What Happens to SIP Returns When You Stop Investing Before Five Years?

By TheFinanceBase Team 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stopping your SIP instalments before five years does not automatically sell the mutual-fund units you already bought. Those units remain invested, and their value continues to move with the scheme’s net asset value (NAV) until you redeem or switch them. Your eventual result is therefore determined by the NAV on each purchase date, the NAV when you exit, the scheme’s exit-load rules and the tax treatment that applies to each holding—not by a universal five-year return or penalty.

Stopping contributions and redeeming are separate decisions. You can stop future debits, leave the accumulated units invested, and redeem later; or you can stop and redeem immediately. The financial consequences differ, so decide them separately.

Stopping a SIP is not the same as withdrawing it

A systematic investment plan (SIP) is an instruction to invest a fixed amount at recurring intervals. Each instalment buys units of a mutual-fund scheme at that day’s applicable NAV. If you cancel, pause or otherwise stop the instruction, the future purchases stop. Units bought by earlier instalments remain in your folio unless you submit a redemption or switch request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving the units invested means their market value can rise or fall after the SIP stops. A redemption converts the selected units to cash at the applicable redemption price. Because those are different actions, there is no single “return after stopping a SIP” number. The result depends on what you do with the existing units and when you do it.

What happens when you only stop future instalments?

  • No new units are purchased through that SIP instruction after the effective stop date.
  • Existing units continue to participate in the scheme’s gains, losses and distributions according to the scheme terms.
  • The NAV on a later redemption date determines the gross value of the units sold.
  • You can redeem all units, redeem part of them, or switch to another scheme if the scheme and platform permit it.

What happens when you stop and redeem?

The units you specify are sold at the scheme’s applicable redemption price. Any exit load is deducted through that price, and the transaction may create a capital gain or loss for tax purposes. The holding period and acquisition details of the units being sold matter; a five-year headline does not replace those calculations.

Why five years does not produce a standard SIP return

A SIP spreads purchases across multiple dates and NAV levels. The first instalment may have been invested several years before the last one, so the units do not all have the same holding period or cost. The scheme’s asset category, market path, purchase timing and chosen redemption date can produce very different outcomes for two investors who both stop after, for example, three years.

Official investor guidance explains redemption and tax mechanics, but it does not establish a scheme-independent average return for SIPs stopped before five years. Do not treat five years as a guaranteed profit horizon, a universal break-even point or a rule that removes every cost.

The variables that determine your outcome

Variable Why it matters
Scheme and asset category Equity, debt, hybrid and other categories follow different risk, valuation and tax rules.
Instalment dates and NAVs Each instalment buys a different number of units, so the cost of the units sold is not one single SIP price.
Redemption date and NAV The NAV on the date used for pricing determines the gross value of the units redeemed.
Exit-load schedule The scheme may charge a load for selling units within a specified period; the schedule is scheme-specific.
Tax classification and transaction date Capital-gains rates and definitions depend on the fund, holding period, acquisition and transfer dates, and the law then in force.

How NAV turns instalments into units and value

For each instalment, divide the amount invested by the applicable NAV (after accounting for any relevant transaction rules) to determine the units purchased. Later, multiply the units redeemed by the applicable NAV to obtain the value before any exit load. Since NAV changes daily, a later market fall can reduce the value even if the SIP had been running successfully, while a rise can increase it.

AMFI describes the redemption-price relationship as: Redemption Price = Applicable NAV*(1- Exit Load, if any). See the AMFI explanation of NAV and redemption pricing. The formula shows how a load affects the amount paid for a redemption; it does not predict whether your overall investment is profitable.

Why the last instalment can matter disproportionately

If markets fell shortly before you stopped, the most recent instalments may have bought fewer or more units depending on the NAV path. Those units may have a short holding period and may still be inside an exit-load window. Conversely, a market rise can make recent purchases valuable quickly, but selling them may still trigger the scheme’s short-term load terms. Evaluate each purchase date rather than assuming that “three years of SIP” means every unit is three years old.

Exit load: a scheme-specific cost, not a five-year rule

SEBI states that mutual funds can have different load structures and that investors should check the relevant scheme documents. An exit load generally applies only when the scheme’s stated conditions are met, often by reference to how long the units being redeemed have been held. The exact schedule can differ by scheme, plan, option and transaction date. Consult the current scheme information before placing a redemption order; SEBI’s investor guidance is available at SEBI’s exit-load page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SEBI’s page gives an illustrative equity-fund calculation: an investment of ₹1,00,000 grows to ₹1,05,000 and a 1% load produces a ₹1,050 charge. That is a worked example, not an industry-wide rate. Your scheme could have a different percentage, a different period, no load, or multiple tiers.

How to check whether your units are inside the load period

  1. Open the scheme’s latest offer document, scheme information document, or official exit-load schedule.
  2. Identify the load period and percentage for the exact plan and option you own.
  3. List the dates of the instalments whose units you intend to redeem.
  4. Ask the fund house or platform how the load is applied to a partial redemption and confirm the applicable date used for pricing.
  5. Compare the estimated redemption amount after the load with the amount you need to receive.

A load can reduce the redemption price even when the NAV is above your purchase cost. It should be treated as one input into the decision, not as proof that the investment has made or lost money.

Tax when you redeem before five years

There is no general tax exemption or penalty that begins exactly at the five-year mark for every SIP. Tax depends on the fund’s classification, the units’ acquisition and holding periods, the transfer date and applicable law. A tax professional or the fund’s current tax statement can help with an individual calculation.

