Reaching PPF maturity does not automatically close the account or transfer the money elsewhere. Under the Public Provident Fund Scheme, 2019, you can apply to withdraw the full balance with due interest, keep the account open without new deposits, or elect a further five-year extension that allows deposits. The maturity date is measured from the end of the financial year in which the account was opened—not simply 15 calendar years from the opening date.
What happens to a PPF account after 15 years?
At maturity, your accumulated contributions and the interest credited under the scheme remain in the PPF account until you choose what to do. There is no automatic payout merely because the 15-year period has ended. The Public Provident Fund Scheme, 2019 provides three routes:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Close the account and receive the balance with interest due under the scheme.
- Retain the account without making further deposits while it continues to earn the applicable scheme interest.
- Extend the account for another five-year block and continue depositing, provided you make the election within the prescribed deadline.
Your choice should reflect when you need the money, whether you plan to keep contributing, and whether leaving the funds in a government-backed PPF account suits your broader financial and tax position. The scheme sets out the mechanics; it does not determine which option is best for an individual.

The 15 years are counted from the end of the financial year in which the account was opened. This is why adding 15 years to the day you signed the account-opening form can produce the wrong date. The National Savings Institute describes the period as 15 complete financial years, while the Scheme refers to expiry of 15 years from the end of that opening financial year.

An illustrative date calculation
Suppose an account was opened during the financial year ending March 31, 2011. The 15-year period is measured from that March 31 year-end, so the account reaches maturity at the end of the corresponding 15-year period, rather than on the 15th anniversary of the account-opening day. Use your passbook, account statement and the accounts office’s records to confirm the operative maturity date before filing a closure or extension request.
Accounts opened in different months of the same financial year generally share the same financial-year reference point for this calculation. If your records show a discrepancy, ask the accounts office to reconcile the opening year and maturity date in writing.
Your three choices at maturity
| Choice | What happens to the balance | What happens to future contributions |
|---|---|---|
| Close and withdraw | The entire balance, including interest due under the scheme, is paid after you submit the required closure application. | No further PPF contributions are made to that closed account. |
| Keep open without deposits | The balance stays in the account and continues earning the applicable scheme rate. | No new deposits are made, but the account may remain open for any period permitted by the Scheme. |
| Extend with deposits | The account continues into a new five-year block under the extension provisions. | Deposits may continue after a valid, timely election for the extension-with-deposits option. |
Close and withdraw the balance
To close the account, submit Form 3 to the accounts office where the PPF account is maintained. The amount payable is the account balance plus interest due through the last day of the month immediately preceding the month in which the account is closed. For example, if the account is closed during June, the Scheme’s calculation runs through May 31; the accounts office determines the final amount and processing date.
Because closure is application-based, do not assume that the balance will be sent to you automatically on the maturity date. Confirm the form, identity requirements, linked bank details and any local processing requirements with the relevant accounts office.

Keep the account open without making deposits
The Scheme expressly permits an account holder to retain the account after maturity without any further deposits for any period. The balance continues to earn interest at the rate applicable to the Scheme. In this mode, the account holder may make one withdrawal in each year, for any amount within the available balance.
This option can suit someone who wants continuing interest and occasional access but does not want to commit to another five-year contribution period. Since the account can remain open for an unspecified period, keep statements and review the account periodically rather than treating it as automatically closed after five years.
Extend the account and continue deposits
The extension-with-deposits route creates a further five-year block. You must elect this option in Form 4 within the period allowed after maturity. A valid election is important: simply paying money into the account after maturity does not itself establish a valid extension.

During an extension, follow the accounts office’s instructions for recording the election and accepting deposits. Retain the acknowledged Form 4 or other written confirmation so you can demonstrate which extension status was selected.

