. A limit order provides price control but not a fill. If no matching order reaches your limit, it can remain open until its time-in-force ends or you cancel it. A stock can move through your displayed price without a fill if there is insufficient volume, the order is not eligible for that session or other orders have priority.

When regular trading resumes, the stock may gap higher or lower because of overnight information. A limit order can protect against an unexpectedly expensive buy or cheap sale, but it can also be left unfilled if the opening price is outside the limit.

Will an unfilled after-hours order carry over?
Do not assume it will. The order may be cancelled when the selected session ends, or it may be entered into a later session if the ticket expressly allows that behavior. The SEC specifically advises investors to ask their broker whether an unexecuted after-hours order is cancelled or automatically entered when regular trading begins. Its wording is: “Check with your broker to see whether orders not executed during the after-hours trading session will be cancelled or whether they will be automatically entered when regular trading hours begin.”
A session-limited instruction can therefore disappear even though the stock continues trading the next day. Conversely, an order designed to persist can remain active, subject to the broker’s rules, price conditions and any maximum duration. Check the order history and open-orders list after each session rather than relying on an assumption about carryover.
How time-in-force changes what happens overnight
Time-in-force tells the broker how long an order should remain eligible. The labels and exact behavior vary by broker and security, but these are the central distinctions.

What changes on weekends and market holidays?
Weekends and exchange holidays are not ordinary overnight closures. There is no regular U.S. listed-stock session on those days, although some securities or venues may have separate schedules. An order entered before a weekend or holiday may wait for the next eligible session, trade in an available extended session, or expire according to its instructions.
The extra calendar time gives prices more opportunity to move before trading resumes. A Monday opening price, for example, can reflect news released after Friday’s close and may be far from Friday’s last trade. Confirm the next session date and the order’s expiration date in the broker’s calendar and ticket.
How is a trading halt different from a closed market?
A scheduled close affects the market’s normal timetable. A trading halt is a temporary interruption affecting a security or venue and can occur during otherwise open hours. During a halt, the broker may accept, reject, hold or cancel new orders under its rules, and previously submitted orders can be subject to special handling.

Choosing an order approach when the market is closed
Use the decision axes below instead of assuming that one order type is safest in every situation.
| Choice | Potential benefit | Main risk or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Wait for regular hours | More participation and generally clearer regular-session pricing. | The stock can move before the session opens, and a market order can still receive a materially different price. |
| Use extended hours | Opportunity to react before or after the regular session. | Lower liquidity, wider price variability, fewer eligible securities or order types, and a possible session-end cancellation. |
| Market order | Prioritizes seeking a fill when the order is eligible. | No fixed execution price; the price can move while the order is being matched. |
| Limit order | Sets a maximum buy or minimum sell price. | No guarantee of execution, especially during a gap or thin session. |
| Day or session-only duration | Prevents an old instruction from remaining active unexpectedly. | The order can expire before the desired regular session. |
| GTC duration | Keeps the instruction active across multiple days when supported. | It can remain exposed longer than intended; maximum duration and session eligibility still apply. |
Checklist before submitting a closed-market order
- Confirm the security: Check that the stock is eligible for the selected session and that the symbol and share quantity are correct.
- Read the session selector: Identify whether the order is for regular hours, premarket, after-hours or a broker-defined combination.
- Choose price control deliberately: Decide whether a market order’s uncertain price or a limit order’s possible non-execution better fits your objective.
- Set the duration: Check the exact expiration time, maximum GTC period and whether the duration applies only to the selected session.
- Review the confirmation screen: Look for warnings about extended-hours eligibility, order-type restrictions, estimated buying power and cancellation behavior.
- Monitor status: After submission, verify whether the order is open, queued, partially filled, cancelled or expired. A pending status is not a fill.
- Reassess before the next session: If news or prices changed, cancel or replace the order only after confirming that the original order was not already executed.
Questions to ask your broker
- Does this security trade in the premarket or after-hours session through my account?
- Which order types are accepted outside regular hours?
- Is my order active only for this session, or will it be entered again when regular trading starts?
- What exactly does “day” mean on this ticket?
- How long does a GTC order remain active, including weekends and holidays?
- What happens to open orders during a trading halt, corporate action or venue closure?
- Are partial fills possible, and how are any remaining shares handled?
Venue rules are not universal broker rules
Exchange and alternative-venue filings can describe particular session windows and time-in-force provisions, but those provisions apply to the named venue and should not be generalized to every broker or exchange. For example, the SEC filing for Cboe BZX’s extended-hours sessions is a venue-specific rule document, available at sec.gov/files/rules/sro/cboebzx/2025/34-102716.pdf. Your broker may route orders differently, limit access to certain securities or impose different cutoffs.
The practical rule is to treat the order ticket and current customer agreement as controlling for your account. Public exchange hours and regulatory guidance explain the framework, but they do not replace the broker’s session and time-in-force terms.
