If AI-related shares suffer a sharp fall, a defined-contribution (DC) pension can lose value when its funds hold those companies directly or indirectly. The size of any fall depends on the funds in your scheme, how concentrated the exposure is, what happens to other assets, how long you have until retirement and how you intend to take the money. A defined-benefit (DB) pension is calculated mainly from salary and service rather than a personal investment pot, although market losses can affect the scheme’s assets and funding position. No current evidence establishes that an AI crash will happen, how large it would be or what any individual pension would lose.
This is a UK-focused explanation. The only reliable way to assess your own exposure is to identify your pension type and inspect the current holdings and asset-allocation information for your particular funds.

What would happen to a pension if AI stocks crashed?
The immediate effect would usually be a fall in the market value of investments that are exposed to the affected companies or to related parts of the economy. In a DC pension, that lower market value normally appears as a lower pot value. The impact could be limited if the exposure is small and other assets hold up, or larger if AI-linked companies represent a substantial share of the portfolio.
A crash in one group of shares does not automatically reduce every pension by the same percentage. Funds can own different companies, regions and asset classes, and managers may change their holdings. Correlations can also rise during a crisis, so assets that looked diversified in normal conditions may fall together. The outcome is therefore portfolio-specific, not something that can be inferred from the word “pension” or from a fund’s marketing label.

Is my pension defined contribution or defined benefit?
Start with the type of arrangement. UK pensions generally fall into two broad categories, and an AI-stock shock reaches them in different ways.
Defined-contribution pensions
In a DC, or money-purchase, pension, contributions are invested. Your eventual pot reflects contributions, investment performance, charges and the way you take benefits. If the underlying investments fall, the displayed value of the pot can fall too. Exposure may be direct, such as shares in a technology company, or indirect through an index fund, a diversified fund, a private-market investment or a business supplying the technology sector.

Two people in the same workplace scheme can have different exposure because they selected different funds, use different default vintages or have different proportions in equities, bonds, property and cash. A statement that says “global equity” does not reveal a precise AI percentage; the current factsheet and underlying holdings are needed.
Defined-benefit pensions
A DB pension usually promises an income based mainly on salary and length of service. It is not an individual investment account whose promised benefit moves day by day with a stock index. A fall in a particular share therefore does not normally cut a member’s promised pension by that share’s percentage.
However, the scheme invests assets to meet its future obligations. A market shock can change the value of those assets, interest rates, inflation expectations and the cost of liabilities. The Pensions Regulator (TPR) says the effect on DB funding varies with asset allocation and hedging. A DB benefit is not wholly insulated from market conditions, but neither is a member’s outcome determined by the daily value of one technology stock.
| Question | DC arrangement | DB arrangement |
|---|---|---|
| What is promised? | A pot whose value depends on contributions and investment performance. | Usually an income related to salary and service under the scheme rules. |
| How can an AI-share fall appear? | The pot value can decline when exposed holdings decline. | Scheme assets and funding can weaken, without an automatic one-for-one cut to the promised benefit. |
| What determines the effect? | Fund holdings, concentration, diversification, time to retirement and access plan. | Asset allocation, hedging, liabilities, contributions and the scheme’s funding position. |
How can a pension be exposed to AI stocks without naming them?
AI exposure is not necessarily a separate line on a pension statement. It can enter through several layers:

- Direct holdings: a fund owns shares in companies whose products or revenues are closely tied to AI.
- Market-capitalisation indexes: a passive global or regional fund can hold a larger weight in companies whose share prices have grown rapidly, even when the fund never describes itself as an AI fund.
- Connected sectors: semiconductor manufacturers, cloud infrastructure, data-centre operators, software suppliers and other businesses may move with AI expectations.
- Other pooled investments: a multi-asset fund can own an equity fund that in turn owns AI-linked companies, making the exposure less visible.
- Economic and financing links: companies with common customers, lenders or suppliers can become correlated during a sell-off.
TPR’s guidance published on 22 October 2026 warns trustees that concentration can be hidden across sectors, financing channels and asset classes. A portfolio may look diversified by fund name while sharing the same underlying economic risk. Only a look-through assessment of the whole portfolio can show the aggregate exposure.
Why would two savers experience very different losses?
Five factors matter more than the label on a pension statement.
1. The actual holdings
A fund holding a small number of large technology companies has a different sensitivity from a fund spread across bonds, cash, property and shares in many regions. Holdings change, so an old factsheet may not describe today’s exposure.
2. Concentration and correlations
Concentration magnifies the effect of a fall in a particular group. Diversification can reduce single-company risk, but it is not a guarantee: in a severe downturn, correlations between apparently different investments can increase.
3. Time until benefits are needed
A saver with decades before retirement has more time for contributions and market cycles to influence the eventual outcome than someone who plans to draw a large amount soon. Time does not guarantee recovery, and no source can promise that prices will return to a previous level.
4. The way benefits will be taken
Someone drawing flexible income may sell units after a fall, while someone leaving the pot invested may not sell immediately. Buying an annuity, taking cash or using drawdown creates different timing and liquidity needs. The same market movement can therefore produce different practical consequences.