The one-year election deadline and what happens if you miss it
The Scheme requires the option to extend with deposits to be made before one year expires from the account’s maturity. If no election is given within that period, deposits cannot be made under the extension-with-deposits route. A deposit made despite that status is irregular and must be refunded by the accounts office without interest.
The Scheme also prevents a later switch back to the with-deposits option once an account has continued without deposits for more than a year. This makes the first year after maturity a decision window, not a trial period that can be reversed indefinitely.
- Confirm the maturity date calculated from the opening financial year.
- Decide whether you need a full withdrawal, ongoing retention without deposits, or another five-year contribution block.
- If you want to contribute, submit Form 4 and obtain written confirmation before the one-year period ends.
- If you are retaining the account without deposits, do not make an unsolicited payment expecting it to reactivate contribution privileges.
- If a post-maturity payment is rejected or refunded, check whether the account was recorded as no-deposit continuation and ask the accounts office to explain the status.
For a missed deadline, the existing maturity balance remains subject to the scheme’s interest provisions; the Scheme states that it continues to earn interest up to the end of the month preceding closure. Confirm the account-specific treatment and any refund procedure directly with the accounts office.
Step-by-step: closing the account
- Verify maturity. Check that 15 complete financial years have elapsed from the end of the opening financial year.
- Obtain Form 3. Use the closure form prescribed for the PPF account and complete the account and payment details exactly as shown in your records.
- Submit it to the accounts office. Ask for an acknowledgement and the expected closure date.
- Check the interest cut-off. The payable interest is due through the last day of the month before the closure month, not necessarily through the day you receive the funds.
- Reconcile the payment. Compare the amount credited with the final statement, including the principal contributions and due interest.
Step-by-step: electing a five-year extension with deposits
- Confirm the one-year window. Calculate the final date for exercising the option from the recorded maturity date.
- Complete Form 4. State that you are choosing continuation with deposits and provide the account information requested by the form.
- File it with the accounts office. Submit it before the deadline and retain the stamped acknowledgement or electronic confirmation.
- Wait for status confirmation. Do not rely solely on a payment receipt; verify that the account is coded for extension with deposits.
- Plan contributions under the applicable rules. Ask the accounts office about the accepted payment channels, annual limits and any additional documentation for the new block.
How to choose among the options
| Your priority | Most aligned route | Question to answer before acting |
|---|---|---|
| You need the entire corpus for a known expense | Close and withdraw | Have you allowed for the interest cut-off through the preceding month-end? |
| You want the money invested but may need occasional access | Retain without deposits | Can one withdrawal per year meet your expected liquidity needs? |
| You want to keep adding money for another five years | Extend with deposits | Can you file Form 4 within the one-year election window? |
| You are undecided about future contributions | Get account-specific guidance before choosing | Would leaving the account without deposits for more than a year remove the contribution option you may later need? |
These are decision aids, not individualized investment or tax recommendations. Consider your emergency cash, planned expenses, other investments and need for flexibility before selecting a route.

What happens to interest after maturity?
Interest does not stop merely because the account reaches 15 years. If you retain the account without deposits, the balance continues to earn the applicable PPF scheme rate. If you close the account, the Scheme provides for interest due through the last day of the month preceding the closure month. If you extend with deposits, the account remains governed by the applicable PPF rules for the new block.
The rate is variable and can change under the scheme. Avoid relying on a historical or promotional rate when estimating the post-maturity value; use the rate officially applicable to the relevant period and ask the accounts office how it is applied to your account.
Tax information and its limits
The National Savings Institute’s PPF account page states generally that PPF interest is free from income tax under Section 10 of the Income-tax Act. That general statement is not a complete determination of every person’s current tax position. Your tax result can depend on the law in force, your residency and filing circumstances, and how a withdrawal is reported. Obtain current advice from a qualified tax professional before making a decision solely for tax reasons.

Contribution amounts and irregular payments
The National Savings Institute account information lists an annual minimum deposit of ₹500 and an annual maximum of ₹1,50,000. Those figures are scheme-account information published by the NSI, not a promise that every post-maturity transaction will be accepted without checking the account’s extension status.

After maturity, the key distinction is whether your account is validly extended with deposits. A payment made when the account is in a status that does not permit deposits is irregular and, under the Scheme, must be refunded without interest. Keep the payment receipt, refund advice and account statement together if this occurs.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Counting 15 years from the opening day
This can make you act too early or too late. Recalculate from the end of the opening financial year and verify the date with the accounts office.
Assuming maturity triggers an automatic payout
The Scheme describes closure on application. If you want the money, submit Form 3 and confirm that the account has actually been closed.

Confusing no-deposit retention with an extension
Both leave the account open, but only the extension-with-deposits route permits further contributions. Record which option you selected and keep the acknowledgement.
Waiting beyond the contribution-election window
Once the one-year period has passed, a later deposit can be treated as irregular and refunded without interest. Put the deadline on your calendar as soon as maturity is confirmed.
Using a fixed interest rate in a projection
The applicable rate is variable. Label any projection by its rate period and verify the current official rate before relying on it.
