Clear every outstanding amount, obtain a written payoff figure for any EMI, redeem points before you submit the closure request, and give the issuer a verified bank account for residual credits or later refunds. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) requires an issuer to honor a closure request within seven working days after dues are paid, and to transfer any credit balance to the cardholder’s bank account.
EMI foreclosure, refund routing and reward-point forfeiture are governed partly by the individual card agreement. A card can therefore close under the RBI process while the financial consequences differ between issuers.

Closure is different from blocking the card
Temporary blocking or deactivation stops transactions but keeps the account relationship open. Account closure ends that relationship. The RBI describes the distinction this way: “Closure of a credit card on the other hand amounts to termination of the account-based relationship between the cardholder and the card-issuer.” A blocked card can still have active EMIs, pending refunds and rewards; a closed account must be settled and handled under the issuer’s post-closure procedures.
Do not treat a damaged, lost or unused card as closed merely because transactions are disabled. Ask the issuer to confirm that the account itself—not just the physical or virtual card—has been terminated.

What the RBI closure process requires
Seven working days after dues are cleared
RBI credit-card directions require the issuer to honor a closure request within seven working days, subject to payment of all dues. If money is outstanding, the issuer must tell you the amount due without waiting for the next billing cycle. The seven-working-day clock does not include the time you take to pay that amount.
Multiple request channels and confirmation
Issuers must provide more than one way to request closure. Use an accepted channel such as the issuer’s app, internet banking, customer-care process or written request, and save the request number, date and acknowledgement. The issuer must notify you when the account is closed.
Penalty for an avoidable delay
Under the RBI directions, an issuer that delays closure beyond seven working days when no outstanding remains must pay ₹500 per calendar day. This is a regulatory penalty for the issuer’s delay, not a waiver of any amount you still owe.

Credit balances must be returned
After closure, a positive balance—created, for example, by an overpayment or a reversed transaction—must be transferred to your bank account. The RBI rule establishes the transfer obligation; the issuer’s terms determine the verification and operational steps used to complete it.

What happens to a credit-card EMI?
Never assume that an EMI will continue unchanged once the card account is closed. The reviewed agreements show that closure can trigger immediate repayment, but there is no single foreclosure formula for every Indian card.
Immediate payoff can be required
Federal Bank OneCard terms state that linked card dues and EMI facilities become immediately due when the customer closes the card. Its separate EMI terms describe foreclosure as termination of the EMI and debit of the principal outstanding, interest for the opted tenure and applicable charges to the card account, with the consolidated amount demandable immediately.
That is an issuer-specific example, not a universal RBI rule. Another issuer may calculate the amount differently, permit a separate repayment route or apply different charges. Only a written payoff quote from your issuer tells you what closure will cost.

Ask for these figures before closing
- Principal outstanding on every active EMI.
- Interest or finance charges included in the foreclosure calculation.
- Any foreclosure, processing, tax or other applicable charge.
- The final payment amount and the date through which it is valid.
- Where and how to pay after card access is disabled.
- Whether the issuer permits the EMI to be paid separately or transferred to another arrangement.
Request the quote in writing and compare it with your latest statement. A statement balance may not include a closure-day foreclosure amount or charges that accrue until the payoff is posted.

EMI purchases may not earn points
Federal Bank’s EMI terms say the facility generally earns no reward points unless the bank states otherwise in writing. This illustrates why points from ordinary eligible purchases should not be confused with rewards excluded by an EMI program. Check the rewards and EMI sections of your own agreement before valuing points that appear to be associated with an instalment transaction.
Issuer rules compared
The following examples show why card-specific terms matter. They are not a universal rulebook for every issuer.
| Issue | Federal Bank OneCard/Fi terms | Indian Bank OneCard terms | SBI Card agreement | RBI baseline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EMI after closure | Linked dues and EMI facilities become immediately due; foreclosure can debit principal, opted-tenure interest and applicable charges. | Not stated in the reviewed terms. | Not stated in the reviewed terms. | No universal EMI foreclosure formula is set by the closure directions. |
| Refund after closure | Former cardholder is notified; electronic refund goes to a bank account supplied to customer care after ownership verification. | Electronic refund can go to the account in the app profile or one supplied to customer care after ownership verification. | Not stated in the reviewed terms. | Any credit balance after closure must be transferred to the cardholder’s bank account. |
| Unused reward points | Fi terms say accrued card privileges, including points, are extinguished on closure. | Unclaimed points are forfeited on closure; points on a refunded transaction are deducted from the overall balance. | Unused points after voluntary closure are forfeited 30 days after the closure date. | No universal reward-point grace period. |
Refunds and reversals after the account is closed
A merchant refund can arrive later
A merchant may process a refund after you have submitted closure or after the account has already been terminated. Issuer systems can receive the credit even though you can no longer use the card. Federal Bank OneCard says it will notify the former cardholder and electronically refund the amount to a bank account shared with customer care after ownership verification. Indian Bank OneCard describes a similar route: payment to the account listed in the app profile or to an account supplied to customer care after ownership is verified.
Keep a verified bank account ready
Update your contact details before closure and be prepared to submit bank-account evidence in the issuer’s required format. The account may need to be in your name, and the issuer may reject or delay a transfer until ownership checks are complete. Do not send banking details through an unverified message or link; use the issuer’s authenticated app, website or published customer-care channel.