5. For DB schemes, the funding structure
Asset allocation, liability matching and hedging influence how market volatility affects the scheme’s funding position. Members do not have enough information from a share-price chart alone to infer that effect.
What does the current regulator guidance say?
TPR’s “AI concentration risk: Action for trustees”, published 22 October 2026, says AI-linked companies make up a large share of major stock-market indices and that exposure may be difficult to see. The guidance is addressed to trustees, not a personal trading instruction, but it shows the questions a well-governed scheme should be asking.
- Measure aggregate direct and indirect exposure across the whole portfolio, including default arrangements.
- Use scenario analysis for a severe but plausible AI-related downturn rather than relying on a single historical statistic.
- Test whether diversification would still work if correlations changed under stress.
- Review concentration created by passive, market-capitalisation-weighted strategies.
- Challenge investment managers and advisers about assumptions, liquidity, leverage and how exposures are changing.
Ben Gunnee, TPR’s Executive Director of Market Oversight, said in the regulator’s 22 October 2026 press release: “We expect all schemes to maintain high standards of investment governance and manage risk over the short, medium and long term.” That is a governance expectation for schemes, not a forecast of pension losses.
How can I check whether my own pension has AI exposure?
You cannot establish exposure from a provider’s name or from a generic “balanced” description. Use the documents for the specific fund and date, and record what they actually show.
- Identify the arrangement: confirm whether it is DC, DB or a combination, and note whether you have more than one pension.
- List each fund and its percentage: use the latest statement or online account, including default and self-selected funds.
- Open the fund factsheets: look for the asset split, top holdings, index tracked, geographic exposure and any stated sector limits.
- Check the date and methodology: holdings can change, and a top-10 list is not the same as a complete look-through analysis.
- Ask the provider precise questions: request the current aggregate exposure to relevant technology companies or sectors, how indirect exposure is measured and how often it is reviewed.
- Compare the information with your retirement plan: note when you expect to need the money and whether withdrawals would be flexible or a large one-off amount.
For a DB scheme, ask for the latest member booklet and funding information rather than trying to estimate your personal benefit from equity holdings. Individual advice may be appropriate where a decision about transfers, contributions or access is being considered.
What if a crash happens near my retirement date?
Market volatility matters more when withdrawals are close because selling units after a fall can turn a temporary market value into a permanent reduction in the amount left to fund future income. TPR’s guidance on supporting DC savers in the current economic climate (12 January 2023) stresses that people at different stages of their retirement journey can be affected differently and that short-term reactions may crystallise losses.

That does not mean moving automatically to cash, selling a fund or transferring a pension is right. Such actions can create charges, tax consequences, lost guarantees or a different investment risk. Review the scheme’s published glide path, any options for delaying withdrawals and the cash-flow you actually need, then obtain regulated guidance or advice if the decision is material.

What is a proportionate response for a pension saver?
There is no universal “AI-proof” fund and the evidence does not support panic-selling, an automatic switch to cash or buying a particular product. A proportionate process is:
- Keep a current record of every pension and its fund choices.
- Check whether your overall exposure is unintentionally concentrated across several pensions.
- Match investment risk to the date and method by which you expect to use the money.
- Read charges, guarantees and restrictions before changing funds or transferring.
- Use free UK guidance services or a regulated financial adviser when a decision is complex or irreversible.
- Revisit the plan when your retirement date, contributions or spending needs change, rather than reacting to a single headline.

If AI-linked shares are one part of a fund that also owns bonds and other assets, a fall in those shares could reduce the pot by less than the fall in the AI segment. The actual result would depend on the fund’s current weights and on whether other holdings also declined.
A concentrated self-selected equity fund
If most of a saver’s pot is in a narrow technology strategy, an AI-driven repricing could have a larger immediate effect. The saver’s planned withdrawals and remaining time would determine how consequential that fall became.

A DB member
The member’s promised formula would normally remain governed by the scheme rules, while trustees manage the effect of market movements on assets and liabilities. Funding actions, employer support and hedging—not the member’s personal share count—shape the scheme-level response.
What is the bottom line?
An AI-stock crash could lower a DC pension pot when it owns affected investments, directly or through broad funds. It will not produce one standard loss for all savers. Identify whether you have DC or DB benefits, inspect the current underlying exposure, consider your retirement timetable and access plan, and avoid treating a market headline as personal financial advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I see an AI percentage on my pension statement?
Usually not. Statements commonly show fund names and broad asset categories; the percentage, if available, must be inferred from the fund’s current holdings and methodology. Ask the provider how it measures direct and indirect exposure and when that information was last updated.
Would a global index fund definitely fall as much as AI shares?
No. A global index contains many companies and countries, so its return depends on all of its constituents and their weights. It may still have meaningful exposure to large technology companies, but the index’s result cannot be read from the performance of one AI-related share.
Does a DB pension guarantee that market crashes cannot affect me?
The benefit formula generally does not move one-for-one with share prices, but the scheme’s assets and funding position can be affected. The practical implications depend on the scheme’s liabilities, hedging, contributions and rules.
Who can tell me whether changing funds is suitable?
Your scheme administrator can explain available funds, charges and published risk information. For a personalised decision involving retirement income, transfers or tax, use impartial UK guidance or a suitably regulated financial adviser; a provider’s general information is not a personal recommendation.