Equity-oriented funds subject to STT

AMFI lists the following treatment for qualifying equity-oriented fund units, subject to the statutory conditions it describes: for transfers on or after 23 July 2024, short-term capital gains are taxed at 20%; long-term capital gains are taxed at 12.5% on gains above an annual ₹1,25,000 threshold. See the current AMFI mutual-fund tax guidance for the conditions and definitions.

These rates do not mean that every SIP redemption before five years is taxed at 20%. Whether a unit is short- or long-term, whether the fund qualifies as equity-oriented and whether the transfer meets the relevant STT conditions must be established for the actual transaction.

Specified debt-oriented funds and section 50AA

AMFI says the specified-mutual-fund definition under section 50AA applies from financial year 2025–26 to funds investing more than 65% in debt and money-market instruments and to qualifying funds of funds. Gains covered by section 50AA are treated as short-term. The Income Tax Department explains that such gains are taxed at the taxpayer’s applicable rates; consult its capital-gains guidance and verify the fund’s classification for the relevant year.

Debt-oriented fund taxation has changed over time, so do not apply a current rule to an older transaction without checking the effective date. A statement from a platform may show gains, but it does not replace checking the legal classification and the tax year.

Illustrative calculation: stopping after three instalments

The following is a purely hypothetical illustration, not a market return or a forecast. It assumes three ₹5,000 instalments, no transaction charges other than a hypothetical 1% exit load, and a redemption when the NAV is ₹55. The load assumption may not match your scheme.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Instalment Amount Purchase NAV Units bought
January 2023 ₹5,000 ₹50 100.0000
July 2023 ₹5,000 ₹40 125.0000
January 2024 ₹5,000 ₹60 83.3333
Total ₹15,000 — 308.3333

If all 308.3333 units are redeemed at an NAV of ₹55, the gross value is approximately ₹16,958.33. Applying the hypothetical 1% load gives an estimated net redemption amount of about ₹16,788.75, before tax. The apparent gain versus ₹15,000 of contributions is therefore about ₹1,788.75 before tax. In an actual case, the load may apply only to some units, and the tax result cannot be calculated without the fund category, transaction date and holding-period details.

How to calculate your own result

  1. Export the transaction history. Record every instalment date, amount, NAV and units allotted. Include any additional purchases, switches or redemptions.
  2. Decide what you are evaluating. A “stop only” scenario leaves units invested; a “stop and redeem” scenario uses a specific redemption date and number of units.
  3. Choose the redemption NAV. Use the NAV applicable under the scheme’s cut-off and transaction rules, not an intraday quote or an assumed future price.
  4. Calculate gross value. Multiply the units being redeemed by that applicable NAV.
  5. Apply the actual exit-load schedule. Check which units are inside the stated load period and use the percentage in the current scheme document.
  6. Separate tax from performance. Classify each taxable gain using the fund type, acquisition date, transfer date and current law. Keep tax estimates separate from the NAV return and load.
  7. Compare alternatives. Run the same calculation for leaving the units invested, redeeming part, or switching, while noting any switch-related charges or tax consequences disclosed by the scheme.

Options after you stop contributions

Leave the units invested

This keeps your existing exposure to the scheme. It may suit an investor whose goal, risk tolerance and asset allocation still match the fund, but the value remains subject to market movements and scheme decisions. Review the investment rather than assuming that waiting until five years guarantees a better result.

Redeem all or part of the units

A full redemption provides cash and ends exposure to the scheme for the units sold. A partial redemption can meet a near-term need while leaving some units invested. Check the load schedule, the applicable NAV and the tax impact before submitting the order.

Switch to another scheme

A switch is usually treated as a redemption from the original scheme and a purchase in the destination scheme. That can trigger an exit load or capital-gains event, depending on the transaction and applicable rules. Read both schemes’ documents and confirm the tax treatment before switching.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Assuming cancellation sells everything. Confirm whether you cancelled only the recurring instruction or also submitted a redemption order.
  • Using one average purchase price without records. Different instalment dates create different unit quantities and holding periods.
  • Calling five years a penalty-free threshold. Exit-load periods are set by each scheme, while tax depends on classification and law.
  • Applying equity tax rates to a debt fund. Check the category and whether section 50AA applies for the relevant financial year.
  • Using the displayed NAV as the guaranteed payout. The applicable NAV and any exit load determine the redemption price under the scheme’s transaction rules.
  • Ignoring the redemption date. A result calculated today can change materially if the NAV moves before the order is priced.

A practical decision checklist

  • Have future SIP debits actually stopped, and have you received confirmation?
  • How many units do you own, and what are the dates and NAVs for each purchase?
  • What is your goal for the money and your acceptable risk while the units remain invested?
  • What exit-load rule applies to the exact units you plan to sell?
  • Which tax category applies to the scheme, and which transfer date will be used?
  • Are you redeeming all units, part of them, or switching—and have you compared the net amounts?
  • Have you used current scheme documents and tax guidance rather than a generic five-year rule?

The reliable way to answer “what happens to my SIP returns?” is to model your actual instalments against a stated redemption date. Stopping early changes the flow of new purchases; it does not erase the units already accumulated. Your final result emerges from the NAV path, the units sold, any applicable scheme load and the tax rules that govern that specific transaction.