There is no single post-closure refund timetable
The RBI requires transfer of a credit balance but does not establish one universal processing time for every merchant refund received after closure. The merchant’s refund cycle, the issuer’s posting process and verification requirements can all affect when money reaches your bank account. Keep the merchant refund reference and ask the issuer to trace it if the credit does not appear.
A refund can reduce your points
Indian Bank OneCard terms state that a refunded, charged-back or reimbursed transaction is credited back to the card account and that the points earned on that transaction are reduced from the overall points balance. The practical effect is that a refund can change both the money owed or credited and the rewards balance. Other issuers may reverse points differently, so read the transaction and rewards clauses in your agreement.
What happens to reward points?
Reward points are a contractual benefit, not an RBI-mandated cash balance. Their treatment on closure varies sharply:

- Indian Bank OneCard: points pending to be claimed are forfeited on closure.
- Federal Bank Fi: accrued card privileges, including points, are extinguished when the account closes.
These examples do not create a general 30-day grace period. If you want vouchers, statement credits, travel redemptions or other available benefits, redeem them and save the redemption confirmation before requesting closure. Also check whether a redemption has a minimum threshold, a processing delay or a separate expiry date.

Step-by-step: close the account without losing money
- Download your records. Save recent statements, active EMI schedules, reward balances, disputed-transaction references and the current card and rewards terms.
- List every open obligation. Include posted purchases, pending transactions, fees, cash advances, balance transfers and each EMI.
- Request a written EMI payoff quote. Ask for principal, interest, foreclosure charges, taxes, the quote’s validity date and payment instructions.
- Pay the exact amount through an authenticated channel. Keep the payment receipt and allow time for posting. A payment that has not posted can leave the issuer treating dues as outstanding.
- Redeem points and benefits. Complete redemptions before closure and retain confirmation numbers. Do not rely on a grace period unless your agreement expressly provides one.
- Check for pending refunds. Contact merchants about expected credits and ask the issuer how a post-closure refund will be routed.
- Confirm your bank details. Provide a verified account in your name through the issuer’s official channel for any credit balance or later refund.
- Submit the closure request. Use an accepted channel and record the date, time and service-request number.
- Obtain written closure confirmation. The issuer should notify you when the account is closed. Save the notice and a zero-balance or final-settlement statement.
- Monitor the tail. Watch the nominated bank account for residual credits, respond to ownership checks and verify that the account is reported as closed in your credit records.
Common problems and how to resolve them
The issuer says closure is pending because of dues
Ask for the exact outstanding amount immediately; the issuer should not make you wait for the next billing cycle. Pay it, send proof and ask when the seven-working-day period will begin. The period excludes the time you took to clear the dues.
An EMI amount is higher than expected
Request an itemized foreclosure statement. Check whether it includes principal, interest for the opted tenure, taxes and applicable charges. Do not estimate the amount from the regular monthly instalment.
A refund was approved but has not reached your bank
Keep the merchant’s refund reference, confirm that the issuer has posted the credit, and complete any ownership verification. Reconfirm the bank account details through an authenticated channel and ask for a trace or written status.
Points disappeared at closure
Compare the forfeiture date with your card agreement. If the agreement promised a redemption window and you acted within it, provide the closure confirmation and redemption records when raising a complaint. If the terms state forfeiture on closure, the issuer may not be required to restore the points.
The card is blocked but not closed
Ask explicitly whether the account relationship remains active. Blocking does not start the closure clock and does not end EMI, refund or rewards obligations.
Questions to ask customer care before you submit
- What is the total amount required to settle every EMI and other due today?
- Does closure trigger immediate foreclosure, and what charges apply?
- Which points will be forfeited, and what is the final redemption deadline?
- How will a merchant refund received after closure be paid?
- Which bank-account documents are required for ownership verification?
- When will I receive written closure confirmation and the final statement?
- How can I escalate a delay beyond seven working days after my balance is zero?
Once you have the answers in writing, closure becomes a controlled settlement rather than an assumption that the card’s obligations vanish with the plastic.
